**Do they clean the Air Handler Unit or Furnace? The most important part of your HVAC system is the Air Handler Unit. Will the company you call clean the air handler unit? (Blower, coils, insulation, drainpan)?
The most important thing to know about achieving improved indoor air quality through Air Duct and HVAC cleaning is that there are no different levels of cleaning services. Anything less than complete cleaning of all various heating & cooling components of an air systems, Usual components are: the air ducts, registers, diffusers, grills, heat exchangers, coils, fan motor and housing and removal of all contaminants is unacceptable, and could leave you with more issues than you had before the cleaning. If improper equipment or procedures are used, contractors could make dormant contamination airborne and fail to collect all of it. If this happens, the next time your system is re-energized all that contamination could potentially go into the living space.
The most appealing argument that can be made is that cleaning your central air conditioning ductwork gives you peace of mind.  Think about it, you have no idea what is hidden in the depths of your AC ducts so it can be comforting to know that a professional has inspected them and taken a good look inside.  If you do decide to take this route, take some time to research your local contractors and only choose a reputable duct cleaner.  For more tips on how to choose an HVAC contractor, take a look at: How to Choose a Contractor: 5 HVAC Tips You Must Know.  Here are some possible advantages to having your AC ducts cleaned:
Air duct cleaning services have sparked a bit of controversy in the world of heating, cooling, and ventilation. Thanks to some illegitimate duct cleaners, this industry has been given a bad reputation for dishonesty and deception. Four Seasons has sought to change all that by offering air duct cleaning services that are not only honest and up-front in every respect but that are also helpful in improving the home’s indoor air quality. Contact Four Seasons today to experience the Four Seasons difference and to schedule your free estimate!
However, both EPA and the National Air Duct Cleaners Association — which represents more than 1,000 cleaning companies nationwide — agree there’s some benefit in cleaning debris from ducts, furnaces, central air conditioners and ventilation.
I’m a heating and air conditioning contractor. I’ve been in the trade for over 15 years. I’ve witnessed numerous duct cleaning projects and talked with many duct cleaners. Duct cleaning as it’s usually promoted is a fraud. Most duct cleaners claim to deliver cleaner air. They deliver exactly the opposite. The studies on duct cleaning prove it, including a May 1998 study sponsored by NADCA and the EPA! The stories are compelling, but they can come up with stories that “prove” anything they want. Internet searches are dominated by results from those who are paid to tell you that duct cleaning is worthwhile. Search a little more and you’ll find the truth.
Commercial systems are often customized to fit the building they serve. They are almost guaranteed to feature added components, and will need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The more difficult the construction is to maneuver, the more you can expect to pay.
I am in need of HVAC ADVICE!! I need a new furnace badly, mine is cracked. I have bought both a 95 % AFUE furnace and a 5 Ton evap coil, I figured it should all be replaced at once for both cost and efficency. My question is with all the negaitive things I have heard about companies ripping you off, what type of price should I pay someone for putting in those two items and bringing everything in my attic up to code? have been quoted $550 – $ 3300. Wide margin here!! Then of course comes the licencing part!! I know in my heart that I should use a licenced contractor but I have had such bad luck and prices from them that honestly one that was licened in Ga. and just not here in TN and is a tech. which charges 1100 – 2200 less sounds good as so long as I pay some type of Profenial HVAC person say $100 to inspect the work after its done and before I pay them.
My hardwood floors are always dirty. Would air duct cleaning help all that much. I have 3 cats and 1 small dog and family always is in and out a lot. No one leaves shoes at door. When I look at my floors at night with a flashlight dirt is everywhere. So I guess our family home is full of dirt all the time because of these habits. I vacuum but it is always dirty. What do you think is best solution?
I can’t believe I got ripped off by this Air Duct Cleaners. I called them for this $63 coupon per furnace unlimited vents then when they came after he checked it all I hear is I have molds and leak all is worth $499, $799, $899 per furnace but I told him to just clean the duct and patch the single leak per furnace worth $38 each. Still eanding $899 total. All the work he done is in less than an hour he didnt even go to each vent to clean it. All he did is to path the air leak on that entry pipe to the furnace and open the main venting system, vacuum it, and wash the floor of the vent with a solution. Overall time is about 20 mins talking with me discussing all the option which thinking they made me think I don’t really have an option and 40 mins wash and vacuum he took pictures of before and after of only one furnace. He gave me a receipt without the details on what he has done in the house just the name and price. I think we may need a strict law to punish and control all this companies who do this so other company who do good will despise them.
1. Ducts need cleaning mostly because they were not installed properly. There should be regulatory inpection and approval of clean and proper duct works on new houses. I was extremely unpset when I looked and found significant amounts of construction dust in parts of the ducts in my new house. There is apparently no way to hold the bullder to be responsible for clean ducts.
The benefits of air duct cleaning run the gamut from health-related to financial. Your furnace and ductwork serve as your home’s respiratory system, pulling air from inside your home through the return ducts, where the air moves through the air filter into the furnace to be heated before passing through the supply ducts and back into your living space. Dust, pet dander, debris, pathogens, allergens, chemicals, dust mites—all of these contaminants become trapped inside your air ducts over time, and as the air moves through the system, it passes through these dirty ducts, redistributing the dirt throughout your home or simply depositing it in the ducts where it builds up over time. Air duct cleaning can dramatically reduce the number of contaminants present in your home’s indoor air.

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years. Ed Mack, owner of Air Duct Professionals in Lake Elsinore, says homeowners should consider doing it every two to five years, depending on their circumstances.
We are pleased to announce that we now represent another world leader in industrial air products, Nederman, the newest addition to our line, but not to the industry. Nederman has a long history and a solid track record as a leader in the environmental technology sector.
Although most famous for Michigan carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning services, Modernistic has become an icon in the air duct cleaning industry thanks to our highly trained, NADCA certified technicians and our state-of-the-art cleaning process.
Little research has been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of most biocides and ozone when used inside ducts. Simply spraying or otherwise introducing these materials into the operating duct system may cause much of the material to be transported through the system and released into other areas of your home.
Nothing. Your technician was very polite and helpful. Incidentally, I called Sears rather than one of the many duct cleaners that advertise because I felt I would have someone I could trust to be in my home.
I have been an Indoor Air Quality Investigator and HVAC abatement contractor for 32 years. These so called “duct cleaners”, in many cases, are scam artists at best, and some ,(in my opinion), should go to jail.
I have a white gritty dust throughout my whole house. Dust and it comes right back. We have central air. In 2013 had all the air conditioning tubing in the attic replaced. Old ones were completely clean. Why?? Thought dust would be in there. Put everything in plastic containers. Furniture everything is always covered with this. Problem is always there year round. Furnace people said it is not coming from furnace. We built house in 1971. Only started with this @ 19 years ago. Thinking when air conditioning went in. We cough all the time and sneeze. I do not have friends come here because I hate how dirty my house looks.
I’m new to this taking care of my sister home until she get better,So I want to do good job and take of her home.My is helping out and the room she’s in is very hot while the rest of the house cool it’s not fair to her.
The key to the continued and efficient operation of your heating and cooling system is periodic maintenance. Cleaning the air duct vent system, and servicing you heating and cooling equipment will keep the system operating at its peak performance. Air ducts are cleaned for two reasons. One: to prevent debris from entering furnace and air conditioning components. Two: to prevent debris from cycling through the home. The air duct cleaning contractor needs to employ cleaning methods which successfully removes debris, and ensures that debris does not enter the occupied space. Most contractors can verify the results of the cleaning through video or pictures.
The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.

Cover your outdoor unit in winter with plywood (Photo 1) to prevent damage from falling ice. Don’t wrap it with plastic or any other material that completely blocks airflow. Moisture that’s trapped inside will promote corrosion.
Bought Amazon Groupon deal for $29. Guy walks in and estimated $900 for all air duct and dryer vent. Then comes down to $600 with free dryer vent. I refuse, he calls office and deal is now $250. I still dont want and his final deal is Ducts and all returns for $100. However, no Brush cleaning, no tapes on vents, no HVAC blower clean up.
“Honesty is everything with these people. They checked all the vents connected to my dryers and said I didn’t need any cleaning of the ducts since they were all clean. Two other companies gave me price per vent without looking at the job. The gutter maintence earned my future business through honesty”
The majority of good air duct cleaning companies use outdoor vented equipment, so all of the dust and debris they capture is vented and contained outside the home. A duct cleaner who uses inferior equipment can actually cause more harm by agitating and releasing more dust into your home, or worse, damaging your ductwork.
Kristal – I’m sorry but there are so many duct systems it would be hard for me to help without more info. If your ducts are cased drywall it would be very difficult to access without special equipment.

“air duct cleaning and sealing will air duct cleaning help allergies”

Excellent Job by Mr. Duct: Furnace Cleaning. Very easy to set up an appointment. They were right on time. The technician, Brain was very polite and professional. Job well done and very cooperative. I highly recommend Mr. Duct. They followed up on the service the next day, which was great. Over all excellent service.
The Environmental Protection Agency claims that indoor air has been found to be up to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. Now consider, that most people spend between 60% to 90% of their time indoors…the facts can be quite alarming.
Our trained technicians provide speedy, efficient services that go above and beyond what you expect from HVAC cleaning and duct sealing services. Your Mr. Duct Cleaner team will arrive on time, adhere to the estimate we provide, and leave behind a clean work area.
Unfortunately, I’m in the same boat and all you can really do is keep cleaning. A duct cleaning can’t hurt and I also run the fan on my furnace around 340 days a year which keeps air moving through my filter thus catching more of the dust and hair (and of course meaning I change my filter a bit more often than most) but that is about all you can do. A duct cleaning won’t really do much for the ongoing shedding and dust our kids create.
I’m new to this taking care of my sister home until she get better,So I want to do good job and take of her home.My is helping out and the room she’s in is very hot while the rest of the house cool it’s not fair to her.
Excessive Dust: Excess dust and debris built up in the ductwork could cause your home to become dustier. Ask your contractor to use a camera to check inside the ductwork for this problem and show you the evidence before they begin to clean.
Make sure ducts are properly sealed and insulated in all non-air-conditioned spaces (e.g., attics and crawl spaces). This will help to prevent moisture due to condensation from entering the system and is important to make the system work as intended. To prevent water condensation, the heating and cooling system must be properly insulated.

Hi, my home office a/c vent has been blowing out blackish granular particles. It only happens with this particular vent. I’ve read lighting candles tend to do something like this… I do light candles every day. Can someone help me with what I should do? Thanks.
Cleaning your ductwork isn’t necessary if you use AC filters.  In fact, my problem with professional duct cleaning that it is kind of a made-up industry, and I would instead argue that if you maintain proper air conditioning maintenance and sanitation, then it is completely unnecessary.  If your ducts have mold in them or so much dust that they need to be cleaned, then there is likely a larger problem that needs to addressed.

NADCA experts argue the need for cleaning depends on a variety of factors, including pets, smoking, recent renovations, local weather conditions and overall home cleanliness. Vinick says a good contractor will offer to do an inspection beforehand for a nominal charge, if any, to see if a cleaning is necessary.
I hope that those customers you have with breathing problems don’t follow your advice too closely. You are doing them a disservice. Dirt in your ducts does not always stay there, depending on what the contaminants are. I bet you tell your customers not to worry about mold either- just to kill it with bleach. Educate yourself before opening your mouth- You may kill someone someday with your opinion.
“Jeff and a partner (forgive me, I forgot his name) were very helpful, friendly, clean, and fast. They explained everything to me, how its done, showed me the equipment they use, used nontoxic chemicals, and gave our AC vents and ducts a thorough cleaning. The air smells great! They also gave me an estimate for tile cleaning service which I really appreciated. ”
When we bought our house we found a lot of debris including soda cans had fallen in the floor ducts which we found without grills. I have no doubt there is ample construction dust, moldering pet fur and perhaps a few mummified rodents in our ducts.
The most important maintenance steps are fairly simple, but if this is the first time you’ve cleaned the unit, allow about a half day to carefully work through the steps. If you’re not up to the task, call a pro (look under “Air Conditioning Contractors” in your Yellow Pages). Cleaning and servicing a central air conditioner costs $100 to $250.
This is to Blueberry who.wrote.about home rental dust problems on 12/ 06/2016. Tell your landlord your.calling City Health Inspector if he doesn’t fix.the problems.
Jeremy – I allow all comments. Particularly ones like this because it gives me the opportunity to educate people. First off, if you really read the article, I clearly state this is a pretty good way to go if you don’t have the money for professionals. I’m guessing you’re a duct cleaner and don’t want me showing people a nice alternative that will save them money and improve their air quality far more than doing nothing. My articles are not aimed to help or hurt anyone’s business…only to help people who can’t afford such services to do the best they can to help themselves enjoy these luxuries when it’s within their ability to do so. I stand by every word in this article. With over 20 years in HVAC from loading trucks to currently running large commercial projects and everything in between, I think the professionals are already on it. Thanks for reading…or kind of anyway.
However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.
Very useful. You’re right about the cost. we paid close to a thousand for a professional cleaning last time. I forwarded your hub to my husband who is responsible for those type of work. Hopefully, this will save us some money. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Sears two-step, hot water extraction process, and our specially formulated cleaning solutions and fiber rinse are unlike most other carpet & upholstery cleaners. With the steam cleaning process, warm/hot water is used to loosen dirt embedded deep in the carpet fibers then it is quickly extracted with powerful vacuum equipment. Our second step, the Fiber Rinse, insures that we have removed the most dirt and cleaning solution (residue) from your carpet so it will be soft, fresh and stay cleaner longer.
I to had an odd layer of white’ish dust building up especially during seasonal periods when the HVAC ran a a lot. I carefully swept up the fine dust into a small pile and had it analyzed. Turns out it was very fine fiberglass powder dust. It turns out it is the insulation form the attic! (My has blown in insulation). Turns out if you (I) had small gaps around my HVAC registers in the ceiling whee the airs blows into the room. What occurred in my case was that the exiting air at that seam creates a vacuum effect at the grate vent cover and draws and then blows fine insulation dust from the attic into the house. Removing each register grate and sealing each tin outlet gap with calking between the dry wall ceiling and tin fixed the issue. A couple were so bad with bowed gaps I had to screw down the bowed tin to the attaching stud better. Checking the very same glass top desk that catches and shows any dust accumulation now shows only very small amounts of normal house dust build up over several weeks. A big, big improvement. You might have a look by simply removing a couple vent covers yourself.

Your HVAC unit and air ducts deliver heated or cooled air throughout your home year-in and year-out. The air your HVAC unit produces travels through your air ducts and heats or cools your home through the air vents in each room. The EPA defines the dust and other particles in your home’s air as particulate matter, “a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets.” The EPA also notes that, “Particle pollution is made up of a number of components, including acids (such as nitrates and sulfates), organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particle.” 2 If you remove your furnace filter and hold it up to the light, you can probably see several hundred of these minuscule particles floating in the air.
Just had my air ducts cleaned. They used a high pressure air hose in all the heat ducts and cold air returns. He showed me the stuff that came out, the reason for the duct cleaning was the fact that I had a problem. With rodents. There was quite a few mummified rats and mice, and he said I wouldn’t have to have them done again unless I incur another problem or have renovations done. Cost me 345.00 for a 2 storey large old home. Not a bad price as I had them done when I moved in 28 years ago and it cost me 500.00. Lots of dog hair, toys, balls and assorted goodies came out as well. Took them 2 hours. I did have sanitizer put in the ducts because of the dead rodents.
We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)
6-Shake off any excess water and lay vents out to dry on a towel for a few minutes. They don’t have to be perfectly dry when you put them back in their spots because once you turn your furnace on again, that warm air coming through will help dry up any remaining water.
Most experts, including the EPA, have not endorsed air duct cleaning as a remedy for health issues, but cleaners say they’ve amassed a growing body of anecdotal evidence that it does provide some benefit.
I just moved into a 1200 sq ft townhouse. Within 2 hours there’s a film on my glasses. It is high humidity and high Temps outside so I have the ac on. I think there’s a lot of dust, but I don’t think there’s mold, although there is a strange smell in here. What do you suggest?
The next step was cleaning the cold air returns. He found a good spot to drill an 8” hole for his vacuum hose. The procedure matched the other air ducts except that when he finished at the two cold return registers he drilled several holes in the cold ducts in the basement and blasted air into them. Because of our houses age and the upgraded return system, I noticed that the main sheet metal return duct had no top but was just butted up against the ceiling in the basement. When he blasted air in, dust and crap shot out the edges along the ceiling. Once he finished that he removed the filter and “swept” out anything at the bottom of the return with his hand into the 8” hose.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the service from this company. The crew arrived on time and were very polite and professional. Pricing was competitive compared to the other vent cleaning companies I researched. I will certainly use them again in the future and will recommend them to my family and friends.
I hired duct cleaning company out of “Service Magic” website. I did not realize the name of his company was Duck cleaning of Central Florida…that should have given me a hint.. The guy did a very poor, incomplete job, and ruined a closet full of clothes when he sprayed up to clean a vent instead of taking it down and cleaning it outside. He left me with more than 1/2 dirty vents and ducts, did not do the air handler in the garage and failed to fog the system. He spent 6 useless hours at my residence and now his insurance is denying coverage..very disappointed in Service Magic….

The efficacy (or lack thereof) of duct cleaning can be settled with one key fact. Settled dust within a duct requires air speeds in excess of 160mph to reenter the air stream. This has been clearly demonstrated in studies. Of course, no furnace system in the world reaches anything close to 160mph.

Compared to using a duster or changing out air filters, professional duct cleaning means going through all the many elements of the HVAC system. This includes, but is not limited to, the supply and return air ducts, grilles, diffusers, exchangers, heating & cooling coils, drip pans, fans and the air handling unit. Keeping these maintained means avoid problems like pollen, mold or overt dust buildup. This is definitely a problem you want to avoid.
This is my 2nd time using Mr. Duct and they are my go-to for spring A/C cleaning as well as fall furnace servicing/cleaning. Always on time, friendly and knowledgeable technicians. Reliable and trusted service.

Thanks to everybody who left comments here, especially Krunk and Shania. I have been offered a position in an HVAC company and after reading the above comments, my decision is to apologize. I’m not going to be a “professional con”!
Dear D.C.: My advice is simple: avoid those lowball offers. Companies offering a super low price on air duct cleaning might do more harm and no good. The fact of the matter is this: the average air duct cleaning for most homes costs between $300 and $500, with the price affected by factors like the size of the home, the number of ducts and their configuration. The average price for air duct cleaning is $35 per vent. So if your home has a total of 10 vents, the total would be $350.
The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.
Most organizations concerned with duct cleaning, including EPA, NADCA, NAIMA and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) do not currently recommend the routine use of sealants to encapsulate contaminants in any type of duct. Instances when the use of sealants to encapsulate the duct surfaces may be appropriate include the repair of damaged fiber glass insulation or when combating fire damage within ducts. Sealants should never be used on wet duct liner, to cover actively growing mold, or to cover debris in the ducts, and should only be applied after cleaning according to NADCA or other appropriate guidelines or standards.
**Do they clean the Air Handler Unit or Furnace? The most important part of your HVAC system is the Air Handler Unit. Will the company you call clean the air handler unit? (Blower, coils, insulation, drainpan)?
Over time, the pad upon which the condenser unit sits can begin to tip as the soil settles beneath it. An out-of-level condenser unit can cause the compressor within to fail early. Check the condenser for level and use rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level. Service Experts’ Moody adds this exception: “If you have a heat pump system, it’s okay for the pad to be slightly sloped away from the home’s foundation to allow for defrost run-off during the winter.”
Helpful information. Thanks. I wanted to add, I cut a good length from an old garden hose, inserted inside my vacuum hose and duct taped it. It extended the reach further in a tight space. Pulled out a gruesome amount of dog hair. Thanks again.
Duct cleaning, when done properly, can reduce your family and pet’s exposure to indoor air pollutants, allergens, and airborne illness, as well as lower your energy bill through increased HVAC efficiency.
In my opinion, you should never get to the point where a duct cleaning is necessary, and it is completely preventable.  Instead, you should rely on preventative maintenance to ensure the health and welfare of you and your family.  In other words, treat the causes, not the symptoms!  Here are some tips to keep your air conditioning system running cleanly and efficiently:
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been shown to act as a collection source for a variety of contaminants that have the potential to affect health, such as mold, fungi, bacteria, and very small particles of dust. The removal of such contaminants from the HVAC system and home should be considered as one component in an overall plan to improve indoor air quality.
in response to this reply ” should your ducts be cleaned”, i have to politely correct the person who answered this. you are not using common sense. first, most of the country uses metal duct work, so for you to say what you did, is wrong. second, the duct system in a house is a circulatory system. that means it draws air into the furnace, it gets filtered, and then it is blown out into the house to heat or cool. So, obviously that air is being brought into the house from somewhere right? Yes, its coming from the outside where there are many allergens and dust particles . For you to says that about whether a duct system is sealed or not, makes no difference. The air is coming from somewhere right? It has to originate from somewhere right? Just look on top of your cieling fan. If there is a bunch of dust up there, then there is obviously a bunch in your ducts. And the duct air is being circulated every day, and every hour through your house. Its simple, dust collects everywhere in your house. Imagine if you never dusted your shelves, or tv? There would be a ton of dust after a while. Well, now think about the air in the duct system. Of course theres gonna be a ton of dust in there. For you to say that it is not benififcial to clean the ducts, is plain ignorant. 90% of the air we breathe is in our household. Wouldnt you want that air to be as dust and allergen free? I could go on for hours about the benifits of duct cleaning, but i just wanted to make a quick point that the person whose says it is not benificial to clean them, is not using common sense. Not to mention, giving the people who clean ducts for a living, a bad name. Use your head .
Ductwork cleaning involves more components than just the ducts themselves. The air conditioning unit and/or furnace must be addressed during the task. Maintaining these components is key to improving efficiency. The following are average costs of cleaning the various kinds of AC and furnace units.
You should be aware that although a substance may look like mold, a positive determination of whether it is mold or not can be made only by an expert and may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation. For about $50, some microbiology laboratories can tell you whether a sample sent to them on a clear strip of sticky household tape is mold or simply a substance that resembles it.

The most absolute user-friendly, well thought out and designed tool in our arsenal for air duct cleaning. Whether it’s flex duct, sheet metal full of screws and sharp edges, round, square or rectangular ducting, the Rotobrush “Brush Beast” with it’s powerful vacuum coupled with the bi-directional ability to reach and agitate the interior of the ducting at the point of contact makes it the most capable system for residential or commercial air duct cleaning. The best part from a business standpoint is the equipment pays for itself and so much more. We don’t just say we are cleaning the ducts-we really are!
If you ask most people to define HVAC, they’ll probably just point to the unit out behind their house or the big equipment on the roof of the neighboring office building. The average Joe doesn’t think beyond those visible pieces of the system or beyond “it’s what keeps us cool.” But the truth is that those HVAC and A/C units are just one part of an HVAC system. The other major component is the HVAC ducts running through the entire home or building. Think of the unit as the heart and the ducts as the arteries. It’s just as important to keep the arteries in good shape as it is the heart! This is why it’s crucial to hire duct cleaning services, and we think the best choice is to go with a dedicated duct cleaning company like Better Air.

As one of the duct cleaners that do it right it disgusts me to hear the horror stories some of my past customers have had with the companies using scare tactics, bait and switch schemes, and just plain intimidation to make a fast buck. The Ductz franchise as a whole has gone behind other “duct cleaners” in the last year to the tune of almost three-quarters of a million dollars. All of this expense could have been avoided had the customers been able to do some background research before hiring. NADCA is a great organization and should be a minimum requirement for finding a duct cleaner. Other great questions include “How long does the service take?” (2 techs, 4-5 hours for a small house, 7-9+ hours for a two system house), “Do you clean the entire system including all trunk lines and the air handler (blower motor and evaporator coil)?”, “How do you validate the job you have done?” (before and after picture reports work great). Beware of duct cleaners that say their process will solve all your air quality concerns. Duct cleaning is one of several steps to take to rid your home of unwanted dust, dirt, mold, and other allergens.
Colleyville- Located fewer than 30 miles from downtown, Colleyville offers proximity to the action along with a healthy dose of old-school charm. With its mature trees, renowned schools, and access to fantastic trails, restaurants, and shops, it’s not hard to see the appeal of living here. The home styles are varied, with price points that appeal to families and retirees. The combination of amenities placed Colleyville as Dallas Morning News’ second-best area to live in the region.
We needed the system cleaned fast since we were moving out of the home and knew the new homeowners were going to picky. Mr. Duct got in for the air duct cleaning the next day, worked efficiently and thoroughly, and left us with perfectly clean vents. They were great!
I have four kids and they have been constantly been getting sick. I had a lightbulb moment and thought maybe the air is causing this. We live in the desert and experience a lot of dust. I came across your page and cleaned them myself. Just want to say thank you!!!! I’m sure this will help my family so much!
“A good cleaner is going to use a negative air machine and a rotary brush cabling system,” Mack says. “The brush goes through the ducts and knocks the debris loose, and the negative air machine vacuums it away.”
Now it’s time to move inside. On the inside blower/furnace unit, find the evaporator coil door. You may need to remove some foil duct tape and take out a few screws or bolts. Inside, use a soft brush to dust off the coil, then spray the coil with commercially available no-rinse coil cleaner (available at home improvement stores). The spray will foam up and then drip into the drain pan. Clean out the drain pan with soap, hot water, and a little bleach. Then, pour a cup of 50% bleach/50% water down the drain. To keep the drain clear longer-term, place a commercially available drain pan tablet in the pan. This will inhibit future algae growth.
Al and I just wanted to take a minute to say that John and Frank were great! Very professional and very personable. Because of these two gentlemen I will only use your company for any duct needs. I hope your company knows that the two of them is what gives …
This article was very good. It should be noted that the EPA building in Washington, DC, was cited years ago as one of the worst “sick building syndrome” buildings. you had mentioned about having people’s dryer vents cleaned since they can cause so many fires in homes. Most homeowners forget to check the air flow on the dryer vent. Our company, which cleans by NADCA standards, does both air ducts and dryer vents. Thanks again for keeping the public informed, especially regarding the cost of air duct cleaning…you get what you pay for…don’t be fooled by the lowest cost out there. Frequently these are bait and switch companies or will keep adding on features they say a customer needs until the price is so high it’s ridiculous.
The blower fan and evaporation coil are cleaned in place. Even a thin layer of dust here can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. Also, the continual presence of moisture during the cooling season can lead to mold growth on the evaporation coils.
how effective is duct cleaning when i have skunk odor in my home, and will duct cleaning spew the smell right back into my home. I had my home sprayed by a skunk, or I may have a dead skunk deep inside my home somewhere that we can not get to
Since most states and municipalities don’t license air duct cleaners, you need to check their professional credentials instead, such as NADCA membership. EPA recommends all duct cleaners follow NADCA standards. Member companies must keep at least one technician on staff who has passed a NADCA test. “They have to pass rigorous testing to earn the certificate, and our code of ethics is very important,” Vinick says.
Pastor B – First, thank you for the kind words! The answer to the first 2 questions in a nutshell is yes. Running the fan however by itself is probably the better idea to dry the system a bit. That said, it isn’t a solution, just helps a bit. I would attempt to find the root of the problem and take care of that to end the issue. Adding things like air cleaner and UV light to the system can help long term with some of this but having the a/c coil cleaned and checked (the indoor evaporator coil) is a good start if you’ve not had that done before. If the smell is coming from the crawlspace and getting pulled into the air stream is the issue then sealing the ductwork with a mastic may also be a good measure and is something you can do yourself with a bucket of mastic, a paint brush, pair of rubber gloves and long sleeves….you don’t want to get it tangled up in your arm hair and such. It can be a difficult task to get out. 🙂 I hope this helps and thank you for reading!
Case Paine was extremely professinal, clean, & a personable human being. Explained the process of duct cleaning and throughly answered all of our questions. Surely appreciate you sending us one of your Managers to clean our ducts. Mr. Paine definitely represents your company very well.
Experts say research on the health benefits of residential duct cleaning is still in its infancy. Glenn Fellman, the Indoor Air Quality Association’s executive director, says that despite the lack of scientific data, he’s seen and heard much common-sense evidence of improved air quality.
Avoid Sealants and Sprays: Both the EPA and the NADCA recommend against the use of sprayed sealants or other potentially harmful chemicals inside air ducts. Biocides and anti-microbial treatments are also iffy, since the chemicals may cause more harm than good to your health. No chemicals are currently registered with the EPA for use inside ductwork.
A do-it-yourself approach will only scratch the surface because it is hard to reach some of the ventilation running underneath the floor or into the wall. Although it may help in clearing some of the dust and debris, you really need a professional to guarantee your system is truly spotless. The proper procedure involves the use of a powerful vacuum system with multi-brush attachments designed to loosen debris and feed into the suction. Particles are then blown outside of the house or passed through a HEPA filter inside.
NADCA recommends at a minimum that an owner, principal, or key employee of a company become a certified ASCS. This individual must be a fulltime employee, be directly responsible for project management and should oversee all air duct cleaning projects. There is no limit to the number of company representatives who can become certified.
I agree, if you replace (or wash depending on type) your air filters regularly AND vaccum, then you probably don’t need the ducts or air coils cleaned. However, if you purchase a pre-owned home, and the previous owners did not regularly change the air filter or vaccum the home, then duct cleaning is worth the expense especially if you are sensitive to allergens. Especially if the previous owners had pets.
A: There are 3 major parts to an air system: 1. The supply and return grills; 2. The interior surfaces of the supply and return vents; and 3. The furnace/air conditioner air handler. All 3 components must be cleaned. If only one or two of the components are cleaned, the contaminates from the 3rd component will rapidly contaminate the ones that were cleaned.
The comment that the EPA say’s there is no scientific evidence that regular air duct cleaning does not improve air quality is totally absurd. The EPA is WRONG and whoever wrote that article should be FIRED!
We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)
Since any reduction in air-flow through the fins can reduce efficiency, carefully straighten bent fins using a butter knife or commercially available fin-straightening tool. Be gentle so that the tubing embedded within the fins is not damaged.
The EPA does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only as needed — such as when mold, pests or excessive debris clutter the system. In an online poll, 13 percent of Angie’s List members said they have their ducts cleaned routinely, but 60 percent do so only if serious problems develop.

Typically, air filters are either built into the heating and cooling system (whole-house filters) or are freestanding units that can be placed in individual rooms (portable filters with self-contained fans).

“air duct cleaning experts |air duct cleaning is it necessary”

Air duct cleaning service providers may tell you that they need to apply chemical biocide to the inside of your ducts as a means to kill bacteria (germs) and fungi (mold) and prevent future biological growth. They may also propose the application of a “sealant” to prevent dust and dirt particles from being released into the air or to seal air leaks. You should fully understand the pros and cons of permitting application of chemical biocides or sealants. While the targeted use of chemical biocides and sealants may be appropriate under specific circumstances, research has not demonstrated their effectiveness in duct cleaning or their potential adverse health effects. No chemical biocides are currently registered by EPA for use in internally-insulated air duct systems (see Should chemical biocides be applied to the inside of air ducts?).

Kristal – I’m sorry but there are so many duct systems it would be hard for me to help without more info. If your ducts are cased in drywall it would be very difficult to access without special equipment.
On average, we (Indians in Ontario) receive 3-5 calls per day for duct cleaning services from India. I did get ducts cleaned twice in 25 years. For a newly built house, it should be done as material goes into the ducts. Every year, before turning the heat on, I clean the ducts, using the vacuum pipe or with wet towel. Most of the dust, pet hair, small items get to the ducts from the top floors, not where system is installed. Even in winter months, I open 2-3 windows for air circulation for 15 minutes, specially right after cooking, almost daily. We breath in the same stale air, develop health issues. Also, I have an added air cleaning and fileration system installed. At a low rate, this system constantly cleans the inside air and also that it pulls from the outside. Duct cleaning is a scam, there are other efficient and cost effective methods we can use to purify the inside air.
If the service provider charges by the hour, request an estimate of the number of hours or days the job will take, and find out whether there will be interruptions in the work. Make sure the duct cleaner you choose will provide a written agreement outlining the total cost and scope of the job before work begins.
“A good cleaner is going to use a negative air machine and a rotary brush cabling system,” Mack says. “The brush goes through the ducts and knocks the debris loose, and the negative air machine vacuums it away.”
Each day the air in your home is re-circulated through your home’s air duct system. Over time dust, dander, and debris builds up in your HVAC/Air Duct System making your furnace and air conditioner less efficient which can cost you more money to operate.
The EPA recommends having the air ducts cleaned only as needed[3] — that is, when there is substantial visible mold growth inside, if the ducts are infested with rodents or insects, or if they’re clogged with excessive amounts of debris.
5.         All registers are blocked using a special material called “duct mask.” One register at a time is left unblocked. This concentrates the suction applied at the main trunk line to one vent or “branch duct” at a time.
Prior to reading your article, I cleaned my ductwork with a shop vac and it worked really well. The next day I found a piece of ductwork in one of the floor registers. Not sure what to do about it. Any help is much appreciated.
I will have to wait and see if the the duct cleaning does make a difference. I would also prefer if the contact person explain in detail all the possibilities of what extra expenses or extra work might be recommended. I trusted the technicians’ knoledge, but did not know if all that was recommended was truly necessary.
Our Duct Cleaning Technicians can clean, repair and seal your air ducts. Cleaning your ducts can help to reduce allergens and airborne pollutants. You’ll breathe easier and enjoy more comfort after your air ducts have been professionally cleaned by Dalworth.
Knowledge about air duct cleaning is in its early stages, so a blanket recommendation cannot be offered as to whether you should have your air ducts in your home cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urges you to read this document in it entirety as it provides important information on the subject.
Routine, professional duct cleaning can reduce exposure to allergens, pollutants, and even airborne illness. As an added bonus, regular cleanings will also improve HVAC efficiency, reducing your energy bill.
What are the benefits of air duct cleaning? Eliminate pet hair, dander and mold due to water damage. Reduce allergies and contaminants caused by smoking, construction work or fungi. Improve your home life when you improve your indoor air quality.

“is air duct cleaning worth it |air duct cleaning apartment”

I have worked cleaning HVAC in my area for almost 5 years. I always do a thorough inspection and cleaning, providing before and after photos. I have completed some jobs where I felt that it was not entirely necessary, but ultimately what the customer wanted. With that being said, I have endless photos of unspeakable horrors. Hotels are usually nasty, post construction mess is certain, pets and kids create lots off debris, bugs congregate and die, then spiders set up and die, I have even had one supply that was nearly plugged with sand!
I had my ducts cleaned by Pure Air. They came out and gave me a free camera inspection, showed me all the debris in my ducts then showed me the equipment they used. They also did a free crawlspace inspection for mold and cleaned my dryer vent. I shopped around and they were by far the least expensive in our area. Afterwards they put the camera back in my ducts and showed me how clean they were. Took about 2 hours, they were very professional and friendly. My house smells great and I feel that I’m breathing much easier now. I recommend them highly!

My best advice has always been that a proper duct cleaning is a valuable investment when moving into a home (new or old), after major renovations and if the ducts have never been cleaned before. It is unlikely that there will be increased air flow, as finding major blockage is unusual, but this will eliminate this as a possible concern if there are air flow concerns. It is also true that the “dust” that is cleared out will most likely never have been distributed through the house unless there has been some work done on the ducts. What is cleared out will be pet hair, toys, clothes, construction material, and biological material (small carcasses and/or feces). Once a proper cleaning is done a follow-up is rarely necessary, but up to the home owners discression.
A family owned and operated company, Armstrong Hearth and Home has been a leading provider of air duct cleaning services since 1965. We are a National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) member company and follow NADCA’s stringent cleaning standards. We use NADCA’s recommended source removal technique that utilizes large negative air machines, mechanical brushes, and compressed air tools to clean air duct systems. Our process does not include chemicals, disinfectants, and masking of fragrances because there is no need with this thorough cleaning method.

12.       All access openings created are sealed up with custom sheet metal access panels. An air-tight seal is made with either an acrylic-based metal tape or mastic sealant. If your duct has insulation, this insulation is re-sealed correctly, not with duct tape.  There is no air loss or structural integrity lost in the ducts after this method.
With Sears two-step carpet cleaning process you can rest assured that your carpet will be fresh, soft, and free of carpet cleaning detergent residue that other carpet cleaning methods leave behind. This means your carpets will feel soft and stay clean longer.
if your issue is mold, again correct maintanance of your filter will solve 95% of your problems. Those sensitive to allergies would be wiser finding out what is causing there allergies and addressing that problem than wasting hundreds on an air duct cleaning job.
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Had duct cleaned (apartment) however, dust is still settling throughout the apartment. Contractor said no other cleaning necessary until two (2) years. Is there a time period before dust no longer settles prior to that time? Should the vendor had worn a mask? He did not cover his face the vents and dust was blown throughout the apartment (had family help with the cleanup). I had to leave when they left because I have asthma and I couldn’t breathe without coughing. Please help!
The EPA estimates that the air inside a home can be up to 100 times dirtier than the air outdoors, and most people spend up to 90% of their day inside. Experts suggest that your home’s air ducts should be cleaned every 5 to 10 years, depending on how you live and if you have pets.  You also should have your air ducts cleaned after construction or a renovation project. When you buy a new home, having its air ducts cleaned before you move in helps ensure the home’s ducts are free of contaminants left behind by prior owners.
Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. The best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate the sources of pollutants, and to ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. The ventilation method may, however, be limited by weather conditions or undesirable levels of contaminants in outdoor air. If these measures are insufficient, an air cleaning device may be useful.

“best air duct cleaning services _why is air duct cleaning important”

More than 15,500 dryer-related fires occur annually, often due to blocked dryer ducts. Are you prepared to protect your home or business? DuctMedic uses state-of-the art products and processes to do just that.
There are many different designs of duct systems, such as attic systems and underground systems, but the theory of cleaning these systems is the same. You may not be able to access all parts of these systems (for example, underground ducts), but you can make a difference in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the system that you can reach.
“The free estimate not only have me an exact price for my service, but also some education on my a/c system. When they did the service they were very friendly and efficient. And along the way, showed me what was being done, and the before-and-after condition of my vents and ducts. Since we just bought our house, I wanted to give the vents and ducts a thorough cleaning and scrubbing. After seeing what came out, I am so glad I did! I will definitely have them back for my yearly servicing.”
Your cleaning service should involve all aspects of your duct work to maximize energy efficiency and air quality. This includes attending to the heat exchanger, blower, drain pan, plenum and coils as well. In the process, your service provider may find that you’re facing larger issues than debris and build-up. The professional may recommend having your furnace repaired if they notice, for example, damage to your heat exchanger or blower motor. Generally, a furnace repair costs between $130 and $500. They may also find that an A/C coil needs to be replaced rather than cleaned and would then recommend A/C repair.

If you think duct cleaning might be a good idea for your home, but you are not sure, talk to a professional. The company that services your heating and cooling system may be a good source of advice. You may also want to contact professional duct cleaning service providers and ask them about the services they provide. Remember, they are trying to sell you a service, so ask questions and insist on complete and knowledgeable answers.
Specialist David explained and showed me exactly what he had to do. My simple cleaning got a tad complicated and I found out my dryer hose was disconnected, but it was reconnected and the duct was cleaned. I am happy to now have my dryer back to working order.
Maybe I took him to literally but I am pretty sure cops wont show up to ensure that my duct gets replaced. He said it would be over 1000 dollars to replace the ductwork if that is the case. Now, I spoke to a friend who did 2 ductwork lines on his own in his attic and he said it was like 15 dollars for the plastic wirewound tubing to create new ducts. Should I cancel that appointment and just do the work on my own? I feel like I’m a chump or lazy for considering paying someone to do this work.
I had my ducts somewhat cleaned December 22, 2014. The hose of the machine the technitian used did not fit in some of my vents, therefore, he did not clean them. But I still paid $428.00 for the service. I will be calling the company on Monday, and kindly ask them to come back and clean the ducts they did not as they did not fullfill their part of the service.
Furnace cleaners are mostly young men, I know this, I have been one for 15 years or so……so heres the truth, if there are any allergies, children, older people with health issues, we are GOING to make money. do not tell the company you have hired about any health complication. they are salesmen. and they don’t care about you. or your money. make sure they do a good job, then kick them out. you don’t need all the bells and whistles they wanna sell you. any idiot can clean duct work, like I said, I am one of them. I am very good at it, but I don’t have the back bone to sell a widowed old lady a humidifier that she doesn’t need for 500 bucks, overall, if you think you need this service done, which you probably don’t, get it done, do not spend anything over 300$ and do not do it again for at least ten years.
Professional duct cleaning services use specialized blowers, vacuums, and brushes to clean out the supply, intake, and return ducts throughout your home. Duct cleaning should also involve a thorough cleaning of the air handler, registers, grilles, fans, motors, housings, and coils of the HVAC system.

The fact is if they are dirty why not clean them. As for the Dr’s comment about if it is not disrupted it is fine. As a pet owner sometimes un disrupted pet hair will sit in the corner of a room or under a counter un disrupted but I still clean it when I notice it. Just because you cant see it doesn’t mean you should leave it there to collect more and more. The people that don’t want there air ducts clean either simply cant afford it but would like it done. OR! the crowd that are to cheap.. You should Clean all portions of your house.
Cesar and Dennis were very professional in my home and did well with the job. They kept me in the loop the entire process by showing pictures of the vents and explaining everything. I feel bad they had a long day since my home was the last job of the day so I gave them a pop for the road! Good job!
I can’t believe the number of people saying a good properly installed central heating system never needs to be cleaned. Maybe they live in hermetically sealed cells? One look into a cold air return and you can see that it definitely needs periodic cleaning. The air in the house “always” has some dust in it and that’s where it ends up. We just had ours cleaned and I saw what came out of it, disgusting. But always ask if they use the “air whip” to sweep/beat the inside of the metal duct. If not, don’t bother. These folks used a little whip on the end of a pressure hose and swept the entire length of all the ducts. I have lighted bore scope that allowed me to see into the duct after he was done and it was spic and span. But do change your filters often, 2 or 3 times a year.
Linda Wetzel of Shaker Heights, Ohio, says she was skeptical about air duct cleaning until a friend told her it had improved her allergies. “I figured common sense said, if there’s dust on the table, there has to be dust in the vents,” Wetzel says.
The presence of mold inside an HVAC system can be an allergy trigger for some. Our Standard and Premium Service Packages include the application of an EPA registered disinfectant to the coils and the ducts.
5. Clean supply registers. Now you can start sweeping out the dust in your supply registers. With the vacuum running and the end of the hose near the register, lift the register. Use the hose to catch any dust that is being pushed out by the fan, and proceed to sweep as far into the register’s piping as your hose can reach. Use your brush to scuff loose any built up dust in the register. As you go through the house sweeping out the supply registers, you can remove and dispose of the paper towels you’ve put in place.
I have been disapointed that Angies List magazine, in a previous article, didn’t mention the EPA recommendations. The same magazine issue had discount coupons from duct cleaners. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
Here’s the problem with those $99 specials (we’ve actually seen them advertised for as low as $49): What typically happens in those scenarios is the company offers this great price, usually in the form of a coupon, to get in the door. Once inside, they almost immediately find other problems — black mold is a common scare tactic used by unscrupulous contractors — or they try to upsell the homeowner on additional services. Those who fall prey to these air duct cleaning scams often pay upward of $600, even into the thousands.

I am NADCA Certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist. Over the year I have learned on simple answer to this questions: there air duct cleaners and there are pretenders. There will be no benefit at all if you use on the very cheap pretender because they will not really clean anything. On the other hand if you call a qualified air duct cleaner with a NADCA Certification you will, like 99% of my customers, report improvement with your respiratory problems, you will see less dust and the job will pay for itself with energy savings and repair prevention.
Indoor air pollutants are unwanted, sometimes harmful materials in the air. Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. Usually the best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate the sources of pollutants, and to ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. The ventilation method may, however, be limited by weather conditions or undesirable levels of contaminants contained in outdoor air. If these measures are insufficient, an air cleaning device may be useful. Air cleaning devices are intended to remove pollutants from indoor air.
I own a small mechanical company. My main work is service and system replacements. I have never been a believer in duct cleaning. The company I worked for before had our duct man come out and do my house. I saw no difference. Preventive maintance is what I recomend. Remove fan and clean, seal fan compartment to prevent dust from being pulled in, filters I install media filters, they are 5″ thick and pleated. I have tested them to make sure static presure was not a issue. Heat exchangers and AC coils need to be cleaned. I will tell you this to do a good cleaning I usually spent 1-2 hrs, When I’m finished I would not have a problem eating my diner on the system. Good filters, clean system and properly tuned up are my recomdation to anyone. I’ve included my email feel free to contact me with any questions. [email protected]

I have wondered if it was okay to tackle cleaning ducts yourself. I had them done professionally years ago, in a different house, and it was quite a job – but they had a rotor rooter sort of thing that went all through the duct work.
This was actually a follow-up to duct cleaning and booster fan installation done last fall. The fan had stopped working and I had the Bham ofc. to come out and get it back in sync…..all was done very fast and by folks that I liked meeting last fall and enjoyed seeing them again. I will have to say that calling your Atlanta call center is not what I will do in the future…I will call Jaren at the Bham ofc for good service. My experiences with the center has not been the best but the Bham folks are wonderful and that’s all that counts. Thank you Sears.
Once the 10″ hose is connected to the system the huge vacuum fan on the truck begins pulling air from the living spaces down through the duct work. By covering the registers a negative pressure is created within the system so dirt and dust can’t return back into the living spaces.
This is to Blueberry who.wrote.about home rental dust problems on 12/ 06/2016. If you’ve been there 13 years.your landlord has made enough money to have those problems repaired.I would call your city property standards dept. And let them know what.conditions you are having to live. There is no excuse for living in those conditions when most problems like that are easy fixes.Especially if your kids are getting sick. Tell your landlord your.calling City Health Inspector if he doesn’t fix.the problems.
Even though there is no evidence to support the claim that duct cleaning benefits your health, there is also no evidence that it harms your health if done properly.  So if you have just had your ducts cleaned, don’t fret about it.  It wasn’t a bad investment in your health and overall it definitely helped more than it hurt.
We agree with our customers who tell us the allergies do not appear as bad after the ducts have been cleaned. Like all governmental agencies are always look to protect the people, they sometimes bend over the wrong way, and don’t deal with reality of success.
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Preventing against air leakage is great, but the only way to keep dust and debris out of a duct system would be to completely seal off the return-air side of the system, which would render the system useless. Cold-air returns will always pull dust and other particles into the system. A high-MERV rated filter is definitely a good idea, but it does nothing to keep the return side of the system clean. Definitely agree though to use foil tape to seal seams, etc. Duct tape dries out over time and as it does can actually add more particles to the air.
Gas-phase air filters remove gases and odors by using a material called a sorbent, such as activated carbon, which adsorbs the pollutants. These filters are typically intended to remove one or more gaseous pollutants from the airstream that passes through them. Because gas-phase filters are specific to one or a limited number of gaseous pollutants, they will not reduce concentrations of pollutants for which they were not designed. Some air cleaning devices with gas-phase filters may remove a portion of the gaseous pollutants and some of the related hazards, at least on a temporary basis. However, none are expected to remove all of the gaseous pollutants present in the air of a typical home.
Your ductwork is a network of connected tubes that distribute cooled or heated air to the rooms throughout your commercial building. Basic cleaning and maintenance of commercial HVAC air ducts and air systems should be completed at least every two years. However, if you are unsure when to have them cleaned, you have come to the right place. Here are some dirty air duct indicators will tell you when it is time to have your air ducts cleaned:
I used Mr. Duct for the first time to clean a dryer vent that had not been working properly even after I had other companies/individuals take a look at it. Mr. Duct arrived on time, were very professional, organized, and knew exactly what to do. The vent now works perfectly. I will certainly use more of the Mr. Duct services.

I have been disapointed that Angies List magazine, in a previous article, didn’t mention the EPA recommendations. The same magazine issue had discount coupons from duct cleaners. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
1. Dirt and dust restrict your HVAC system’s heating and cooling. In the winter, dirt-clogged heat exchangers cannot warm the air as efficiently. In the summer, dirt-clogged condensing coils are unable to cool the air as well. These both increase the HVAC systems run time, requiring it to use more fuel and energy to heat and cool your home.

Very useful. You’re right about the cost. we paid close to a thousand for a professional cleaning last time. I forwarded your hub to my husband who is responsible for those type of work. Hopefully, this will save us some money. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
A: Both the Environmental Pollution Agency (EPA) and your furnace manufacturer recommend having your furnace cleaned and inspected annually. According to the EPA ‘A buildup of .042 inches of dirt on a heating or cooling coil can result in a decrease in efficiency of 21%’.
Hi Chris, I just wanted you to know how pleased I was with the duct cleaning that took place this morning. Both Frank and Michael were professional, courteous, neat, and very nice. I apologize, but I don’t remember the individual’s name who started up the j …
I always recommend Matt at Rainbow. I’ve received multiple compliments from my insured’s letting me know what a great job they have done, and how quickly they were able to get the job done. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a fast, honest, & reliable restoration contractor.

Picture a stack of furnace filters about 8 inches thick and you get the idea of an extended media filter. These boxy units contain an accordionlike pile of filtration media, which makes them more effective than regular fiberglass filters. They require professional installation because the large filter holder must be plumbed into the ductwork. The price, including installation, ranges from $400 to $600; you’ll need to replace the $40-to-$60 filter every year.
Am just writing to say THANK YOU JOHN H. for your well-written, grammatical, and extremely informative comment. I too have an ancient abode which once had an octopus in the basement and now is on a 3rd forced-air gas heater, and have been contemplating having the ducts cleaned, and now am better equipped to make a decision thanks to you.
The average cost to clean ducts & vents is anywhere between $240 and $440. The total cost will depend on how much work the professionals have to do, along with any labor price additions or added equipment. Consult with a HVAC professional to see what you’ll pay and how much you can do yourself.
Go ahead and look inside your system where you change your air filter. A buildup of dust and debris means it is time to clean the system. According to the HVAC Inspection, Maintenance, and Restoration Association (NADCA), a six-room house can collect as much as 40 pounds of dust, pet dander, and chemicals in its air ducts each year! This dirty air is recycled over over again throughout your home, five to seven times a day. How does this affect your home? Here’s a list of common problems in homes with dirty air vents that haven’t been cleaned in five or more years:
