While there are reputable, professional HVAC cleaning services out there, there are scams as well. Anytime scare tactics can be used to make the claim that your home might be “unhealthy,” homeowners run the risk of being frightened into emptying their checkbooks.
For example, carbon monoxide is a dangerous gaseous pollutant that is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned, and it is not readily captured using currently available residential gas-phase filtration products.
Inspect the system before cleaning to be sure that there are no asbestos-containing materials (e.g., insulation, register boots, etc.) in the heating and cooling system. Asbestos-containing materials require specialized procedures and should not be disturbed or removed except by specially trained and equipped contractors.

Demonstrate visible evidence of microbial growth in your duct work. Some service providers may attempt to convince you that your air ducts are contaminated by demonstrating that the microorganisms found in your home grow on a settling plate (i.e., petri dish). This is inappropriate. Some microorganisms are always present in the air, and some growth on a settling plate is normal. As noted earlier, only an expert can positively identify a substance as biological growth and lab analysis may be required for final confirmation. Other testing methods are not reliable.
1. Dirt and dust restrict your HVAC system’s heating and cooling. In the winter, dirt-clogged heat exchangers cannot warm the air as efficiently. In the summer, dirt-clogged condensing coils are unable to cool the air as well. These both increase the HVAC systems run time, requiring it to use more fuel and energy to heat and cool your home.
With reunions and other get-togethers scheduled during the holiday season, most people want to look their best at this time of year. For some, that means filling in those wrinkles with a bit of botox, or having a nip and tuck down here and there. || Posted November 23 2013
Sears Air Duct Cleaning follows the duct-cleaning guidelines established by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) guidelines. The technician covers the floor and install corner gardens to prevent damage to your home, attaches a powerful vacuum to the main duct, and then uses specialized tools to knock the dust loose so the vacuum can collect it. Before leaving, the air-duct cleaning technician answers any questions you might have and makes sure you’re satisfied with the work.
Remove the outer covers and use the brush attachment on a powerful shop vacuum to remove all outside dirt. Then, using a gentle stream from a garden hose, spray through the fins from the inside out to remove any built up dirt or debris from between them. Never use a pressure washer, since the pressure can damage the fins. If the fins are particularly dirty, use a commercially available fin cleaning spray (available at home improvement centers; read and follow manufacturer directions).
I have to to admit that I was little skeptical of the air duct cleaning ads you see in coupon mailers, but Mr. Duct really changed the way I perceived the industry. Their representatives were knowledgable and, more importantly, honest. I really appreacited their attention to detail and I was happy with the quality of the work.
What if you just moved into a new house but the air conditioner is not due for a replacement?  This is the only circumstance in which I would consider having your ducts cleaned.  I would also recommend that the cleaner you choose be an HVAC contractor as well so they can check your ductwork for leaks.

Over time, the pad upon which the condenser unit sits can begin to tip as the soil settles beneath it. An out-of-level condenser unit can cause the compressor within to fail early. Check the condenser for level and use rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level. Service Experts’ Moody adds this exception: “If you have a heat pump system, it’s okay for the pad to be slightly sloped away from the home’s foundation to allow for defrost run-off during the winter.”
Experts do agree that moisture should not be present in ducts and if moisture and dirt are present, the potential exists for biological contaminants to grow and be distributed throughout the home. Controlling moisture is the most effective way to prevent biological growth in all types of air ducts.
When we bought our house we found a lot of debris including soda cans had fallen in the floor ducts which we found without grills. I have no doubt there is ample construction dust, moldering pet fur and perhaps a few mummified rodents in our ducts.
There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system. There are several important points to understand concerning mold detection in heating and cooling systems:

The most efficient way to filter household air is through your home’s forced-air heating or central air-conditioning system. The filters are built into the return-air ductwork, trapping particles as air passes through. Such systems are passive; as long as the fan is running, are constantly filtering all the air in your house. Whole-house filters come in four main types.
Excellent Job by Mr. Duct: Furnace Cleaning. Very easy to set up an appointment. They were right on time. The technician, Brain was very polite and professional. Job well done and very cooperative. I highly recommend Mr. Duct. They followed up on the service the next day, which was great. Over all excellent service.

While your furnace filter is designed to trap this particulate matter and prevent it from entering your air ducts, often particles still get through. The amount of particles your HVAC filter traps coincides with the quality of air in your home: the lower the quality of air, the more particles your filter will trap, and the more particles are likely to get through the filter. If these particles are allowed to build up, your HVAC system can become less efficient, having to operate longer to heat or cool your home. An inefficient HVAC system can result in inconsistent heating or cooling, higher utility costs, and expensive HVAC unit repairs (for instance, an A-coil or blower motor) if the problem is left unchecked. Air duct cleaning from Sears, which focuses on the dirt in your air ducts, can also boost the efficiency of a dirty HVAC system, cleaning out the particulate matter that can hinder HVAC effectiveness.
Unscrew the top grille and hold it open. The fan will usually come with it, so support it carefully to avoid stretching the electrical wires and stressing the connections. If the fan doesn’t lift out, avoid hitting it with a direct spray of water when you clean the fins.
What if you move into a 20 year old house and find that the people who owned it previously NEVER replaced the filter? It was so dirty that the HVAC system did not work at all. For most people – duct cleaning is NOT a waste of time or money. You must not have allergies. I have very bad ones plus asthma. It makes it very hard for me if I don’t get it done every few years. By the way – the ducts get dusty just sitting there – especially without air going through them. Dust settles on them just like it does the furniture.
The Environmental Protection Agency claims that indoor air has been found to be up to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. Now consider, that most people spend between 60% to 90% of their time indoors…the facts can be quite alarming.

All these pro duct cleaners answer with “it’s common sense, everything operates better when cleaner” etc. But your explanation is correct. Especially so with flex tube ducting where dust gets “stuck” between the lowest valleys (between wire coil supports) where air flow is drastically reduced — which is more than 50 pct of the entire interior surface area of the flex ducting. That sounds like a bad thing but also has a good effect of trapping dust from escaping.
Is duct cleaning worth it? There is not a yes or no answer that suits everyone. On an Air Force base, the system was not air tight and there was leakage around the filters. The system got dirty. A professional company was called out. The Duct was big enough that a technician could go the metal duct and clean it. There was a new Air Handler installed and things were sealed up better. in this case it was worth it.
I just moved into a 1200 sq ft townhouse. Within 2 hours there’s a film on my glasses. It is high humidity and high Temps outside so I have the ac on. I think there’s a lot of dust, but I don’t think there’s mold, although there is a strange smell in here. What do you suggest?

Had my air ducts cleaned with company named WellDuct in Edison New Jersey, total cost was $450. Have a two floor condo, technicians said the system was never cleaned, it took them about three hours. Since I am just moving in, I can not tell the difference. They collected about 3-4 pounds of dust, is that normal amount or should be more?
I purchased one of those Amazon air duct cleaning coupons for 49.99. When the company showed up, they removed the vent closest to the air intake and immediately told me I needed $1800.00 for all new duct work. They said they could not clean the system until new duct work was installed. I thanked them and said I would give them a call. The only call I made was to Amazon to get a refund. I know I didn’t need new duct work. Be careful to not fall for unscrupulous salesmen and their pitches and scare tactics.

Has the service provider adequately demonstrated that duct work and plenums are clean? (Plenum is a space in which supply or return air is mixed or moves; can be duct, joist space, attic and crawl spaces, or wall cavity.)
If not properly installed, maintained and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the home’s living space. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them. If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, it is important to make sure the service provider agrees to clean all components of the system and is qualified to do so. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus negating any potential benefits. Methods of duct cleaning vary, although standards have been established by industry associations concerned with air duct cleaning. Typically, a service provider will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-powered vacuum cleaner.
I would like to add that a lot of the dust is from your home and mostly found in your return vents and return ducting because as it pulls the air into the ducting from your house, along with the dust and moisture, some of it will gravitate towards the bottom of the ducting due to
Joshua and Andre, Orlando did such outstanding work in my house, that I’m going to recommend their services to everyone in our sub division on our list sevre. Jeremy – I allow all comments. Particularly ones like this because it gives me the opportunity to educate people. First off, if you really read the article, I clearly state this is a pretty good way to go if you don’t have the money for professionals. I’m guessing you’re a duct cleaner and don’t want me showing people a nice alternative that will save them money and improve their air quality far more than doing nothing. My articles are not aimed to help or hurt anyone’s business…only to help people who can’t afford such services to do the best they can to help themselves enjoy these luxuries when it’s within their ability to do so. I stand by every word in this article. With over 20 years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running large commercial projects and everything in between, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading…or kind of anyway.
Go ahead and look inside your system where you change your air filter. A buildup of dust and debris means it is time to clean the system. According to the HVAC Inspection, Maintenance, and Restoration Association (NADCA), a six-room house can collect as much as 40 pounds of dust, pet dander, and chemicals in its air ducts each year! This dirty air is recycled over and over again throughout your home, five to seven times a day. How does this affect your home? Here’s a list of common problems in homes with dirty air vents that haven’t been cleaned in five or more years:
Are you suffering from headaches or sinus problems? Do you dust your furniture, only to find a sprinkling of fine dust settling down on everything again shortly afterwards? Chances are that it’s time to clean your air ducts. For over 20 years, Air Quality Systems has been providing Norcross and the greater Atlanta area with premier air duct cleaning. We specialize in removing dust, dirt, debris, and mold from residential and commercial HVAC systems.
Just a little friendly advice… you should still research a company, just because they have a website doesn’t mean much. You would be surprised at how easy it actually is to build a website. Almost anyone with a minimal amount of computer savvy can build one, or probably knows someone than can build one.
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Colleen – I assume you have underground ducting then and you would need to have them cleared and sealed which will likely require a fair amount of money and a professional. If they aren’t underground and you’re experiencing this then it sounds like your ducts are in need of insulating because they are in an unconditioned space and the inner and outer temps are creating condensation. Thank you for reading.
Many people start thinking about if they should have the ductwork in their home or business cleaned. The answer is YES! Duct cleaning can improve indoor air quality & increase the efficiency of your heating system. With energy cost on the rise, it makes sense to improve airflow & system efficiency by cleaning the trapped pollutants out of your air ducts. Your family will breathe cleaner air during the heating season, an added benefit for allergy/asthma sufferers & those runny noses. Be careful, not all duct cleaners are the same. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), ther are some qualifications to consider before hiring a company to clean your air ducts. The first is to make sure the company is state licensed and affiliated with the NADCA. Also, homeowners should avoid sales gimmicks. Cheaper does not always mean better. An average cleaning job with a quality company will cost between $300-$500. Cleaning your air ducts can result in improved air flow, decreased energy cost, reduction in allergens, less dusting, & clean air- NOW THAT’S A DIFFERENCE!

While some home air cleaning devices may be useful in some circumstances, EPA makes no broad endorsement of their use, nor specific endorsement of any brand or model. This document describes performance characteristics associated with several types of air cleaners sold to consumers for home use. It does not discuss the effectiveness of air cleaners installed in the HVAC systems of large buildings, such as apartments, offices, schools or public buildings.
Some portable air cleaners sold in the consumer market are ENERGY STAR® qualified. Please note the following disclaimer on their packaging: “This product earned the ENERGY STAR® by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by EPA. Portable air cleaners generally contain a fan to circulate the air and use one or more of the air cleaning devices discussed above. Portable air cleaners may be moved from room to room and used when continuous and localized air cleaning is needed. They may be an option if a home is not equipped with a central HVAC system or forced air heating system.
Removing dust and debris from ventilation might require you to hire a professional to get down on the floor if you have floor vents, so be sure to speak with them about your furniture and other valuables near the vents to avoid any damages or problems.

After months of respiratory infections and then having my lung partially collapse my landlord finally agreed to clean my air ducts but had the apartment complex carpet cleaning guy come do it. He was shocked and horrified. I was breathing in squirrel feces and tons of it for months alongside a ton of mold and meldew. The air intake is located in a closet outside my apartment on the balcony and the door to the closet had a big enough space underneath for squirrels to crawl in. He had to sweep all the poop and straw nest they made in there. It filled a quarter of a garbage bag. I have Lupus and it was not until I threatened to sue after getting out of the hospital my landlord finally did something. The amount of stuff that was coming out of my vents was crazy. For months, everything I cooked kept getting gritty stuff in it and I finally put two and two together and figured out it was the the ducts. Wish I would have found this info sooner. Thank you for taking the time to write this and share.
Build-up of allergens and bacteria. Allergens and bacteria thrive in moist, dirty environments, so air ducts are the perfect breeding ground. These contaminants are blown directly into your home and sink to the floor, where they hide along baseboards and in your flooring. Children, the elderly, and people with allergies are particularly susceptible to their dangers. Even pets can suffer when air ducts haven’t been properly cleaned.
We moved to a house built in 1965 from a 1915 house with a dirt basement. Against what I anticipated, the 1965 house was much dustier. It was like felt on top of everything. I cleaned and cleaned and it did become less dusty over time. We then found out a cat lady with over 2 dozen cats lived in the house in the past. We then had to get our furnace replaced and I was able to look down some of the duct work, the dirt and debris was 3-5 inches deep. Additionally, the basement ducts were entirely plugged with debris including dirt, seeds, ants, toys, etc. I had already removed what I could from those. We had our ducts cleaned last year, and the dust in the house is greatly reduced. Also have lost the runny nose I got after moving here. There are duct cleaning con artists out there, but ours did a good job.
Ultimately, cleaning the ducts of your HVAC system is not a do-it-yourself project. And it’s certainly not a job for a cheap guy with an air compressor in a minivan, either. A thorough cleaning can only be performed by using industry-standard equipment designed to handle the size and volume of all kinds of homes. That’s why you can trust the trained professionals of Direct Energy.
Downtown- Pedestrian-friendly with a variety of hot spots, boutiques, galleries, and museums, downtown Dallas has a lot to offer its residents. My father started in the business of home comfort back in 1968, an I around 1986. We still don’t have a duct cleaning machine. I am sure there are always applications for all tools in this industry. However I missed where anyone talked about where dust even comes from……….We do not have these little dust machines sitting in a corner puffing out little clouds of dust….soooo where does it come from?
Your HVAC unit and air ducts deliver heated or cooled air throughout your home year-in and year-out. The air your HVAC unit produces travels through your air ducts and heats or cools your home through the air vents in each room. The EPA defines the dust and other particles in your home’s air as particulate matter, “a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets.” The EPA also notes that, “Particle pollution is made up of a number of components, including acids (such as nitrates and sulfates), organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particle.” 2 If you remove your furnace filter and hold it up to the light, you can probably see several hundred of these minuscule particles floating in the air.
The most important thing to know about achieving improved indoor air quality through Air Duct and HVAC cleaning is that there are no different levels of cleaning services. Anything less than complete cleaning of all various heating & cooling components of an air systems, Usual components are: the air ducts, registers, diffusers, grills, heat exchangers, coils, fan motor and housing and removal of all contaminants is unacceptable, and could leave you with more issues than you had before the cleaning. If improper equipment or procedures are used, contractors could make dormant contamination airborne and fail to collect all of it. If this happens, the next time your system is re-energized all that contamination could potentially go into the living space.
I hope this further explains the situation. HVAC is very technical, requires a wide variety of uncommon tools and I try to keep it easy to understand to the average homeowner. Beyond that, there could be licensing required by law in certain cases.
I am reading theses emails from home owners and HVAC Duct Cleaning Companies. My Advice Simple. In NC where I live and work, the air duct cleaning Industry is unregulated. There are less then honest companies selling their services every day – even on Angie’s List! I know – I own and operate a HVAC restoration company and see the scams every day!
Cre8tor, this comes at the perfect time for me: the dust in my house has been increasing (and I hate dusting!) and I have been looking to the ads for duct cleaning services with new interest. Thank you for this clear and easy directions on how to do it, I foresee duct cleaning being added to my spring cleaning list! 🙂
The key to the continued and efficient operation of your heating and cooling system is periodic maintenance. Cleaning the air duct vent system, and servicing you heating and cooling equipment will keep the system operating at its peak performance. Air ducts are cleaned for two reasons. One: to prevent debris from entering furnace and air conditioning components. Two: to prevent debris from cycling through the home. The air duct cleaning contractor needs to employ cleaning methods which successfully removes debris, and ensures that debris does not enter the occupied space. Most contractors can verify the results of the cleaning through video or pictures.
We are certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). The NADCA protocol is set to protect consumers against “blow-and-go” companies who use inadequate equipment and methods. Periodic cleaning of your home’s HVAC system can help to prevent the accumulation of pet dander, allergens, construction debris, and other dirt particulates within your heating and cooling system.
Studies by the EPA have shown that indoor air pollutants can be up to 10 times higher than outdoor levels. Homes and offices have proven home to more than 105 known carcinogens, increasing the risk to occupants.
If you have a forced-air furnace, you’ve already got a rudimentary air-filtration system: That matted-fiberglass filter that should be changed once a month. “You can’t change it often enough,” says This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey. When it clogs with dust, it stops working and overworks the furnace. In fact, those filters are designed to protect your furnace from large particles of dust, and while they might keep surfaces in your house a bit cleaner, they won’t block the microscopic particles that are most irritating to lung tissue. Pleated filters, which pack more material in the same amount of space, cost a few bucks more and do a slightly better job. By far the best pleated filters are electrostatically charged to attract allergens like pollen and pet dander. They cost around $15 and should be changed every two to three months.
AIRDUCT CLEAN has been specializing in residential & business air duct cleaning for many years. We are a company that is focused on safeguarding your home & business against pollutants that are often overlooked and we do so by air duct cleaning, vent disinfecting, dryer vent cleaning, and more.
My ducts were filthy, and now they are clean. The two gentleman at my home were polite and they wore covers over their shoes even though their shoes were clean and dry. They moved quickly and efficiently!

Similarly, dryer vent cleaning service is important for your home or business. The principle is the same. We all know the experience of cleaning out the lint filter in the dryer at home, and most of us know what it’s like when we forget to do so for a few loads. The filter gets really full, and can even be hot to the touch. The dryer isn’t working as efficiently as it should. Well, the filter doesn’t stop everything, and over time this same kind of build-up can happen in your dryer vent. If left unaddressed this can even become a dangerous fire hazard, as dryers produce heat, the build-up can be flammable, and often the venting tube is in an enclosed space.

“will air duct cleaning help allergies air duct cleaning is it necessary”

Knowledge about air duct cleaning is in its early stages, so a blanket recommendation cannot be offered as to whether you should have your air ducts in your home cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urges you to read this document in it entirety as it provides important information on the subject.
With 2 dogs and lots of dirt outside, you can only imagine the build up in those air ducts over the years. We actually are putting in a new furnace so we are hiring a pro to do it…but now I know what to watch for. Great tutorial and congrats on being Hub of the Day! Wow! Voted very UP and useful.
I can’t believe the number of people saying a good properly installed central heating system never needs to be cleaned. Maybe they live in hermetically sealed cells? One look into a cold air return and you can see that it definitely needs periodic cleaning. The air in the house “always” has some dust in it and that’s where it ends up. We just had ours cleaned and I saw what came out of it, disgusting. But always ask if they use the “air whip” to sweep/beat the inside of the metal duct. If not, don’t bother. These folks used a little whip on the end of a pressure hose and swept the entire length of all the ducts. I have lighted bore scope that allowed me to see into the duct after he was done and it was spic and span. But do change your filters often, 2 or 3 times a year.
2. I would bet a considerable amount of money that if I were to inspect 12 year old duct work at Nicolas’s home, it would have a considerable amount of dust, debris and buildup. No furnace has the capability to filter heavy dirt and dust particles, and settles into the return air duct recirculating the same dust over and over.
1.         The vacuum and compressed air equipment are setup outside the home and are properly positioned to allow for the most direct connection to your HVAC system and its ductwork. Large portable HEPA vacuums also can be used and set up closer to the system where appropriate. If needed, drop cloths are laid out to protect the floor where the vacuum hose is brought in. Our technicians wear nitrile gloves to prevent leaving fingerprints and wear booties to protect your rugs and floors. They place plastic sheaths on your wall corners to protect them from the vacuum hose. Because nothing is sucked up from the vents and the process uses negative pressure, you do not need to leave your home or worry about dusting after the service.
Make sure ducts are properly sealed and insulated in all non-air-conditioned spaces (e.g., attics and crawl spaces). This will help to prevent moisture due to condensation from entering the system and is important to make the system work as intended. To prevent water condensation, the heating and cooling system must be properly insulated.
Since the early years, we have encountered consumers who needed to be educated on the importance of air duct cleaning and indoor air quality. Now, we encounter consumers who understand the significance of air quality and are happy to learn more during our process. We also now understand how to enhance the overall effectiveness of the duct cleaning service that we provide with added indoor air quality related services specifically related to HVAC Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration.
My floor register in my room doesn’t allow much air flow. I’ve tried reaching down as far as I could with my long arms but can only get so much. My understanding is all ducks/floor registers are connected for even air flow in our basement. Everyone else’s gets a lot of cold air blowing in theres. How can I get my registers air flow to work better
The average cost to clean ducts & vents is anywhere between $240 and $440. The total cost will depend on how much work the professionals have to do, along with any labor price additions or added equipment. Consult with a HVAC professional to see what you’ll pay and how much you can do yourself.
10.       Once all main trunk ducts are cleaned and visibly inspected, we move on to clean your HVAC air handling unit. We clean the blower area, removing it if it is accessible, and air-wash all the fan blades. If you have air conditioning, we will inspect your evaporator coil, as long as it is accessible and serviceable.  We will determine if the coil needs to be cleaned and present this to you during the job.  Matted coils are a breeding ground for microbes. In addition, if they haven’t been cleaned in some time, you experience up to 20% less efficiency, according to the America Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The condensate pan is also air-washed and drained.
Cleaning your ductwork can damage it.  Secondly, the air duct cleaning procedure consists of sticking vacuum tubes down your ductwork, which can damage and crack the sensitive plastic interior of your ductwork.  It is also important to know that, despite what they might say, most duct cleaning companies are not HVAC contractors!  They actually know very little about the proper operation of your system.
I noticed a lot of negative feedback, though unfortunately there are many dishonest companies out there. I currently work with a company that cleans duct work and we DO NOT use any scare tactics or up sell services or equipment. Once every 10years of course there are exceptions. We clean supply, returns, air handler, housing, motor, and fan. Though be discerning when qualifying anyone to work in your home. I would ask for REAL REFERENCES to contact.

Minor problems with ducts can result in condensation inside the ducts. Insulation failure, a puncture in the duct wall, or a bad connection between components of the duct system can allow moisture to form. Moisture, combined with content in the dust, can result in mold growth.

Moisture can enter the duct system through leaks or if the system has been improperly installed or serviced. Research suggests that condensation (which occurs when a surface temperature is lower than the dew point temperature of the surrounding air) on or near cooling coils of air conditioning units is a major factor in moisture contamination of the system. The presence of condensation or high relative humidity is an important indicator of the potential for mold growth on any type of duct. Controlling moisture can often be difficult, but here are some steps you can take:
As an ex-Industrial Hygienist with OSHA, and current manager of a carpet cleaning company, we use a low moisture process that allows for drying within one hour, minimizing the potential for a great mold or bacteria media.
Someone came and said it would be 8,000 but would do it for 4,000. I got a new unit in a few years ago but it has never have the ducks clean and they were put in around 20 years ago. I have 8 vents and duck is in the attic.
If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.
Our professionals are IICRC trained and certified by the American Drying Institute. We utilize truck-mounted duct cleaning equipment that dislodges dirt and other debris. Then we use a high powered vacuum with sixteen 10-foot bags that take up the entire back end and allow for maximum airflow at all times.

You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should occasionally be cleaned. While the debate about the value of periodic duct cleaning continues, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental, provided that it is done properly.
There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system. There are several important points to understand concerning mold detection in heating and cooling systems:

how effective is duct cleaning when i have skunk odor in my home, and will duct cleaning spew the smell right back into my home. I had my home sprayed by a skunk, or I may have a dead skunk deep inside my home somewhere that we can not get to
Ask potential air duct cleaning companies to provide you with a written checklist of exactly what they will do, and if you hire them, ask them to verify each task as they complete it. Qualified air duct cleaners will follow strict standards set by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association and should be happy to show you their credentials.
Clarence was very professional, very courteous and very helpful. He discussed with my husband some of the other services your company offered and it is very likely we will be using them at another time. Very pleased
A complete indoor air system cleaning includes the air handling units, coils, blowers, fresh air intake duct, supply & return ducts, supply diffusers and return air intake grills. We pressure wash the units, coils & blowers. These components are then rinsed free of all detergent residue. The HVAC fresh air intake duct, along with supply & return ducts are HEPA brush vacuum cleaned to remove all dirt and other visible accumulation. All supply diffusers and return air intake grills are removed, cleaned & replaced. Smaller ducts are accessed from diffuser openings and access openings, which OMI provides when necessary.  OMI has been performing HVAC cleaning in the Chicago area since 1972.
Cleaning ducts and vents generally costs between $263 and $472, but as with many services, the bigger and dirtier the project, the more you’ll need to pay. When a professional comes to assess the needs of your system, they will consider:
All of the products discussed above are registered solely for the purpose of sanitizing the smooth surfaces of unlined (bare) sheet metal ducts. No products are currently registered as biocides for use on fiber glass duct board or fiber glass lined ducts, so it is important to determine if sections of your system contain these materials before permitting the application of any biocide.

A year and a half ago (fall of 2015) we replaced the furnace and air conditioner. From what we could determine this was the third forced air furnace and second air conditioner unit for the house. As part of the installation, we changed out the two 6″ ducts feeding the second floor with 8″ ducts. The idea was to get more cold air to the second floor in the summer. It worked and for the first time the second floor and first floor temperatures were the same when the air conditioner was running. Of course, to make the system work I close down upstairs duct damper doors in the winter and open them up in the summer.

Chemical biocides are regulated by EPA under Federal pesticide law. A product must be registered by EPA for a specific use before it can be legally used for that purpose. The specific use(s) must appear on the pesticide (e.g., biocide) label, along with other important information. It is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide product in any manner inconsistent with the label directions.
The compressor and its motor sit inside the coil (Fig. A). They’re usually sealed and won’t need maintenance. However, if you have an older compressor that’s belt-driven by a separate motor, lubricate the motor through its oil ports. In every case, keep an eye out for dark drip marks on the bottom of the compressor case or pad (Photo 5). This indicates an oil leak; the compressor or tubes might be leaking coolant (refrigerant) as well. If you find a leak, call in a pro to check the problem. Don’t tighten joints to try to stop leaks yourself! Over-tightening can make the problem worse. And only a pro with proper equipment can recharge the system to the proper level of coolant.
Excessive Dust: Excess dust and debris built up in the ductwork could cause your home to become dustier. Ask your contractor to use a camera to check inside the ductwork for this problem and show you the evidence before they begin to clean.
I called a company name “GREEN RHVAC” with their $29.00 one system air duck cleaning. When the guy came with a truck I asked him to tell me how much he will charge and he said that if he gave me price and I didn’t want the service then he would charge me $89 or he would tell me how much he charge me after he finished the work. I immoderately sense that I made mistake to call him to my house. To cut my lost I asked him to give me the price and it was $1600 for two systems house. I paid $100 to him for my lesson to learn and search online to find this site is very helpfully and I should do it before to call anyone for air duck cleaning.
My best advice has always been that a proper duct cleaning is a valuable investment when moving into a home (new or old), after major renovations and if the ducts have never been cleaned before. It is unlikely that there will be increased air flow, as finding major blockage is unusual, but this will eliminate this as a possible concern if there are air flow concerns. It is also true that the “dust” that is cleared out will most likely never have been distributed through the house unless there has been some work done on the ducts. What is cleared out will be pet hair, toys, clothes, construction material, and biological material (small carcasses and/or feces). Once a proper cleaning is done a follow-up is rarely necessary, but up to the home owners discression.
I guess I should present my credentials first, I am a 30 year veteran of the heating and cooling industry. I started at the bottom and have participated in every area of the trade. Installer, service, maint. Ownership, rep, territory manager and so on. A forced air duct system is a large vacume. Like your vacume it has an air intake (return air) and an exhaust (supply registers). A filter just like a vacume (located next to furnace or air handler). Now I want you to visualize something. Put your head inside your vacume cleaner and breath. Get the picture? This is what your duct work looks like. Do you clean your vacume when it’s dirty? If it’s full and the filter is dirty you lose performance and it starts poluting the air you breathe. It’s common sense. I recommend hiring a duct cleaning outfit that you have researched to be honest, background checked, drug tested, insured, and highly recommended by your piers in the area. The service is a necessity, but like everything, it should be done by a qualified company.
Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing (See diagram).
If you have allergies or asthma, you probably don’t need any allergens or contaminants entering your breathing space! With our truck, the debris that the vacuum pulls out of your air ducts falls into a trap outside , while the air is released into huge filter bags on top of the vacuum truck … outside!
Homeowners are already asking for indoor air quality and energy saving solutions, and the demand is increasing as we speak. Our customers know that if they don’t offer these solutions, their competitors will. Our packages help you add these services, and the revenue they generate without adding the overhead of extra techs.
If the service provider charges by the hour, request an estimate of the number of hours or days the job will take, and find out whether there will be interruptions in the work. Make sure the duct cleaner you choose will provide a written agreement outlining the total cost and scope of the job before work begins.
Well the idea is to create even airflow but quiet honestly, it’s not often achieved. Not even in my home. You can have a company come and balance the system but they may find it has something to do with the design or have to add a booster fan or some sort of control system to make it fully balanced. It is something that could cost $100 or $1000. Thanks for reading and commenting.
If you have your heart set on the peace of mind in having your air conditioning ducts cleaned, then that is fine.  I’d start though by taking the preventative measures listed above in order to ensure that your problem doesn’t return after they’ve been cleaned.  Then, I’d make the following recommendations:
Yes, ducts can look terribly dusty. However, that dust will not become aerosolized during the normal operation of your furnace. There is an easy way to test this. Rent a particle counter and test the air flowing out of your registers before and after cleaning. You will not see any improvement in the air quality or any reduction in the airborne dust level. Think of it this way. Duct cleaning companies tell you that you need to clean your ducts when you can see a layer of dust in your ducts. Yet that very layer of dust is proof that duct cleaning is unnecessary, because that dust proves that the air in your furnace is not fast enough to re-aerosolize the dust.
You usually don’t have easy access to the evaporator coil that’s inside the plenum or a main duct near the furnace (Fig. A). If you can get to it, vacuum the bottom side of its fins with a soft brush attachment.
Becuase my 1968 Buick was a real heavy duty mildew problem, I needed to go to an extreme odor remover like the Distilled White Vinegar. But the Interior fogger worked great in my daily driver… For this I will give this set of two odor cleaners 5-Stars. Just know your application and set your expectations accordingly for the interior fogger.

What about ringworm? If the fungus is as contagious as doctors warn, and the spores can live several months, doesn’t it make sense to spray some sort of fungus killer into the HVAC system to kill the spores that it has sucked in from the air? Duct cleaning would not helpful at all here; these spores are microscopic and it could actually spread them further. But given how severely contagious ringworm is, body and especially scalp, does anyone make an aerosol product that will clean the system and kill the fungus? One the resident can use, not call an HVAC company; you can’t do that when you are in an apartment. I hear it’s not the same as mold, it is much more difficult. Truth?
Air duct cleaning is a highly attractive service to offer because of the low startup cost and the high rate of return. Air duct cleaning, for most homes, costs between $450 and $1000, factoring in different aspect such as home size and number and configuration of air ducts.
Many customers who contact our air duct cleaning specialists often start the conversation with this question and it can be a hard one to answer. Conditions in every building vary and depending on several factors, it may be time to have your residential, commercial, or industrial space inspected and cleaned. Some of these factors can include:
Air duct cleaning is one of the fastest growing segments of the home services industry. Now, more than ever, indoor air quality is on the minds of your customers. Adding air duct cleaning to your services to your company’s services can have significant benefits.

NADCA experts argue the need for cleaning depends on a variety of factors, including pets, smoking, recent renovations, local weather conditions and overall home cleanliness. Vinick says a good contractor will offer to do an inspection beforehand for a nominal charge, if any, to see if a cleaning is necessary.
Locate the filter enclosure on the indoor furnace/AC where the large fresh air return duct enters the unit. You may need a screwdriver to turn the latch to open the door to the filter enclosure. Remove the old filter and install the new filter, matching the air-flow direction arrows on the filter to the arrows on the unit. Close and latch the door.
I had my ducts somewhat cleaned December 22, 2014. The hose of the machine the technitian used did not fit in some of my vents, therefore, he did not clean them. But I still paid $428.00 for the service. I will be calling the company on Monday, and kindly ask them to come back and clean the ducts they did not as they did not fullfill their part of the service.
. Here at AirsoPure we charge 350.00  per furnace and 250 if you have a secondary unit. Please give us a call today if you are still in need of this service 888 723 8287. I hope this helped and please contact us in the future. Happy Holidays
Fig. A shows a typical central air conditioning/furnace setup. Two copper tubes connect the outdoor compressor and its condenser coil (a “coil” is a combination of fins and tubes) to the indoor evaporator coil that’s located in the plenum (Fig. A) above the furnace blower. One tube is covered with foam insulation. If you have a heat pump, both tubes will be insulated.
I had a company come and clean my air ducts (10 registers- 4 intakes with 2 trunk lines). I was okay with the price of $400. Then, they said I needed to have the ducts sanitized and disinfected and was charged another $360. I was told this process was $18 per duct. That’s 14 ducts multiplied by the $18 which was another $252. When I went to pay however – they said there were more ducts and when I protested he cut me off and was very adamant about the payment. I know I should have tried harder but felt intimidated. I’m confused – was $260 a fair amount?
I am a small business owner in south Al..that spends a ton of money on continuing ed…..and I still don’t know it all. Patco ac service.I hope this small bit of info will help someone out there make a decision on what direction on which way they choose to go.
Check Standards: The NADCA provides guidelines for professionals and customers on safe duct cleaning. If your ducts are insulated, the professional should also follow the guidelines of the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA).
“They did duct cleaning for me. I liked the customer service and the people that came out. I have noticed a difference in the air quality since the work’s been done. They’re good. They get an A from me.”
NADCA Certified – Hiring Mr. Duct provides consumers with an added level of security, since NADCA members possess general liability insurance, staff that is trained and certified (ASCS) Air Systems Cleaning Specialists.
Bought Amazon Groupon deal for $29. Guy walks in and estimated $900 for all air duct and dryer vent. Then comes down to $600 with free dryer vent. I refuse, he calls office and deal is now $250. I still dont want and his final deal is Ducts and all returns for $100. However, no Brush cleaning, no tapes on vents, no HVAC blower clean up.

On average, we (Indians in Ontario) receive 3-5 calls per day for duct cleaning services from India. I did get ducts cleaned twice in 25 years. For a newly built house, it should be done as material goes into the ducts. Every year, before turning the heat on, I clean the ducts, using the vacuum pipe or with wet towel. Most of the dust, pet hair, small items get to the ducts from the top floors, not where system is installed. Even in winter months, I open 2-3 windows for air circulation for 15 minutes, specially right after cooking, almost daily. We breath in the same stale air, develop health issues. Also, I have an added air cleaning and fileration system installed. At a low rate, this system constantly cleans the inside air and also that it pulls from the outside. Duct cleaning is a scam, there are other efficient and cost effective methods we can use to purify the inside air.
Mila – Not all ducts can feasibly be reached and vertical ducts in the wall are not usually the main culprit in holding dust. This article is about doing a pretty darn good job on your own but not necessarily to get to every nook and cranny. Thank you for reading!

“vent and air duct cleaning _air duct cleaning deals”

Yes everyone should get all their ductwork cleaned, because it does help, incame down with major allergies and had serval operations on my sinues because of this problem of air quality and dust, plus i almost died from one of the operations, i was suffering so much. Yes you can seal your duct system by buyind duct seal t instead of tape to tape all the corners of the vent system, tape wears out and gets brittle, the sealant you can buy at home depot, and you just brush it all over the connections of your ductwork, it comes in a container and it is like a thick paste and dries making a good seal for your ductwork.
Our technician was extremely kind and courteous. He explained the procedure very well and cleaned up well after he was done with his work. The furnace and air ducts looked significantly better than before and there was a noticeable difference in the performance of our HVAC system.
If they have a website or not means absolutely zero. Check the BBB or search for company reviews on the internet. The internet is great for word of mouth and can save you a lot of time. Just make sure that the sources of information are credible ones and not competitors because the internet also breeds contempt.
Unless you have mold or some sudden illness you think might be related to the ducts, better leave well enough alone. I regret using a coupon for a $69 heating service “tune up”. The only substantial thing I noticed is them replacing the furnace filter with one of MY filters next to the furnace, and I had replace it less than a month prior.
Well, I had the cleaning done. The handler is definitely much quieter. It was explained to me that with the coils clean, the condensation will be able to sweat off instead of sticking to the dust and dirt, therefore the humidity (lots of humidity in florida) will be removed better. I feel as if it was worth it, but, I will definitely change that filter every 3 weeks or so from now on. I don’t want to pay that cost again.
I agree that good filtration and a sealed system will prevent the need for duct cleaning. However, when we do get called it is because the duct work has reached a noticeable state of restriction or dust or the homeowner is hyper-sensitive to these pollutants in their home. Most of the time we find that no filter or a cheap (99 cent) filter is being used or they have serious duct leaks in the system. If you are hiring a cleaner make sure they are using professional cleaning equipment which will consist of a rotating brush system and a vacuum source. Be highly skeptical of the contractor with no branded system or the guy who shows up with just chimney brushes and a shop vac. He will not be able to reach around all the corners or all the runs in your system and he will be taking your money for a superficial cleaning at best. Only trust a company that offers VIDEO inspection and more importantly…. a who repairs, installs and seals ducts if a problem is discovered or heaven forbid, created. Good luck and get your ducts sealed if you do have a leak! It is one of the greatest energy losses to a home other than being poorly insulated.
has been dedicated to helping consumers get the real scoop on local service companies and health providers since 1995. Inspired by the frustrations her co-founder had trying to find reliable contractors in suburban Columbus, Ohio, she started Angie’s List to help homeowners find who they should hire and who they should avoid.
Certifications: The cleaning company should be certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which sets standards for HVAC system cleaning. The EPA does not certify duct cleaners, so avoid anyone making that claim. Check for relevant licenses and insurance – some states require a license for duct cleaning while others don’t.
HVAC contractors have started using air duct cleaning as a way to close more equipment replacement jobs. Add air duct cleaning as an added value to any equipment replacement package and you will increase your chances of closing the deal.
NADCA Certified Duct Cleaners: The National Air Duct Cleaners Association is an organization of air duct cleaning companies that are dedicated to higher standards of quality and ethical practices in their business. Four Seasons goes the extra mile to meet or exceed the standards set forth by NADCA, and we only hire NADCA certified Duct Cleaning Specialists.
I just had my Air ducts “cleaned”. The person who came to my house works for an air duct cleaning company who uses a professional vacuum. He said the company would charge me about $900 but he can do it aside on his own and charge me half of that. However, when he came over the house, he brought the rotary brush along with his domestic vacuum cleaner that it’s hose was about 5 feet long, I ask him that the wasnt strong enough to pull dust out, and he said, it’s similar to what companies use. I was in doubt and he didnt cover the vents so im thinking all dust must have come out from every air vents. Could this vacuum have taking the debris out of the air ducts? Or how can I myself find out if the inside of the air ducts have been cleaned and no debris is sitting there? I have dust all over my house.

“what is the process for air duct cleaning -air duct cleaning system”

Excellent Job by Mr. Duct: Furnace Cleaning. Very easy to set up an appointment. They were right on time. The technician, Brain was very polite and professional. Job well done and very cooperative. I highly recommend Mr. Duct. They followed up on the service the next day, which was great. Over all excellent service.
Cleaning your air conditioning ducts sounds like a good idea, but to be perfectly honest it is mostly marketing and hype, in my not-so-humble opinion.  I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a scam, per se, but I would tell you to be careful with your money when you start asking yourself, “should I have my air ducts cleaned?”  If you follow proper preventative HVAC maintenance practices, then you really shouldn’t have to have your AC ducts cleaned, and if you do decide to do it, then it should only be a one-time thing.  If you do decide to go through with it, thats okay, but I’d recommend you follow the tips above and try not to buy into the hype too much.  For more information on other related air conditioning topics, visit the ASM Air Conditioning Blog.  If you live in Santa Clarita and the Southern California area, give us a call and we’d be happy to help you: Contact All Systems Mechanical.
The most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is to employ Source Removal methods of cleaning. This requires a contractor to place the system under negative pressure, through the use of a specialized, powerful vacuum. While the vacuum draws air through the system, devices are inserted into the ducts to dislodge any debris that might be stuck to interior surfaces. The debris can then travel down the ducts to the vacuum, which removes it from the system and the home.
Not only can getting your air ducts cleaned out make a difference in the air quality, but installing UV Lights can benefit you so much more. People readily accept that UV lights are useful in the medical field, food industries and even in water purification systems, but what many do not know, is the effectiveness that UV lights can have in your HVAC system. Having UV lights installed can reduce bacteria and even mold. With two primary UV light installations, the bacteria and mold won’t stand a chance. This is highly beneficial to those with respiratory issues and severe allergy complications. Coil Sterilization utilizes the UV lights in the return air duct that sterilizes the air handler coil. The second installation method is the Air Sterilization which uses the UV lights as a unit to sterilize the air as it flows through the ducts. Installed in the return air duct, the UV lights sterilize the air which then cycles through air handler blower.
The duct cleaning was great. I also ordered hookups of my washer and dryer with A1 in Beaverton, OR which was to include bringing new supply lines and a drain hose for the washer. After verifying twice this would be done with A1 on their direct office line, they called the day of the install to say they didn’t do hoses and didn’t have them. So, I don’t have a working laundry in my house until I get the hoses myself. Why did they say they could do it? What a let down.
The average cost of keeping your residential ductwork orderly is going to vary greatly from that of a commercial building. This is because commercial air ducts are often larger and more extensive. Residential cleanings can cost an average of about $20-$30 per vent. For commercial buildings, service providers must do an estimate of your space before they can provide an accurate quote. Before factoring in the materials and the number A/C and furnace units, you can expect a commercial project to cost at least $35-$50 per hour.
Vinick says he’s encountered much anecdotal evidence of the benefits of air duct cleaning. “You could ask the tens of thousands of customers that I’ve had in 26 years about their improved energy consumption and healthy home environment,” he says.
This just tell us that we need to clean our air vent every once in a while. To prevent the worsening of an existing allergy. People non-sensitive will also benefit from this because they will not develop allergens from an air vent producing a clean and fresh air. Thank you for sharing.
I replaced all the ducts but the trunks in my 1969 home when I replaced the horizontal furnace under the house with a gas pack. I got advice from a friend who was an HVAC contractor. I was surprised to find the trunks and other ducts very clean. I replaced the individual runs with flex primarily for the insulation. I wrapped the trunks with insulation also.
Many customers who contact our air duct cleaning specialists often start the conversation with this question and it can be a hard one to answer. Conditions in every building vary and depending on several factors, it may be time to have your residential, commercial, or industrial space inspected and cleaned. Some of these factors can include:

I recently had my air ducts cleaned after never having done it since I’ve lived in my home for 20 years. Mine and my children’s level of discomfort due to dust and allergens seems to have decreased significantly since we used Aircare Services in southern MA.
While there are reputable, professional HVAC cleaning services out there, there are scams as well. Anytime scare tactics can be used to make the claim that your home might be “unhealthy,” homeowners run the risk of being frightened into emptying their checkbooks.

I have wondered if it was okay to tackle cleaning ducts yourself. I had them done professionally years ago, in a different house, and it was quite a job – but they had a rotor rooter sort of thing that went all through the duct work.
The air ducts in your home are a vital component of your HVAC system. They provide the route for circulating air to reach all areas of the home, and as air passes through this system, it deposits large amounts of dust, dirt, pollen, mold, bacteria, viruses, and many other irritants within the ducts. Over the years, this debris can buildup and begin to negatively impact the home’s indoor air quality with every cycle of the furnace and air conditioner. This is the point where your ducts could use a professional air duct cleaning from Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning, and Plumbing.
Probably you don’t own a high-powered, truck-mounted vacuum system with 150 foot-hoses; perhaps you can’t afford the cost of such service. But I am going to tell you how you can clean air ducts yourself. Sure, you won’t be able to reach every nook and cranny, but you can still eliminate roughly 85% of the dust in your system without spending any more than the cost of your new furnace filter.
Costs of cleaning ducts and vents in Dallas average $371, which is about $36 more than the national average. Homeowners spend anywhere from $120 to $830, depending on the size and scope of the system. Residents who only need their dryer vents cleaned can expect to pay around $119.
I’d have to disagree with all of your statements. Not only are they derived from no experience in the field, you are missing keys facts. Ducts even if air tight will get dirty. If they are not getting dirty, it means they are not working. Your returns side of the duct work is always under negative pressure when the system is operational. Therefore it is always drawing air in. Seeing how dust is made up mostly from dead skin humans shed daily. Around 1.6 Pounds of skin a year per human. Living in your home anything that is air born will be drawn back towards the cold air returns. That is what they are designed for, to draw stale air back to the system to be filtered and sent back through the house.Homes with carpet will actually have cleaner duct work than home with all tile or hardwood. This is because carpets hold onto dust particles and you vacuum them up. Whereas on hardwood or tile, dust can run freely back to the returns. Even if a duct system was sealed 100%, which is next to impossible to achieve 100% would still need to be cleaned. The cleaning may only have to be every 7-10 years for example. Most homes require every 5-7 years. And that’s if it was done properly the first time. If you constantly hire people that have no or minimal knowledge of duct cleaning, You home would require cleaning more often. Every 2 years. That’s a trade secret, The longer they recommend before the next cleaning, the odds are they did it right. That’s not to say there aren’t people that lie, because there are. Just have your duct cleaner take pictures before and after cleaning. Not just an outside view. Get in there, picture entire joist liners, Whole main runs and even long round pipes. Also it helps to have a company that guarantees their work. If it’s not done right, they will come back and do it until it is. Most companies that do this make sure it is right the first time. Your not getting paid to do the job twice.
Good article, but it fails to point out that leaky return-side ducts could be drawing dust and allergens into the duct system from the enclosed spaces in which they run, e.g. between walls, below floors, attic. So duct cleaning may only be a temporary solution. The homeowner can get a home energy audit — free in many states — to determine if they have significant duct leakage. An Aeroseal dealer may be able to effectively seal up the duct system without needing to tear into walls etc to get to the ducts.
Furnace, Duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning. The crew was excellent, arrived on time, took their time. Explained everything they were doing. I will definitely use them again. And Recommend them to Friends.
We utilize DuctLink — a software that customizes estimates in order to assign exact materials to projects and prevent incorrect boilerplate verbiage — to ensure all work estimates meet NADCA ACR Standards.
Its portfolio takes a hit also. The build-up of debris and grime that keep air from flowing through the ventilation system. That means working harder and higher priced to keep. Over time, the issue is getting worse. Clean clean the atmosphere outlet NADCA accredited Dallas air duct and air in your house with cleaning air ducts.
If you are replacing your air conditioning system, make sure that the unit is the proper size for your needs and that all ducts are sealed at the joints. A unit that is too big will cycle on and off frequently, resulting in poor moisture removal, particularly in areas with high humidity. Also make sure that your new system is designed to manage condensation effectively.
BTW I tell my customers up front that we do not clean anything on the furnace itself and recommend they have their HVAC people come in for that portion. In reading your disingenuous comments I am hoping that I have never sent one of my valued customers to any of you.
The air duct cleaning exceeded all of our expectations – the cleaners were polite and really wanted to make sure we understood their NADCA process. It was a bit complicated took them a few hours to complete, but the price was quoted and our vents were totally clean!

“air duct cleaning companies is air duct cleaning worth it”

Cleaning should include: cleaning all of registers, inside the ductwork, the interior of the heating/ventilating system, the furnace fan, and the coils for an air conditioner or heat pump, according to Real-Estate-Agents.com[2] . Once the system is clean, a disinfectant can be sprayed throughout to kill any mold, bacteria or dust mites that remain.
As a person with severe mold allergies, I live in a the South where the climate naturally breeds molds. We noticed a difference when we had our ducts cleaned. The company used a vacumn type system and covered all of our vents with plastic that was held up by the suction. We had no damage, no leaking dust/dirt back into the house and it took several hours. I think if you use a reputable company it makes the world of difference. Now we use better air filters and also have a UV light to prevent mold growth on ours system. We ‘d do it again when the time comes. From your car’s air filter to your dryer…anything works more efficiently when it is not filthy dirty. That’s just common sense.
The areas you could not reach with the steps above are not likely to contain a lot of dust and dirt. However, if you are determined to clean every place you can, there are a couple more things you can do.
I own an HVAC company. Dirt in your ducts stays there and hurts no one. It is like dirt on the ground outside. This industry was infiltrated by a bunch of money grubbing low lifes years ago. As a credible company, we do not clean air ducts. Some who were credible probably signed on not knowing what else to do or to try to make a buck another way. These companies, because they also do HVAC work not only rip off private homeowners, they are ripping off legitimate HVAC company’s customers and the integrity of what can and should as a rule be a great service industry. Some probably have gotten into this to simply offer what competitors who were ripping off their customers were offering. Anyone cleaning ducts is in my opinion raising a big red flag that they cannot and should not be trusted. Political pressure from NADCA, advertising dollars, manufacturers and marketers of duct cleaning equipment, and intense competition for the customers is the only reason the government and adverstising companies have not run them out of business and that this cancer perpetuates itself.
Often imitated but never duplicated, Armstrong uses a strict 14 step process to assure your air ducts are cleaned properly and thoroughly.  No gimmicks, scams or bait and switches here.  A full breakdown of our 14 step process is explained below.
2. Turn on fan. You want the fan running while you are cleaning, to move the dust along that you are going to loosen with your banging and brushing. Set the thermostat to “fan on,” and shut off the “heat/cool” mode so that only the fan is running. If you don’t have a fan-only option, you can run the heat, or you might take this opportunity to install a newer thermostat with this helpful option.
While vacuuming and dusting may be a part of your weekly cleaning routine, these basic methods invariably leave dust and dirt behind, and no amount of regular cleaning can capture every dust mite your home produces. As such, much of that dust and dirt ends up in your air ducts. What’s worse is that this same dust continues to recirculate over and over again, with the dust continuing to accumulate inside your ducts even while it’s redistributed throughout your home.

Permit the application of biocides in your ducts only if necessary to control mold growth and only after assuring yourself that the product will be applied strictly according to label directions. As a precaution, you and your pets should leave the premises during application.
Air Duct Cleaning is one of the healthiest HVAC maintenance decisions you can make. Overtime, the walls of your furnace and air conditioning system become laden with particles of dust, allergens, and other debris. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions others significantly decrease the efficiency of your heating or cooling system.

A good air filter, replaced frequently, as well as a sealed system make duct cleaning a waste of time and money. I take the access plate off the furnace plenum and inspect the A-coil frequently. It is squeaky clean, invariably. Why? The air filter grabs 99% of the dust and airborne particles, hair, etc., before it reaches the coil.

NADCA consulted on the EPA pamphlet and agrees with all but one of its findings, according to NADCA president Michael Vinick. He says NADCA recommends homeowners clean their ducts once every three to five years. “If you have allergies or asthma, you should consider having it done almost annually,” he says.
If you find yourself nodding to two or even three of these points, then it is likely that you will need an HVAC system inspection and cleaning. The benefits of air duct cleaning are numerous: dust reduction and improved circulation, increased efficiency of your HVAC system, and reduced allergen levels within the home. Our technicians utilize the Viper Whip Method and other commercial grade equipment to clean your air duct vents. We contaminants out of the vents and your home, guaranteeing a holistic cleaning that most other duct cleaners cannot provide.

In addition, the black dust was found in most of the heat registers. He could rub it off on his fingers but did nothing but spray compressed air on it which didn’t make it disappear since it wasn’t loose. Also, in the register in the basement he described the black dust as being oily. The reality of that situation is that I had the AC on until the morning of the service and minutes after he snaked the hoses in my back door it started raining. The basement register had condensation from the humidity all over it. It was not oily but wet. He asked for an old towel and wiped it out. Never saw anything so black – because I never had to clean soot. That is what I have in my ducts. Soot from years of the old coal furnace.
I always recommend Matt at Rainbow. I’ve received multiple compliments from my insured’s letting me know what a great job they have done, and how quickly they were able to get the job done. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a fast, honest, & reliable restoration contractor.
Consumers can select a particle removal air filter by looking at its efficiency in removing airborne particles from the air stream that passes through it. This efficiency is measured by the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) for air filters installed in the ductwork of HVAC systems. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, or ASHRAE developed this measurement method. MERV ratings (ranging from a low of 1 to a high of 20) also allow comparison of air filters made by different companies.
Two types of air cleaning devices can remove particles from the air — mechanical air filters and electronic air cleaners. Mechanical air filters remove particles by capturing them on filter materials.
Anyone who works on HVAC systems needs to be licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. According to the EPA, Texas is one of the handful of states that require air duct cleaners to hold a special license.
I used Mr. Duct for the first time to clean a dryer vent that had not been working properly even after I had other companies/individuals take a look at it. Mr. Duct arrived on time, were very professional, organized, and knew exactly what to do. The vent now works perfectly. I will certainly use more of the Mr. Duct services.
Medium efficiency filters with a MERV of 5 to 13 are reasonably efficient at removing small to large airborne particles. Filters with a MERV between 7 and 13 are likely to be nearly as effective as true HEPA filters at controlling most airborne indoor particles. Medium efficiency air filters are generally less expensive than HEPA filters, and allow quieter HVAC fan operation and higher airflow rates than HEPA filters since they have less airflow resistance.

“top quality air duct cleaning -why air duct cleaning”

Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparison due to the fact that there is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. However there will be some albeit a lot less in any event.

The most appealing argument that can be made is that cleaning your central air conditioning ductwork gives you peace of mind.  Think about it, you have no idea what is hidden in the depths of your AC ducts so it can be comforting to know that a professional has inspected them and taken a good look inside.  If you do decide to take this route, take some time to research your local contractors and only choose a reputable duct cleaner.  For more tips on how to choose an HVAC contractor, take a look at: How to Choose a Contractor: 5 HVAC Tips You Must Know.  Here are some possible advantages to having your AC ducts cleaned:
if your issue is mold, again correct maintanance of your filter will solve 95% of your problems. Those sensitive to allergies would be wiser finding out what is causing there allergies and addressing that problem than wasting hundreds on an air duct cleaning job.
As a by-product of the ionization process, these types of units may produce trace amounts of ozone, a lung irritant. (Ion air filters should not be confused with ozone generators, a different type of air filter that relies on ozone to clean the air and is not recommended by the EPA or the American Lung Association.) Ion filters are considered safe if they release less than 50 parts per billion of ozone, the government’s threshold. But even smaller amounts could bother people with asthma or other breathing disorders. If you’re considering a whole-house or portable electronic filter, check the product specifications to make sure it does not exceed safe levels for ozone emission.
Bill – The metal shouldn’t hold the smell and you probably won’t be able to clean it all unless you disconnect it so for the time and effort, I’d replace the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean them.
The benefits of air duct cleaning run the gamut from health-related to financial. Your furnace and ductwork serve as your home’s respiratory system, pulling air from inside your home through the return ducts, where the air moves through the air filter into the furnace to be heated before passing through the supply ducts and back into your living space. Dust, pet dander, debris, pathogens, allergens, chemicals, dust mites—all of these contaminants become trapped inside your air ducts over time, and as the air moves through the system, it passes through these dirty ducts, redistributing the dirt throughout your home or simply depositing it in the ducts where it builds up over time. Air duct cleaning can dramatically reduce the number of contaminants present in your home’s indoor air.
The EPA says that indoor air is often many times more polluted outdoor air. Many of these contaminants get stuck or even grow in the ductwork, possibly getting re-circulated into the air you breathe. According to the EPA, “Contaminated central air handling systems can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew and other sources of biological contaminants and can then distribute these contaminants through the home.”
When servicing air conditioners, we are sometimes asked, how often should you clean your air ducts?  Those of you who have read our articles, know that we are a small, U.S. Veteran-Owned HVAC company and pride ourselves on giving people honest, straight answers.  Cleaning air ducts is a hot topic in recent times because people are concerned for their health, and indoor air quality is an important part of that.  To be perfectly honest though, the real question you need to be asking is, should I have my air ducts cleaned at all?  The answer to this depends on who you ask and there is an entire industry that has popped-up (almost overnight) that is based on air duct cleaning and indoor air quality.  I will tell you that All Systems Mechanical HVAC does not offer residential air duct cleaning for a couple of very important reasons: the most noteworthy of which is that, in our experience, if your air ducts actually need a cleaning, then something bigger has already gone wrong with your system; secondly, cleaning your air ducts isn’t all that effective and can damage them.  So, is AC duct cleaning necessary?  The short answer is no, but to answer this question more in-depth, this article will discuss what air duct cleaning is, the pros and cons of having your air ducts cleaned, whether or not you should spend the money, and if not, what you should be doing instead.

At $39 will admit (after asking them several times) that they typically use an electric-powered shop vacuum to clean your ducts. You might wonder how a shop vacuum can remove possibly several pounds of grime?
Most of our air ducts are up in the ceiling except for the return air ducts. At least we can use your suggestions to clean those. Never even thought about it except for changing out the filters. Congratulations on your HOFD award.
Armstrong is serious when it comes to knowledge and training.  That’s why all of our technicians attend weekly training sessions and acquire certificaitions from NADCA (The National Air Duct Cleaners Association).
EPA does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned except on an as-needed basis because of the continuing uncertainty about the benefits of duct cleaning under most circumstances. EPA does, however, recommend that if you have a fuel burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, they be inspected for proper functioning and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning. Some research also suggests that cleaning dirty cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers can improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems. However, little evidence exists to indicate that simply cleaning the duct system will increase your system’s efficiency.
The technician that replaced my blower module said I could definitely benefit from a professional cleaning of the handler and the ductwork, which makes sense. They are going to charge about 500 dollars and bring a crew of people out.
Every time you replace your air conditioner, I would also consider replacing your ductwork as well.  Ductwork has insulation and other components that deteriorate over time and should be replaced regularly just like your HVAC system.  Furthermore, the joint seals between duct segments will also deteriorate over time so keep this in mind.
Check Standards: The NADCA provides guidelines for professionals and customers on safe duct cleaning. If your ducts are insulated, the professional should also follow the guidelines of the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA).
I have been a plumbing/gas/hvac tech for 19 years, before that I installed ductwork in commercial buildings and office towers. As the article states, unless you have undergone some type of extensive reno, or ducts have become contaminated, paying for cleaning is pointless. Its one thing if you have a 30 year old home that has never had a duct cleaning and you can actually see mounds of dust built up , especially in the return side, then go for it. Keep in mind that most duct cleaning companies will only get 80% of the dust , or less at best. Keep in mind that most of the dust in your home is lint from clothes and linens, and skin cells from you and your pets and is constantly being generated. Dust that builds up in ductwork , generally stays in the ductwork. The power of suggestion, scare tactics, up sell!!!
Many of the portable air cleaners tested by AHAM have moderate to large CADR ratings for small particles. However, for typical room sizes, most portable air cleaners currently on the market do not have high enough CADR values to effectively remove large particles such as pollen, dust mite and cockroach allergens.
Routine, professional duct cleaning can reduce exposure to allergens, pollutants, and even airborne illness. As an added bonus, regular cleanings will also improve HVAC efficiency, reducing your energy bill.
Under Federal pesticide law, manufacturers of ozone generators must list an EPA establishment number on the packaging. This number merely identifies the facility that manufactured the product. Display of this number implies neither EPA endorsement nor that EPA has found the product to be safe or effective.
However, if you do have leaky ducts, with gaps that allow for significant amount of insulation and dust from attic/wall space to enter the ducting, it should be fixed to reduce the dust entering the home. This is not the same as duct cleaning, this is duct sealing and envelope sealing.

We were surprised that our $99.00 air duct cleaning turned into a $350 ADDITIONAL cleaning of our system. While we understood the reasoning behind the cleaning, we do not understand why it cost so much since we watched them spray an aerosol chemical that was supposed to “melt” the dirt. We would likely look for a cheaper alternative next time, however the guys that came seemed to have done a good job.
