“air duct cleaning reviews _what does air duct cleaning do”

There’s no research at present proving that routine duct cleaning improves the air quality or reduces dust in your home. There is, however, evidence that dirty heating and cooling coils, motors, and air handling units can make your HVAC unit less efficient.
I own a small mechanical company. My main work is service and system replacements. I have never been a believer in duct cleaning. The company I worked for before had our duct man come out and do my house. I saw no difference. Preventive maintance is what I recomend. Remove fan and clean, seal fan compartment to prevent dust from being pulled in, filters I install media filters, they are 5″ thick and pleated. I have tested them to make sure static presure was not a issue. Heat exchangers and AC coils need to be cleaned. I will tell you this to do a good cleaning I usually spent 1-2 hrs, When I’m finished I would not have a problem eating my diner on the system. Good filters, clean system and properly tuned up are my recomdation to anyone. I’ve included my email feel free to contact me with any questions. [email protected]
A new filter technology for the home, called ULPA (ultra low penetration air), has raised the stakes. ULPA filters block 99.99 percent of particles measuring 0.12 micron, quite a bit smaller than the HEPA threshold. But ULPA filters restrict so much air flow that in practice they are able to clean less air than HEPA filters. For best performance, look for those labeled “true HEPA.”
I have been a plumbing/gas/hvac tech for 19 years, before that I installed ductwork in commercial buildings and office towers. As the article states, unless you have undergone some type of extensive reno, or ducts have become contaminated, paying for cleaning is pointless. Its one thing if you have a 30 year old home that has never had a duct cleaning and you can actually see mounds of dust built up , especially in the return side, then go for it. Keep in mind that most duct cleaning companies will only get 80% of the dust , or less at best. Keep in mind that most of the dust in your home is lint from clothes and linens, and skin cells from you and your pets and is constantly being generated. Dust that builds up in ductwork , generally stays in the ductwork. The power of suggestion, scare tactics, up sell!!!

The EPA says that indoor air is often many times more polluted than outdoor air. Many of these contaminants get stuck or even grow in the ductwork, possibly getting re-circulated into the air you breathe. According to the EPA, “Contaminated central air handling systems can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew and other sources of biological contaminants and can then distribute these contaminants through the home.”
After damage to your HVAC system due to fire or flooding, you shouldn’t really be relying on a duct cleaning company to handle this.  Instead, do some research for your area and hire a reputable HVAC contractor.  It should be an experienced air conditioning technician that evaluates your ductwork after fire or flood who can then replace duct segments if necessary.
The above information is informative, but did the data include the average size of the houses to go with the cost? It is hard to prove over pricing when you don’t have all the facts. Thanks for the information…I did learn something.
Hi, my home office a/c vent has been blowing out blackish granular particles. It only happens with this particular vent. I’ve read lighting candles tend to do something like this… I do light candles every day. Can someone help me with what I should do? Thanks.
While there are reputable, professional HVAC cleaning services out there, there are scams as well. Anytime scare tactics can be used to make the claim that your home might be “unhealthy,” homeowners run the risk of being frightened into emptying their checkbooks.
A complete and in-depth cleaning requires us to go into every room that contains an air duct or cold-air return. At Alpine, the work will not begin until the floors, doorways and outside wall corners are protected. Slip-on shoe covers, floor tarps and plastic corner guards create a barrier between our equipment and your home.

Anyone who works on HVAC systems needs to be licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. According to the EPA, Texas is one of the handful of states that require air duct cleaners to hold a special license.
Air pollutants are 4 to 7 times higher INDOORS than outdoors! We spend 80-90% of our time inside, increasing the risk for allergies, asthma, breathing problems and lung damage, especially in the young and elderly.
I can’t believe I got ripped off by this Air Duct Cleaners. I called them for this $63 coupon per furnace unlimited vents then when they came after he checked it all I hear is I have and leak all is worth $499, $799, $899 per furnace but I told him to just clean the duct and patch the single leak per furnace worth $38 each. Still eanding $899 total. All the work he done is in less than an hour he didnt even go to each vent to clean it. All he did is to path the air leak on that entry pipe to the furnace and open the main venting system, vacuum it, and wash the floor of the vent with a solution. Overall time is about 20 mins talking with me discussing all the option which thinking they made me think I don’t really have an option and 40 mins wash and vacuum he took pictures of before and after of only one furnace. He gave me a receipt without the details on what he has done in the house just the name and price. I think we may need a strict law to punish and control all this companies who do this so other company who do good will despise them.
After all of the duct work on the supply side is completed, we move to the cold-air return system. The main return grill is removed (unless attached to wall or painted surfaces) and the venting is cleaned followed by the vent covers and lines throughout the home.
We recognized the advantages of having the ducts cleaned systems, thus it’s a good idea to seek professional help when needed to clean ventilation systems so the profitability is enhanced and energy economy is ensured. These are two crucial variables that affect spending budget and the family house.
NADCA consulted on the EPA pamphlet and agrees with all but one of its findings, according to NADCA president Michael Vinick. He says NADCA recommends homeowners clean their ducts once every three to five years. “If you have allergies or asthma, you should consider having it done almost annually,” he says.
Outside, your main job is to clean the condenser coil (Photos 2 – 4). The fan inside the condenser coil sucks air through the fins, and as a result, pulls dirt and debris with it. Dust, leaves, dead grass and anything else that collects on the fins will block airflow and reduce the unit’s efficiency. Grass clippings thrown by the lawn mower and “cotton” from cottonwood trees and dandelions are particularly bad offenders. You might have to clear the fins weekly or even daily during the spring “cotton” season! Always begin by shutting off the electrical power (Photo 1).

Bought Amazon Groupon deal for $29. Guy walks in and estimated $900 for all air duct and dryer vent. Then comes down to $600 with free dryer vent. I refuse, he calls office and deal is now $250. I still dont want and his final deal is Ducts and all returns for $100. However, no Brush cleaning, no tapes on vents, no HVAC blower clean up.
After trying to find as good deal on air duct cleaning I thought about researching how to do it ourselves and I’m so glad I did! This rehab house has been sitting for 9 yrs and only God knows what’s been lurking and swirling around for the 2+yrs since we installed the furnace. Now with 2 cats everything gets covered in dust especially in the summer with no central air, only high-powered floor fans. I bake cakes and have to turn them all off to keep the dust, lint, cat hair etc from landing in them! Eeek…and when the sun shines through the window the dust becomes even more visible! Dust, dust, dust…I can’t take it any more and will be so happy when we’re done with this DIY project! Update to follow! Thank you so much!!!! Mmmwah
We moved to a house built in 1965 from a 1915 house with a dirt basement. Against what I anticipated, the 1965 house was much dustier. It was like felt on top of everything. I cleaned and cleaned and it did become less dusty over time. We then found out a cat lady with over 2 dozen cats lived in the house in the past. We then had to get our furnace replaced and I was able to look down some of the duct work, the dirt and debris was 3-5 inches deep. Additionally, the basement ducts were entirely plugged with debris including dirt, seeds, ants, toys, etc. I had already removed what I could from those. We had our ducts cleaned last year, and the dust in the house is greatly reduced. Also have lost the runny nose I got after moving here. There are duct cleaning con artists out there, but ours did a good job.
Don’t be intimidated by the power of this system, you are still in full control. Just like all Rotobrush systems, the aiR+ XP is easy to use, and the angled sides allow you to quickly and efficiently unwrap and coil the hose. Take the lead, as you maneuver this device through your customer’s home.
This was actually a follow-up to duct cleaning and booster fan installation done last fall. The fan had stopped working and I had the Bham ofc. to come out and get it back in sync…..all was done very fast and by folks that I liked meeting last fall and enjoyed seeing them again. I will have to say that calling your Atlanta call center is not what I will do in the future…I will call Jaren at the Bham ofc for good service. My experiences with the center has not been the best but the Bham folks are wonderful and that’s all that counts. Thank you Sears.
Both technicians were very curteous and friendly. I especially liked the fact that they let me know that I would need to change the air duct soon due to age. I would definitely recommend this service to friends/family.
HVAC duct cleaning is as much a scam as fuel injector cleaning in automobiles. There is no discernible improvement in quality from either except it makes money for the people who sell you the service. Just use quality filters and change often, and use quality gas (Shell, Chevron) and you will do just fine.
Yes, all of the Rotobrush air duct cleaning equipment was originally designed and built to safely clean flexible duct work effectively. It is also safe and effective for duct board and metal duct work.
The sanitizing consisted of using a compressed air paint style sprayer with a can the size of a cola to spray the inside of the furnace, filter and cold air return after I turned the heat on for a few minutes to warm it up. It took 30 seconds and the basement room filled with a mist from overspray.
2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them (34 percent)

I was with you until you said avoid steaming cleaning or moisture, there is no way you can remove mold or any other type of biological without moisture. The best way to do this is in fact with a steamer using a commercial disinfectant and a non reactive odor remover so your home smells refreshed and not like a hospital . This is directly contradictory to your article.
Both technicians were very curteous and friendly. I especially liked the fact that they let me know that I would need to change the air duct soon due to age. I would definitely recommend this service to friends/family.

Illness: If someone in your family is suffering from an unexplained allergy-related illness, and you’ve taken every other possible step to decontaminate your home, you may want to consider having your ducts cleaned to see if the HVAC system was the culprit.
Air pollutants are 4 to 7 times higher INDOORS than outdoors! We spend 80-90% of our time inside, increasing the risk for allergies, asthma, breathing problems and lung damage, especially in the young and elderly.
NADCA’s standards dictate that a cleaning doesn’t just sweep the ducts, but addresses every component air passes over, including coils and the central system. The task involves at least a couple of workers, several hours and costly equipment, which is why air duct cleaning costs $400 or more, according to EPA and NADCA.
We clean THE ENTIRE AIR DUCT SYSTEM the RIGHT way. We only use the BEST and latest in technology truck mounted equipment with NADCA trained technicians and adhere to NADCA’s strict guidelines for duct cleaning. We GUARANTEE that your entire HVAC system is cleaned professionally for a fair price with NO add on sales gimmicks.

Dirt, particles, dust and dander build up over time in the metal airways that deliver cool and warm air from your furnace and air conditioner. While the EPA has been unable to prove or disprove the notion, many understandably believe that particles circulate into your indoor air when air blows though dirty vents.
Dear Angie: I’m looking to have my air ducts cleaned but I’ve seen prices vary from $99 to $800. I have not been given an explanation, that I believe, that describes the reason for the price difference. What are your thoughts on the reasons for the wide range of costs? — D.C., Landisville, Pennsylvania.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the service from this company. The crew arrived on time and were very polite and professional. Pricing was competitive compared to the other vent cleaning companies I researched. I will certainly use them again in the future and will recommend them to my family and friends.
Call Beto’s Clean Ducts, we have a promotion for 6-10 air vents 1 sanitizer and 1 blower clean for 375.00 plus tax also if the coils need cleaning that is extra 125.00 Thank You Very Much for your time.
A house breathes just like you an I.For example every time your clothes dryer comes on it automatically creates a negative pressure inside the home.So if air goes out of the living area it has to be replaced…..now look above the ceiling fan ….you see the cover…underneath that is a hole straight to your attic….Now the stuff on your ceiling fan you call dust…call it insulation, rat fecies or anything else that is in your attic that could be pulled in your to a negative pressure.

6. Clean return air registers. Sweep out your return air registers. These will likely be fastened with a screw and require your tool to remove them. Again, brush and sweep as far back into the register piping or cavity as you can.
On the interior, warm, humid air from your home’s interior is blown through the evaporator coil. The cold coil absorbs heat from the air, cooling it, before the air is circulated back into your home. The humidity in the air condenses on the cool surface of the evaporator coil as liquid water, dripping into a pan below. From the pan, the water flows into a drain tube which is typically routed into a basement floor drain, utility sink, or outdoors.
I used SUPERIOR FUEL IN WATERBURY IT DEPENDED ON REGISTERS I HAD BUT THEY WHERE IVERY GOOD THEY WENT DOWN EACH LINE TOOK OFF ALL REGISTERS AND WASHED AND SANITZED THEM. aS THEY DID EACH LINE THERE WAS ALSO A SANTATIZER SPRAYED . No one has addressed mfg homes and doesn’t seem any of the comments are from people in So CA which of course does make a difference as my dust comes from the outside not from the vents. My windows are open pretty much 365 days a year. Secondly mfg homes don’t have basements or attics I keep mine clean with my vacuum as they are only about 2 ft deep. I purchased my home 10 yrs ago and it is a high end home but have never had a problem. I clean my furnace filter about twice a month as I have cats and most everything in there is cat fur. I am not saying they don’t ever need to be cleaned but I am questioning mfg homes, I also clean my own filters in my AC unit outside as the HVAC guy told me too he QUATITY they would sell. I use this same company every year now for my tune up and inspection which takes them about 10 minutes. Not a bad return for them and I don’t mind the $79 fee. If anyone has more info than this on mfg homes please let me know!
However, both EPA and the National Air Duct Cleaners Association — which represents more than 1,000 cleaning companies nationwide — agree there’s some benefit in cleaning debris from ducts, furnaces, central air conditioners and ventilation.
Here in Atlanta we get 6 to 10 $49 coupons in the mail weekly…I have always consider them a complete scam….just had my master bathroom& bedroom and guest bath completely remodeled down to the studs…Had my 3 returns nearest the area sealed to prevent sheet rock dust to spread…it worked and I personally cleaned all 7 returns when a 5 HP , new Rigid shop Vac($99 from HD)…took one hour and I found little evidence that “I need my ducts cleaned” Had quotes from $400 to $600…I use the best air filters for my air handler and change it every 2 to 3 months…..any dust is trapped in it and I believe the Air Duct folks are all cons….
Many homeowners who’ve hired a reputable air duct cleaning contractor are often pleased with the results. While there’s no scientific evidence to prove that vent cleaning has a direct and significant benefit, experts agree there’s some benefit to having air duct cleaning performed, particularly if you hire a skilled professional.
Having your air ducts cleaned by a professional does many more things than save you money by having your HVAC system run efficiently and cleaning up the dust bunnies…Read on about Improving Air Quality.
With lots of sunshine and higher-than-average temperatures, Dallas and its residents rely on having efficient air conditioning systems. To keep the air clean and the systems working efficiently, residents should have their systems inspected once a year. Full professional cleaning only needs to be done in certain circumstances, but it’s best to know what to look for and how to budget for the project before the need arises.
Central Plano- Located 20 miles from downtown, Central Plano offers an easy commute into the city along with excellent schools and expansive parks. The lifestyle that this suburb provides makes it among the top choices for empty-nesters and families alike. This sprawling ‘burb provides a variety of housing at varying price points that cater to a diverse population of guy that came out first and did an inspection told me that I needed my furnace cleaned. I told him that is new and only 6 months old and he told me it was dirty. I inspected it myself and it was clean! He wanted to charge me 750.00 to clean it! I told him he was out of his mind! I would expect that a company like yours would employ honest people! You lost my business from now on!

I am NADCA Certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist. Over the years I have learned on simple answer to this questions: there air duct cleaners and there are pretenders. There will be no benefit at all if you use on the very cheap pretender because they will not really clean anything. On the other hand if you call a qualified air duct cleaner with a NADCA Certification you will, like 99% of my customers, report improvement with your respiratory problems, you will see less dust and the job will pay for itself with energy savings and repair prevention.
We use top of the line equipment and cleaning tools to thoroughly scrub clean all the interior surfaces of your duct system, including main trunk lines to and from the furnace. Our equipment is portable and most jobs are done within 2-4 hours.
Build-up of allergens and bacteria. Allergens and bacteria thrive in moist, dirty environments, so air ducts are the perfect breeding ground. These contaminants are blown directly into your home and sink to the floor, where they hide along baseboards and in your flooring. Children, the elderly, and people with allergies are particularly susceptible to their dangers. Even pets can suffer when air ducts haven’t been properly cleaned.
im buying a house on west coast of Fl close to the water. The inspector said there seemed to be mold at some registers & at some connections in the attic. The pics did show wat appeared to be mold & said its common. What do i do now? im very low on money, looking for an idea. i can replace all the flex tubing in the attic.
Don’t Get Fooled: Keep in mind that intake ducts (room ducts that return air to the heating/cooling unit) are likely to be dirtier than supply ducts (which deliver conditioned air from the HVAC unit), since they often don’t have filters. Make sure any “before-and-after” photos are of the supply ducts, where it’s most important that the air is clean.
Well, if it’s just a piece, I’d throw it away. It’s likely a scrap piece that’s been in there longer than you may have realized and in your cleaning, worked it’s way to visibility. Unfortunately, much debris found in duct is from construction and people using the duct as a dustpan. If you don’t see any parts missing or holes in the ducting, then just toss it and know that they’re that much cleaner.

“honest air duct cleaning _indoor air duct cleaning”

Did you know that cleaning your ducts and vents can help airflow and increase energy efficiency? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), keeping your air ducts and vents clear can increase energy efficiency and indoor air quality. While the cost to clean ducts and vents might sound high, the benefits to homeowners–especially those sensitive to allergens–is worth considering.
I was an HVAC tech and a duct design specialist for 10 years before I stated duct cleaning 20 years ago, I have 8 certifications in mold and mold testing, and I’m here to tell you some of the best and worst duct cleaners I have seen have many certifications, It comes down to work pride and proper cleaning equipment. So get references from friends and family make sure the company has little or no complaints.
Benefect is an all-natural, non-toxic, chemical-free, organic sanitizer that can be fogged into your air duct system to help prevent bacterial build up from various toxins that come in contact with you and your family on a daily basis.
We had a great experience with AirDuct Clean. They were on time which I really appreciate with a busy schedule. The two men that came to my house were professional, courteous and friendly. They finished sooner than I expected. After they left they emailed before and after pics. Great job! I highly recommend this company!! Thanks AirDuct Clean!
If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.

Steve is the person telling the truth here about AC duct cleaning and AC filter cleaning and changing. Many of the other comments come from uninformed homeowners and those who want to get people to hire AC contractors and pay hundreds of dollars for useless services.
I am very interested by your post. We recently had a lead inspection on our property and one thing the lead inspector suggested was to get the air ducts cleaned out. We had our ducts cleaned last year after we under went a large renovation project (since we have a toddler in the house). This year we decided to go for lead compliance and had all our lead removed (we moved out for the work). Recently, my son had a false positive lead test, which prompted us to get a lead dust inspection around the house (including having the vents dust-wiped on the inside). The levels inside the ducts weren’t crazy high (but more than would be acceptable for a floor). As it turned out my son’s lead levels are very low (but not zero). Is it possible however that lead dust from the inside of a vent can come out? Would this be a scenario where you think air duct cleaning would be beneficial?
I am 79 years old, bought a condo & spent a lot of money on it. this winter my first bill was 450.00. had my furnace checked out, which is on the roof. it was old rusted out & leeking oil. i talked to owner & had new unit installed. they came out to clean ducks & they were split & worn out. there is no crawl space because theres a unit above me. my real estate lady or this company will not help me fix this problem.
Most mechanical air filters are good at capturing larger airborne particles, such as dust, pollen, dust mite and cockroach allergens, some molds and animal dander. However, because these particles settle rather quickly, air filters are not very good at removing them completely from indoor areas. Although human activities such as walking and vacuuming can stir up particles, most of the larger particles will resettle before an air filter can remove them.
Normally, you won’t notice the dirt and debris clogging up the ductwork until there is some other reason to open a vent or air duct. For example, having your system inspected for annual maintenance or repairs may reveal that it is time to clean ductwork. Another sign is an increase of dirt and dust accumulation over your office furniture or the zone around your registers and vents.
This just tell us that we need to clean our air vent every once in a while. To prevent the worsening of an existing allergy. People non-sensitive will also benefit from this because they will not develop allergens from an air vent producing a clean and fresh air. Thank you for sharing.
This is my first time taking care of house ,It belong to my sister she is sick.I want to do a good Job.my daughter is  staying with us and the room she’s in is very hot.I need someone who is very good and not so costly. And have great reviews.
Nothing. Your technician was very polite and helpful. Incidentally, I called Sears rather than one of the many duct cleaners that advertise because I felt I would have someone I could trust to be in my home.
I agree about the coupons. While they are often useful, in our case, we (who usually are more intelligent than this) were talked into a more expensive cleaning that ultimately added up to about 900.00. After reading Angie’s articles, we realized what a silly mistake we made. Next time, we will do our research.
Had our ducts cleaned late April, 2016. Sodium Chlorite was sprayed into ducts after cleaning. Ever since, we have been bothered with eye and nasal passage irritation because of a “chemical” and “musty” odor. This odor is present whether or not a/c is on.) We are told the sodium chlorite (“EnviroCon, manufactured by Bio-Cide International) is used in hospital and nursing home settings and is not hazardous to health. The air duct company’s suggestion is that they come out and spray even more sodium chlorite…we absolutely don’t want this done! Have had various other recommendations about what we need to have done to remedy our problem. We will be unable to stay in our home if a resolution cannot be found. We’d be willing to replace the ductwork if necessary. (One professional suggested that the cleaning may have “knocked something loose” inside the ductwork and that is the source of the irritant.) This home was built in 1920…no idea when the present ductwork was installed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

“air duct cleaning needed air duct cleaning facts”

Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing (See diagram).
For example, carbon monoxide is a dangerous gaseous pollutant that is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned, and it is not readily captured using currently available residential gas-phase filtration products.
Commercial systems are often customized to fit the building they serve. They are almost guaranteed to feature added components, and will need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The more difficult the construction is to maneuver, the more you can expect to pay.
Most people are now aware that indoor air pollution is an issue of growing concern and increased visibility. Many companies are marketing products and services intended to improve the quality of your indoor air. You have probably seen an advertisement, received a coupon in the mail, or been approached directly by a company offering to clean your air ducts as a means of improving your home’s indoor air quality. These services typically — but not always — range in cost from $450 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system, depending on:

Well, if it’s just a piece, I’d throw it away. It’s likely a scrap piece that’s been in there longer than you may have realized and in your cleaning, worked it’s way to visibility. Unfortunately, much debris found in duct is from construction and people using the duct as a dustpan. If you don’t see any parts missing or holes in the ducting, then just toss it and know that they’re that much cleaner.

As one of the duct cleaners that do it right it disgusts me to hear the horror stories some of my past customers have had with the companies using scare tactics, bait and switch schemes, and just plain intimidation to make a fast buck. The Ductz franchise as a whole has gone behind other “duct cleaners” in the last year to the tune of almost three-quarters of a million dollars. All of this expense could have been avoided had the customers been able to do some background research before hiring. NADCA is a great organization and should be a minimum requirement for finding a duct cleaner. Other great questions include “How long does the service take?” (2 techs, 4-5 hours for a small house, 7-9+ hours for a two system house), “Do you clean the entire system including all trunk lines and the air handler (blower motor and evaporator coil)?”, “How do you validate the job you have done?” (before and after picture reports work great). Beware of duct cleaners that say their process will solve all your air quality concerns. Duct cleaning is one of several steps to take to rid your home of unwanted dust, dirt, mold, and other allergens.
I’m having my duct work cleaned this Saturday. Have a coupon for $49 through Amazon. Job normally $249. Had my basement remodeled about 18 months ago. The contractors were very thorough at blocking the vents, as far as I can tell. The offer is for HVAC and dryer vent cleaning. My house is 11 years old. I figured, $49 is not much. I appreciate your tips on not getting talked into any additional service, not to use solvents to clean, the certification information and before and after pictures. Very useful and I’ll be sure that all I spend is the $49 for the voucher.
Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space. It is important to keep in mind that dirty air ducts are only one of many possible sources of particles that are present in homes. Pollutants that enter the home both from outdoors and indoor activities such as cooking, cleaning, smoking, or just moving around can cause greater exposure to contaminants than dirty air ducts. Moreover, there is no evidence that a light amount of household dust or other particulate matter in air ducts poses any risk to your health.
Duct cleaning is a complete scam, I was a “duct cleaning technician” for a whole week before I was fired for not upselling elderly widowed women $2000 extra for “toxic mold remediation” when their ducts were spotless to begin with. The last two days I was employed there I worked as a “helper” alongside a technician thats been with the company 7 years. He scammed every customer on mold and would at times get as much as $2500 extra for treating “toxic mold” in a typical 3 bedroom house in the suburbs. Wait…it gets even better, the “Biocide” the company used was simply a cheap $4.99 per gallon bought at Home Depot air freshener with no anti-microbial properties that was fogged into the HVAC system for 5 minutes, maybe using 1/2 cup of the stuff. In order to provide the customer with evidence of “mold infestation” the technician would be given bogus mold tests that always resulted in “toxic spores present” regardless if you swabbed the actual duct or nothing at all. Not to mention the actual duct cleaning job (typically $400) did basically nothing and the homeowner could’ve done a better job with a shopvac
Probably you don’t own a high-powered, truck-mounted vacuum system with 150 foot-hoses; perhaps you can’t afford the cost of such service. But I am going to tell you how you can clean air ducts yourself. Sure, you won’t be able to reach every nook and cranny, but you can still eliminate roughly 85% of the dust in your system without spending any more than the cost of your new furnace filter.
1. Dirt and dust restrict your HVAC system’s heating and cooling. In the winter, dirt-clogged heat exchangers cannot warm the air as efficiently. In the summer, dirt-clogged condensing coils are unable to cool the air as well. These both increase the HVAC systems run time, requiring it to use more fuel and energy to heat and cool your home.
If you don’t agree with duct cleaning, fine. If there are some things that HVAC people can do to make the system need cleaning less often fine, but to suggest that I need to GO TO JAIL????? If you need to knock others to make yourself look better……. If duct cleaning is such a scam, why are their governing bodies like NADCA (which I do NOT belong to),several manufacturers of equipment, and national restoration franchises (I’m not a franchise either) who provide this service? I guess the whole world is stupid and only HVAC people are smart. I suppose I am scamming them when I clean puff backs, water damage, fire damage, and clean their carpets too? Or did I wake up one morning and say “ya know, it is great to be a hard working, honest owner operator, but I would love to provide a service that unlike everything else I do is a con and rips off the 90% referral business I busted my butt to earn”
You cannot control where drywall dust goes in a new home. It will stick to walls, cupboards, etc. It is definitely a good idea to have it done on a new home purchase as the builders don’t do it. Then you should be good to go. Be sure to clean all surfaces in the home first.
I always recommend Matt at Rainbow. I’ve received multiple compliments from my insured’s letting me know what a great job they have done, and how quickly they were able to get the job done. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a fast, honest, & reliable restoration contractor.
There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system. There are several important points to understand concerning mold detection in heating and cooling systems:
With lots of sunshine and higher-than-average temperatures, Dallas and its residents rely on having efficient air conditioning systems. To keep the air clean and the systems working efficiently, residents should have their systems inspected once a year. Full professional cleaning only needs to be done in certain circumstances, but it’s best to know what to look for and how to budget for the project before the need arises.
Mold: If you see mold or other microbial growth on the ductwork, that’s certainly worth addressing. Keep in mind, those substances that appear to be mold should still be confirmed by laboratory analysis. You should also take steps to change conditions in and around the ductwork to prevent future mold growth, such as replacing wet insulation.
Knowledge about air duct cleaning is in its early stages, so a blanket recommendation cannot be offered as to whether you should have your air ducts in your home cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urges you to read this document in it entirety as it provides important information on the subject.
Our experience and commitment to air purification has brought us to where we are today – manufacturing complete air filtration systems & industrial air filtration products that provide the best performance, efficiency and capacity for the money. Our indoor air quality experience has led to the unique Coanda airflow pattern which increases the performance of the products as well as improves heat distribution within your environment. Our patented variable voltage technology increases air filtration efficiency and our variable speed controls fit the demands of the moment.

EPA and NADCA agree that if you do hire someone to clean your air ducts, make sure they know what they’re doing — a poor job is worse than no cleaning at all, as it can kick up particles or even break portions of the HVAC system.
If you do have children or spouses who suffer from allergies or reactions the air turning on, it might be an indication there is something in there making them react. They should speak with their doctors and then get a heating and cooling contractor out if it is recommended that airborne pathogens are the cause of their reaction.
These high-tech units, sometimes called electrostatic precipitators, are also incorporated into the ductwork. As air passes through, a high-voltage current puts an electrical charge on particles. At the other end of the unit, oppositely charged collector plates grab the particles like a magnet. Electronic filters work especially well on smoke particles too small to be trapped in media filters. One independent test found such filters worked about 30 times as well as regular fiberglass filters. (There is no industry yardstick for measuring the effectiveness of whole-house units, because performance is affected by a home’s blower and ductwork.) Unlike media filters, electronic filters never need replacing, but the aluminum collector plates must be cleaned in soapy water every few months. The process of charging particles, called ionization, may produce trace amounts of ozone, a lung irritant (see “Eye on Ions,” page 66). Electronic filters cost $600 to $1,000 installed and require a 120-volt electrical outlet.

Dirt, particles, dust and dander build up over time in the metal airways that deliver cool and warm air from your furnace and air conditioner. While the EPA has been unable to prove or disprove the notion, many understandably believe that particles circulate into your indoor air when air blows though dirty vents.
Cesar and Dennis were very professional in my home and did well with the job. They kept me in the loop the entire process by showing pictures of the vents and explaining everything. I feel bad they had a long day since my home was the last job of the day so I gave them a pop for the road! Good job!
There is no standard measurement for the effectiveness of UVGI cleaners. Typical UVGI cleaners used in homes have limited effectiveness in killing bacteria and molds. Effective destruction of some viruses and most mold and bacterial spores usually requires much higher UV exposure than is provided in a typical home unit. Furthermore, dead mold spores can still produce allergic reactions, so UVGI cleaners may not be effective in reducing allergy and asthma symptoms.
On the other hand, if family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor. EPA has published the following publications for guidance on identifying possible indoor air quality problems and ways to prevent or fix them.
Sneeze. Cough. Wheeze. That’s what the home of an allergy sufferer sounds like around the clock. In Dallas, where allergens are prevalent nearly all year, it’s usually advisable to have routine air duct cleanings. People who have lung conditions and breathing difficulties, including asthma, can benefit from frequent cleanings because they help to prevent the spread of contaminants.
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
A small number of products are currently registered by EPA specifically for use on the inside of bare sheet metal air ducts. A number of products are also registered for use as sanitizers on hard surfaces, which could include the interior of bare sheet metal ducts. While many such products may be used legally inside of unlined ducts if all label directions are followed, some of the directions on the label may be inappropriate for use in ducts. For example, if the directions indicate “rinse with water”, the added moisture could stimulate mold growth.

Yes, ducts can look terribly dusty. However, that dust will not become aerosolized during the normal operation of your furnace. There is an easy way to test this. Rent a particle counter and test the air flowing out of your registers before and after cleaning. You will not see any improvement in the air quality or any reduction in the airborne dust level. Think of it this way. Duct cleaning companies tell you that you need to clean your ducts when you can see a layer of dust in your ducts. Yet that very layer of dust is proof that duct cleaning is unnecessary, because that dust proves that the air movement in your furnace is not fast enough to re-aerosolize the dust.
The workers showed me the vacuum prior to and after the completed work. Once the cleaning process was complete, the vacuum had a huge pile of dust inside. The cleaning gave me peace of mind just knowing the air I was breathing was rid of the dust the home had been accumulating over the years. I highly recommend duct cleaning as well as this company.

HVAC duct cleaning is as much a scam as fuel injector cleaning in automobiles. There is no discernible improvement in quality from either except it makes money for the people who sell you the service. Just use quality filters and change often, and use quality gas (Shell, Chevron) and you will do just fine.
The technician that replaced my blower module said I could definitely benefit from a professional cleaning of the handler and the ductwork, which makes sense. They are going to charge about 500 dollars and bring a crew of people out.
8. Clean out blower compartment and return air boot. With the power off, you can remove the panels on the front of the furnace and access the blower compartment and the return air boot. Use your vacuum to sweep up the dust built up in the blower compartment and return air boot. This is where the great bulk of your dust will be. Since you’re in here, you should clean the furnace fan as well.
It’s 11 years plus in the industry I have only had to sanitize two systems both were slab systems that were in concrete and could be cleaned with a different method than normal duct cleaning. We were able to use water to rinse out the disinfectant. Would you use a chemical on anything else you use to eat or drink with and not rinse it off? The ducts in your home should be thought of as your homes heart and lungs and breathe the same air that you do. And just like us we wouldn’t use bad chemicals in our lungs and heart.
All these pro duct cleaners answer with “it’s common sense, everything operates better when cleaner” etc. But your explanation is correct. Especially so with flex tube ducting where dust gets “stuck” between the lowest valleys (between wire coil supports) where air flow is drastically reduced — which is more than 50 pct of the entire interior surface area of the flex ducting. That sounds like a bad thing but also has a good effect of trapping dust from escaping.
There are a few signs to watch out for to catch them in time. For one, your breathing starts acting up or you start coughing or sneezing, there is probably some buildup in the vents. If you suspect mold or start hearing scritches in your pipes, there’s a good chance you have enough dirt for bigger problems to unfold. You should clean your ducts and vents every few months just to be safe. This is even more important and should be done more frequently if you live in a very humid or dusty climate.

I hired duct cleaning company out of “Service Magic” website. I did not realize the name of his company was Duck cleaning of Central Florida…that should have given me a hint.. The guy did a very poor, incomplete job, and ruined a closet full of clothes when he sprayed up to clean a vent instead of taking it down and cleaning it outside. He left me with more than 1/2 dirty vents and ducts, did not do the air handler in the garage and failed to fog the system. He spent 6 useless hours at my residence and now his insurance is denying coverage..very disappointed in Service Magic….
The first line of defense against airborne contaminants is to keep a house clean and well ventilated. But for some sensitive people that may not be enough. That’s where air filters come in. Household air filters are available in two basic types: media filters, which create a physical barrier that traps minute particles, and electronic filters, which use a high-voltage charge to attract and capture contaminants. A few air filters are hybrids that combine both methods, and some include activated carbon elements to combat odor.
We had Mr. Duct out to perform an air duct cleaning for our residential home and they were great. The price was the same as the one given over the phone and we were very pleased with the results, which they proved through a video camera sweep at the end of the service.
im buying a house on west coast of Fl close to the water. The inspector said there seemed to be mold at some registers & at some connections in the attic. The pics did show wat appeared to be mold & said its common. What do i do now? im very low on money, looking for an idea. i can replace all the flex tubing in the attic.
Certifications: The cleaning company should be certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which sets standards for HVAC system cleaning. The EPA does not certify duct cleaners, so avoid anyone making that claim. Check for relevant licenses and insurance – some states require a license for duct cleaning while others don’t.
Pulling large volumes of air toward the truck, we now feed our soft rubber, high pressure air scrubbing tools down each of the vent lines forcing all of the contaminants into the trunk line where its extracted into the truck.  This removes dirt, dust, pollen, chemical residue and pet dander that has collected over the years.
My house gets extremely dusty. I can dust in the morning and by evening it looks like I have not dusted at all by the end of the week if I have not dusted you can write your name in the dust. Would cleaning my air ducts make a difference?
If not properly installed, maintained and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the home’s living space. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them. If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, it is important to make sure the service provider agrees to clean all components of the system and is qualified to do so. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus negating any potential benefits. Methods of duct cleaning vary, although standards have been established by industry associations concerned with air duct cleaning. Typically, a service provider will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-powered vacuum cleaner.

I have been in the IAQ field for 30 years and have seen it all. I’ve used truck mounted equipment, portable equipment ( the general ) and portable hepa vac equipment with 3500 cfm to 5000 cfm, can suck up a 16 lbs bowling ball. With all this suction power you would think that a little dust in the duct would be no problem. The National air duct association states that without agitation ( rotary brushes) the dust will still be adhered to the inside surface of the duct. So I guess what I’m saying is that Nadca certification is key along with the proper procedures.Consumers can go to the NADCA Website for more great information.
Chimney fires occur when there is a build up of creosote on the chimney flue walls. Creosote can burn at up to 2000℉ causing damage to fireplaces and flue, and possibly igniting surrounding materials.

Vacuum the condenser fins with a soft-bristle brush attachment. The metal fins are delicate; avoid bending them. Clear away weeds, grass and other debris that block airflow through the coil. You often have to unscrew a protective metal case and lift it off to get at the condenser fins.
The key to the continued and efficient operation of your heating and cooling system is periodic maintenance. Cleaning the air duct vent system, and servicing you heating and cooling equipment will keep the system operating at its peak performance. Air ducts are cleaned for two reasons. One: to prevent debris from entering furnace and air conditioning components. Two: to prevent debris from cycling through the home. The air duct cleaning contractor needs to employ cleaning methods which successfully removes debris, and ensures that debris does not enter the occupied space. Most contractors can verify the results of the cleaning through video or pictures.
I believe a $3 [sic] pleated cotton filter is all that is ever needed to keep a system running top notch. A cleaning of the blower squirrel cage and of the evaporator [indoor] coil may be needed one time if fiberglass or no filters have been previously used. The return air grille [or grilles] need vacuumed off occasionally, as they are upstream from the filter. The $3 filter should be changed every 3 months [rule of thumb]….and most of them have a little white square on the cardboard frame to write install date…..and the arrow should point into the duct [if at filter grille]….or towards the furnace [if in ductwork slot]…or towards the blower [if in blower compartment]. My two cents…..

We are a hvac company that provide air duct cleaning service are minimum charge $400 to do a proper air duct cleaning with 2 techs avg 3-6 hours that includes sanitizing. I get phone calls all day about the $99 your not going to get much of a cleaning for that price it for them to get there foot in the door and up sell that the only way for them to stay in business. Just from my 15 years of duct cleaning experience.
I have been told by an excellent company that duct cleaning is never recommended. They said it only damages the duct work and is not really necessary. It was not recommended at all ever. Your comments about this would be appreciated.
I recently did some remodeling and figured I’d get the air ducts cleaned in our 12 year old home. After obtaining 4 estimates between $572 and a whopping $3,075 for 25 vents and 2 air handlers, I knew I was in for a ride. I read through this blog and decided to use a $79 inspection camera I just found online (Home Depot) to take a look at all my ducts by removing the ceiling grilles first and then try to get into the ducts from the other end. From what I have just learned here, I believe that will take care of my “concerns”.

Indoor air pollution is a hot topic these days and like every new industry, everyone is trying to get their piece of the pie.  Air duct cleaning is just one part of a broader industry aimed at increasing indoor air quality and promoting good health.  Duct cleaning is a service provided by some companies who utilize vacuums, brushes and chemical cleaning compounds to scrub the inside of your air conditioning ducts and HVAC coils, including supply and return air ducts, heat exchangers and evaporator coils.  The claim is that this will increase the health of you and your family by decreasing the number of contaminants in your air.  If we are being completely objective, however, I think it is important to point out at this point that according to the CDC, there is no evidence that duct cleaning increases your health.  More from the CDC can be found under: CDC – Air Duct Cleaning.
This is a chimney that has not been cleaned on a routine basis. It has a Fisher insert in the fireplace and caused a large amount of creosote build up in the chimney which resulted in a flue fire. The flue tiles cracked as a result of the flue fire and now requires re-lining with a stainless steel pipe.

The next step was cleaning the cold air returns. He found a good spot to drill an 8” hole for his vacuum hose. The procedure matched the other air ducts except that when he finished at the two cold return registers he drilled several holes in the cold ducts in the basement and blasted air into them. Because of our houses age and the upgraded return system, I noticed that the main sheet metal return duct had no top but was just butted up against the ceiling in the basement. When he blasted air in, dust and crap shot out the edges along the ceiling. Once he finished that he removed the filter and “swept” out anything at the bottom of the return with his hand into the 8” hose.
Gratuitous Rant: First, I’ll be honest with you…I think this is all a bunch of voodoo.  If you properly replace your air conditioning filters, on the proper interval of every three months, then having your air ducts cleaned wouldn’t be necessary in the first place.  Second, having replaced a lot of ductwork in my day, let me tell you that if you have flex-duct, which you probably do, having your air ducts “cleaned” is going to tear them all up on the inside.  On the inside, they are plastic about as thick as a disposable tupperware container.  They are meant to maintain proper air flow over a 10-20 year lifespan, NOT to be scraped with a brush and vacuum.  We’ve had to replace a lot of ductwork in our day from people having their ducts cleaned.  That being said, you are here because you are interested in having your air ducts cleaned, so I’ll be nice from here on out…but now you know my thoughts.
Interesting. Giuliano Cuete and Carlo Olcese have the exact same post about pretenders and being NADCA certified, word for word. So how do you become NADCA certified? And does that mean you are not a scam artist or a “blow and do” ripoff? hmmm, interesting. The EPA says that under normal conditions, a properly maintained system should NEVER need it’s ducts cleaned.
If you switch off the air conditioner (at the thermostat) at any time, wait at least five minutes before switching it back on. Once off, the compressor needs time to “decompress.” If you restart it too soon, you’ll stress the motor. Many thermostats have automatic time delays built into the circuitry to protect the compressor from this problem.
The Carpet and Rug Institute awarded Sears the Platinum Seal of Approval, which is the Highest Level of Performance for a Carpet Cleaning System. This deep-cleaning process removes harmful allergens, dust particles, and other debris that settles in the carpet.
You usually don’t have easy access to the evaporator coil that’s inside the plenum or a main duct near the furnace (Fig. A). If you can get to it, vacuum the bottom side of its fins with a soft brush attachment.
Locate the filter enclosure on the indoor furnace/AC where the large fresh air return duct enters the unit. You may need a screwdriver to turn the latch to open the door to the filter enclosure. Remove the old filter and install the new filter, matching the air-flow direction arrows on the filter to the arrows on the unit. Close and latch the door.
Jeremy – I allow all comments. Particularly ones like this because it gives me the opportunity to educate people. First off, if you really read the article, I clearly state this is a pretty good way to go if you don’t have the money for professionals. I’m guessing you’re a duct cleaner and don’t want me showing people a nice alternative that will save them money and improve their air quality far more than doing nothing. My articles are not aimed to help or hurt anyone’s business…only to help people who can’t afford such services to do the best they can to help themselves enjoy these luxuries when it’s within their ability to do so. I stand by every word in this article. With over 20 years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running large commercial projects and everything in between, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading…or kind of anyway.

I called a company name “GREEN RHVAC” with their $29.00 one system air duck cleaning. When the guy came with a truck I asked him to tell me how much he will charge and he said that if he gave me price and I didn’t want the service then he would charge me $89 or he would tell me how much he charge me after he finished the work. I immoderately sense that I made mistake to call him to my house. To cut my lost I asked him to give me the price and it was $1600 for two systems house. I paid $100 to him for my lesson to learn and search online to find this site is very helpfully and I should do it before to call anyone for air duck cleaning.
It takes more than a quick brushing to remove the dust, dander and other harmful particles from ductwork. ZEROREZ® uses the most technologically advanced duct cleaning process available. The best part? We can install an air purification and filtration system on the same day.
Furnace, Duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning. The crew was excellent, arrived on time, took their time. Explained everything they were doing. I will definitely use them again. And Recommend them to Friends.

“top quality air duct cleaning |air duct cleaning services”

I have worked cleaning HVAC in my area for almost 5 years. I always do a thorough inspection and cleaning, providing before and after photos. I have completed some jobs where I felt that it was not entirely necessary, but ultimately what the customer wanted. With that being said, I have endless photos of unspeakable horrors. Hotels are usually nasty, post construction mess is certain, pets and kids create lots off debris, bugs congregate and die, then spiders set up and die, I have even had one supply that was nearly plugged with sand!
I have a problem with most of these statements which I will discuss in more detail in the next section, but of the above reasons to clean your ducts I would have to say that there is only one that I would take seriously: Prior to occupancy of a new home.  Everything else will be addressed in our next section.
The Rotobrush cleaning process is effective in all types of ductwork including sheet metal, flex duct, and fiberboard ductwork. You can even connect the Roto-Vision video inspection system to the Roto- brush so both the technician and you can see-live-what you are cleaning inside the ductwork!
I was very happy with their service. When they came, they were professional and did a great job. It ended up being a challenge for them to get behind my dryer but they were able to do it and they even cleaned up all the dust that was behind it. Will definitely call them again to clean and would highly recommend them.
Heavy duty air duct whip used to clean out your vents or return with compressed air. Easily connects with a air hose to a compressor. It requires at least 90 psi to run efficiently.  Two extra whips a…
I am sure we all are pretty okay at keeping out houses clean, right? The floors get mopped or vacuumed pretty regularly, clutter is picked up and surfaces are dusted. But have you considered your air vents? You know, those spots on the floor where all your warm air comes out to keep your house comfortable? As you can imagine, those can get pretty nasty. But with just a few minutes and some basic supplies, those vents can be clean and sanitized. Let’s get started!
A good air filter, replaced frequently, as well as a sealed system make duct cleaning a waste of time and money. I take the access plate off the furnace plenum and inspect the A-coil frequently. It is squeaky clean, invariably. Why? The air filter grabs 99% of the dust and airborne particles, hair, etc., before it reaches the coil.

The air duct cleaning exceeded all of our expectations – the cleaners were polite and really wanted to make sure we understood their NADCA process. It was a bit complicated and took them a few hours to complete, but the price was quoted and our vents were totally clean!
The important maintenance steps are fairly simple, but if this is the first time you’ve cleaned the unit, allow about a half day to carefully work through the steps. If you’re not up to the task, call a pro (look under “Air Conditioning Contractors” in your Yellow Pages). Cleaning and servicing a central air conditioner costs $100 to $250.
NADCA experts argue the need for cleaning depends on a variety of factors, including pets, smoking, recent renovations, local weather conditions and overall home cleanliness. Vinick says a good contractor will offer to do an inspection beforehand for a nominal charge, if any, to see if a cleaning is necessary.
In 1974 we began our relationship with Honeywell, a major manufacturer, when we agreed to produce commercial electronic air cleaners for them – an agreement that would last 10 years. Shortly thereafter, we also began designing and producing Honeywell’s industrial electrostatic precipitators. This line later grew to include disposable mechanical filter systems.
2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them (34 percent)
The fact is if they are dirty why not clean them. As for the Dr’s comment about if it is not disrupted it is fine. As a pet owner sometimes un disrupted pet hair will sit in the corner of a room or under a counter un disrupted but I still clean it when I notice it. Just because you cant see it doesn’t mean you should leave it there to collect more and more. The people that don’t want there air ducts clean either simply cant afford it but would like it done. OR! the crowd that are to cheap.. You should Clean all portions of your house.
When servicing air conditioners, we are sometimes asked, how often should you clean your air ducts?  Those of you who have read our articles, know that we are a small, U.S. Veteran-Owned HVAC company and pride ourselves on giving people honest, straight answers.  Cleaning air ducts is a hot topic in recent times because people are concerned for their health, and indoor air quality is an important part of that.  To be perfectly honest though, the real question you need to be asking is, should I have my air ducts cleaned at all?  The answer to this depends on who you ask and there is an entire industry that has popped-up (almost overnight) that is based on air duct cleaning and indoor air quality.  I will tell you that All Systems Mechanical HVAC does not offer residential air duct cleaning for a couple of very important reasons: the most noteworthy of which is that, in our experience, if your air ducts actually need a cleaning, then something bigger has already gone wrong with your system; secondly, cleaning your air ducts isn’t all that effective and can damage them.  So, is AC duct cleaning necessary?  The short answer is no, but to answer this question more in-depth, this article will discuss what air duct cleaning is, the pros and cons of having your air ducts cleaned, whether or not you should spend the money, and if not, what you should be doing instead.
To find companies that provide duct cleaning services, check your Yellow Pages under “duct cleaning” or contact the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) at the address and phone number in the information section located at the end of this guidance. Do not assume that all duct cleaning service providers are equally knowledgeable and responsible. Talk to at least three different service providers and get written estimates before deciding whether to have your ducts cleaned. When the service providers come to your home, ask them to show you the contamination that would justify having your ducts cleaned.

I’d have to disagree with all of your statements. Not only are they derived from no experience in the field, you are missing keys facts. Ducts even if air tight will get dirty. If they are not getting dirty, it means they are not working. Your returns side of the duct work is always under negative pressure when the system is operational. Therefore it is always drawing air in. Seeing how dust is made up mostly from dead skin humans shed daily. Around 1.6 Pounds of skin a year per human. Living in your home anything that is air born will be drawn back towards the cold air returns. That is what they are designed for, to draw stale air back to the system to be filtered and sent back through the house.Homes with carpet will actually have cleaner duct work than home with all tile or hardwood. This is because carpets hold onto dust particles and you vacuum them up. Whereas on hardwood or tile, dust can run freely back to the returns. Even if a duct system was sealed 100%, which is next to impossible to achieve 100% would still need to be cleaned. The cleaning may only have to be every 7-10 years for example. Most homes require every 5-7 years. And that’s if it was done properly the first time. If you constantly hire people that have no or minimal knowledge of duct cleaning, You home would require cleaning more often. Every 2 years. That’s a trade secret, The longer they recommend before the next cleaning, the odds are they did it right. That’s not to say there aren’t people that lie, because there are. Just have your duct cleaner take pictures before and after cleaning. Not just an outside view. Get in there, picture entire joist liners, Whole main runs and even long round pipes. Also it helps to have a company that guarantees their work. If it’s not done right, they will come back and do it until it is. Most companies that do this make sure it is right the first time. Your not getting paid to do the job twice.
Residents looking to stretch their housing budgets and find a little more space to spread out often find themselves checking out real estate in one of Dallas’s suburbs. Each area offers its own vibe along with reasonably easy access to major highways, making commuting a breeze.
how effective is duct cleaning when i have skunk odor in my home, and will duct cleaning spew the smell right back into my home. I had my home sprayed by a skunk, or I may have a dead skunk deep inside my home somewhere that we can not get to
In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors. – Environmental Protection Agency.

“air duct cleaning services near me what does air duct cleaning do”

Quality and price should come hand in hand, a too-good-to-be-true price for an efficient air duct cleaning will not give you the quality that you wanted. To make sure you are getting your money’s worth, check reviews of air duct cleaning companies, certifications from industry since this work requires continuous learning due to new techniques and research breakthrough from time to time. Make sure to shop around and get written estimates first.
The bottom line is: no one knows. There are examples of ducts that have become badly contaminated with a variety of materials that may pose risks to your health. The duct system can serve as a means to distribute these contaminants throughout a home. In these cases, duct cleaning may make sense. However, a light amount of household dust in your air ducts is normal. Duct cleaning is not considered to be a necessary part of yearly maintenance of your heating and cooling system, which consists of regular cleaning of drain pans and heating and cooling coils, regular filter changes and yearly inspections of heating equipment. Research continues in an effort to evaluate the potential benefits of air duct cleaning.
Tyler – Yes. If the breaker to the furnace is off, you should be safe under normal circumstances. A simple voltage detector is always nice to have though to be sure. You just touch it to anything and if there is voltage, it will blink and/or beep. Only costs like $20 and is useful for many things. Thanks for reading.
I noticed a lot of negative feedback, though unfortunately there are many dishonest companies out there. I currently work with a company that cleans duct work and we DO NOT use any scare tactics or up sell services or equipment. Once every 10years of course there are exceptions. We clean supply, returns, air handler, housing, motor, and fan. Though be discerning when qualifying anyone to work in your home. I would ask for REAL REFERENCES to contact.
Ask them for their contractor’s license – do not hire an unlicensed duct cleaning company because there will be no insurance that the job will be done correctly, and it will be impossible to take recourse against them if it isn’t.  We are talking about a $1000 investment here, so do some research.
The cleaning of air ducts is accomplished with the use of a variety of tools, usually consisting of the combination of a high-powered vacuum and an array of agitators (to loosen debris) and air wands and snakes (to move it to the desired end point). The specific air duct cleaning tools used will depend on the level of cleaning needed. In homes whose ducts are cleaned regularly, an industrial vacuum in the main trunk lines and air wands utilized at each vent may suffice, but more often than not, an agitator such as a tentacled air whip or rotating brush is needed. When an extreme cleaning is necessary or desired, such as in the case of transite ducts, or when drywall dust is present, an agitator such as the Viper Microline is utilized in every vent.
Air Duct Cleaning companies supposed to come up with the packages and clear explanation what and how they going to do the job. Method described below by Steve Marshall called “Push and Pull” and it is one of the most effective ways to remove dust and debris from the “length of your house”.
The EPA estimates that the air inside a home can be up to 100 times dirtier than the air outdoors, and most people spend up to 90% of their day inside. Experts suggest that your home’s air ducts should be cleaned every 5 to 10 years, depending on how you live and if you have pets.  You also should have your air ducts cleaned after construction or a renovation project. When you buy a new home, having its air ducts cleaned before you move in helps ensure the home’s ducts are free of contaminants left behind by prior owners.
Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. The best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate the sources of pollutants, and to ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. The ventilation method may, however, be limited by weather conditions or undesirable levels of contaminants in outdoor air. If these measures are insufficient, an air cleaning device may be useful.
With reunions and other get-togethers scheduled during the holiday season, most people want to look their best at this time of year. For some, that means filling in those wrinkles with a bit of botox, or having a nip and tuck down here and there. || Posted November 23 2013
6. Clean return air registers. Sweep out your return air registers. These will likely be fastened with a screw and require your tool to remove them. Again, brush and sweep as far back into the register piping or cavity as you can.
Many of the portable air cleaners tested by AHAM have moderate to large CADR ratings for small particles. However, for typical room sizes, most portable air cleaners currently on the market do not have high enough CADR values to effectively remove large particles such as pollen, dust mite and cockroach allergens.

Dallas, Texas, the ninth-largest city in the country, features a glitzy skyline and cosmopolitan lifestyle along with a friendliness that’s hard to find in many large metropolises. Plenty of cultural amenities, a vibrant arts scene, and a delicious array of restaurants make Dallas an appealing destination for residents and visitors alike. The sprawl and spread of the city’s neighborhoods and suburbs translates to long commutes for most city residents.
In reading through all this about duct cleaning, THE ONE preventative measure people need to realize is that a poorly installed HVAC system that is not sealed and air tight to ensure that ALL indoor air passes through a GOOD air filtration system IS THE best means of ensuring your ducts remain clean. Duct cleaning does not now and will NEVER improve an HVAC systems efficiency. Proper maintenance and installation are the key just as improper installation practices allow for dust infiltration into the duct system. I am a state licensed contractor in Texas, and unless people have their hvac system sealed and/or properly installed, duct cleaning is an absolute waste of money. My duct system is 12 years old as is as clean today as the day I installed the system with ductwork. SO before ANYONE jumps on the bandwagon of duct cleaning, get with your hvac professional FIRST.
I have been a plumbing/gas/hvac tech for 19 years, before that I installed ductwork in commercial buildings and office towers. As the article states, unless you have undergone some type of extensive reno, or ducts have become contaminated, paying for cleaning is pointless. Its one thing if you have a 30 year old home that has never had a duct cleaning and you can actually see mounds of dust built up , especially in the return side, then go it.

“The free estimate not only have me an exact price for my service, but also some education on my a/c system. When they did the service they were very friendly and efficient. And along the way, showed me what was being done, and the before-and-after condition of my vents and ducts. Since we just bought our house, I wanted to give the vents and ducts a thorough cleaning and scrubbing. After seeing what came out, I am so glad I did! I will definitely have them back for my yearly servicing.”
