How exactly do you expect to kill or remove mold without it ? You can’t even clean your hvac systems coils without moisture of some type ,if you use a steam cleaner you can literally clean the whole system minus the electronics . You should do more research and possibly talk to people who do the work before posting , but don’t listen to me i only have a class A contractor license ,epa license , install /repair hvacs , rent and flip houses for a living .
This is very helpful…I appreciate the step by step information as well as the pictures. I will pass this along to my son-in-law as I think this is something he will use soon. As a matter of fact, he will probably use it at my house!!! Great job…congrats on the hub of the day too….
Air Quality Engineering manufactures a wide variety of air cleaners and air filtration systems for industrial and commercial applications. Our product line includes mist collectors, welding fume extraction systems, soldering fume extraction systems, electronic air cleaners (electrostatic precipitators), HEPA air cleaners, cartridge dust collectors and disposable media filtered air cleaning systems. We also provide portable and overhead systems, as well as ducted (in-duct) systems for a multitude of environments, including oil and mist collection in industrial applications, welding fume, tobacco smoke removal in the hospitality industry, and air purification in healthcare fields. In addition, we produce HEPA and electrostatic home air purifiers that have been repeatedly ranked #1 in consumer magazines.
When these aren’t properly maintained and sanitized, they can build up dust, pollen, and even mold. This means when the air conditioner or heater turns on, the spores are released into the air for you to inhale. While some are less harmful, people who have allergies or sensitivity to certain spores will react negatively. Plus, mold is dangerous for anyone to ingest and should be avoided by regular maintenance.
I to had an odd layer of white’ish dust building up especially during seasonal periods when the HVAC ran a a lot. I carefully swept up the fine dust into a small pile and had it analyzed. Turns out it was very fine fiberglass powder dust. It turns out it is the insulation form the attic! (My attic has blown in insulation). Turns out if you (I) had small gaps around my HVAC registers in the ceiling whee the airs blows into the room. What occurred in my case was that the exiting air at that seam creates a vacuum effect at the grate vent cover and draws and then blows fine insulation dust from the attic into the house. Removing each register grate and sealing each tin outlet gap with calking between the dry wall ceiling and tin fixed the issue. A couple were so bad with bowed gaps I had to screw down the bowed tin to the attaching stud better. Checking the very same glass top desk that catches and shows any dust accumulation now shows only very small amounts of normal house dust build up over several weeks. A big, big improvement. You might have a look by simply removing a couple vent covers yourself.

2. Clean inside basement registers. Often duct work will include registers installed throughout the system to distribute air to the basement. If you remove these registers, you’ll gain even further access to the main trunk line.
Nothing. Your technician was very polite and helpful. Incidentally, I called Sears rather than one of the many duct cleaners that advertise because I felt I would have someone I could trust to be in my home.
The duct cleaning was great. I also ordered hookups of my washer and dryer with A1 in Beaverton, OR which was to include bringing new supply lines and a drain hose for the washer. After verifying twice this would be done with A1 on their direct office line, they called the day of the install to say they didn’t do hoses and didn’t have them. So, I don’t have a working laundry in my house until I get the hoses myself. Why did they say they could do it? What a let down.
If the service provider charges by the hour, request an estimate of the number of hours or days the job will take, and find out whether there will be interruptions in the work. Make sure the duct cleaner you choose will provide a written agreement outlining the total cost and scope of the job before work begins.
In reading through all this about duct cleaning, THE ONE preventative measure people need to realize is that a poorly installed HVAC system that is not sealed and air tight to ensure that ALL indoor air passes through a GOOD air filtration system IS THE best means of ensuring your ducts remain clean. Duct cleaning does not now and will NEVER improve an HVAC systems efficiency. Proper maintenance and installation are the key just as improper installation practices allow for dust infiltration into the duct system. I am a state licensed contractor in Texas, and unless people have their hvac system sealed and/or properly installed, duct cleaning is an absolute waste of money. My duct system is 12 years old as is as clean today as the day I installed the system with ductwork. SO before ANYONE jumps on the bandwagon of duct cleaning, get with your hvac professional FIRST.
For my 1968 Buick that sat many, many years before I bought it last year, it had a bad mildew smell int the interior and coming from the AC vents. I removed the 49-year old musty carpet and put a new one in which took out 80% of the smell. The remaining smell was in the seats, headliner and door panels and ventilation system. The “Air Clean” Duct Frreshner worked great eliminating musty smells coming from the vents. Close the windows and spray the duct cleaner from your OUTSIDE intake vent with the AC on High non-recirculate at first with windows and doors open. Use the second can and spray half into the exterior vent again, and then tone of the fan and spray the remaining half of the can into all interior vents, then turn on AC and Fan on High, recirculate and close all windows and door and let run for a good 10-15 minute.
Our air duct sealing service is designed to locate and seal all of the holes and gaps in your air ducts that have formed over the years. This helps prevent dirt, dust, debris and ambient air from entering your system and decreasing its energy efficiency.
Kristal – I’m sorry but there are so many duct systems it would be hard for me to help without more info. If your ducts are cased in drywall it would be very difficult to access without special equipment.
Helpful information. Thanks. I wanted to add, I cut a good length from an old garden hose, inserted inside my vacuum hose and duct taped it. It extended the reach further in a tight space. Pulled out a gruesome amount of dog hair. Thanks again.
Dear Angie: I’m looking to have my air ducts cleaned but I’ve seen prices vary from $99 to $800. I have not been given an explanation, that I believe, that describes the reason for the price difference. What are your thoughts on the reasons for the wide range of costs? — D.C., Landisville, Pennsylvania.
Knowledge about the potential benefits and possible problems of air duct cleaning is limited. Since conditions in every home are different, it is impossible to generalize about whether or not air duct cleaning in your home would be beneficial.
Maintain and protect your beautiful hardwood floors. Sears has hardwood floor cleaning equipment that will extract the dirt left behind or pushed into floor crevices from other do-it-yourself wood floor cleaning methods.
Once on the scene, trained Sears professionals utilize powerful, truck-mounted equipment to clear your air ducts of dust, debris, pet dander, allergens, and grime. This powerful suction equipment essentially vacuums out years of accumulated dust from the air ducts, leaving them clean and clear. Once finished, our technicians remove all equipment and make sure that your ducts and HVAC unit are restored to their former condition.
If you notice that your clothes are taking more than one cycle to dry, or if your dryer is becoming excessively hot to the touch, then you most likely have a build up of lint and debris in your ducting. AADS can remove dangerous lint from your dryer’s exhaust, repair damaged ducting or replace inferior dryer ducting with metal piping.

At $39 will admit (after asking them several times) that they typically use an electric-powered shop vacuum to clean your ducts. You might wonder how a shop vacuum can remove possibly several pounds of grime?
This dust problem is not addressed in simply cleaning a duct system. You are treating a symptom and not solving anything in most cases. Duct sealing doesn’t always correct issues to a worn out duct system. Nothing is cleaner, better sealed, properly insulated than a new duct system.
Has the service provider adequately demonstrated that duct work and plenums are clean? (Plenum is a space in which supply or return air is mixed or moves; can be duct, joist space, attic and crawl spaces, or wall cavity.)

If the one noticeable spot is where the wall [or ceiling or floor] is white…….first…..take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend each louver of the register to a straight outward position [as they all come brand new with a slant to each side]….so the register is shooting all supply air straight outward. If its a round register [in ceiling]…..no help there. You also should always burn soy or beeswax candles.
Indoor air quality didn’t become an issue until we decided we needed airtight, energy-efficient homes. We’ve lowered our energy bills, but we’ve trapped pollutants inside our homes and offices. What’s in your air ducts? Dust, pollen, animal dander, mouse droppings, dust mites, drywall dust, insulation, fungus and bacteria. Each time the fan turns on, it forces them into your living environment for you to breathe… morning, noon and night. And, if your vent covers are located on the floor, you would be surprised what finds its way into your duct system.
I am a service technician [since ’92]…..and as to double filtering…..I have never recommended it. Granted…..it would be noticeably helpful if the fiberglass filters are the main ones used [which I also never recommend…..as long as system can deliver appropriate air flow with a pleated cotton filter…and any decent service tech can check the air flow for proper cfm]. Any particles small enough to pass through a pleated cotton filter are going to pass through a second filter as well….unless the second filters are so tight that the system is starving for air flow. Has anybody ever accidentally put two filters in their automatic drip coffee maker? What if cars used two fuel filters or air filters? I have told some homeowners to try using second filters at each register [the black thin filter material cut-to-fit….same type used in many window air conditioners]…..but I only suggest this when I know they will still get at least 400 cfm per ton of air flow [350 absolute minimum]……as some homeowners know others who say it has helped and it gives them a peace of mind knowing they are doing something to help contribute to a solution, so it HAS to help [even though I think it falls in the “one-born-every-minute” category…..similar to duct cleaning].
Mr. Duct offers dryer vent cleaning estimates. Dryer vents with long runs often have many bends and pressurized air may not be enough to move debris out of the line. Our certified technicians will assess the situation for you with an airflow reading, develop a cleaning strategy to remove your debris, and follow up the service with another air flow reading to ensure the debris has been removed.
The Kiwi air duct cleaning process is intensive. It includes a complete cleaning, an application of antimicrobial treatment, and filter installation. However, not every home needs a full-system cleaning. Some homes simply need individual ducts vacuumed and cleaned out, an application of antimicrobial treatment and an overall brushing-up. We also offer dryer vent cleaning that can mitigate the risk of fire and help your machine perform more efficiently.
In most modern homes with up-to-date heating and air conditioning systems, filters are changed regularly through the year, so you may not even need to hire a professional. However, keep your eyes open for the accumulation of dust, dirt, dander and mold. If you see it despite regularly changing your filters it could be an indication you need a high-pressure cleaning.
The amount of debris or mold present in your system could certainly ratchet up the overall price. The cost of mildew removal is around $0.07-0.08 per square foot, on top of your initial cost, according to Blue Book. Removing these elements involves added time, special equipment and even special chemicals. In fact, you may be referred to a specialist if mildew and mold is too severe.

If someone in your family suffers from asthma or allergies, then again it is important to use a high-quality air filter and replace your ducting with a new, clean system.  My wife suffers from asthma, so I want to emphasize that I am honestly not trying to push unnecessary work on you.  Besides, what are the chances that you are even in our service area of Santa Clarita or Southern California?  If someone in your family suffers from Asthma or severe allergies, I’d replace your air conditioner and your ductwork, use a high quality air filter, and follow the additional advice in this article: How to Reduce Asthma Symptoms and How Your Air Conditioner Can Help.
Most organizations concerned with duct cleaning, including EPA, NADCA, NAIMA and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) do not currently recommend the routine use of sealants to encapsulate contaminants in any type of duct. Instances when the use of sealants to encapsulate the duct surfaces may be appropriate include the repair of damaged fiber glass insulation or when combating fire damage within ducts. Sealants should never be used on wet duct liner, to cover actively growing mold, or to cover debris in the ducts, and should only be applied after cleaning according to NADCA or other appropriate guidelines or standards.
The cost of an air duct cleaning can vary, but it ranges anywhere from around $300 to over $1000 for a full cleaning of your ductwork.  Be wary of anyone who claims that they will do it for the “bargain price of $75!”  If you are going to get your air ducts cleaned, do it right. claiming that they will do it for less than $300 is either going to do a poor job, or has hidden fees.  Remember the old adage: if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.  Be careful.
Soiling of Walls and Other Surfaces: Ion generators generally are not designed to remove the charged particles that they generate from the air. These charged particles may deposit on room surfaces, soiling walls and other surfaces.
I was amazed at the amount of debris, dust, pet hair etc. that came out of both systems, so in my opinion very much worth it. I wouldn’t say do it again on a annual basis at all…but maybe in 5 years or so.
If you price air duct cleaning from several companies, you will notice a big price difference from one company to the next. For a typical 2,000-SF home, the price might range from $60 to $600. After learning more, you will find that PRICE has a direct correlation to the DEGREE of cleaning you get.
I guess I should present my credentials first, I am a 30 year veteran of the heating and cooling industry. I started at the bottom and have participated in every area of the trade. Installer, service, maint. Ownership, rep, territory manager and so on. A forced air duct system is a large vacume. Like your vacume it has an air intake (return air) and an exhaust (supply registers). A filter just like a vacume (located next to furnace or air handler). Now I want you to visualize something. Put your head inside your vacume cleaner and breath. Get the picture? This is what your duct work looks like. Do you clean your vacume when it’s dirty? If it’s full and the filter is dirty you lose performance and it starts poluting the air you breathe. It’s common sense. I recommend hiring a duct cleaning outfit that you have researched to be honest, background checked, drug tested, insured, and highly recommended by your piers in the area. The service is a necessity, but like everything, it should be done by a qualified company.
Make sure you do your research on the NADCA.org website, the Better Business Bureau and the attorney general. At Alpine we have an A+ rating with the BBB and zero consumer complaints. We are licensed and certified through NADCA. There are a lot of shady air duct cleaning companies out there with too low to be true pricing. They are in trouble with the BBB, are NOT certified with NADCA and use bait and switch tactics. Go with a company that has long standing credibility.

“air duct cleaning system _air duct cleaning effectiveness”

Once the 10″ hose is connected to the system the huge vacuum fan on the truck begins pulling air from the living spaces down through the duct work. By covering the registers a negative pressure is created within the system so dirt and dust can’t return back into the living spaces.
Excessive Dust: Excess dust and debris built up in the ductwork could cause your home to become dustier. Ask your contractor to use a camera to check inside the ductwork for this problem and show you the evidence before they begin to clean.
The most important maintenance steps are fairly simple, but if this is the first time you’ve cleaned the unit, allow about a half day to carefully work through the steps. If you’re not up to the task, call a pro (look under “Air Conditioning Contractors” in your Yellow Pages). Cleaning and servicing a central air conditioner costs $100 to $250.
Vacuum the condenser fins with a soft-bristle brush attachment. The metal fins are delicate; avoid bending them. Clear away weeds, grass and other debris that block airflow through the coil. You often have to unscrew a protective metal case and lift it off to get at the condenser fins.
We had our ducts cleaned this past Saturday. jose and ben at the office were very informative and answered all our questions. The cleaners were very professional and explained the process very well to us. We would highly recommend them to anyone. The airflow seams better also.

All of the products discussed above are registered solely for the purpose of sanitizing the smooth surfaces of unlined (bare) sheet metal ducts. No products are currently registered as biocides for use on fiber glass duct board or fiber glass lined ducts, so it is important to determine if sections of your system contain these materials before permitting the application of any biocide.
There’s usually a switch mounted on, or close to it. (On heat pumps, the switch might be a circuit breaker.) Or shut off the power to the furnace at the main electrical panel. Then replace the furnace filter if it’s dirty (Photo 6) and vacuum up any dust in the blower cabinet (Photo 7).
The technicians were not able to clean our air duct system due to lack of access and size contraints. However,Chris, the technician was very helpful in informing us and making recommendations. The technicians did clean our heating unit. They were thorough, professional and friendly.
I purchased a Groupon for cleaning of unlimited air ducts and one return vent for $39. I should have checked into their hours first because they only offer services during normal business hours. So, with no evenings or weekends available you have to take time off work. I asked Groupon for a refund when I realized this and they refused because it wasn’t within the three day window. Then they didn’t even show up or call for the appointment. I called them after they were an hour late and they were going to call the local dispatch office and have them call me back within 15 minutes. I did not receive that call. I called again and was told I would get a call back from a manager. That didn’t happen either. So I asked Groupon for a refund again and they gave me Groupon bucks. When the survey came asking if I was satisfied with the Groupon customer service I said no, I want real money. I got my real refund the next day. Seems to me Groupon should stop dealing with these companies.
Ultimately, the decision to clean air ducts comes down to a homeowner’s own judgment. “Look at your filter and see if it’s dirty,” Vinick says. “Take a look inside the return grills and supply ductwork and you’ll be able to tell if you have debris buildup.”
Pulling large volumes of air toward the truck, we now feed our soft rubber, high pressure air scrubbing tools down each of the vent lines forcing all of the contaminants into the trunk line where its extracted into the truck.  This removes dirt, dust, pollen, chemical residue and pet dander that has collected over the years.

Very useful. You’re right about the cost. we paid close to a thousand for a professional cleaning last time. I forwarded your hub to my husband who is responsible for those type of work. Hopefully, this will save us some money. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
HVAC duct cleaning is as much a scam as fuel injector cleaning in automobiles. There is no discernible improvement in quality from either except it makes money for the people who sell you the service. Just use quality filters and change often, and use quality gas (Shell, Chevron) you will do just fine.
Knowledge about air duct cleaning is in its early stages, so a blanket recommendation cannot be offered as to whether you should have your air ducts in your home cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urges you to read this document in it entirety as it provides important information on the subject.
Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparison due to the fact that there is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. However there will be some albeit a lot less in any event.
I have lived in Calgary for quite some time now. When I first moved here I couldn’t stand the humidity levels. Its like a desert come winter. When I first moved into my new home, the house inspector insisted I have my furnace and ducts cleaned. I was very sceptical about duct cleaning to begin with. The company I hired came on time and were very respectable from the start. Before mentioning anything they asked me what my concerns were and what issues I was having. They were more concerned about addressing my issues then bringing anything non related up. I ended up going with this company and getting a humidifier installed a couple days later after the cleaning. Its been almost 4 years now that I have been here. The humidifier is working great and the difference is incredible. They took me around explained step by step what they were doing and the reasons they were doing it. With all those other companies out there, I am glad I found them at this site.
Unfortunately, I’m in the same boat and all you can really do is keep cleaning. A duct cleaning can’t hurt and I also run the fan on my furnace around 340 days a year which keeps air moving through my filter thus catching more of the dust and hair (and of course meaning I change my filter a bit more often than most) but that is about all you can do. A duct cleaning won’t really do much for the ongoing shedding and dust our kids create.
Ask the service provider to show you any mold or other biological contamination they say exists. Get laboratory confirmation of mold growth or decide to rely on your own judgment and common sense in evaluating apparent mold growth.
Most homeowners don’t know that they need routine air duct cleanings. When was the last time you had maintenance done on the air ducts in your Dallas home? If you can’t remember, chances are good that they’re filled with dust, lint, mildew or even mold. Kiwi has been in business for 30 years, and air ducts are one of our specialties.
. Here at AirsoPure we charge 350.00  per furnace and 250 if you have a secondary unit. Please give us a call today if you are still in need of this service 888 723 8287. I hope this helped and please contact us in the future. Happy Holidays
If you don’t agree with duct cleaning, fine. If there are some things that HVAC people can do to make the system need cleaning less often fine, but to suggest that I need to GO TO JAIL????? If you need to knock others to make yourself look better……. If duct cleaning is such a scam, why are their governing bodies like NADCA (which I do NOT belong to),several manufacturers of equipment, and national restoration franchises (I’m not a franchise either) who provide this service? I guess the whole world is stupid and only HVAC people are smart. I suppose I am scamming them when I clean puff backs, water damage, fire damage, and clean their carpets too? Or did I wake up one morning and say “ya know, it is great to be a hard working, honest owner operator, but I would love to provide a service that unlike everything else I do is a con and rips off the 90% referral business I busted my butt to earn”

“will air duct cleaning help allergies -air duct cleaning methods best”

Ok what you said is true but in most cases ducts are in a duct flex format, and knowing that the dust in people’s flex duct is just surface dust, any real debris that are in the duct itself will result in very little to no air flow which will keep your unit from performing properly, but if it is true allergy reasons then replacing your duct system is better for overall better air quality, plus if you do pay attention to the warranty on flexible duct is that it only has a 10 year warranty and typically only lasts for 20 years so do your research before having a duct cleaning, and to add one more thing if your duct work is completely metal and you can’t see visible insulation then your duct on the inside has insulation inside of it, if you replace that with duct work that is clean metal on the inside and wrapped with insulation on the outside then it will further reduce the air bourne fiberglass and dust.
Air filters in general do a good job of clearing the air. But do they actually make you feel better? The medical verdict is still out. According to Andrew Filderman, M.D., a pulmonary specialist in Rockport, Maine, no controlled studies have been done on the subject. “We know these things filter the stuff, but we don’t know if it helps,” he says. “It’s difficult to prove because there are so many provocative things in the air, and you don’t always know what’s causing the problem.” Dr. Filderman adds that while some allergic or asthmatic patients report benefits from air filters, the evidence remains anecdotal. “If source control and ventilation don’t help,” he says, “it’s not unreasonable to try a filter.”
If they have a website or not means absolutely zero. Check the BBB or search for company reviews on the internet. The internet is great for word of mouth and can save you a lot of time. Just make sure that the sources of information are credible ones and not competitors because the internet also contempt.
A year and a half ago (fall of 2015) we replaced the furnace and air conditioner. From what we could determine this was the third forced air furnace and second air conditioner unit for the house. As part of the installation, we changed out the two 6″ ducts feeding the second floor with 8″ ducts. The idea was to get more cold air to the second floor in the summer. It worked and for the first time the second floor and first floor temperatures were the same when the air conditioner was running. Of course, to make the system work I close down upstairs duct damper doors in the winter and open them up in the summer.
I forgot about a pot of sweet water I had on the stove to boil. When I finally smelled it the kitchen and dining room I=was smoke filled. I mean thick smoke. I opened doors and windows for a few hours to remove the smoke but the smell is still here and terrible. I had to use the AC and that smell started coming out of the vents. Now what do I do? I have COPD emphysema so I have to be very careful about what I inhale. I already have inhaled too much smoke from all of this which has hurt my lungs even more. I can’t afford for them to get worse over this. How can I get the right person to come out and clean the ducts and furnace or is that the only way to remove that burnt smokey smell. The pot never caught on fire but it sure did produce a lot of smoke. I already have replaced the filter on the furnace. It needed it even though it had just been replaced just last week. I need help or really my lungs need help. Who do I call here in Indpls IN.
I am reading theses emails from home owners and HVAC Duct Cleaning Companies. My Advice is Simple. In NC where I live and work, the air duct cleaning Industry is unregulated. There are less then honest companies selling their services every day – even on Angie’s List! I know – I own and operate a HVAC restoration company and see the scams every day!

If your house has no central air-conditioning or heating, portable room air filters are the most practical choice. (Freestanding whole-house units exist, but they typically require attic installation and ducting to individual rooms.) Most portables employ highly effective HEPA filters, which are not generally used in whole-house systems because they need more-powerful fans than furnaces can provide . Some portable units, called ion air cleaners, use electrostatic precipitator technology. Ion units, which don’t require fans, are typically quieter than HEPA models and cost less to operate because there are no filters to replace. But these units may produce trace amounts of the lung irritant ozone as a by-product of the ionization process
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years. Ed Mack, owner of Air Duct Professionals in Lake Elsinore, says homeowners should consider doing it every two to five years, depending on their circumstances.

You may be familiar with air ducts that are constructed of sheet metal. However, many modern residential air duct systems are constructed of fiber glass duct board or sheet metal ducts that are lined on the inside with fiber glass duct liner. Since the early 1970’s, a significant increase in the use of flexible duct, which generally is internally lined with plastic or some other type of material, has occurred.
Our intensive air duct cleaning treatments lift dirt and debris from the nooks and crannies of your system. We’ll clean all of the air handling components in your system and then wash all of your vent covers by hand. We’ll vacuum out all of the undesirables nesting in your air duct system, and then we’ll apply our people-friendly, pet-friendly antimicrobial solution. Our experts will clean all of the vent areas, as well as your filter, and we’ll replace everything when we’re done.
Turn the power back on and adjust the thermostat so the outdoor unit comes on. Listen for odd noises that might indicate damage or wear. After 10 minutes, pull back the insulation on the insulated pipe (or pipes, if you have a heat pump). It should feel cool, about 60 degrees. The other pipe should feel warm, about skin temperature. If either doesn’t feel right, call in a pro to check the refrigerant level.
Yes, ducts can look terribly dusty. However, that dust will not become aerosolized during the normal operation of your furnace. There is an easy way to test this. Rent a particle counter and test the air flowing out of your registers before and after cleaning. You will not see any improvement in the air quality or any reduction in the airborne dust level. Think of it this way. Duct cleaning companies tell you that you need to clean your ducts when you can see a layer of dust in your ducts. Yet that very layer of dust is proof that duct cleaning is unnecessary, because that dust proves that the air movement in your furnace is not fast enough to re-aerosolize the dust.
Helpful information. Thanks. I wanted to add, I cut a good length from an old garden hose, inserted inside my vacuum hose and duct taped it. It extended the reach further in a tight space. Pulled out a gruesome amount of dog hair. Thanks again.
I turned on the AC when he was finished and immediately saw black fuzz balls the size of marbles come out of several of the registers. He said that was expected since everything was shaken up. So much for describing the service as cleaning. I paid him and sent him on his way. I cannot imagine that this type of service is worthwhile in anything but a new house. Apparently in old houses such as mine I can expect that using a whole house humidifier in the winter followed by a great AC can loosen the soot. Maybe this is to be expected for the first few weeks of summer each year. I now have lined the inside of the registers with cheesecloth to catch the fuzz. I’ll see if it stops after a couple of weeks.

Let’s face it: all air duct would be most efficiently cleaned by simply crawling inside the ducts and hand hand vacuuming with a brush. But since that is not practical in most applications, the Rotobrush cleaning process was developed. It is the onlyself-contained method that brushes and vacuums the debris at the same time, similar to contact cleaning by hand. Dirt is brushed loose inside the air duct and inmediately swept up by the powerful dual vacuums. This system eliminates the need for a central collection unit, dirt and debris do not have to travel throught the entire HVAC system to be collected.
Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparison due to the fact that there is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. However there will be some albeit a lot less in any event.
Sears Air Duct Cleaning follows the duct-cleaning guidelines established by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) guidelines. The technician covers the floor and install corner gardens to prevent damage to your home, attaches a powerful vacuum to the main duct, and then uses specialized tools to knock the dust loose so the vacuum can collect it. Before leaving, the air-duct cleaning technician answers any questions you might have and makes sure you’re satisfied with the work.
It’s a simple matter to notice when your carpet needs cleaned, but dirt and grime in a duct system is hidden from view. Even with regular filter replacement, ducts still require professional cleaning. This requires specially-designed equipment, which is why many HVAC contractors use our services.
Its portfolio takes a hit also. The build-up of debris and grime that keep air from flowing through the ventilation system. That means working harder and higher priced to keep. Over time, the issue is getting worse. Clean clean the atmosphere outlet NADCA accredited Dallas air duct and air in your house with cleaning air ducts.
I was with you until you said avoid steaming cleaning or moisture, there is no way you can remove mold or any other type of biological without moisture. The best way to do this is in fact with a steamer using a commercial disinfectant and a non reactive odor remover so your home smells refreshed and not like a hospital . This is directly contradictory to your article.
Often dryer ducts get overlooked when it comes to keeping vents in your home or commercial property clean. A dryer duct is the leading duct that catches fire. Dryer vents account for nearly 15,000 house fires every year. Self cleaning can only get what’s shown on the surface, not what’s buried in the dryer vent. For professional dryer vent cleaning services, contact DuctMedic today. Don’t fall under another statistic, get your dryer duct cleaned.

“A good cleaner is going to use a negative air machine and a rotary brush cabling system,” Mack says. “The brush goes through the ducts and knocks the debris loose, and the negative air machine vacuums it away.”

My intention was to use the $59.99 coupon for unlimited vents and 1 return. I have allergies so I wanted to make sure I cleaned out everything that is needed. The technician says that the coupon doesn’t include the furnace and the main trunks which turned out to be an extra $270 (and that I needed to have this done). On top of that I was charged $130 for a blower housing cleaning of which they used the shopvac to blow air in the ducts push the debris and dust. On top of that I was charged $200 for Sanitizer and Mildicide. I only saw the technician use a white spray bottle to spray the vents and return (so I don’t know if the contents in the bottle contain both chemicals). He also used a drill attached with a cord. At the end of the cord it was a brush to I guess loosen the dirt in the ducts. After this, a vac was used to suck the dirt. He asked for my phone so he can take before and after pictures of only the return vent. His partner cleaned the furnace of which didn’t let me see how it looked after. I was charged an additional $40 for the Lifetime Electrostatic Filter (he said it was originally $120, whatever). Lastly he wanted to install a UV light to take out the mold for $600, but I declined. When they left there was dust on my TV stand the upstairs hallway (under the return vent), and mostly in the furnace. I had to replace my filter immediately since they use the shop vac to blow in the air duct technique. I plan on requesting a refund.
Cleaning ducts and vents generally costs between $263 and $472, but as with many services, the bigger and dirtier the project, the more you’ll need to pay. When a professional comes to assess the needs of your system, they will consider:
Illness: If someone in your family is suffering from an unexplained allergy-related illness, and you’ve taken every other possible step to decontaminate your home, you may want to consider having your ducts cleaned to see if the HVAC system was the culprit.
if your issue is mold, again correct maintanance of your filter will solve 95% of your problems. Those sensitive to allergies would be wiser finding out what is causing there allergies and addressing that problem than wasting hundreds on an air duct cleaning job.
Our services will help remove allergens, odors, mold and mildew from your Dallas-area home. When your air ducts are cleaned, you’ll even enjoy lower energy bills and save money on future repairs. It makes sense to get your air ducts cleaned periodically, but only if you hire Dallas’ best.
Do not hire duct cleaners who make sweeping claims about the health benefits of duct cleaning — such claims are unsubstantiated. Do not hire duct cleaners who recommend duct cleaning as a routine part of your heating and cooling system maintenance. You should also be wary of duct cleaners who claim to be certified by EPA. Note: EPA neither establishes duct cleaning standards nor certifies, endorses, or approves duct cleaning companies.
Your cleaning service should involve all aspects of your duct work to maximize energy efficiency and air quality. This includes attending to the heat exchanger, blower, drain pan, plenum and coils as well. In the process, your service provider may find that you’re facing larger issues than debris and build-up. The professional may recommend having your furnace repaired if they notice, for example, damage to your heat exchanger or blower motor. Generally, a furnace repair costs between and $500. They may also find that an A/C coil needs to be replaced rather than cleaned and would then recommend A/C repair.
As a homeowner and an owner of rental property I can tell you that the air ducts sometimes need to be cleaned. If you have had pets or anyone smoking in your home (even a visitor) for any length of time, having the ducts cleaned is really good idea. I had a tenant who did not smoke, but got married to a smoker more than year after moving in. When I realized someone was smoking I had them move out, but the smell was awful. I had the ducts cleaned and sanitized (it was a bit extra). The ducts were shiny like new afterwards. I left the windows open for a few days and we cleaned the place super clean and then replaced the carpets. The duct cleaning was worth every penny because the house looked, smelled, and felt new afterward. I plan to have my own house ducts cleaned again this year as we have two cats. We had them cleaned about 12 years ago and they found building materials in the ducts! If you move into a house that has never had them cleaned, it is good to do it. If you have allergies, clean the ducts to see if it helps. You never know what is in your ducts if you have never had them cleaned.

I can’t believe I got ripped off by this Air Duct Cleaners. I called them for this $63 coupon per furnace unlimited vents then when they came after he checked it all I hear is I have molds and leak all is worth $499, $799, $899 per furnace but I told him to just clean the duct and patch the single leak per furnace worth $38 each. Still eanding $899 total. All the work he done is in less than an hour he didnt even go to each vent to clean it. All he did is to path the air leak on that entry pipe to the furnace and open the main venting system, vacuum it, and wash the floor of the vent with a solution. Overall time is about 20 mins talking with me discussing all the option which thinking they made me think I don’t really have an option and 40 mins wash and vacuum he took pictures of before and after of only one furnace. He gave me a receipt without the details on what he has done in the house just the name and price. I think we may need a strict law to punish and control all this companies who do this so other company who do good will despise them.
On the other hand, if a service provider fails to follow proper duct cleaning procedures, duct cleaning can cause indoor air problems. For example, an inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust, dirt and other contaminants than if you had left the ducts alone. A careless or inadequately trained service provider can damage your ducts or heating and cooling system, possibly increasing your heating and air conditioning costs or forcing you to undertake difficult and costly repairs or replacements.
Very useful. You’re right about the cost. we paid close to a thousand for a professional cleaning last time. I forwarded your hub to my husband who is responsible for those type of work. Hopefully, this will save us some money. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Our mission goes far beyond selling our service. We want to answer your questions and give you the tools necessary to make an intelligent decision about having the air ducts cleaned in your home or business.
I am NADCA Certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist. Over the year I have learned on simple answer to this questions: there air duct cleaners and there are pretenders. There will be no benefit at all if you use on the very cheap pretender because they will not really clean anything. On the other hand if you call a qualified air duct cleaner with a NADCA Certification you will, like 99% of my customers, report improvement with your respiratory problems, you will see less dust and the job will pay for itself with energy savings and repair prevention.

“air duct cleaning near me _air duct cleaning and allergies”

The team (yes, two people) took most of the day and thoroughly cleaned everything including the blower wheel, AC coils, condenser outside, registers, boots, trunklines, and plenums. The said they follow the national air duct cleaners assn which requires a huge HEPA-filtered collector while cleaning, rotating brushes in the duct work, air sweeping tools, etc… I thought they were very professional and very thorough! And all at a great price.

Our air duct cleaning service involves removing all the dust, dirt, debris, pet dander and mold spores from your air ducts, which improves the quality of your indoor air and extends the useful life of your air filters and HVAC system.
Compared to using a duster or changing out air filters, professional duct cleaning means going through all the many elements of the HVAC system. This includes, but is not limited to, the supply and return air ducts, grilles, diffusers, exchangers, heating & cooling coils, drip pans, fans and the air handling unit. Keeping these maintained means avoid problems like pollen, mold or overt dust buildup. This is definitely a problem you want to avoid.
5. Dirt and dust spread quicker in a home with dirty ducts. No matter how diligent you may dust and clean your home, fine particulate contaminates, including dangerous allergens, quickly flow from room to room to cover tables, smart phones, and children’s toys.
4. Dust contains not only fine dirt, but also dead skin, pet dander, microorganisms from cat litter (toxoplasmosis), and other particulates such as pollen, mold spores, fungi, and even rodent feces. Left to contaminate your HVAC system, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria, mites, and other pests.
Sneeze. Cough. Wheeze. That’s what the home of an allergy sufferer sounds like around the clock. In Dallas, where allergens are prevalent nearly all year, it’s usually advisable to have routine air duct cleanings. People who have lung conditions and breathing difficulties, including asthma, can benefit from frequent cleanings because they help to prevent the spread of contaminants.
In response to Dan A. I am sorry to hear he thinks air duct cleaning is an out and out scam. I agree there are scam artists in our industry just like any other industry, wish he would’ve explained a little more about his experience.
We agree with our customers who tell us the allergies do not appear as bad after the ducts have been cleaned. Like all governmental agencies are always look to protect the people, they sometimes bend over the wrong way, and don’t deal with reality of success.
In my opinion, you should never get to the point where a duct cleaning is necessary, and it is completely preventable.  Instead, you should rely on preventative maintenance to ensure the health and welfare of you and your family.  In other words, treat the causes, not the symptoms!  Here are some tips to keep your air conditioning system running cleanly and efficiently:
You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should be occasionally cleaned. Provided that the cleaning is done properly, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental. EPA does not recommend that the air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only as needed. EPA does, however, recommend that if you have a fuel burning furnace, stove or fireplace, they be inspected for proper functioning and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

This is where i found where the major problem was for the dust problem in my home. I took down the sheet metal that was 16″ wide down by taking the screws out that keep it attached and when i took it down i, could not beleive the amountbof dust that was up there, inhad to put on breathing nasks to actually scoop out all the cust with my hads and then i used my shop vac then bleached everything, i would say that i filled up a 5 gallon maybe more not counting all the dust that was attached to the side of the beams that was all wood , because the contractor did not actually build a 16″ wide return all out of metal , butvinstead used the sheet metal plate as a short cut to make a suare box using my beams in my basement to make a suare box. I was told contractors do that often and i feel that should be outlawed because it caused my sinus and allery problems, nwhich almost caused me to die. so everyone should make sure their ductwork was made properly. Yes seal it . Cover all openings. So it was not the contractors fault that my vents still had dust, in them, he was afraid tomgetvon top of my pool table to try to get iside the short cut ductwork with the 16″ wide sheet metal. To everyone, make sure you clean your vent system. And make sure you could see it visually like i did , neither i or the contractor had no clue the problem was right above my pool table because of the make shift ductwork. The contactor shoul have made a squrae duct like the rest instead of using my beams as a short cut. That could be whyba lot of people start to have major allergy problems and maybe even ashma.so coverall holes to prevent dust to be taken in and all bugs etc. then make sure you clean your ductwork as you see reasonable, they say 5 years , but i say evry 2 to 3 years, but you can do it yoursely.. You need a good air hose and suction vacum like a shop vac, do a little research. I invented something a while back like 18 to 20 years ago , and now it is on the market to help homeowners such as ourselves with this dust problem. I cannont say anymore because i have to make sure that it was not my research and idea that solved my problem and for all the others that are using what i invented ..there was nothing on the patent search that i hired an invention company to do, back then. Once yor vents are cleaned properly younwill be very happybif you are an allery sufferer. Stop the children for throwing things into the ductwork and sweeping things into the ductwork, keeping your vent system is clean once youbclean it right the first time, just maintain it , you dhould keepmthe hvac system clean such as coils etc it truly helps, people vome into my condo and they cannont beleive how cold it igets and how my system works so well. it is because i have my whole duct system sealed outsid with the duct sealant and my coils i vleaned my self and take the time that the furnase fan is cleaned because that could have a lot of major dust attached to it, mine had a lot of caked on dust it was like hard dirt. Yxounwill save on allergy bills nasal sprays, i wish I could say more because incould say something to really keep your whole duct system clean for years once you do a first good cleaning of intake and return vents. until i email one of the major companies to see where they got my idea from. Intrulybhope it was not from the invention company i hired years ago who did the patent search for my idea. I becam
In addition, the service provider may propose applying chemical biocides, designed to kill microbiological contaminants, to the inside of the duct work and to other system components. Some service providers may also suggest applying chemical treatments (sealants or other encapsulants) to encapsulate or cover the inside surfaces of the air ducts and equipment housings because they believe it will control mold growth or prevent the release of dirt particles or fibers from ducts. These practices have yet to be fully researched and you should be fully informed before deciding to permit the use of biocides or chemical treatments in your air ducts. They should only be applied, if at all, after the system has been properly cleaned of all visible dust or debris.
After trying to find as good deal on air duct cleaning I thought about researching how to do it ourselves and I’m so glad I did! This rehab house has been sitting for 9 yrs and only God knows what’s been lurking and swirling around for the 2+yrs since we installed the furnace. Now with 2 cats everything gets covered in dust especially in the summer with no central air, only high-powered floor fans. I bake cakes and have to turn them all off to keep the dust, lint, cat hair etc from landing in them! Eeek…and when the sun shines through the window the dust becomes even more visible! Dust, dust, dust…I can’t take it any more and will be so happy when we’re done with this DIY project! Update to follow! Thank you so much!!!! Mmmwah
Medium efficiency filters with a MERV of 5 to 13 are reasonably efficient at removing small to large airborne particles. Filters with a MERV between 7 and 13 are likely to be nearly as effective as true HEPA filters at controlling most airborne indoor particles. Medium efficiency air filters are generally less expensive than HEPA filters, and allow quieter HVAC fan operation and higher airflow rates than HEPA filters since they have less airflow resistance.
I am in need of HVAC ADVICE!! I need a new furnace badly, mine is cracked. I have bought both a 95 % AFUE furnace and a 5 Ton evap coil, I figured it should all be replaced at once for both cost and efficency. My question is with all the negaitive things I have heard about companies ripping you off, what type of price should I pay someone for putting in those two items and bringing everything in my attic up to code? I have been quoted $550 – $ 3300. Wide margin here!! Then of course comes the licencing part!! I know in my heart that I should use a licenced contractor but I have had such bad luck and prices from them that honestly one that was licened in Ga. and just not here in TN and is a tech. which charges 1100 – 2200 less sounds good as so long as I pay some type of Profenial HVAC person say $100 to inspect the work after its done and before I pay them.
I did the $49.00 Groupon they just left. Basiclly all they did was stick a shop vac type hose into the vent supply and one return. I also had the dryer done. the person in charge pointed to the main return inside my humidifier and said it needed cleaning
12.       All access openings created are sealed up with custom sheet metal access panels. An air-tight seal is made with either an acrylic-based metal tape or mastic sealant. If your duct has insulation, this insulation is re-sealed correctly, not with duct tape.  There is no air loss or structural integrity lost in the ducts after this method.
Judy the only reason you should be spending  700 is if you have 2 furnaces in your home. Here at AirsoPure we charge 350.00  per furnace and 250 if you have a secondary unit. Please give us a call today if you are still in need of this service 888 723 8287. I hope this helped and please contact us in the future. Happy Holidays
In fact, this is interesting, EVERY MEDICAL DOCTOR that has used it have been the first ones to report these benefits. I love doctors. They are most enthusiastic air duct cleaning customers and they give so many referrals.
Duct cleaning is a SCAM. I had an in duct UV light installed and my house feels and smells clean now all of the time. No more headaches, my two year old doesn’t wheeze anymore, and allergies have gone down dramatically. The concept from what little I know is it kills or traps 99.9% of allergens, mold, bacteria, cooking grease, lint, etc etc etc
as you say it is not required to be done as niether are you required to put wax on a new car paint job as is already sealed. yet almost everyone when washing their cars chooses to add more wax or just wax the car.
The Carpet and Rug Institute awarded Sears the Platinum Seal of Approval, which is the Highest Level of Performance for a Carpet Cleaning System. This deep-cleaning process removes harmful allergens, dust particles, and other debris that settles in the carpet.

How nice all of you HVAC companies are calling my profession a “scam”. I am wondering how many of you would be willing to EAT the stuff we take out of ducts? Just last week we got some dead mice and their nest out….perhaps some Cabernet and white sauce with that?

“is air duct cleaning effective -why is air duct cleaning important”

We’ve pulled out pop bottles, cans, drywall, insulation, toys, tools, paper, food… and tons of dirt, hair and lint! With all that debris plugging up your system, your furnace has to work harder than it should. In fact, 9 out of 10 maintenance calls are a direct result of dirt and dust plugging up the system!
Great Service. This company is the BEST. They really know their stuff and don’t overcharge you. They followed up with us this morning after the service to even make sure we were satisfied post-cleaning. couldn’t ask for a better company in the customer service department.
I have a white gritty dust throughout my whole house. Dust and it comes right back. We have central air. In 2013 had all the air conditioning tubing in the attic replaced. Old ones were completely clean. Why?? Thought dust would be in there. Put everything in plastic containers. Furniture everything is always covered with this. Problem is always there year round. Furnace people said it is not coming from furnace. We built house in 1971. Only started with this @ 19 years ago. Thinking when air conditioning went in. We cough all the time and sneeze. I do not have friends come here because I hate how dirty my house looks.
You should be aware that although a substance may look like mold, a positive determination of whether it is mold or not can be made only by an expert and may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation. For about $50, some microbiology laboratories can tell you whether a sample sent to them on a clear strip of sticky household tape is mold or simply a substance that resembles it.
At $39 will admit (after asking them several times) that they typically use an electric-powered shop vacuum to clean your ducts. You might wonder how a shop vacuum can remove possibly several pounds of grime?
Chemical biocides are regulated by EPA under Federal pesticide law. A product must be registered by EPA for a specific use before it can be legally used for that purpose. The specific use(s) must appear on the pesticide (e.g., biocide) label, along with other important information. It is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide product in any manner inconsistent with the label directions.
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years. Ed Mack, owner of Air Duct Professionals in Lake Elsinore, says homeowners should consider doing it every two to five years, depending on their circumstances.
If your non metal ductwork is that dirty you should just have it replaced AND sealed. Also most duct systems are not very well designed. Look for proper sizing and do not go cheap with one or two intakes (return grills) You need them through-out the house. Here in Austin the duct cleaners are carpet cleaners and chimney swifts. (this is who the duct cleaning equipment mfgs call on when the hvac people do not get on board. They DO clean other types of ductwork and we (the hvac guys) have to fix them. I am not aware of any of non hvac guys cleaning and servicing the actual equipment. Here in Texas it is against the law for them to do so. Treat the entire house as a system, not just the ductwork and /or hvac equipment. Home performance really does work to increase comfort and air quality while reducing operating costs.
I agree about the coupons. While they are often useful, in our case, we (who usually are more intelligent than this) were talked into a more expensive cleaning that ultimately added up to about 900.00. After reading Angie’s articles, we realized what a silly mistake we made. Next time, we will do our research.
The comment that the EPA say’s there is no scientific evidence that regular air duct cleaning does not improve air quality is totally absurd. The EPA is WRONG and whoever wrote that article should be FIRED!
Some residential HVAC systems may not have enough fan or motor capacity to accommodate higher efficiency filters. Therefore, the HVAC manufacturer’s information should be checked prior to upgrading filters to determine whether it is feasible to use more efficient filters. Specially built high performance homes may occasionally be equipped with true HEPA filters installed in a properly designed HVAC system.
Violet Shrop – Thank you and no. You don’t want the power off while cleaning registers…you want the fan running. Now once you get to the furnace itself, at the end and you’re ready to change the filter and wrap up…yes. Turn off the power.
My house gets extremely dusty. I can dust in the morning and by evening it looks like I have not dusted at all by the end of the week if I have not dusted you can write your name in the dust. Would cleaning my air ducts make a difference?
Cleaning the air ducts in your home increases air flow within the system, helping to improve the efficiency of the HVAC system by distributing air throughout the house more quickly and with less effort. Regular cleaning of the air ducts also minimizes dust and debris entering the furnace, thereby helping to prevent clogging of the unit.
Your system can be treated with a sealant. These sealants prevent dirt and dust from getting sent back into the air. Sanitizer chemicals can also be added to prevent the growth of mold and other allergens. This is a possible solution for saving on fewer A/C cleanings in the future.
I am an HVAC contractor. I have seen ducts so filthy that I did not want to breath the household air. Most systems are clean. An inspection cannot hurt. As a disclaimer I also own a duct cleaning machine.
Portable units range in price from $150 to as much as $1,500, and there are ongoing costs. HEPA filters, which must be replaced annually, cost from $40 to more than $100. Portables can also be noisy, because it takes a lot of wind to push air through such a fine filter. Some manufacturers are addressing the noise issue with so-called smart filters that employ an optical sensor to judge when the air is relatively clean, then switch to a lower fan setting. Another strategy is to run a portable filter on high during the day, then turn it to low at night.
After damage to your HVAC system due to fire or flooding, you shouldn’t really be relying on a duct cleaning company to handle this.  Instead, do some research for your area and hire a reputable HVAC contractor.  It should be an experienced air conditioning technician that evaluates your ductwork after fire or flood who can then replace duct segments if necessary.
I’ve been in business in Florida for 25 years and purchased a $12,000 duct cleaning system 4 years ago. In the last four years I’ve cleaned 5 duct systems charging around $400 each. Not a very good return on investment. What I have been doing most the time is I get a call by someone panicked because they called some low priced company to inspect their system and were told they have dangerous black mold. Then they call me to have a look. Most the time they don’t have mold, ducts look very clean. However the coils are dirty and the inside of the air handler cabinet needs cleaning. Keep in mind not every system can handle supper high efficiency filters! These filters can block air flow quite a bit right out of the package. Many older systems can’t handle pleated filters due to increased static pressure. “Back rooms with low air flow”. I have taken many hours of classroom study on indoor air quality. Never got any certification because I don’t want to pay another organization dues yearly. I think the problem with duct / system cleaning is most people are suckers for low priced scams that are rip- offs . People call me all the time and ask how much? When I tell them average $400 they hang up. I know I do the job correctly and honestly, and they are going to get racked over the coals by the scam artists by calling $79 whole house duct cleaning guys. People need to check internet, angies list and BBB reviews. But keep in mind even reviews need to be sifted through your rational person filter.
Cleaning your air conditioning ducts sounds like a good idea, but to be perfectly honest it is mostly marketing and hype, in my not-so-humble opinion.  I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a scam, per se, but I would tell you to be careful with your money when you start asking yourself, “should I have my air ducts cleaned?”  If you follow proper preventative HVAC maintenance practices, then you really shouldn’t have to have your AC ducts cleaned, and if you do decide to do it, then it should only be a one-time thing.  If you do decide to go through with it, thats okay, but I’d recommend you follow the tips above and try not to buy into the hype too much.  For more information on other related air conditioning topics, visit the ASM Air Conditioning Blog.  If you live in Santa Clarita and the Southern California area, give us a call and we’d be happy to help you: Contact All Systems Mechanical.
Air Duct Cleaning companies supposed to come up with the packages and clear explanation what and how they going to do the job. Method described below by Steve Marshall called “Push and Pull” and it is one of the most effective ways to remove dust and debris from the “length of your house”.
Air duct cleaning can improve your home’s air quality by removing dust, dirt, hair, and pet dander. This process removes contaminants that contribute to allergies and can reduce the need to dust. Cleaning the ducts of your home’s heating and cooling system can increase its efficiency by up to 30%. To check the dirt and dust levels in your home’s air ducts, remove a vent and use a camera to peek down your ducts to see if they need cleaning.
Another major reason to routinely clean your air ducts is to maintain your indoor air quality (IAQ). Now, here at Bee’s Air Duct Cleaning we pride ourselves on our honesty. There are no conclusive studies showing that cleaning your air ducts is good for your health, or will help or cure your allergies. Over and over again we see these claims, though out the air duct cleaning industry. That being said, if you are allergic to something in your air ducts, cleaning your air ducts will certainly help. A good way to tell if an air duct cleaning could help your allergies is if you notice symptoms when you furnace or a/c kicks on. If you do, give us a call! If there doesn’t seem to be correlation, an air duct cleaning certainly won’t hurt and as we discussed earlier will be a benefit to your system as a whole.
Both technicians were very curteous and friendly. I especially liked the fact that they let me know that I would need to change the air duct soon due to age. I would definitely recommend this service to friends/family.
I live in a 1950’s ranch house in the South. The prior owners were smokers. Based on recommendations from one of the local conservation organizations, I decided to have a home energy audit done. As part of their findings, they recommended additional insulation in the attic and duct cleaning and sealing. This turned out to be a very problematic process. In terms of the ducts, it was necessary to remove the metal grates. However, these grates had been painted over many times and shoe molding covered the bottom of the grates. The vendor was not able to remove the grates without damaging them in the process. Because these grates dated back to the 1950’s, it was difficult to find appropriate replacements. The ones I finally discovered were correct except they were 1/4″ wider. This meant that the shoe molding had to be carved out. The duct cleaner could not provide any assistance with this problem. It took me a month of long evenings replacing the vent covers myself, carefully chiseling out the shoe molding and repainting. In terms of the extra installation in the attic, the same vendor used blow in insulation. Unfortunately, they did not recognize that the 13 floodlights whose mounting extended into the attic were not designed to be buried under insulation. The problem manifested itself in terms of expensive flood light bulbs failing continually. So, I had to have all of the light housings replaced. Yet another unexpected expense. Despite the expense, pain and suffering, I cannot report any improvement in my heating costs or the “quality” of the air. To be fair, I do not have any allergies and did not undertake this for air quality improvements but rather heating efficiency improvements.
Mr. Duct is a professional heating and cooling & air duct and dryer vent cleaning service provider. Specializing in residential, commercial, and industrial duct cleanings and HVAC cleaning, repair, tune-ups and installations, we are Chicagoland’s air quality choice.
If you want to get some of the dust and debris out of your ventilation system, you can mix household cleaners like bleach with water, dip a cloth in the mix and then the wipe out the system. This will remove a layer of the spores, which could increase the quality of air a bit and help with the flow of air throughout the house until a pro can come out.
I guess, I will start with saying that air duct cleaning is almost never needed. It is not a scam, but it is certainly something that uneducated homeowners get suckered into. In regards to air flow, a well balanced HVAC system should be able to deliver more than enough air flow. If you are not getting good air flow, it’s because your system may be out of balance. Additionally, regular cleaning/changing of the air filters will solve about 95% of your problem. Though you would be surprised how many people either a. don’t have a filter or b. don’t know about it and leave it there for 10+years. a washable one should be cleaned every 6 months(spring and fall) and a disposable one should be replaced every 3-4 months.
Bill – The metal shouldn’t hold the smell and you probably won’t be able to clean it all unless you disconnect it so for the time and effort, I’d replace the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean them.

“reliable air duct cleaning +air duct cleaning reviews”

The most important thing to know about achieving improved indoor air quality through Air Duct and HVAC cleaning is that there are no different levels of cleaning services. Anything less than complete cleaning of all various heating & cooling components of an air systems, Usual components are: the air ducts, registers, diffusers, grills, heat exchangers, coils, fan motor and housing and removal of all contaminants is unacceptable, and could leave you with more issues than you had before the cleaning. If improper equipment or procedures are used, contractors could make dormant contamination airborne and fail to collect all of it. If this happens, the next time your system is re-energized all that contamination could potentially go into the living space.

Ok what you said is true but in most cases ducts are in a duct flex format, and knowing that the dust in people’s flex duct is just surface dust, any real debris that are in the duct itself will result in very little to no air flow which will keep your unit from performing properly, but if is true allergy reasons then replacing your duct system is better for overall better air quality, plus if you do pay attention to the warranty on flexible duct is that it only has a 10 year warranty and typically only lasts for 20 years so do your research before having a duct cleaning, and to add one more thing if your duct work is completely metal and you can’t see visible insulation then your duct on the inside has insulation inside of it, if you replace that with duct work that is clean metal on the inside and wrapped with insulation on the outside then it will further reduce the air bourne fiberglass and dust.
Due to growing concerns about indoor air quality, it’s easy to convince homeowners that their ducts need cleaning. But unless ducts are really dirty, there’s no reason to clean them. The EPA takes a similar stance on the issue, recommending cleaning only if the ducts and HVAC unit are contaminated.
Do you feel bad when you are in the environment, but when you leave the home the symptoms disappear? This bad air coming from your air ducts can cause headaches, watery eyes, sore throat, nausea, skin disorders and fatigue.
Well, I had the cleaning done. The handler is definitely much quieter. It was explained to me that with the coils clean, the condensation will be able to sweat off instead of sticking to the dust and dirt, therefore the humidity (lots of humidity in florida) will be removed better. I feel as if it was worth it, but, I will definitely change that filter every 3 weeks or so from now on. I don’t want to pay that cost again.
You’d be surprised how many HVAC companies don’t even have websites. How accountable can we think they are, when a phone number can be changed at the drop of a hat? I’m not hiring one without a website. Never again.
“Honesty is everything with these people. They checked all the vents connected to my dryers and said I didn’t need any cleaning of the ducts since they were all clean. Two other companies gave me price per vent without looking at the job. The gutter maintence earned my future business through honesty”

Gas-phase air filters remove gases and odors by using a material called a sorbent, such as activated carbon, which adsorbs the pollutants. These filters are typically intended to remove one or more gaseous pollutants from the airstream that passes through them. Because gas-phase filters are specific to one or a limited number of gaseous pollutants, they will not reduce concentrations of pollutants for which they were not designed. Some air cleaning devices with gas-phase filters may remove a portion of the gaseous pollutants and some of the related hazards, at least on a temporary basis. However, none are expected to remove all of the gaseous pollutants present in the air of a typical home.
Inside your HVAC system, fine dust collects on air duct surfaces, vents, motors, and coils. Flakes of dead skin, hair, and pet dander catch onto the dust, and before too long this process creates a dense, mat-like environment where bacteria, mould, dust mites, and allergens can flourish. Air filters remove most of these from the air stream, but not for all parts of the HVAC system. That’s why it’s important to periodically check the condition of your air ducts to see if they could use air duct cleaning services
Over time, the pad upon which the condenser unit sits can begin to tip as the soil settles beneath it. An out-of-level condenser unit can cause the compressor within to fail early. Check the condenser for level and use rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level. Service Experts’ Moody adds this exception: “If you have a heat pump system, it’s okay for the pad to be slightly sloped away from the home’s foundation to allow for defrost run-off during the winter.”
We called this company Arizona Carpet and Duct cleaning because we got a coupon in the mail for a 24.99 carpet cleaning so we decided to have the duct cleaned with out and over the phone estimate. Bad idea. When they got here they took out our air filter and said we had mold and it was going to cost 2000.00 not including the carpets. In the end we ended up talking them down to $500. If you can bargain do it.

Duct & Vent Cleaning of America, Inc. was founded in April of 1989 by Ron Eckman, and was soon joined full time by his cousin Michael Vinick in West Springfield, MA. The company began as a result of Ron recognizing the importance of duct cleaning and that it was an important emerging market. Very soon, Ron turned over control of the company to Michael who has been running the company ever since.
Vinick says he’s encountered much anecdotal evidence of the benefits of air duct cleaning. “You could ask the tens of thousands of customers that I’ve had in 26 years about their improved energy consumption and healthy home environment,” he says.

All of you have dentists, you have doctors, you have preachers, you have mechanics. You don’t have to know everything about everything but you have to have people in your life that you can trust. Due to the dangers of working around electricity and the air-conditioner’s moving parts, it’s essential to completely turn off power to the unit. On the exterior condenser/compressor, look for an exterior shut-off box near the unit. Indoors, also turn the power off at the breaker box.
We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)

“air duct cleaning methods best |why is air duct cleaning important”

I paid $49 for a groupon. When the guy came today, he did an inspection first and said the ductwork first needed to be treated for mold; $348 for a spray that would last 8 months or $680 for an UV light purifier that would last 2 years. Also, the furnace needed to be cleaned for another $260. When I told him to just clean the ductwork, he said I would owe an additional $305 because the groupon was only good for 1 return and I had 2. I sent him packing with no services performed. Thankfully I am only out of $49! I will complain to groupon.
There are different ways to measure how well air cleaning devices work, which depend on the type of device and the basic configuration. Air cleaning devices are configured either in the ductwork of HVAC systems (i.e., in-duct) or as portable air cleaners.
Metal is way better than flex duct or ductboard. It gets better airflow, holds up to critters and duct cleaners. I know of no hvac company here that cleans ductwork. (there probably is one somewhere) The mfg’s of duct cleaning equipment keep trying to sell us hvac people on their benefits and profit potential but most all hvac people know that unless you have metal ductwork you are NOT doing the customer any favors.
Advanced Air Duct Cleaning includes the standard process of using high-pressured air wands to clean all supply and return vents and branch lines, with the addition of the Rotobrush or the Viper Clean Sweep utilized on the main trunk lines. Service includes unlimited vents, up to 2500 square feet (only $20 for each additional 500 sq ft). Visit our Advanced Air Duct Cleaning page to learn more or our Book Now page to schedule online.

Each day the air in your home is re-circulated through your home’s air duct system. Over time dust, dander, and debris builds up in your HVAC/Air Duct System making your furnace and air conditioner less efficient which can cost you more money to operate.
The technician that replaced my blower module said I could definitely benefit from a professional cleaning of the handler and the ductwork, which makes sense. They are going to charge about 500 dollars and bring a crew of people out.
We are a hvac company that provide air duct cleaning service are minimum charge $400 to do a proper air duct cleaning with 2 techs avg 3-6 hours that includes sanitizing. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.
If not properly installed, maintained and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the home’s living space. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them. If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, it is important to make sure the service provider agrees to clean all components of the system and is qualified to do so. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus negating any potential benefits. Methods of duct cleaning vary, although standards have been established by industry associations concerned with air duct cleaning. Typically, a service provider will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-powered vacuum cleaner.
Inspect the system before cleaning to be sure that there are no asbestos-containing materials (e.g., insulation, register boots, etc.) in the heating and cooling system. Asbestos-containing materials require specialized procedures and should not be disturbed or removed except by specially trained and equipped contractors.
The A/C System Cleaning and restoration industry has become a very lucrative bait and switch industry that many Carpet cleaning companies, Maid services, as well as plumbing or handyman service companies are adding on to there services. These add-ons are not fully certified, trained or even have any experience in the HVAC industry. These companies are the reason prices and quality of work are all over the place. If you are looking to make a smart decision for your home a professional Duct Cleaning service will protect you for 5-7 years. This info comes from NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association) which is the closest thing to a license we have for duct cleaning. They have a great site that explains this process and pricing much more in depth and factual than what has been written here. This organization is working very hard to get these bad companies exposed and out of this industry. So in saying that do your research! Green Duct Decontamination is a certified company with certified technicians that take this work very seriously. We can not have these low rated unprofessional companies paste a bad name for an entire industry. Stay away from anything under 250$ for a full duct clean this is not feasible, go look at NADCA.com and you will understand why and what these companies are doing to rob you of your dollar.

Homeowners should be sure to choose a fully insured duct and vent cleaning service. Choosing an uninsured cleaning service leaves homeowners on the hook for the costs associated with any employee injuries or accidental damage that occurs during the cleaning process.
There’s no research at present proving that routine duct cleaning improves the air quality or reduces dust in your home. There is, however, evidence that dirty heating and cooling coils, motors, and air handling units can make your HVAC unit less efficient.

I am 79 years old, bought a condo & spent a lot of money on it. this winter my first bill was 450.00. had my furnace checked out, which is on the roof. it was old rusted out & leeking oil. i talked to owner & had unit installed. they came out to clean ducks & they were split & worn out. there is no crawl space because theres a unit above me. my real estate lady or this company will not help me fix this problem.
Mold: If you see mold or other microbial growth on the ductwork, that’s certainly worth addressing. Keep in mind, those substances that appear to be mold should still be confirmed by laboratory analysis. You should also take steps to change conditions in and around the ductwork to prevent future mold growth, such as replacing wet insulation.

“professional air duct cleaning air duct cleaning how much does it cost”

This is really well written & helpful. Just to make sure: so to clean your return register, you don’t need to shut the power off? I wouldn’t think so either, mine looks like yours, just a space under the hvac cabinet, no electric element seen. Thanks.
3.         Access openings are cut into the main trunk duct work in strategic locations. Don’t worry; this is normal and allows us to properly remove the debris from your system. These access openings are large enough to accommodate our vacuum hoses, which start at 10″ in diameter. This is done as applicable. If ductwork is not accessible, we open up the HVAC system to access the plenums or areas of the main duct work.
We needed the system cleaned fast since we were moving out of the home and knew the new homeowners were going to picky. Mr. Duct got in for the air duct cleaning the next day, worked efficiently and thoroughly, and left us with perfectly clean vents. They were great!

• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
The dust, pollen, dander, sawdust, mold spores and other lightweight particles that float in your home’s air eventually circulate through your heating and cooling system. Your furnace filter traps some of this airborne debris—if you replace your filter when it’s dirty—but some settles in the ductwork. That accumulated dirt is available to move back into the airflow and blow into your rooms. Your furniture and floors get dusty sooner, but worse, your home’s air quality can deteriorate. If you have respiratory problems, you might find it more difficult to breath. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you can be exposed to pollen all year long. Dirty ducts also make your heating and cooling system less efficient. The filter clogs faster, so the system has to work harder to move air—and you can end up with a higher energy bills. Also, particles of dirt wear on the components in your HVAC system, which can shorten its life.
Kristal – I’m sorry but there are so many duct systems it would be hard for me to help without more info. If your ducts are cased in drywall it would be very difficult to access without special equipment.

Vacuum frequently (weekly).  A lot of people think that their HVAC system is the only key to indoor air quality, but your air conditioner is just a part of an overall lifestyle that is required to be healthy.  Take a look at: How to Use a Vacuum Cleaner and Why.
On the other hand, if family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor. EPA has published the following publications for guidance on identifying possible indoor air quality problems and ways to prevent or fix them.
The EPA estimates that the air inside a home can be up to 100 times dirtier than the air outdoors, and most people spend up to 90% of their day inside. Experts suggest that your home’s air ducts should be cleaned every 5 to 10 years, depending on how you live and if you have pets.  You also should have your air ducts cleaned after construction or a renovation project. When you buy a new home, having its air ducts cleaned before you move in helps ensure the home’s ducts are free of contaminants left behind by prior owners.
I had a very satifying experience with the technicians doing my air duct cleaning. I knew every little about the process and it was explained very well and understandable. My house was a mess because I was also getting a carpet cleaning the same day, so furniture was moved around for that, some of it was in the way for the tech’s, they moved it and cleaned up after. My air works better and I sure can tell the difference in air quality.THANK YOU very much… Sear’s Your air duct cleaning Technician’s do a wonderful job! I will surely contact SEARS again for cleaning services…
When a professional cleaner comes into your home to clean ducts and vents, that means they will clean all the different elements in the HVAC system, including the supply and return ducts, grilles, diffusers, exchangers, heating units & cooling systems, drip pans, fans and the air handling unit.
If any of the conditions identified above exists, it usually suggests one or more underlying causes. Prior to any cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing of your ducts, the cause or causes must be corrected or else the problem will likely recur.
1. Remove end caps from rectangular duct work. If you have rectangular duct work, like in the picture below, you can remove the end caps to access the inside of the ducts. You can slide the “drives” down off the duct and pull the cap out of the “slips.” So long as the duct is not butting up against the wall, you should be able to reach your vacuum hose in through the space uncovered by removing the cap, and sweep out any dust you find. You could even use a flashlight to look inside the duct for dirty areas.
High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters were invented during World War II as a way to prevent radioactive particles from escaping laboratories. The filters are made of various synthetic fibers; there is no construction standard because the term merely designates an efficiency rating: the ability to block 99.97 percent of all particles 0.3 micron or larger. (A micron is a millionth of a meter, or .000039 inch; the naked eye can’t see anything smaller than about 25 microns.) That rating is for laboratory conditions, however. Experts say that at home you can realistically expect a HEPA filter to grab about 80 percent of such particles.

lo everyone. I read your Experience. I can say, with good reason since i m an authorized technician of air duck cleaning, that Angie is absolutely right. in order to do a proper cleaning of the ducts serve the means and the proper time. usually for a normal house with a single system the amount payable is between 350 and 550 dollars and the time goes by dirt inside but always not less than 2 hours to clean everything. I regard cupon I can tell you that some are valid and offer the right price for the performance. I also read mold in ducts, before we tell the customer that there is mold perform a test that is analyzed in the laboratory and only after 3 days, with the result of the analysis of paper, inform risk and if the customer is okay proceed with the sanitation of the duct with certified products of the highest quality, just think that the product that we use costs 55 dollars a gallon. but I’m not here to make me adverts, I feel sorry for people who have had bad experiences, I personally love my job and I try to always do it in a proper manner.
3. The longer your HVAC system operates, the more wear and tear it undergoes. Long run times can shorten the overall life time of HVAC systems, from AC compressors to hydro pumps, burners, and motor bearings. You’ll wear out your home’s HVAC system sooner.
Benefect is an all-natural, non-toxic, chemical-free, organic sanitizer that can be fogged into your air duct system to help prevent bacterial build up from various toxins that come in contact with you and your family on a daily basis.
Mack says a proper air duct cleaning will help with the biggest causes of respiratory problems. “If you have asthma, your number one enemy is dust mites,” he says. “And for people with allergies, pollen and dander are a big problem. These are microscopic elements you can’t see with the naked eye, and they’re commonly found in air ducts. A good cleaning will remove a lot of them.”
Ozone generators use UV light or an electrical discharge to intentionally produce ozone. Ozone is a lung irritant that can cause adverse health effects. At concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone has little effect in removing most indoor air contaminants. Thus, ozone generators are not always safe and effective in controlling indoor air pollutants. Consumers should instead use methods proven to be both safe and effective to reduce pollutant concentrations, which include eliminating or controlling pollutant sources and increasing outdoor air ventilation.
3-Put them all in the bathtub in warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap to the water and let the bubbles build up. The dish soap will help cut in grease and grime that has built up on the vents. Let the vents soak for about 10 minutes.

I’ve been in business in Florida for 25 years and purchased a $12,000 duct cleaning system 4 years ago. In the last four years I’ve cleaned 5 duct systems charging around $400 each. Not a very good return on investment. What I have been doing most the time is I get call by someone panicked because they called some low priced company to inspect their system and were told they have dangerous black mold.
Despite Bergendahl’s experience, Vinick says NADCA’s certification standards have improved the situation. “A lot of [service companies] weren’t going about it the correct way,” he says. “We have an anti-fraud task force, and we’ve gone after some fraudulent duct cleaners with the help of state attorneys general.” He suggests that in addition to NADCA membership, homeowners make sure their cleaners are an established business, have appropriate insurance and are registered to do business in their state and locality.
