“air duct cleaning and repair -dirty ducts air duct cleaning”

Cleaning your ductwork isn’t necessary if you use AC filters.  In fact, my problem with professional duct cleaning that it is kind of a made-up industry, and I would instead argue that if you maintain proper air conditioning maintenance and sanitation, then it is completely unnecessary.  If your ducts have mold in them or so much dust that they need to be cleaned, then there is likely a larger problem that needs to addressed.
All these pro duct cleaners answer with “it’s common sense, everything operates better when cleaner” etc. But your explanation is correct. Especially so with flex tube ducting where dust gets “stuck” between the lowest valleys (between wire coil supports) where air flow is drastically reduced — which is more than 50 pct of the entire interior surface area of the flex ducting. That sounds like a bad thing but also has a good effect of trapping dust from escaping.
There is a lot of good, general information in the article. As with anything, the homeowner should do their due diligence in getting enough information to make an educated decision. Should duct-work be cleaned? YES! Does it need to be cleaned annually or even every second or third year? Not necessarily. It all depends on a bunch of variables. You’re right that a well designed and balanced system will deliver the right amount of air flow, but sometimes conditions outside the home/business, make it a necessity to get the ducts cleaned. As for mold? NO filter is going to address a mold issue. If you have mold, you have a moisture issue that needs to be addressed. Also, in my 38 years of experience in the HVAC and sheet metal industries, washable filters are one of the reasons ducts need to be cleaned. They are no where near efficient in cleaning/filtering the air to the level that they should.
We bought an older mobile home over a year ago. I bought a wet dry vac and it didn’t have enough suction power to vacuum the floor duct. The return air is disconnected. I run window a.c. units and have just floor heat. There are blockages in the duct. So, is a shop vac better than wet/dry vac? I need heat desperately before winter arrives.
Compared to using a duster or changing out air filters, professional duct cleaning means going through all the many elements of the HVAC system. This includes, but is not limited to, the supply and return air ducts, grilles, diffusers, exchangers, heating & cooling coils, drip pans, fans and the air handling unit. Keeping these maintained means avoid problems like pollen, mold or overt dust buildup. This is definitely a problem you want to avoid.
Hi, my home office a/c vent has been blowing out blackish granular particles. It only happens with this particular vent. I’ve read lighting candles tend to do something like this… I do light candles every day. Can someone help me with what I should do? Thanks.
2. If air quality is so important and duct cleaniliness is so uncertain, why not adopt doubling filtering; that is, in addition to the existing main furnace filter, add a filter at each air outlet. I understand replacing so many filters would be a burden, but air outlets can be designed for easy filter replacement. The builders and home design engineers should bear responsibility to provide good and low maintenance homes, rather than prioritizing on fancy or costly featuers for homes.
Duct cleaning, when done properly, can reduce your family and pet’s exposure to indoor air pollutants, allergens, and airborne illness, as well as lower your energy bill through increased HVAC efficiency.
The blower fan and evaporation coil are cleaned in place. Even a thin layer of dust here can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. Also, the continual presence of moisture during the cooling season can lead to mold growth on the evaporation coils.
Mr. Duct can offer you a wide variety of thermostats to fit your heating and cooling needs. Our thermostats provide our clientele the ability to manage more than just the temperature of their home. Make sure you browse all of our programmable and non-programmable thermostats to see which one will all of the possibilities of your HVAC system’s performance.
Let’s face it: all air duct would be most efficiently cleaned by simply crawling inside the ducts and hand hand vacuuming with a brush. But since that is not practical in most applications, the Rotobrush cleaning process was developed. It is the onlyself-contained method that brushes and vacuums the debris at the same time, similar to contact cleaning by hand. Dirt is brushed loose inside the air duct and inmediately swept up by the powerful dual vacuums. This system eliminates the need for a central collection unit, dirt and debris do not have to travel throught the entire HVAC system to be collected.
The duct cleaning was great. I also ordered hookups of my washer and dryer with A1 in Beaverton, OR which was to include bringing new supply lines and a drain hose for the washer. After verifying twice this would be done with A1 on their direct office line, they called the day of the install to say they didn’t do hoses and didn’t have them. So, I don’t have a working laundry in my house until I get the hoses myself. Why did they say they could do it? What a let down.
Dear D.C.: My advice is simple: avoid those lowball offers. Companies offering a super low price on air duct cleaning might do more harm and no good. The fact of the matter is this: the average air duct cleaning for most homes costs between $300 and $500, with the price affected by factors like the size of the home, the number of ducts and their configuration. The average price for air duct cleaning is $35 per vent. So if your home has a total of 10 vents, the total would be $350.
The filter in your HVAC system should be changed at least twice a year – once just before the heating season begins and once before the cooling season begins. If you live in a particularly dusty area, you may want to change it more often. Always replace the filter with a new filter that has the same airflow rating. Again, Moody cautions, “Be careful with ‘air purifying’ or HEPA filters,” he says, “because they can dramatically reduce airflow in your system. That can cause the indoor coil to freeze because of the reduced airflow.”
If you switch off the air conditioner (at the thermostat) at any time, wait at least five minutes before switching it back on. Once off, the compressor needs time to “decompress.” If you restart it too soon, you’ll stress the motor. Many thermostats have automatic time delays built into the circuitry to protect the compressor from this problem.
We are pleased to announce that we now represent another world leader in industrial air products, Nederman, the newest addition to our line, but not to the industry. Nederman has a long history and a solid track record as a leader in the environmental technology sector.
When these aren’t properly maintained and sanitized, they can build up dust, pollen, and even mold. This means when the air conditioner or heater turns on, the spores are released into the air for you to inhale. While some are less harmful, people who have allergies or sensitivity to certain spores will react negatively. Plus, mold is dangerous for anyone to ingest and should be avoided by regular maintenance.
9. Replace furnace filter. Buying a better filter will definitely cut down on the dust in your home. But the better the filter, the more often you should change it; a dirty filter restricts the airflow to the fan, which results in the blower motor running hotter and reducing its lifespan. How often you should change your filter depends on your home, your pets, and your location.
Furnace worked fine prior to duct cleaning. Within 2 hrs after duct cleaning guys left, noticed it getting chilly in house. Furnace had not been running since they left and would not come on. What’s the chance that duct cleaning in an older home could lead to having to have a blower control board replaced at an expense of $382.00?
Homeowners who are having their ducts and vents cleaned can also opt to take advantage of other services offered by local cleaning companies. For example, Airclips Services on Ableta Boulevard also offers house cleaning services, bathroom and kitchen designing, and thermostat installation. D’s Enterprise, based out of nearby Wylie, also offers central air conditioning, gas furnace, electric furnace, and heat pump repair. These additional services can add several hundred dollars to the final bill. Dallas cleaning services average $149, while other repairs vary depending on the scope of the job.
At Mr. Duct, we understand that the decision to service the HVAC system may be a new and confusing process for many home and business owners. It may even seem that every air duct cleaning company has their own special money-making gimmick, further complicating the research and comparison process for you.
Ask them for their contractor’s license – do not hire an unlicensed duct cleaning company because there will be no insurance that the job will be done correctly, and it will be impossible to take recourse against them if it isn’t.  We are talking about a $1000 investment here, so do some research.
Many customers who contact our air duct cleaning specialists often start the conversation with this question and it can be a hard one to answer. Conditions in every building vary and depending on several factors, it may be time to have your residential, commercial, or industrial space inspected and cleaned. Some of these factors can include:
Homeowners are already asking for indoor air quality and energy saving solutions, and the demand is increasing as we speak. Our customers know that if they don’t offer these solutions, their competitors will. Our packages help you add these services, and the revenue they generate without adding the overhead of extra techs.
I had my a/c and furnace serviced and cleaned as well as my ducts cleaned and everything went smoothly and for a reasonable price. Evelyn was excellent at keeping me updated on the progress of the work since I wasn’t able to be there in person. Great customer service and speed of scheduling.
Everything went smoothly. One thing that would help would be for the payment to be clear before the visit. I did elect to have a deodorant application and I would have preferred to have the charge explained prior to the visit.
And if you have flex duct and/or fiberglass ductboard in your home- the last thing you want is a big brush or anything abrasive running through it. Even high-pressure air can erode ductboard so I wouldn’t clean it with anything. If it becomes contaminated, get rid of it and install real ductwork. If your ductwork is accessible in the basement – the best thing to do is take it down and manually clean it if it’s full of junk. It’s not going to cost a nickel more to do that than to pay $500-1000 for a ‘duct cleaning machine” AKA big blower and vacuum – to do the job.
Pollen, dust, dander, dust, mould spores and other floating light particles in the atmosphere at home may flow through your heating system and cooling system. Collected filth is accessible setback within their rooms and to return in the air flow. Floorings and furniture dusty but the air quality in your house can deteriorate. If you’ve got respiratory difficulties, may have trouble breathing. You might be exposed to pollen through the entire year, if you have problems with seasonal allergies. Filthy ducts are also efficient in cooling system and heat. The filter may get a high energy bill and clogs quicker, so the system has to work harder to move air.
The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.
I used Mr. Duct for the first time to clean a dryer vent that had not been working properly even after I had other companies/individuals take a look at it. Mr. Duct arrived on time, were very professional, organized, and knew exactly what to do. The vent now works perfectly. I will certainly use more of the Mr. Duct services.
You wouldn’t drink dirty water so why breathe dirty air? The air inside your home can actually be more polluted than the air outside. Sears has several affordable air cleaning systems available so you can breathe easier knowing your family is breathing clean air.
“Got a phone estimate with the details of work that would be performed. They were punctual, cordial, and professional. Very careful around the house and cleaned up afterwards. Couldn’t ask for better service.”
You usually don’t have easy access to the evaporator coil that’s inside the plenum or a main duct near the furnace (Fig. A). If you can get to it, vacuum the bottom side of its fins with a soft brush attachment.
how effective is duct cleaning when i have skunk odor in my home, and will duct cleaning spew the smell right back into my home. I had my home sprayed by a skunk, or I may have a dead skunk deep inside my home somewhere that we can not get to

“air duct cleaning benefits +vent and air duct cleaning”

EPA and NADCA agree that if you do hire someone to clean your air ducts, make sure they know what they’re doing — a poor job is worse than no cleaning at all, as it can kick up particles or even break portions of the HVAC system.
I’m new to this taking care of my sister home until she get better,So I want to do good job and take of her home.My is helping out and the room she’s in is very hot while the rest of the house cool it’s not fair to her.
Before we start to clean your air ducts, we will run a special camera through your ventilation system so that you can see the condition of your system before our cleaning. Once finished, you can see the difference with your own eyes as we run our camera through once more so you can see the before & after results.
Do not allow them to use steam because this introduces moisture into your air conditioning system, and although the moisture on the airflow side of your ducts will soon evaporate, steamers will also blow moisture into areas that do not receive air circulation (joints, etc.) which is a recipe for mold growth.  Don’t allow unnatural moisture into your HVAC system.  Take a look at: How Do You Prevent Mold?
3.         Access openings are cut into the main trunk duct work in strategic locations. Don’t worry; this is normal and allows us to properly remove the debris from your system. These access openings are large enough to accommodate our vacuum hoses, which start at 10″ in diameter. This is done as applicable. If ductwork is not accessible, we open up the HVAC system to access the plenums or areas of the main duct work.
Little research has been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of most biocides and ozone when used inside ducts. Simply spraying or otherwise introducing these materials into the operating duct system may cause much of the material to be transported through the system and released into other areas of your home.
Contact Carpet Tech for a free video inspection. Our expert will use a snake inspection camera to reach the interior of your duct system. You’ll see first hand how much your ducts need a thorough cleaning.
A: There are 3 major parts to an air system: 1. The supply and return grills; 2. The interior surfaces of the supply and return vents; and 3. The furnace/air conditioner air handler. All 3 components must be cleaned. If only one or two of the components are cleaned, the contaminates from the 3rd component will rapidly contaminate the ones that were cleaned.
Make sure you do your research on the NADCA.org website, the Better Business Bureau and the attorney general. At Alpine we have an A+ rating with the BBB and zero consumer complaints. We are licensed and certified through NADCA. There are a lot of shady air duct cleaning companies out there with too low to be true pricing. They are in trouble with the BBB, are NOT certified with NADCA and use bait and switch tactics. Go with a company that has long standing credibility.
It doesn’t clean all of your ductwork.  It isn’t rocket science – they are literally vacuuming the inside of your accessible ductwork.  Would you pay your neighbor $1,000 to come over with his vacuum cleaner and stick it into your AC vents?
6-Shake off any excess water and lay vents out to dry on a towel for a few minutes. They don’t have to be perfectly dry when you put them back in their spots because once you turn your furnace on again, that warm air coming through will help dry up any remaining water.
At Mr. Duct, we understand that the decision to service the HVAC system may be a new and confusing process for many home and business owners. It may even seem that every air duct cleaning company has their own special money-making gimmick, further complicating the research and comparison process for you.
Most experts, including the EPA, have not endorsed air duct cleaning as a remedy for health issues, but cleaners say they’ve amassed a growing body of anecdotal evidence that it does provide some benefit.
Ozone generators use UV light or an electrical discharge to intentionally produce ozone. Ozone is a lung irritant that can cause adverse health effects. At concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone has little effect in removing most indoor air contaminants. Thus, ozone generators are not always safe and effective in controlling indoor air pollutants. Consumers should instead use methods proven to be both safe and effective to reduce pollutant concentrations, which include eliminating or controlling pollutant sources and increasing outdoor air ventilation.
The team (yes, two people) took most of the day and thoroughly cleaned everything including the blower wheel, AC coils, condenser outside, registers, boots, trunklines, and plenums. The said they follow the national air duct cleaners assn which requires a huge HEPA-filtered collector while cleaning, rotating brushes in the duct work, air sweeping tools, etc… I thought they were very professional and very thorough! And all at a great price.
Ductwork cleaning involves more components than just the ducts themselves. The air conditioning unit and/or furnace must be addressed during the task. Maintaining these components is key to improving efficiency. The following are average costs of cleaning the various kinds of AC and furnace units.

As early as February of 1990, Duct & Vent Cleaning of America, Inc. joined NADCA, the HVAC Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Association. In fact, we were the first company to be allowed membership that used portable hepa vacuums in the cleaning process. Today there are many methods to clean ductwork and each job needs to be handled differently in the approach to achieving the desired results.
If there is stuff in the ducts, the fact that it’s laying there and not being blown into the rooms is proof positive that it is hurting no-one. The 5-6 exceptions you cite in this article I’ll buy, but only with the caveat that at least some of those could have been avoided by proper protection (during remodeling for example) – and if asbestos/lead/whatever winds up in your ducts- the remodeling contractor should be the one paying to remove it.
Every time you replace your air conditioner, I would also consider replacing your ductwork as well.  Ductwork has insulation and other components that deteriorate over time and should be replaced regularly just like your HVAC system.  Furthermore, the joint seals between duct segments will also deteriorate over time so keep this in mind.
I own and live in a mobile home and was told to install a mobile home air condition well I did not want one because the ones for moblie homes are to small,so I install a home air-condidtion and its good for heating and cooling the only thing I do is change is the filter every month or two,What I want to know is how does dirt and dust comes from????
Had duct cleaned (apartment) however, dust is still settling throughout the apartment. Contractor said no other cleaning necessary until two (2) years. Is there a time period before dust no longer settles prior to that time? Should the vendor had worn a mask? He did not cover his face the vents and dust was blown throughout the apartment (had family help with the cleanup). I had to leave when they left because I have asthma and I couldn’t breathe without coughing. Please help!
Unless you have mold or some sudden illness you think might be related to the ducts, better leave well enough alone. I regret using a coupon for a $69 heating service “tune up”. The only substantial thing I noticed is them replacing the furnace filter with one of MY filters next to the furnace, and I had replace it less than a month prior.

We had Mr. Duct out to perform an air duct cleaning for our residential home and they were great. The price was the same as the one given over the phone and we were very pleased with the results, which they proved through a video camera sweep at the end of the service.
The EPA says that indoor air is often many times more polluted than outdoor air. Many of these contaminants get stuck or even grow in the ductwork, possibly getting re-circulated into the air you breathe. According to the EPA, “Contaminated central air handling systems can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew and other sources of biological contaminants and can then distribute these contaminants through the home.”
If you price air duct cleaning from several companies, you will notice a big price difference from one company to the next. For a typical 2,000-SF home, the price might range from $60 to $600. After learning more, you will find that PRICE has a direct correlation to the DEGREE of cleaning you get.
Experts do agree that moisture should not be present in ducts and if moisture and dirt are present, the potential exists for biological contaminants to grow and be distributed throughout the home. Controlling moisture is the most effective way to prevent biological growth in all types of air ducts.

In response to Dan A. I am sorry to hear he thinks air duct cleaning is an out and out scam. I agree there are scam artists in our industry just like any other industry, wish he would’ve explained a little more about his experience.
Great service they use truck mount take them 3 hours. Found them after they clean my friend house she was very happy so called them. They explain what will be done and did a walk throw. Highly recommended

“best air duct cleaning services _productive air duct cleaning”

The fact is if they are dirty why not clean them. As for the Dr’s comment about if it is not disrupted it is fine. As a pet owner sometimes un disrupted pet hair will sit in the corner of a room or under a counter un disrupted but I still clean it when I notice it. Just because you cant see it mean you should leave it there to collect more and more. The people that don’t want there air ducts clean either simply cant afford it but would like it done. OR! the crowd that are to cheap.. You should Clean all portions of your house.
Very interesting article. I searched articles about services for cleaning ventilation systems. But I have some questions. For cleaning ventilation system used special products for cleaning. Can I know in company manager about, which type of cleaning products they use? Your family members may be allergic in some components. It’s very big problem. And one more problem it’s how to choose the right company in Internet. Sometimes I don’t have much time to find a company in my town and I use the Internet. But I find a lot of company. It is very popular services, for example, Stanley Steemer – https://www.stanleysteemer.com/ or my local not very popular service, for example, AllstatesAirDuctPro – http://allstatesairductpro.us/. Can I understand the company is professional or not, only looking through the website? What must I check on the website? Who has helpful information? I will very grateful for your help. Links I add for understanding my problem. They are random and not for advertising.
My intention was to use the $59.99 coupon for unlimited vents and 1 return. I have allergies so I wanted to make sure I cleaned out everything that is needed. The technician say that the coupon doesn’t include the furnace and the main trunks which turned out to be an extra $270 (and that I needed to have this done). On top of that I was charged $130 for a blower housing cleaning in that they used the shopvac to blow air in the ducts push debris and dust. On top of that i was charged $200 for Sanitizer and Mildicide, of which I saw the technician use a white spray bottle to spray the vents and return. He also used a drill attached with a cord. At the end of the cord it was a brush to I guess loosen the dirt in the ducts. After a vac was used to suck the dirt. He asked for my phone so he can take before and after pictures of only the return vent. His partner cleaned the furnace of which didn’t let me see how it looked after. I was charged an additional $40 for the Lifetime Electrostatic Filter (he said it was originally $120, whatever). Lastly he wanted to install a UV light to take out the mold for $600, but I declined. When they left there was dust on my TV stand the upstairs hallway (under the return vent), and mostly in the furnace. I had to replace my filter immediately since they use the shop vac to blow in the air duct technique. I plan on requesting a refund.
I purchased one of those Amazon air duct cleaning coupons for 49.99. When the company showed up, they removed the vent closest to the air intake and immediately told me I needed $1800.00 for all new duct work. They said they could not clean the system until new duct work was installed. I thanked them and said I would give them a call. The only call I made was to Amazon to get a refund. I know I didn’t need new duct work. Be careful to not fall for unscrupulous salesmen and their pitches and scare tactics.
Heat exchangers using gas to heat the air by burning all oxygen in the passing air. How you refill level of oxygen Indoors? Did you feel “Dry” air during winter Indoors? – Open windows – put fan on, let your house breath as well.
You may be familiar with air ducts that are constructed of sheet metal. However, many modern residential air duct systems are constructed of fiber glass duct board or sheet metal ducts that are lined on the inside with fiber glass duct liner. Since the early 1970’s, a significant increase in the use of flexible duct, which generally is internally lined with plastic or some other type of material, has occurred.
im buying a house on west coast of Fl close to the water. The inspector said there seemed to be mold at some registers & at some connections in the attic. The pics did show wat appeared to be mold & said its common. What do i do now? im very low on money, looking for an idea. i can replace all the flex tubing in the attic.
John – a properly maintained negative air machine has 3 stages of filters, ending in a 99.998% Hepa filter. The loose dust gets sucked into the duct cleaning machine & through the filters. If any dust is entering the home, the machine is not well-maintained.
I was an HVAC tech and a duct design specialist for 10 years before I stated duct cleaning 20 years ago, I have 8 certifications in mold and mold testing, and I’m here to tell you some of the best and worst duct cleaners I have seen have many certifications, It comes down to work pride and proper cleaning equipment. So get references from friends and family make sure the company has little or no complaints.
If your facility uses a clothes dryer, you may have a fire hazard without realizing it. Lint buildup increases risk of fire and reduces the efficiency of your dryer. This costs not only time spent working, but also increases the electric bill.

If you’ve ever noticed black lines on the edges of your carpet, then your floors are not all that needs cleaning. This is called carbon filtration, which is a good sign that it’s time to clean your air ducts. Over time, dust and grime collect in your ductwork. When your heating and cooling system blows air through your vents, this dirt comes out with it, often gathering on fibers in your carpet and upholstery. A true whole-home cleaning includes your ductwork, which means cleaner air.
The short answer is yes, duct cleaning, done right by a reputable company will help with the smell. It is likely though the smell is coming from another source, ie the crawl space. It could also be that another rodent is dead in the duct work. A visual inspection would be in order to check for any breach in the duct system. A duct pressure test would be able to tell you how much air is leaking from the system over all. A hole large enough for an animal to enter would loses a great deal of air, over 300 CFM. It would be worth looking into having this test done and it should cost around $200. Cleaning the air handler and evaporator coil will greatly improve the performance of the air conditioner. Dirt and dust on the evaporator acts as insulation and reduces the amount of cooling done be the coil. Any quality duct cleaning should include cleaning the air handler and coil, and the tech should allow you to watch him perform the work as it is done.
Remove dust and vacuum your home regularly. (Use a high efficiency vacuum (HEPA) cleaner or the highest efficiency filter bags your vacuum cleaner can take. Vacuuming can increase the amount of dust in the air during and after vacuuming as well as in your ducts).
Had my air ducts cleaned yesterday morning, it took about 4-5 hours by the time the tech finished the job. He was very professional did a very neat job, you can tell he knows what he is doing. Really good customer service before and after the scheduled appointment. I am very glad that I run into this company. Thank you
If you have allergies or asthma, you probably don’t need any allergens or contaminants entering your breathing space! With our truck, the debris that the vacuum pulls out of your air ducts falls into a trap outside , while the air is released into huge filter bags on top of the vacuum truck … outside!
Using our custom-built, high-powered vacuum trucks, we run a variety of high-pressure air tools through each duct, including brush systems and power whips. We utilize a high-powered vacuum system and a much larger vacuum hose that is 8 to 10 inches in diameter, pulling 12,000 cubic feet per minute.
Mr. Duct offers dryer vent cleaning estimates. Dryer vents with long runs often have many bends and pressurized air may not be enough to move debris out of the line. Our certified technicians will assess the situation for you with an airflow reading, develop a cleaning strategy to remove your debris, and follow up the service with another air flow reading to ensure the debris has been removed.
Trane® prides themselves on their product reliability. Most manufacturers use the same parts available to everyone. However, Trane® uses their innovations to design, build & rebuild some of their own parts.
We are certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). The NADCA protocol is set to protect consumers against “blow-and-go” companies who use inadequate equipment and methods. Periodic cleaning of your home’s HVAC system can help to prevent the accumulation of pet dander, allergens, construction debris, and other dirt particulates within your heating and cooling system.
A good air filter, replaced frequently, as well as a sealed system make duct cleaning a waste of time and money. I take the access plate off the furnace plenum and inspect the A-coil frequently. It is squeaky clean, invariably. Why? The air filter grabs 99% of the dust and airborne particles, hair, etc., before it reaches the coil.
Experts say research on the health benefits of residential duct cleaning is still in its infancy. Glenn Fellman, the Indoor Air Quality Association’s executive director, says that despite the lack of scientific data, he’s seen and heard much common-sense evidence of improved air quality.
Violet Shrop – Thank you and no. You don’t want the power off while cleaning registers…you want the fan running. Now once you get to the furnace itself, at the end and you’re ready to change the filter and wrap up…yes. Turn off the power.
Cleaning your ductwork can damage it.  Secondly, the air duct cleaning procedure consists of sticking vacuum tubes down your ductwork, which can damage and crack the sensitive plastic interior of your ductwork.  It is also important to know that, despite what they might say, most duct cleaning companies are not HVAC contractors!  They actually know very little about the proper operation of your system.
Make sure ducts are properly sealed and insulated in all non-air-conditioned spaces (e.g., attics and crawl spaces). This will help to prevent moisture due to condensation from entering the system and is important to make the system work as intended. To prevent water condensation, the heating and cooling system must be properly insulated.
I had a company come and clean my air ducts (10 registers- 4 intakes with 2 trunk lines). I was okay with the price of $400. Then, they said I needed to have the ducts sanitized and disinfected and was charged another $360. I was told this process was $18 per duct. That’s 14 ducts multiplied by the $18 which was another $252. When I went to pay however – they said there were more ducts and when I protested he cut me off and was very adamant about the payment. I know I should have tried harder but felt intimidated. I’m confused – was $260 a fair amount?
Hello, I read your comment and I know it was two years ago but I hope you see my message. I am trying to figure out what to do as I was told that there is some cat odor in the finished basement. I think with the air conditioning running that it may carry odor. The litter boxes are always kept clean. I wonder if odor can be trapped in the ducts, if Air Duct Cleaning could help, but it is quite expensive plus I’m concerned that it may not help. Please elaborate as to why you think it doesn’t work that well. Do you have any other advise? Did you work in the field of Air Duct Cleaning? Thanks so much!
Since most states and municipalities don’t license air duct cleaners, you need to check their professional credentials instead, such as NADCA membership. EPA recommends all duct cleaners follow NADCA standards. Member companies must keep at least one technician on staff who has passed a NADCA test. “They have to pass rigorous testing to earn the certificate, and our code of ethics is very important,” Vinick says.

What about cleaning your AC ducts to eliminate odors?  Just like with smoking, it is the dust in your ducts that holds the odors so prevention is the key.  However, there are some problems with your air conditioner that can create odors.  Ensure that you keep your evaporator coil and drain pan clean to prevent odor problems, then read: Dirty Sock Syndrome – What is it, is it dangerous, and how to I fix it?
Furnace worked fine prior to duct cleaning. Within 2 hrs after duct cleaning guys left, noticed it getting chilly in house. Furnace had not been running since they left and would not come on. What’s the chance that duct cleaning in an older home could lead to having to have a blower control board replaced at an expense of $382.00?
Just bought a house that’s been vacant for a long time. I got little bugs coming out my vents .Want to get it clean but don’t know nothing . what the proper tools companies should be using since this is a expensive job.

We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)
Once the 10″ hose is connected to the system the huge vacuum fan on the truck begins pulling air from the living spaces down through the duct work. By covering the registers a negative pressure is created within the system so dirt and dust can’t return back into the living spaces.
We use top of the line equipment and cleaning tools to thoroughly scrub clean all the interior surfaces of your duct system, including main trunk lines to and from the furnace. Our equipment is portable and most jobs are done within 2-4 hours.
As an example…. let’s say you have a car that goes through oil. The oil light comes on to tell you the car is low on oil. Your first thought is to add oil. You add the oil the oil light on the car goes off.
I purchased a Groupon for cleaning of unlimited air ducts and one return vent for $39. I should have checked into their hours first because they only offer services during normal business hours. So, with no evenings or weekends available you have to take time off work. I asked Groupon for a refund when I realized this and they refused because it wasn’t within the three day window. Then they didn’t even show up or call for the appointment. I called them after they were an hour late and they were going to call the local dispatch office and have them call me back within 15 minutes. I did not receive that call. I called again and was told I would get a call back from a manager. That didn’t happen either. So I asked Groupon for a refund again and they gave me Groupon bucks. When the survey came asking if I was satisfied with the Groupon customer service I said no, I want real money. I got my real refund the next day. Seems to me Groupon should stop dealing with these companies.
Your system can be treated with a sealant. These sealants prevent dirt and dust from getting sent back into the air. Sanitizer chemicals can also be added to prevent the growth of mold and other allergens. This is a possible solution for saving on fewer A/C cleanings in the future.
Dear Angie: I’m looking to have my air ducts cleaned but I’ve seen prices vary from $99 to $800. I have not been given an explanation, that I believe, that describes the reason for the price difference. What are your thoughts on the reasons for the wide range of costs? — D.C., Landisville, Pennsylvania.
A complete indoor air system cleaning includes the air handling units, coils, blowers, fresh air intake duct, supply & return ducts, supply diffusers and return air intake grills. We pressure wash the units, coils & blowers. These components are then rinsed free of all detergent residue. The HVAC fresh air intake duct, along with supply & return ducts are HEPA brush vacuum cleaned to remove all dirt and other visible accumulation. All supply diffusers and return air intake grills are removed, cleaned & replaced. Smaller ducts are accessed from diffuser openings and access openings, which OMI provides when necessary.  OMI has been performing HVAC cleaning in the Chicago area since 1972.
Did not realize cost had gone up so much for this service. Two years ago I had furnace and ducts cleaned at my old house and it was under $400. Now the cost is $700 for this house. I will keep looking for someone to offer a lower price, check them out, and have it done. Or will find the paperwork to see who did it before. I liked this article and did learn some things. Thanks.
At Better Air, we specialize in HVAC duct cleaning services and dryer vent cleaning services. As a duct cleaning company, our professionals treat your duct work with care, not as a mere afterthought like some HVAC duct cleaning companies and technicians.

At Mr. Duct, we understand that the decision to service the HVAC system may be a new and confusing process for many home and business owners. This is very helpful…I appreciate the step by step information as well as the pictures. I will pass this along to my son-in-law as I think this is something he will use soon. As a matter of fact, he will probably use it at my house!!! Great job…congrats on the hub of the day too….
On the exterior condenser/compressor, remove the fan cage. Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove the fasteners and lift the cage or fan grill away from the top of the unit. By hand, or with a wet/dry vacuum, clean leaves and other debris from the interior.
Extreme Clean is a unique cleaning process designed to reduce levels of household dust and allergens within the home. We combine a traditional maid service with specialized equipment and cleaning strategies from our mold remediation division. The result is a significant reduction in the amount of household dust, even deeply impacted dust from the interior space of your home.
The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.
Quality and price should come hand in hand, a too-good-to-be-true price for an efficient air duct cleaning will not give you the quality that you wanted. To make sure you are getting your money’s worth, check reviews of air duct cleaning companies, certifications from industry since this work requires continuous learning due to new techniques and research breakthrough from time to time. My mom is located in Arizona and they trust J&M Restoration air duct cleaning company, they have an A+ BBB rating, they used EPA approved sanitizing agents, their technicians are NADCA certified, and the company is certified by the Institute of Inspection, cleaning and Restoration. Make sure to shop around and get written estimates first.
We live in a world where healthy living has become a way of life. We exercise and eat healthy to make ourselves feel better. We have also taken on environmental issues to make our homes a cleaner and safer place to live. Yet the most overlooked issue is the air that we breathe.
One of the best ways to know if your ducts or vents need to be cleaned is to just check them. Your eyes will be able to check for indications of mold, dust or pollen buildup. You might also be able to smell the presence of mold, which would be a clear indicator. Ductwork will have some buildup of dust, since the return registrars pull air back in. However, this doesn’t mean your ducts have too much debris, and you can easily clean them with a duster or vacuum.
If there is stuff in the ducts, the fact that it’s laying there and being blown into the rooms is proof positive that it is hurting no-one. The 5-6 exceptions you cite in this article I’ll buy, but only with the caveat that at least some of those could have been avoided by proper protection (during remodeling for example) – and if asbestos/lead/whatever winds up in your ducts- the remodeling contractor should be the one paying to remove it.
I’ve read a lot of replies on here and I’m sorry for people’s bad experiences with companies who shouldn’t be cleaning ducts. The only problem I have with the post on Angie’s list is the pricing is a bit low for companies like mine to make a profit. I have owned a NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) Certified duct cleaning company since 1999. We do residential, hospitals, factories, and commercial buildings. We send a NADCA certified ASCS (Air Systems Cleaning Specialist) and VSMR (Ventilation System Mold Remediators) specialist to every job we do, including residential jobs. It cost us a lot to keep our certifications up, we have to go to classes each year for this. Our prices are higher than the prices Angie’s List stated, but its like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. A home that is 1500 sq ft would take 2 technicians about 4 hours to do the work because most the homes in the area I cover have crawl spaces, and they have to crawl under the house to clean the ductwork. This is 8 total work hours for this job, plus the cost of travel time and gas to get to the jobsite. The cost of the job would be $750. A larger home would be more depending on the size of the house. That is a bit higher than Angie’s list stated, but this covers everything with no hidden cost. And to send 2 qualified people to a job site its going to cost more than 1 guy going in with a shop vac type system and telling the home owner that he doesn’t need to go under the house or in the attic to clean the duct work. We get a lot of jobs going behind these type duct cleaners to fix what they messed up then the home owner is stuck paying 2 companies. One last thing, make sure the person is NADCA certified, and not just say certified. Some of the companies who make shop vac type systems will teach a day and a half class and then give the person a certification saying they can operate that duct machine. This is NOT the same as NADCA certification. NADCA is the only certification recognized by the EPA for cleaning HVAC Duct. Good luck and have a great day.

Improved air quality begins with the lungs of your home. Your air ducts are that hidden room in your house, and the air you breathe may be passing through dirt, dust, and debris. Whether you suffer from sinus and allergy problems, have a new baby in the home, notice a lot of dust, or simply want to breathe cleaner air, calling DuctMedic is a first step to healthier living and a cleaner home.
The most efficient way to filter household air is through your home’s forced-air heating or central air-conditioning system. The filters are built into the return-air ductwork, trapping particles as air passes through. Such systems are passive; as long as the fan is running, they are constantly filtering all the air in your house. Whole-house filters come in four main types.
It’s time to face some truths. Living in the Las Vegas Valley doesn’t always mean gambling, exciting night life or even four season weather; it’s a desert. Not only do local residents have to deal with scorching, dry summers, but Las Vegans also have to accept living in a dust bowl. Living in a place like Las Vegas basically indicates that after spending hours of your day dusting, vacuuming, sweeping and mopping, that within 15 minutes of enjoying the fresh clean environment; dust has already settled and you have yet another layer of dust to remove. So imagine the places in your home that you don’t see!
Mr. Duct is the number one expert in air duct cleaning: we had called another company out because, truthfully, their pricing was lower, but boy did it jump when they got to the house! Mr. Duct’s estimate was the same as the one given over the phone and we’re happy with the work.

As an ex-Industrial Hygienist with OSHA, and current manager of a carpet cleaning company, we use a low moisture process that allows for drying within one hour, minimizing the potential for a great mold or bacteria media.
This is really well written & helpful. Just to make sure: so to clean your return register, you don’t need to shut the power off? I wouldn’t think so either, mine looks like yours, just a space under the hvac cabinet, no electric element seen. Thanks.
I am reading theses emails from home owners and HVAC Duct Cleaning Companies. My Advice is Simple. In NC where I live and work, the air duct cleaning Industry is unregulated. There are less then honest companies selling their services every day – even on Angie’s List! I know – I own and operate a HVAC restoration company and see the scams every day!
I am just a homeowner and have absolutely no qualifications, but it seems pretty logical to me that a good cleaning every once in a while is just a good practice. It just seems like too vital of component in a vital system to never clean.
Having evaporator and condenser coils cleaned could cost between $100 and $400. If your coils can be accessed in-place, you’ll be looking at a lower service cost. If your technician needs to remove the them first, the cost should be around $400. Having the evaporator and condenser coils cleaned can have a significant impact on the efficiency of your system. If your coils are excessively dirty, they won’t be able to do their job and your system will have to work harder. Keeping up with the hygiene of these components can save you money in both the short and long-term. For example, replacing evaporator coils can cost anywhere from $650 to $1200.
NADCA Certified Duct Cleaners: The National Air Duct Cleaners Association is an organization of air duct cleaning companies that are dedicated to higher standards of quality and ethical practices in their business. Four Seasons goes the extra mile to meet or exceed the standards set forth by NADCA, and we only hire NADCA certified Duct Cleaning Specialists.

Experts do agree that moisture should not be present in ducts and if moisture and dirt are present, the potential exists for biological contaminants to grow and be distributed throughout the home. Controlling moisture is the most effective way to prevent biological growth in all types of air ducts.

There is no standard measurement for the effectiveness of PCO cleaners. The use of PCO cleaners in homes is limited because currently available catalysts are ineffective in destroying gaseous pollutants from indoor air. Some PCO cleaners fail to destroy pollutants completely and instead produce new indoor pollutants that may cause irritation of the eyes, throat and nose.
A year and a half ago (fall of 2015) we replaced the furnace and air conditioner. From what we could determine this was the third forced air furnace and second air conditioner unit for the house. As part of the installation, we changed out the two 6″ ducts feeding the second floor with 8″ ducts. The idea was to get more cold air to the second floor in the summer. It worked and for the first time the second floor and first floor temperatures were the same when the air conditioner was running. Of course, to make the system work I close down upstairs duct damper doors in the winter and open them up in the summer.
We hired Mr.Duct to clean our dryer vent. Ivan, our technician, was prompt, courteous, and performed a thorough cleaning of our dryer system. I will recommend Mr.Duct to anyone and use them again ourselves!

I have been an Indoor Air Quality Investigator and HVAC abatement contractor for 32 years. These so called “duct cleaners”, in many cases, are scam artists at best, and some ,(in my opinion), should go to jail.
Verify Results: You should be offered a complete visual inspection of the HVAC system and ductwork, either in person or by remote camera. Make sure every single duct is clean, and insist on an inspection of the inside of the HVAC unit, before paying for the service.
Sears two-step, hot water extraction process, and our specially formulated cleaning solutions and fiber rinse are unlike most other carpet & upholstery cleaners. With the steam cleaning process, warm/hot water is used to loosen dirt embedded deep in the carpet fibers then it is quickly extracted with powerful vacuum equipment. Our second step, the Fiber Rinse, insures that we have removed the most dirt and cleaning solution (residue) from your carpet so it will be soft, fresh and stay cleaner longer.
A: The frequency of air duct cleaning in Atlanta GA depends on several factors, smokers or pets in the home, water contamination, residents with allergies or asthma, after renovations or prior to moving into a new home all are factors in determining when and how often a Heating and Air Conditioning system should be cleaned. Our general rule of thumb is an air duct system could be cleaned as often as every two years but no more than five years should elapse between cleanings.
On the exterior condenser/compressor, remove the fan cage. Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove the fasteners and lift the cage or fan grill away from the top of the unit. By hand, or with a wet/dry vacuum, clean leaves and other debris from the interior.
Whether or not you decide to have the air ducts in your home cleaned, preventing water and dirt from entering the system is the most effective way to prevent contamination (see How to Prevent Duct Contamination).
If you have a forced-air furnace, you’ve already got a rudimentary air-filtration system: That matted-fiberglass filter that should be changed once a month. “You can’t change it often enough,” says This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey. When it clogs with dust, it stops working and overworks the furnace. In fact, those filters are designed to protect your furnace from large particles of dust, and while they might keep surfaces in your house a bit cleaner, they won’t block the microscopic particles that are most irritating to lung tissue. Pleated filters, which pack more material in the same amount of space, cost a few bucks more and do a slightly better job. By far the best pleated filters are electrostatically charged to attract allergens like pollen and pet dander. They cost around $15 and should be changed every two to three months.
Cleaning your ducts will also keep your home cleaner! As dust and debris, makes its way through your system, it ends up blowing back at you through your supply air vents. A clean home is a happy home, and less time dusting leaves more time for leisure.
Here in Atlanta we get 6 to 10 $49 coupons in the mail weekly…I have always consider them a complete scam….just had my master bathroom& bedroom and guest bath completely remodeled down to the studs…Had my 3 returns nearest the area sealed to prevent sheet rock dust to spread…it worked and I personally cleaned all 7 returns when a 5 HP , new Rigid shop Vac($99 from HD)…took one hour and I found little evidence that “I need my ducts cleaned” Had quotes from $400 to $600…I use the best air filters for my air handler and change it every 2 to 3 months…..any dust is trapped in it and I believe the Air Duct folks are all cons….
1. Cover supply registers. Start by covering up your supply air registers (openings that supply heated air to the rooms) with paper towels. You do this to keep dislodged dust from drifting into the rooms as you work. Simply lift the register, wrap the paper towel over the top of it, and replace it.
Typically, air filters are either built into the heating and cooling system (whole-house filters) or are freestanding units that can be placed in individual rooms (portable filters with self-contained fans).
I had both of our furnaces cleaned and inspected. The 3 gentleman were on time, looked professional and best of all walked me through the entire process. If you are looking for a reliable service that promises what they quote…look no further.
Please record the sales pitch you receive and post it up here. I’ve heard such stories about the coupon deals (either not showing up or hard selling upgrades), it would be great to hear how it goes for you.
If there is evidence of rodents or animal infestation in your duct work, then again you will need to contact a licensed HVAC contractor.  I would recommend you replace your entire duct system.  Cleaning won’t do the trick because the problem is that rodents are in your ductwork, NOT the “evidence” they have left behind.  Your ductwork needs to be replaced and properly sealed so rodents can’t enter.  If you must get your ductwork cleaned, then still have an air conditioning repairman inspect every inch of your ductwork for leaks.
9.         Once all vents are cleaned, we clean the main trunk ducts. We start at the far end of the trunk duct, away from the vacuum. Typically, all trunk ducts are mechanically brushed, air-whipped, and air-washed. The brushing and cleaning method is dictated by the construction of your duct system. Every home is different, so different tools are used to accommodate this. All the agitated material is caught in the air stream of the vacuum and sent down the line. If your main trunk duct is accessible, we typically install duct access every 15 to 20 feet to make sure we are removing EVERYTHING from the duct system.
I am 79 years old, bought a condo & spent a lot of money on it. this winter my first bill was 450.00. had my furnace checked out, which is on the roof. it was old rusted out & leeking oil. i talked to owner & had new unit installed. they came out to clean ducks & they were split & worn out. there is no crawl space because theres a unit above me. my real estate lady or this company will not help me fix this problem.

For your convenience, an adjustable handle is attached to the Rotobrush aiR+ XP. Take your device wherever you need, and when you are done, collapse the handle for easy loading into your truck or vehicle.
I am a service technician [since ’92]…..and as to double filtering…..I have never recommended it. Granted…..it would be noticeably helpful if the fiberglass filters are the main ones used [which I also never recommend…..as long as system can deliver appropriate air flow with a pleated cotton filter…and any decent service tech can check the air flow for proper cfm]. Any particles small enough to pass through a pleated cotton filter are going to pass through a second filter as well….unless the second filters are so tight that the system is starving for air flow. Has anybody ever accidentally put two filters in their automatic drip coffee maker? What if cars used two fuel filters or air filters? I have told some homeowners to try using second filters at each register [the black thin filter material cut-to-fit….same type used in many window air conditioners]…..but I only suggest this when I know they will still get at least 400 cfm per ton of air flow [350 absolute minimum]……as some homeowners know others who say it has helped and it gives them a peace of mind knowing they are doing something to help contribute to a solution, so it HAS to help [even though I think it falls in the “one-born-every-minute” category…..similar to duct cleaning].
Make sure to shop around and get written estimates first.
it’s February and I just had Mr. Duct clean my ducts and furnace fan. The techs, Charles and Ivan, were professional in the delivery of their service. They use the care you would want of your home. This is a company to be trusted and used.
I recently replaced my 44 year old furnace. Over the years we have had several construction projects inside the home. For many years breathing the heated air from the duct work caused excessive sneezing, sinus issues, and lung irritation. . The heat smelled like dust. To maximize air quality I added a humidifier, MERV-11 filter, and UV light onto the new furnace. To further improve air quality, I had the ducts cleaned and sanitized. I took before and after pictures of the inside of each return and output duct. They were filthy before, and sparkling clean and fresh after the procedure. Now when running the system, clean sanitized air flows through my whole house. A huge difference. It will make sleeping and being indoors during the winter months far more tolerable. I use window air conditioners, and run the system in the summer to keep the house air clean and fresh on hot summer days too. It works! Great decision!
These high-tech units, sometimes called electrostatic precipitators, are also incorporated into the ductwork. As air passes through, a high-voltage current puts an electrical charge on particles. At the other end of the unit, oppositely charged collector plates grab the particles like a magnet. Electronic filters work especially well on smoke particles too small to be trapped in media filters. One independent test found such filters worked about 30 times as well as regular fiberglass filters. (There is no industry yardstick for measuring the effectiveness of whole-house units, because performance is affected by a home’s blower and ductwork.) Unlike media filters, electronic filters never need replacing, but the aluminum collector plates must be cleaned in soapy water every few months. The process of charging particles, called ionization, may produce trace amounts of ozone, a lung irritant (see “Eye on Ions,” page 66). Electronic filters cost $600 to $1,000 installed and require a 120-volt electrical outlet.
Joshua and Andre, Orlando did such outstanding work in my house, that I’m going to recommend their services to everyone in our sub division on our list sevre. I was very impressed with the manner and which they was so careful to keep my light carpets clean. And when Joshua showed me the condition inside my furnace I was. Wry concerned because has been doing a very bad job servicing my furnace twice a year for the last 5 years. Please thank your technicians very much on my behalf.
I used Mr. Duct for the first time to clean a dryer vent that had not been working properly even after I had other companies/individuals take a look at it. Mr. Duct arrived on time, were very professional, organized, and knew exactly what to do. The vent now works perfectly. I will certainly use more of the Mr. Duct services.

It’s simple: over time as air is processed by the handlers and blown through the ducts, they will accumulate build-up. This happens anywhere, from a pristine office to less pristine industrial buildings. This buildup can lead to clogged HVAC vents, decrease the efficiency of the system, and even strain or damage the main unit, since it has to work harder to pump air through a dirty, clogged up system. This is a situation where spending a little now to keep your duct system clean can save a lot later.
Manufacturers of products marketed to coat and encapsulate duct surfaces claim that these sealants prevent dust and dirt particles inside air ducts from being released into the air. As with biocides, a sealant is often applied by spraying it into the operating duct system. Laboratory tests indicate that materials introduced in this manner tend not to completely coat the duct surface. Application of sealants may also affect the acoustical (noise) and fire retarding characteristics of fiber glass lined or constructed ducts and may invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.
On the other hand, if family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor. EPA has published the following publications for guidance on identifying possible indoor air quality problems and ways to prevent or fix them.
Working together, the brush, rotating at 450 rpm, and vacuum will clean any air duct. This combination ensures professionally cleaned air ducts for your customers. And to make sure this system is safe for flex duct and all air ducts, the Rotobrush aiR+ XP encloses the rotating cable inside the hose.
If you ask most people to define HVAC, they’ll probably just point to the unit out behind their house or the big equipment on the roof of the neighboring office building. The average Joe doesn’t think beyond those visible pieces of the system or beyond “it’s what keeps us cool.” But the truth is that those HVAC and A/C units are just one part of an HVAC system. The other major component is the HVAC ducts running through the entire home or building. Think of the unit as the heart and the ducts as the arteries. It’s just as important to keep the arteries in good shape as it is the heart! This is why it’s crucial to hire duct cleaning services, and we think the best choice is to go with a dedicated duct cleaning company like Better Air.
I own an HVAC company. Dirt in your ducts stays there and hurts no one. It is like dirt on the ground outside. This industry was infiltrated by a bunch of money grubbing low lifes years ago. As a credible company, we do not clean air ducts. Some who were credible probably signed on not knowing what else to do or to try to make a buck another way. These companies, because they also do HVAC work not only rip off private homeowners, they are ripping off legitimate HVAC company’s customers and the integrity of what can and should as a rule be a great service industry. Some probably have gotten into this to simply offer what competitors who were ripping off their customers were offering. Anyone cleaning ducts is in my opinion raising a big red flag that they cannot and should not be trusted. Political pressure from NADCA, advertising dollars, manufacturers and marketers of duct cleaning equipment, and intense competition for the customers is the only reason the government and adverstising companies have not run them out of business and that this cancer perpetuates itself.
I will have to wait and see if the the duct cleaning does make a difference. I would also prefer if the contact person would explain in detail all the possibilities of what extra expenses or extra work might be recommended. I trusted the technicians’ knoledge, but did not know if all that was recommended was truly necessary.
I’ve been in business in Florida for 25 years and purchased a $12,000 duct cleaning system 4 years ago. In the last four years I’ve cleaned 5 duct systems charging around $400 each. Not a very good return on investment. What I have been doing most the time is I get a call by someone panicked because they called some low priced company to inspect their system and were told they have dangerous black mold. Then they call me to have a look. Most the time they don’t have mold, ducts look very clean. However the coils are dirty and the inside of the air handler cabinet needs cleaning. Keep in mind not every system can handle supper high efficiency filters! These filters can block air flow quite a bit right out of the package. Many older systems can’t handle pleated filters due to increased static pressure. “Back rooms with low air flow”. I have taken many hours of classroom study on indoor air quality. Never got any certification because I don’t want to pay another organization dues yearly. I think the problem with duct / system cleaning is most people are suckers for low priced scams that are rip- offs . People call me all the time and ask how much? When I tell them average $400 they hang up. I know I do the job correctly and honestly, and they are going to get racked over the coals by the scam artists by calling $79 whole house duct cleaning guys. People need to check internet, angies list and BBB reviews. But keep in mind even reviews need to be sifted through your rational person filter.

Here’s the problem with those $99 specials (we’ve actually seen them advertised for as low as $49): What typically happens in those scenarios is the company offers this great price, usually in the form of a coupon, to get in the door. Once inside, they almost immediately find other problems — black mold is a common scare tactic used by unscrupulous contractors — or they try to upsell the homeowner on additional services. Those who fall prey to these air duct cleaning scams often pay upward of $600, even into the thousands.

“The free estimate not only have me an exact price for my service, but also some education on my a/c system. When they did the service they were very friendly and efficient. And along the way, showed me what was being done, and the before-and-after condition of my vents and ducts. Since we just bought our house, I wanted to give the vents and ducts a thorough cleaning and scrubbing. After seeing what came out, I am so glad I did! I will definitely have them back for my yearly servicing.”
The EPA is so far behind on useful knowledge because of the lack of funding so don’t be mislead. The Hvac old timers were left at the dock so to speak and missed out on the IAQ movement. The ones that are savvy and up to date on the information do Air Duct Cleaning, even tho that will lead to a few less service calls its the right thing to do for their customer. Please take a look into a return duct that has never been cleaned, I dare anyone to say it does not need to be cleaned.
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Cleaning your air conditioning ducts sounds like a good idea, but to be perfectly honest it is mostly marketing and hype, in my not-so-humble opinion.  I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a scam, per se, but I would tell you to be careful with your money when you start asking yourself, “should I have my air ducts cleaned?”  If you follow proper preventative HVAC maintenance practices, then you really shouldn’t have to have your AC ducts cleaned, and if you do decide to do it, then it should only be a one-time thing.  If you do decide to go through with it, thats okay, but I’d recommend you follow the tips above and try not to buy into the hype too much.  For more information on other related air conditioning topics, visit the ASM Air Conditioning Blog.  If you live in Santa Clarita and the Southern California area, give us a call and we’d be happy to help you: Contact All Systems Mechanical.
The Environmental Protection Agency says that “duct cleaning services typically – but not always – range in cost from $450 to $1000 per heating and cooling system, depending on the services offered, the size of the system to be cleaned, system accessibility, climactic region, and level of contamination” and type of duct material. Consumers should beware of air duct cleaning companies that making sweeping claims about the health benefits of duct cleaning – such claims are unsubstantiated. Consumers should also beware of “blow-and-go” air duct cleaning companies. These companies often charge a nominal fee and do a poor job of cleaning the heating and cooling system. These companies may also persuade the consumer into unneeded services with and/or without their permission. (If you have knowledge of a practicing “blow-and-go” air duct cleaner, contact your local Better Business Bureau to report the company, and your local, federal, and state elected officials to demand legislation.)
The brush system rotates at 450rpm to loosen the debris from inside walls of the air ducts. As it is loosened, the debris is then vacuumed up in the nozzle located behind the head of the brush. This combination ensures professionally cleaned air ducts for your customers. Because the rotating cable is enclosed within the hose, it is safe to use in every type of duct application including flexible duct work.

“air duct cleaning reviews _air duct cleaning faq”

If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.
Pay particular attention to cooling coils, which are designed to remove water from the air and can be a major source of contamination of the system that can lead to mold growth. Make sure the condensate pan drains properly. The presence of substantial standing water and/or debris indicates a problem requiring immediate attention. Check any insulation near cooling coils for wet spots.
When you hire someone to put up wallpaper or build a fence, it’s easy to see whether it’s a good job. But with services like air duct cleaning, there’s much more risk of fraud because the homeowner can’t easily check the work. A disreputable company may not have the proper equipment to do a quality air duct cleaning job, may overcharge you, may leave the ducts dirty or filled with debris and may even do costly damage to your home’s HVAC system. Some companies entice you with very low offers, such as $59 for a whole-house cleaning, then pile on extra charges.
There’s no research at present proving that routine duct cleaning improves the air quality or reduces dust in your home. There is, however, evidence that dirty heating and cooling coils, motors, and air handling units can make your HVAC unit less efficient.

Many customers who contact our air duct cleaning specialists often start the conversation with this question and it can be a hard one to answer. Conditions in every building vary and depending on several factors, it may be time to have your residential, commercial, or industrial space inspected and cleaned. Some of these factors can include:
HELP is am drowing in LENT . It has been noticed in the master bedroom there is lent all over the furniture and the floors. I have dark brown/black furniture and same for the wooden floors. There are wods of lent every day. My furniture covered in lent. The rest of the house is fine just the tipical dust. I am sure my lungs are also full of lent. I looks like if my dryer vent was in my bedroom. Please help
Someone came and said it would be 8,000 but would do it for 4,000. I got a new unit in a few years ago but it has never have the ducks clean and they were put in around 20 years ago. I have 8 vents and duck is in the attic.
While these steps will help to keep your AC system in top shape, be aware that there are maintenance items that only a trained HVAC technician will be able to do. For example, a slow refrigerant leak in your AC system can lead to expensive compressor failure, but a homeowner doesn’t have the tools or skills necessary to check refrigerant levels. Also, clean ducts and proper airflow are essential to a well-functioning system, but homeowners lack the necessary equipment for the job. The bottom line? While some AC maintenance can be done by a savvy homeowner, it’s still necessary to have an expert technician check the system periodically.
I am NADCA Certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist. Over the year I have learned on simple answer to this questions: there air duct cleaners and there are pretenders. There will be no benefit at all if you use on the very cheap pretender because they will not really clean anything. On the other hand if you call a qualified air duct cleaner with a NADCA Certification you will, like 99% of my customers, report improvement with your respiratory problems, you will see less dust and the job will pay for itself with energy savings and repair prevention.
A small number of products are currently registered by EPA specifically for use on the inside of bare sheet metal air ducts. A number of products are also registered for use as sanitizers on hard surfaces, which could include the interior of bare sheet metal ducts. While many such products may be used legally inside of unlined ducts if all label directions are followed, some of the directions on the label may be inappropriate for use in ducts. For example, if the directions indicate “rinse with water”, the added moisture could stimulate mold growth.
Had my air ducts cleaned with company named WellDuct in Edison New Jersey, total cost was $450. Have a two floor condo, technicians said the system was never cleaned, it took them about three hours. Since I am just moving in, I can not tell the difference. They collected about 3-4 pounds of dust, is that normal amount or should be more?

I just bought a home, and the sellers clearly never had the air ducts cleaned. This is, unfortunately, typical of their neglect of the home, so I am not surprised. I was cleaning around the wooden floor registers, and I took the registers off. I found nests of some sort…all kinds of really gross stuff!! I am calling now to schedule duct cleaning for my new home. Anyway, it is very easy to check to see if you really need duct cleaning. Remove the floor registers and use a flashlight if necessary to see if there is dust or debris in the ducting. If these look bad, I’d definitely have the system cleaned. I would also do it after a construction project, after installing a new furnace, etc. I have found that once I had my previous system cleaned, it seemed to remain spotless for 3 years. So it seems that if you just change your filters on time (I have an iPhone alert set for every 3 months), the system will stay clean for years. Hope this helps!
I agree that good filtration and a sealed system will prevent the need for duct cleaning. However, when we do get called it is because the duct work has reached a noticeable state of restriction or dust or the homeowner is hyper-sensitive to these pollutants in their home. Most of the time we find that no filter or a cheap (99 cent) filter is being used or they have serious duct leaks in the system. If you are hiring a cleaner make sure they are using professional cleaning equipment which will consist of a rotating brush system and a vacuum source. Be highly skeptical of the contractor with no branded system or the guy who shows up with just chimney brushes and a shop vac. He will not be able to reach around all the corners or all the runs in your system and he will be taking your money for a superficial cleaning at best. Only trust a company that offers VIDEO inspection and more importantly…. a contractor who repairs, installs and seals ducts if a problem is discovered or heaven forbid, created. Good luck and get your ducts sealed if you do have a leak! It is one of the greatest energy losses to a home other than being poorly insulated.
If you price air duct cleaning from several companies, you will notice a big price difference from one company to the next. For a typical 2,000-SF home, the price might range from $60 to $600. After learning more, you will find that PRICE has a direct correlation to the DEGREE of cleaning you get.
There are many things that people can do themselves in regards to HVAC when given the needed information. I am glad you find this useful. I have and will continue to publish hubs that not only show people things about HVAC they can do themselves but will also save very significant amounts of money. HVAC is an expensive service so anything you can learn to do yourself will save a minimum of $125 as this is the common base rate of a licensed service trip.
Bill – The metal shouldn’t hold the smell and you probably won’t be able to clean it all unless you disconnect it so for the time and effort, I’d replace the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean purchased a Rainbow over 32 years ago when my wife and I had just welcomed our first child. As new parents, we were sold on its cleaning ability and, of course, all of the other features. We are still using the same Rainbow today (three children and five grandchildren later). It still has the best suction. Who knows how long it will continue to run and serve us faithfully.- JOE B.
Knowledge about air duct cleaning is in its early stages, so a blanket recommendation cannot be offered as to whether you should have your air ducts in your home cleaned. NADCA and EPA both have good points. Although, organizations are made to make money. Common sense and looking at NADCA and EPA pre-checklist. If you don’t see it in the check list, you don’t have to do it! But, if you do, look up Diamond certified co.s and the BBB. Beware of bait and switch scams, $60 vents and the like coupons which claim to help all for the measley sum of $79.00 bucks.
I’m new to this taking care of my sister home until she get better,So I want to do good job and take of her home.My is helping out and the room she’s in is very hot while the rest of the house cool it’s not fair to her.
As is customary with credentialing practices, NADCA worked with independent test development experts and industry professional Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) engaged in the practice of HVAC system cleaning to perform a job analysis for the ASCS certification. The job analysis ensures the credential reflects the most current practices in the industry and properly reflects the knowledge, skills and abilities required for cleaning and restoring HVAC systems.
Check it to make sure the tube isn’t clogged by sludge and algae, especially at the drain port (Photo 8). A flexible tube is easy to pull off and clean, but you might have to saw off a rigid plastic tube with a hacksaw to check it. Then reweld it with the proper pipe joint solvent and coupling.
I agree, if you replace (or wash depending on type) your air filters regularly AND vaccum, then you probably don’t need the ducts or air coils cleaned. However, if you purchase a pre-owned home, and the previous owners did not regularly change the air filter or vaccum the home, then duct cleaning is worth the expense especially if you are sensitive to allergens. Especially if the previous owners had pets.
Steve is the person telling the truth here about AC duct cleaning and AC filter cleaning and changing. Many of the other comments come from uninformed homeowners and those who want to get people to hire AC contractors and pay hundreds of dollars for useless services.
In 1974 we began our relationship with Honeywell, a major manufacturer, when we agreed to produce commercial electronic air cleaners for them – an agreement that would last 10 years. Shortly thereafter, we also began designing and producing Honeywell’s industrial electrostatic precipitators. This line later grew to include disposable mechanical filter systems.
You have covered all necessary points on your blog. Dirty ducts blow dust, lint and other debris into every room of your home but sometimes you have to call professional for all duct cleaning services.
The “interior Fogger” works well for a short period of time, but because of the amount of DEEP Mildew smell in my particular car, it seemed to only “mask” the odor and failed to remove the lingering musty smell which returned after a day or so. I used the second can in my daily driver and it worked great in there and has lasted to this day since I employed it over a month ago I ended up finding a much affordable solution that solved the problem: Distilled White Vinegar applied with a 2-gallon pump sprayer. Yes, your car will smell like a salad for a few days, but the Vinigar smell does ventually dissipate taking away ALL the bad odors with it. Spray the Distilled White Vinegar on all surfaces (except electrical), and use a very soft bristle brush to scrub surface areas clean. Don’t be afraid to soak your headliner, carpets (I replaced my very old floor carpet for new as noted) and seats (Vinyl) – I haven’t tried cloth or leather seats yet so experiment in a small non-conspicuous area first. I actually removed all my seats and soaked the cushions from underneath with ALOT of Distilled White Vinegar from the pump sprayer. Odor Problem solved.

“air duct cleaning methods _what is air duct cleaning services”

Bee’s Air Duct Cleaning is a family owned and operated duct cleaning company serving Metro Denver and Northern Colorado. Bee’s very first job in the HVAC industry was as an air duct cleaner. Bee’s air duct clean Denver realized that his job was not really to clean the duct work, it was to sell additional services.  He quickly moved up and spent more than a decade as an HVAC technician repairing and replacing furnaces and air conditioners. He noticed a big push to replace systems instead of maintain them. This is how Bee’s Air Duct Cleaning was born. Bee and the rest of us at Bee’s air duct cleaning believe in taking care of the furnace and air conditioner you have, so it runs as efficiently as possible and last a long long time.
The fogger is placed in the air conditioner’s intake with the system’s fan running to sanitize the entire system and to inhibit the future microbiological growth by utilizing a natural disinfectant that is harmless to occupants.
Contaminants: If noticeable debris, pet hair, odors, or other contaminants are being released into the room through the ducts after the registers have been cleaned and vacuumed; then the ducts may need to be cleaned.
Although there is no standard measurement for the effectiveness of gas-phase air filters, ASHRAE is developing a standard method to be used in choosing gas-phase filters installed in home HVAC systems. Gas-phase filters are much less commonly used in homes than particle air filters. The useful lifetime of gas-phase filters can be short because the filter material can quickly become overloaded and may need to be replaced often. There is also concern that, when full, these filters may release trapped pollutants back into the air. Finally, a properly designed and built gas-phase filtration system would be unlikely to fit in a typical home HVAC system or portable air cleaner.
Like I’d mentioned in the hub, this isn’t a professional duct cleaning. One might pay $300 – $700 for a professional cleaning. For someone who doesn’t have that kind of money for this type of service, they can do it themselves and achieve nearly 85% of the success. Knowing that people don’t have the equipment or ability to disconnect the entire duct system as a service might do, this is a great alternative. As for the fan, since we don’t have a truck mount unit that pulls the CFM as they clean, you need something to move the loose dust down to the filter. Since you banged on the duct, the dust would just sit there and you wouldn’t be able to get to it. This is why you wrap the registers with the paper towel though most of the dust is being pulled back to the blower as opposed to push out of the vent.
Some air cleaning devices are designed to be installed in the ductwork of a home’s central heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system to clean the air in the whole house. Portable room air cleaners can be used to clean the air in a single room or specific areas, but they are not intended for whole-house filtration. The following pages will provide information on different types of air cleaning devices and how they work.
He proceeded to clean each heat register by removing the grille and blasting it with an air pressure hose toward the duct opening thinking that the dust would magically be sucked inside. In one room this caused a ceiling smoke detector to go off because the excess dust fooled it into thinking there was smoke. I put my hand in front of a register he wasn’t working on and could hardly feel a suction. Although we discussed how I open and close damper doors, I realized later that he never checked, opened or adjusted them during the cleaning. He could have closed all but the one he was working on in order to increase suction results. His next step was to blast air into the duct and then attach a “squid-like” device that slapped around inside the duct as far as he could reach. This is important! In a newer house, ducts have long straight runs from the furnace. In older houses like mine they can turn and twist. In fact, the duct we have a problem with runs straight up from the basement inside a wall and turns 90 degrees into a soffit for three feet then into two 90 degree turns to get into the floor joist area for another two feet and finally a 90 degree turn up to the second floor register. When he cleaned this one he could only get three feet into the register with the hose or squid because of the turns. That was the case with most. Hardly what could be described as a decent cleaning.
Most people are now aware that indoor air pollution is an issue of growing concern and increased visibility. Many companies are marketing products and services intended to improve the quality of your indoor air. You have probably seen an advertisement, received a coupon in the mail, or been approached directly by a company offering to clean your air ducts as a means of improving your home’s indoor air quality. These services typically — but not always — range in cost from $450 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system, depending on:
5. Dirt and dust spread quicker in a home with dirty ducts. No matter how diligent you may dust and clean your home, fine particulate contaminates, including dangerous allergens, quickly flow from room to room to cover tables, smart phones, and children’s toys.
If any of the conditions identified above exists, it usually suggests one or more underlying causes. Prior to any cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing of your ducts, the cause or causes must be corrected or else the problem will likely recur.
http://davewirth.blogspot.com/2014/01… There are several video’s on youtube of companies that clean air heating vents, but there are none that show how you can clean them yourself. This is a video i made when i decided to try and clean my air ducts by myself. I used a shop vac and a leaf blower to do the entire job.

Over time, the pad upon which the condenser unit sits can begin to tip as the soil settles beneath it. An out-of-level condenser unit can cause the compressor within to fail early. Check the condenser for level and use rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level. Service Experts’ Moody adds this exception: “If you have a heat pump system, it’s okay for the pad to be slightly sloped away from the home’s foundation to allow for defrost run-off during the winter.”
After damage to your HVAC system due to fire or flooding, you shouldn’t really be relying on a duct cleaning company to handle this.  Instead, do some research for your area and hire a reputable HVAC contractor.  It should be an experienced air conditioning technician that evaluates your ductwork after fire or flood who can then replace duct segments if necessary.

Air duct cleaning service providers may tell you that they need to apply chemical biocide to the inside of your ducts as a means to kill bacteria (germs) and fungi (mold) and prevent future biological growth. They may also propose the application of a “sealant” to prevent dust and dirt particles from being released into the air or to seal air leaks. You should fully understand the pros and cons of permitting application of chemical biocides or sealants. While the targeted use of chemical biocides and sealants may be appropriate under specific circumstances, research has not demonstrated their effectiveness in duct cleaning or their potential adverse health effects. No chemical biocides are currently registered by EPA for use in internally-insulated air duct systems (see Should chemical biocides be applied to the inside of air ducts?).

Some residential HVAC systems may not have enough fan or motor capacity to accommodate higher efficiency filters. Therefore, the HVAC manufacturer’s information should be checked prior to upgrading filters to determine whether it is feasible to use more efficient filters. Specially built high performance homes may occasionally be equipped with true HEPA filters installed in a properly designed HVAC system.
High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters were invented during World War II as a way to prevent radioactive particles from escaping laboratories. The filters are made of various synthetic fibers; there is no construction standard because the term merely designates an efficiency rating: the ability to block 99.97 percent of all particles 0.3 micron or larger. (A micron is a millionth of a meter, or .000039 inch; the naked eye can’t see anything smaller than about 25 microns.) That rating is for laboratory conditions, however. Experts say that at home you can realistically expect a HEPA filter to grab about 80 percent of such particles.
Thanks bleedercleaners. Yes and the good news is, in a new home, if you clean the ducts really well right after the home is built, you will cut down on much of the dust forever. Unfortunately, in a new home, the drywall and sawdust often gets into and is swept into the heat vents. Get it now and it can help a lot.
Hi all, please clean you ducts there is to much dust everywhere, and people with allergies will suffer the most, We live in homes that are full of dust everything produces dust, well not everything but paper carpet furniture etc.. the data speaks for itself. Terry AZ
There are different ways to measure how well air cleaning devices work, which depend on the type of device and the basic configuration. Air cleaning devices are configured either in the ductwork of HVAC systems (i.e., in-duct) or as portable air cleaners.
This step is completed with the removal of the furnace panels and cleaning of the blower fan, combustion chamber, electric motor and cabinet. We use vacuum and compressed air. The furnace is inspected to make sure everything is running efficient and safely.
The most important part of keeping dust and mold out of your AC ducts is to use a high quality air filter.  I’m not talking about the cheap, see-through filters that are used in most apartments and homes, I mean the more expensive 3M filters available at Lowes and other hardware stores.  They aren’t that expensive, usually run around $15 each and will keep dust, allergens and debris out of your HVAC system all together.  For more on how to choose the right air conditioning filter, look at: Air Conditioning Filter – How Dust and Debris can Affect Your Air Conditioner.

I have a problem with most of these statements which I will discuss in more detail in the next section, but of the above reasons to clean your ducts I would have to say that there is only one that I would take seriously: Prior to occupancy of a new home.  Everything else will be addressed in our next section.
1. Dirt and dust restrict your HVAC system’s heating and cooling. In the winter, dirt-clogged heat exchangers cannot warm the air as efficiently. In the summer, dirt-clogged condensing coils are unable to cool the air as well. These both increase the HVAC systems run time, requiring it to use more fuel and energy to heat and cool your home.

Jeremy – I allow all comments. Particularly ones like this because it gives me the opportunity to educate people. First off, if you really read the article, I clearly state this is a pretty good way to go if you don’t have the money for professionals. I’m guessing you’re a duct cleaner and don’t want me showing people a nice alternative that will save them money and improve their air quality far more than doing nothing. My articles are not aimed to help or hurt anyone’s business…only to help people who can’t afford such services to do the best they can to help themselves enjoy these luxuries when it’s within their ability to do so. I stand by every word in this article. With over 20 years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running large commercial projects and everything in between, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading…or kind of anyway.
Anyone who works on HVAC systems needs to be licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. According to the EPA, Texas is one of the handful of states that require air duct cleaners to hold a special license.
Hi I clean air ducts cleaning in Wichita,KS and it’s true you get what you paid for… and I’m sorry I have to pay for my own gas, if my vehicle breaks down, I have to pay for it… I’m sorry I only get paid comission, I do have to eat, sleep, wash my clothes, but if you buy a coupon and you just wanna do the basic, that’s fine. Like the old saying goes “time is money!!” It’s the sad truth. But of you do spend some extra money believe me I will do my very best to make sure your happy. Every single thing I have read are negative what about the positive, I am a person that takes GREAT PRIDE in what I do.
Air duct cleaning service providers may tell you that they need to apply a chemical biocide to the inside of your ducts to kill bacteria (germs) and fungi (mold), and prevent future biological growth. Some duct cleaning service providers may propose to introduce ozone to kill biological contaminants. Ozone is a highly reactive gas that is regulated in the outside air as a lung irritant. However, there remains considerable controversy over the necessity and wisdom of introducing chemical biocides or ozone into the duct work.
The A/C System Cleaning and restoration industry has become a very lucrative bait and switch industry that many Carpet cleaning companies, Maid services, as well as plumbing or handyman service companies are adding on to there services. These add-ons are not fully certified, trained or even have any experience in the HVAC industry. These companies are the reason prices and quality of work are all over the place. If you are looking to make a smart decision for your home a professional Duct Cleaning service will protect you for 5-7 years. This info comes from NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association) which is the closest thing to a license we have for duct cleaning. They have a great site that explains this process and pricing much more in depth and factual than what has been written here. This organization is working very hard to get these bad companies exposed and out of this industry. So in saying that do your research! Green Duct Decontamination is a certified company with certified technicians that take this work very seriously. We can not have these low rated unprofessional companies paste a bad name for an entire industry. Stay away from anything under 250$ for a full duct clean this is not feasible, go look at NADCA.com and you will understand why and what these companies are doing to rob you of your dollar.
You have covered all necessary points on your blog. Dirty ducts blow dust, lint and other debris into every room of your home but sometimes you have to call professional for all duct cleaning services.
Venice warns homeowners to beware of air duct cleaning scams, especially the sort where unscrupulous cleaners offer a $49 special deal but start piling on extra fees. “It’s a bait and switch scam where they say they’ll offer unlimited cleaning, but then they throw around terms you might not understand, such as extra fees for a ‘main duct line,’” he says. “And many times, these cleaners end up walking out the door with twice the amount of money a reputable duct cleaner would charge. They’ve gotten very sophisticated at upselling.”
I did the $49.00 Groupon they just left. Basiclly all they did was stick a shop vac type hose into the vent supply and one return. I also had the dryer done. the person in charge pointed to the main return inside my humidifier and said it needed cleaning

Benefect is an all-natural, non-toxic, chemical-free, organic sanitizer that can be fogged into your air duct system to help prevent bacterial build up from various toxins that come in contact with you and your family on a daily basis.
Flat or panel air filters with a MERV of 1 to 4 are commonly used in residential furnaces and air conditioners. For the most part, such filters are used to protect the HVAC equipment from the buildup of unwanted materials on the surfaces such as fan motors and heating or cooling coils, and not for direct indoor air quality reasons. They have low efficiency on smaller airborne particles and medium efficiency on larger particles, as long as they remain airborne and pass through the filter.

People worried primarily about germs can consider an ultraviolet filter. Typically, UV filters are built-in components, sold as add-ons to a whole-house electronic precipitator (as in, add on $400 to $800). The ultraviolet light zaps airborne bacteria and viruses into oblivion, which is why hospitals use UV air filters in tuberculosis wards. Of course, the bug has to reach the filter before it can be zapped; if someone sneezes in your face, UV technology won’t help.
A family owned and operated company, Armstrong Hearth and Home has been a leading provider of air duct cleaning services since 1965. We are a National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) member company and follow NADCA’s stringent cleaning standards. We use NADCA’s recommended source removal technique that utilizes large negative air machines, mechanical brushes, and compressed air tools to clean air duct systems. Our process does not include chemicals, disinfectants, and masking of fragrances because there is no need with this thorough cleaning method.
HVAC duct cleaning is as much a scam as fuel injector cleaning in automobiles. There is no discernible improvement in quality from either except it makes money for the people who sell you the service. Just use quality filters and change often, and use quality gas (Shell, Chevron) and you will do just fine.

7.         All supply vents are air-washed (at 180 psi) and mechanically brushed, depending on the duct construction type and contamination. These tools are all remote-reaching, much like a plumber’s snake, and are ½” in diameter. Their use results in all contamination inside the vent and its duct work being moved into the main trunk duct line (the larger ductwork) where the vacuum is connected. Although the vacuum power is substantial, no harm is done to your duct system. Once this individual vent finished, we apply duct mask and move to the next vent opening. Unless your system provides limited access, we do not vacuum up from each vent, as it is impossible to put a smaller diameter vacuum hose down a branch line and correctly clean through any vent opening. This is, however, something you can do with your store-bought HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner.
