Furnace cleaners are mostly young men, I know this, I have been one for 15 years or so……so heres the truth, if there are any allergies, children, older people with health issues, we are GOING to make money. do not tell the company you have hired about any health complication. they are salesmen. and they don’t care about you. or your money. make sure they do a good job, then kick them out. you don’t need all the bells and whistles they wanna sell you. any idiot can clean duct work, like I said, I am one of them. I am very good at it, but I don’t have the back bone to sell a widowed old lady a humidifier that she doesn’t need for 500 bucks, overall, if you think you need this service done, which you probably don’t, get it done, do not spend anything over 300$ and do not do it again for at least ten years.
Contaminants: If noticeable debris, pet hair, odors, or other contaminants are being released into the room through the ducts after the registers have been cleaned and vacuumed; then the ducts may need to be cleaned.

Ductwork cleaning involves more components than just the ducts themselves. The air conditioning unit and/or furnace must be addressed during the task. Maintaining these components is key to improving efficiency. The following are average costs of cleaning the various kinds of AC and furnace units.
There are many things that people can do themselves in regards to HVAC when given the needed information. I am glad you find this useful. I have and will continue to publish hubs that not only show people things about HVAC they can do themselves but will also save very significant amounts of money. HVAC is an expensive service so anything you can learn to do yourself will save a minimum of $125 as this is the common base rate of a licensed service trip.
Have you noticed little wisps of dust puffing out from an air duct every time you turn on your home’s heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system? Have you seen dust or pet hair trapped in a vent? Is there dust coating the grill on the return air registers? These might be indications that your home’s duct work might be due for a thorough cleaning.
The guy that came out first and did an inspection told me that I needed my furnace cleaned. I told him that is new and only 6 months old and he told me it was dirty. I inspected it myself and it was clean! He wanted to charge me 750.00 to clean it! I told him he was out of his mind! I would expect that a company like yours would employ honest people! You lost my business from now on!
Found a deal on groupon for $59, for duct cleaning. Two guys came out a week later. They cleaned all the vents then stuck a vacuum in the main vent, they said, and let the machine go to work. Still not sure if that’s right but I’ll do more research later. Said my furnace was dirty they could clean it and patch a few wholes in the system for $260. The job took about 1hr. And 15mins. My son now has cold air in his room, vents were cleaned, gave me peace of mind. It was an experience.
I was an HVAC tech and a duct design specialist for 10 years before I stated duct cleaning 20 years ago, I have 8 certifications in mold and mold testing, and I’m here to tell you some of the best and worst duct cleaners I have seen have many certifications, It comes down to work pride and proper cleaning equipment. The efficacy (or lack thereof) of duct cleaning can be settled with one key fact. Settled dust within a duct requires air speeds in excess of 160mph to reenter the air stream. This has been clearly demonstrated in studies. Of course, no furnace system in the world reaches anything close to 160mph.
Chris, I would like to thank you for being so responsive on my request for duct and vent cleaning at my home. Your two reps, Chris Vassalotti and Roderrick Kue arrived yesterday and did an outstanding job of cleaning my ductwork and vents. As we walked thro …
On the other hand, if family members are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses that you think might be related to your home environment, you should discuss the situation with your doctor. EPA has published the following publications for guidance on identifying possible indoor air quality problems and ways to prevent or fix them.
Locate the filter enclosure on the indoor furnace/AC where the large fresh air return duct enters the unit. You may need a screwdriver to turn the latch to open the door to the filter enclosure. Remove the old filter and install the new filter, matching the air-flow direction arrows on the filter to the arrows on the unit. Close and latch the door.
You’d be surprised as to how much of the dust collects at the blower and just inside the register itself. The rest of the system is likely quite clean and with our knocking, even cleaner now. One could feel free to take apart as much of their duct as they are comfortable with but for the time this could take, I’m not sure it would be worth it unless you are well versed in how to do it efficiently.
If they have a website or not means absolutely zero. Check the BBB or search for company reviews on the internet. The internet is great for word of mouth and can save you a lot of time. Just make sure that the sources of information are credible ones and not competitors because the internet also breeds contempt.
I am very interested by your post. We recently had a lead inspection on our property and one thing the lead inspector suggested was to get the air ducts cleaned out. We had our ducts cleaned last year after we under went a large renovation project (since we have a toddler in the house). This year we decided to go for lead compliance and had all our lead removed (we moved out for the work). Recently, my son had a false positive lead test, which prompted us to get a lead dust inspection around the house (including having the vents dust-wiped on the inside). The levels inside the ducts weren’t crazy high (but more than would be acceptable for a floor). As it turned out my son’s lead levels are very low (but not zero). Is it possible however that lead dust from the inside of a vent can come out? Would this be a scenario where you think air duct cleaning would be beneficial?

I live in a 1950’s ranch house in the South. The prior owners were smokers. Based on recommendations from one of the local conservation organizations, I decided to have a home energy audit done. As part of their findings, they recommended additional insulation in the attic and duct cleaning and sealing. This turned out to be a very problematic process. In terms of the ducts, it was necessary to remove the metal grates. However, these grates had been painted over many times and shoe molding covered the bottom of the grates. The vendor was not able to remove the grates without damaging them in the process. Because these grates dated back to the 1950’s, it was difficult to find appropriate replacements. The ones I finally discovered were correct except they were 1/4″ wider. This meant that the shoe molding had to be carved out. The duct cleaner could not provide any assistance with this problem. It took me a month of long evenings replacing the vent covers myself, carefully chiseling out the shoe molding and repainting. In terms of the extra installation in the attic, the same vendor used blow in insulation. Unfortunately, they did not recognize that the 13 floodlights whose mounting extended into the attic were not designed to be buried under insulation. The problem manifested itself in terms of expensive flood light bulbs failing continually. So, I had to have all of the light housings replaced. Yet another unexpected expense. Despite the expense, pain and suffering, I cannot report any improvement in my heating costs or the “quality” of the air. To be fair, I do not have any allergies and did not undertake this for air quality improvements but rather heating efficiency improvements.
Cesar and Dennis were very professional in my home and did well with the job. They kept me in the loop the entire process by showing pictures of the vents and explaining everything. I feel bad they had a long day since my home was the last job of the day so I gave them a pop for the road! Good job!

No matter how thorough or efficient the air-duct cleaning process, it cannot possibly remove contaminants at a microscopic level. In some cases, customers may wish to have Oxine applied to the air ducts to complete the process. Oxine is an EPA-registered disinfectant and sanitizer that is effective against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, and is recommended for its low toxicity. The technician applies Oxine to the air ducts with a fogger. Once the Oxine has been applied, the effects against harmful last for up to two years.
John – a properly maintained negative air machine has 3 stages of filters, ending in a 99.998% Hepa filter. The loose dust gets sucked into the duct cleaning machine & through the filters. If any dust is entering the home, the machine is not well-maintained.
As a professional Gas Technician that’s owns a HVAC/DUCT cleaning company you were taken advantage of. My cost for your home would have been $450 plus tax. This would include unlimited vents, all trunk lines and drop ducts, plenum and AC coil, furnace cleaning, System Sanitizing and dryer Vent Cleaning. Great deal great price.
John and his crew were very friendly and very informative regarding the hvac system and duct cleaning. We will surely call Sears again for this and other services based on this experience. We are very pleased. Thanks!
East Plano- East Plano combines affordability with some of the oldest homes in the city. This family-friendly suburb has access to several parks, including Haggard Park and the Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve.
Consumers can select a particle removal air filter by looking at its efficiency in removing airborne particles from the air stream that passes through it. This efficiency is measured by the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) for air filters installed in the ductwork of HVAC systems. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, or ASHRAE developed this measurement method. MERV ratings (ranging from a low of 1 to a high of 20) also allow comparison of air filters made by different companies.

Please record the sales pitch you receive and post it up here. I’ve heard such stories about the coupon deals (either not showing up or hard selling upgrades), it would be great to hear how it goes for you.
Using our custom-built, high-powered vacuum trucks, we run a variety of high-pressure air tools through each duct, including brush systems and power whips. We utilize a high-powered vacuum system and a much larger vacuum hose that is 8 to 10 inches in diameter, pulling 12,000 cubic feet per minute.
Costs of cleaning ducts and vents in Dallas average $371, which is about $36 more than the national average. Homeowners spend anywhere from $120 to $830, depending on the size and scope of the system. Residents who only need their dryer vents cleaned can expect to pay around $119.
how effective is duct cleaning when i have skunk odor in my home, and will duct cleaning spew the smell right back into my home. I had my home sprayed by a skunk, or I may have a dead skunk deep inside my home somewhere that we can not get to
Duct cleaning has become popular in recent years, with commercial cleaning services popping up everywhere. But is the service worth it, or is it a scam? Here’s some information to help you decide whether or not your home might benefit from having the HVAC ducts in your house cleaned.
Technicians were friendly, courteous, and professional. They removed or covered shoes before entering my home, they cleaned up after the job was completed, and answered my questions concerning future duct cleaning. Thank you.
I just wanted to say that people run coupons everyday offering good deals. Why do they do this? To get people in their store, resteraunt or other place of business so they will hopefully buy other things as well. In case anyone did not know this is a marketing technique to generate more business which in return generates more revenue. More revenue equals successful business generally. So having said that just bc you find a coupon for an air duct cleaning does not mean it’s a scam. It could mean this company is trying to use every facet available to MAKE MORE MONEY! Aren’t we all trying to do that? Yes do your homework and make sure Joe Shmoe knows what he’s doing but do not speculate all companies running a coupon are out to scam you. After all you have the final say. No one is holding a gun to your head making you pay for extra services. Your not scammed because someone was a great salesman. Your scammed when someone says you have mold and does not show you or test it. Or when a two hour job takes thirty minutes. Or when their using a leaf blower and a shop vac. Use common sense people. I’m sure 90% of people know what mold looks like so ask to see it if they do not offer, or you may think somethings up if someone brings in a leaf blower and a Orek XL to clean your ducts. Or pulls up in a compact car talking about fee fie foe fum I’m gonna clean you air thingys. Common sense folks. Use your better judgement.
Furnace, Duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning. The crew was excellent, arrived on time, took their time. Explained everything they were doing. I will definitely use them again. And Recommend them to Friends.
More than 15,500 dryer-related fires occur annually, often due to blocked dryer ducts. Are you prepared to protect your home or business? DuctMedic uses state-of-the art products and processes to do just that.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the service from this company. The crew arrived on time and were very polite and professional. Pricing was competitive compared to the other vent cleaning companies I researched. I will certainly use them again in the future and will recommend them to my family and friends.
Our technicians work quickly but thoroughly to minimize any inconvenience to you. They use powerful tools designed to complete the job much sooner than you may expect, with results that have pleased thousands of customers.
While you consider having your air ducts cleaned, it is a good idea to take a look at your dryer vent. If your dryer vent is clogged, you could be losing energy efficiency. Worse yet, you could be increasing the risk of a house fire. Having your dryer vent professionally cared for costs about $130 on average, and could save you a bit of money and a lot of headaches in the future. For more information on the benefits and cost of having your dryer vent cleaned, take a look at our comprehensive cost guide.

Upon installation of your new air conditioner, ensure that it is done by a reputable contractor.  Some contractors avoid properly sealing duct work because it can be costly and time consuming to do. If you are going to spend the money, make sure that it is done right the first time.
Bill – The metal shouldn’t hold the smell and you probably won’t be able to clean it all unless you disconnect it so for the time and effort, I’d replace the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean them.
Duct cleaning is a band aid, like washing you hands is. Under your description, why wash your hands more than once? If it gets cleaned once, it shouldn’t get dirty again. Well that is, unless they touch something dirty. Keeping your hands completely clean is impossible. Same as keeping dust out of your home. You clean your ducts and over a 3-5 year span they get dirty again. Also, duct cleaners are not licensed but should be certified by NADCA(National Air Duct Cleaning Association).
The cooling coils the air comes into contact with appear to need UV-C lights on them in humid climates. That’s the biggest thing. If the ducts have never been cleaned, then getting that done goes without saying. But those coils need to be cleaned, disinfected, and then UV-C light(s) installed to prevent mold & bacteria build-up in the future on them. That appears to be chiefly responsible for the dirty laundry and/or sour milk smell coming from forced-air AC systems in humid regions.

Equipment used to clean ducts varies widely. The cheaper the equipment used the more you are just wasting money. This is why it’s typically not worth doing. In some situations it may be beneficial, but only after determining and investigating the duct system. This should be done by a licensed HVAC contractor and not a duct cleaner that typically do not hold and HVAC license. (Duct cleaners aren’t required to be licensed in HVAC in many areas.)
1. Cover supply registers. Start by covering up your supply air registers (openings that supply heated air to the rooms) with paper towels. You do this to keep dislodged dust from drifting into the rooms as you work. Simply lift the register, wrap the paper towel over the top of it, and replace it.

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters were invented during World War II as a way to prevent radioactive particles from escaping laboratories. The filters are made of various synthetic fibers; there is no construction standard because the term merely designates an efficiency rating: the ability to block 99.97 percent of all particles 0.3 micron or larger. (A micron is a millionth a meter, or .000039 inch; the naked eye can’t see anything smaller than about 25 microns.) That rating is for laboratory conditions, however. Experts say that at home you can realistically expect a HEPA filter to grab about 80 percent of such particles.
Save money by grouping services. Purchase one service and receive $30 off every additional service performed on the same visit. This discount is not available with promotional voucher pricing, or on products (Oxine, chimney caps, refrigerant).
Experts say research on the health benefits of residential duct cleaning is still in its infancy. Glenn Fellman, the Indoor Air Quality Association’s executive director, says that despite the lack of scientific data, he’s seen and heard much common-sense evidence of improved air quality.
Inspect the system before cleaning to be sure that there are no asbestos-containing materials (e.g., insulation, register boots, etc.) in the heating and cooling system. Asbestos-containing materials require specialized procedures and should not be disturbed or removed except by specially trained and equipped contractors.

Excellent Job by Mr. Duct: Furnace Cleaning. Very easy to set up an appointment. They were right on time. The technician, Brain was very polite and professional. Job well done and very cooperative. I highly recommend Mr. Duct. They followed up on the service the next day, which was great. Over all excellent service.
Both technicians were very curteous and friendly. I especially liked the fact that they let me know that I would need to change the air duct soon due to age. I would definitely recommend this service to friends/family.
I was with you until you said avoid steaming cleaning or moisture, there is no way you can remove mold or any other type of biological without moisture. The best way to do this is in fact with a steamer using a commercial disinfectant and a non reactive odor remover so your home smells refreshed and not like a hospital . This is directly contradictory to your article.
Residents looking to stretch their housing budgets and find a little more space to spread out often find themselves checking out real estate in one of Dallas’s suburbs. Each area offers its own vibe along with reasonably easy access to major highways, making commuting a breeze.

My house gets extremely dusty. I can dust in the morning and by evening it looks like I have not dusted at all by the end of the week if I have not dusted you can write your name in the dust. Would cleaning my air ducts make a difference?
The most appealing argument that can be made is that cleaning your central air conditioning ductwork gives you peace of mind.  Think about it, you have no idea what is hidden in the depths of your AC ducts so it can be comforting to know that a professional has inspected them and taken a good look inside.  If you do decide to take this route, take some time to research your local contractors and only choose a reputable duct cleaner.  For more tips on how to choose an HVAC contractor, take a look at: How to Choose a Contractor: 5 HVAC Tips You Must Know.  Here are some possible advantages to having your AC ducts cleaned:

Ultimately, cleaning the ducts of your HVAC system is not a do-it-yourself project. And it’s certainly not a job for a cheap guy with an air compressor in a minivan, either. A thorough cleaning can only be performed by using industry-standard equipment designed to handle the size and volume of all kinds of homes. That’s why you can trust the trained professionals of Direct Energy.
A: Research has indicated that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems act as a contaminant collection source. These contaminants include fungi, bacteria, dust particles, allergens, and other materials. Atlanta’s Air duct Cleaning expert technicians will remove all of the contaminants from your HVAC system, bringing you one step closer to improved Indoor Air Quality.
Over time, algae and mold can build up and potentially plug the drain, so if the drain is either not flowing or flowing very slowly, it will need to be unplugged. A plugged drain can either cause damage by flooding onto the floor or, if the system is equipped with a drain float, cause the system to stop cooling in order to avoid flooding.
10.       Once all main trunk ducts are cleaned and visibly inspected, we move on to clean your HVAC air handling unit. We clean the blower area, removing it if it is accessible, and air-wash all the fan blades. If you have air conditioning, we will inspect your evaporator coil, as long as it is accessible and serviceable.  We will determine if the coil needs to be cleaned and present this to you during the job.  Matted coils are a breeding ground for microbes. In addition, if they haven’t been cleaned in some time, you can experience up to 20% less efficiency, according to the America Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The condensate pan is also air-washed and drained.
With lots of sunshine and higher-than-average temperatures, Dallas and its residents rely on having efficient air conditioning systems. To keep the air clean and the systems working efficiently, residents should have their systems inspected once a year. Full professional cleaning only needs to be done in certain circumstances, but it’s best to know what to look for and how to budget for the project before the need arises.
Linda Wetzel of Shaker Heights, Ohio, says she was skeptical about air duct cleaning until a friend told her it had improved her allergies. “I figured common sense said, if there’s dust on the table, there has to be dust in the vents,” Wetzel says.
I had my ducts cleaned by Pure Air. They came out and gave me a free camera inspection, showed me all the debris in my ducts then showed me the equipment they used. They also did a free crawlspace inspection for mold and cleaned my dryer vent. I shopped around and they were by far the least expensive in our area. Afterwards they put the camera back in my ducts and showed me how clean they were. Took about 2 hours, they were very professional and friendly. My house smells great and I feel that I’m breathing much easier now. I recommend them highly!
We had a great experience with AirDuct Clean. They were on time which I really appreciate with a busy schedule. The two men that came to my house were professional, courteous and friendly. They finished sooner than I expected. After they left they emailed before and after pics. Great job! I highly recommend this company!! Thanks AirDuct Clean!
In addition, the service provider may propose applying chemical biocides, designed to kill microbiological contaminants, to the inside of the duct work and to other system components. Some service providers may also suggest applying chemical treatments (sealants or other encapsulants) to encapsulate or cover the inside surfaces of the air ducts and equipment housings because they believe it will control mold growth or prevent the release of dirt particles or fibers from ducts. These practices have yet to be fully researched and you should be fully informed before deciding to permit the use of biocides or chemical treatments in your air ducts. They should only be applied, if at all, after the system has been properly cleaned of all visible dust or debris.
As an example…. let’s say you have a car that goes through oil. The oil light comes on to tell you the car is low on oil. Your first thought is to add oil. You add the oil the oil light on the car goes off.

Mr. Duct is the number one expert in air duct cleaning: we had called another company out because, truthfully, their pricing was lower, but boy did it jump when they got to the house! Mr. Duct’s estimate was the same as the one given over the phone and we’re happy with the work.

fact is most homes have bad filter racks. when you insert the filter it doesn’t seal well to the sides so some of the air and dust bypass it and end up in the supply ductwork and into the house. Most of the dust in the supply ductwork settles down and doesn’t get blown in the house but some of it does when the blower starts up or when you put a new filter. If you have allergies or other health problems put in an electronic air cleaner, get your ducts cleaned and run the fan as much as you can afford. you can also get an ECM motor installed which is going to be worth it if you want to run the fan 24/7. If you have uninsulated metal ducts take down the ones you can and wash them. Then put them back and seal the joints. Cleaning the ductwork also improves airflow which is important to AC and Heat pump systems for efficiency. An electronic air cleaner will also improve airflow and static pressure because they usually have a much larger filter surface area. An electronic air cleaner also keeps the ac coil clean like new which means better efficiency and no cleaning needed. AC furnaces sometimes grow mold around the coil because of the condensation. Electronic air cleaners should be able to filter mold spores but the best remedy is installing a UV light next to the coil which will kill the mold.
Do not allow them to use steam because this introduces unneeded moisture into your air conditioning system, and although the moisture on the airflow side of your ducts will soon evaporate, steamers will also blow moisture into areas that do not receive air circulation (joints, etc.) which is a recipe for mold growth.  Don’t allow unnatural moisture into your HVAC system.  Take a look at: How Do You Prevent Mold?
Mila – Not all ducts can feasibly be reached and vertical ducts in the wall are not usually the main culprit in holding dust. This article is about doing a pretty darn good job on your own but not necessarily to get to every nook and cranny. Thank you for reading!

Is it taking your clothes dryer longer and longer to dry? You may not need a new clothes dryer or costly repair. A clogged clothes dryer vent can restrict air flow causing your clothes dryer to be less efficient and could even cause a fire. A clean clothes dryer vent will help your clothes dryer vent run more efficiently and reduce energy cost.
I am a service technician [since ’92]…..and as to double filtering…..I have never recommended it. Granted…..it would be noticeably helpful if the fiberglass filters are the main ones used [which I also never recommend…..as long as system can deliver appropriate air flow with a pleated cotton filter…and any decent service tech can check the air flow for proper cfm]. Any particles small enough to pass through a pleated cotton filter are going to pass through a second filter as well….unless the second filters are so tight that the system is starving for air flow. Has anybody ever accidentally put two filters in their automatic drip coffee maker? What if cars used two fuel filters or air filters? I have told some homeowners to try using second filters at each register [the black thin filter material cut-to-fit….same type used in many window air conditioners]…..but I only suggest this when I know they will still get at least 400 cfm per ton of air flow [350 absolute minimum]……as some homeowners know others who say it has helped and it gives them a peace of mind knowing they are doing something to help contribute to a solution, so it HAS to help [even though I think it falls in the “one-born-every-minute” category…..similar to duct cleaning].
He proceeded to clean each heat register by removing the grille and blasting it with an air pressure hose toward the duct opening thinking that the dust would magically be sucked inside. In one room this caused a ceiling smoke detector to go off because the excess dust fooled it into thinking there was smoke. I put my hand in front of a register he wasn’t working on and could hardly feel a suction. Although we discussed how I open and close damper doors, I realized later that he never checked, opened or adjusted them during the cleaning. He could have closed all but the one he was working on in order to increase suction results. His next step was to blast air into the duct and then attach a “squid-like” device that slapped around inside the duct as far as he could reach. This is important! In a newer house, ducts have long straight runs from the furnace. In older houses like mine they can turn and twist. In fact, the duct we have a problem with runs straight up from the basement inside a wall and turns 90 degrees into a soffit for three feet then into two 90 degree turns to get into the floor joist area for another two feet and finally a 90 degree turn up to the second floor register. When he cleaned this one he could only get three feet into the register with the hose or squid because of the turns. That was the case with most. Hardly what could be described as a decent cleaning.

3. The longer your HVAC system operates, the more wear and tear it undergoes. Long run times can shorten the overall life time of HVAC systems, from AC compressors to hydro pumps, burners, and motor bearings. You’ll wear out your home’s HVAC system sooner.
1. Ducts need cleaning mostly because they were not installed properly. There should be regulatory inpection and approval of clean and proper duct works on new houses. I was extremely unpset when I looked and found significant amounts of construction dust in parts of the ducts in my new house. There is apparently no way to hold the bullder to be responsible for clean ducts.

In 1974 we began our relationship with Honeywell, a major manufacturer, when we agreed to produce commercial electronic air cleaners for them – an agreement that would last 10 years. Shortly thereafter, we also began designing and producing Honeywell’s industrial electrostatic precipitators. This line later grew to include disposable mechanical filter systems.
If someone in your family suffers from asthma or allergies, then again it is important to use a high-quality air filter and replace your ducting with a new, clean system.  My wife suffers from asthma, so I want to emphasize that I am honestly not trying to push unnecessary work on you.  Besides, what are the chances that you are even in our service area of Santa Clarita or Southern California?  If someone in your family from Asthma or severe allergies, I’d replace your air conditioner and your ductwork, use a high quality air filter, and follow the additional advice in this article: How to Reduce Asthma Symptoms and How Your Air Conditioner Can Help.
Dallas, Texas, the ninth-largest city in the country, features a glitzy skyline and cosmopolitan lifestyle along with a friendliness that’s hard to find in many large metropolises. Plenty of cultural amenities, a vibrant arts scene, and a delicious array of restaurants make Dallas an appealing destination for residents and visitors alike. The sprawl and spread of the city’s neighborhoods and suburbs translates to long commutes for most city residents.
The A/C System Cleaning and restoration industry has become a very lucrative bait and switch industry that many Carpet cleaning companies, Maid services, as well as plumbing or handyman service companies are adding on to there services. These add-ons are not fully certified, trained or even have any experience in the HVAC industry. These companies are the reason prices and quality of work are all over the place. If you are looking to make a smart decision for your home a professional Duct Cleaning service will protect you for 5-7 years. This info comes from NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association) which is the closest thing to a license we have for duct cleaning. They have a great site that explains this process and pricing much more in depth and factual than what has been written here. This organization is working very hard to get these bad companies exposed and out of this industry. So in saying that do your research! Green Duct Decontamination is a certified company with certified technicians that take this work very seriously. We can not have these low rated unprofessional companies paste a bad name for an entire industry. Stay away from anything under 250$ for a full duct clean this is not feasible, go look at NADCA.com and you will understand why and what these companies are doing to rob you of your dollar.
I had a company come and clean my air ducts (10 registers- 4 intakes with 2 trunk lines). I was okay with the price of $400. Then, they said I needed to have the ducts sanitized and disinfected and was charged another $360. I was told this process was $18 per duct. That’s 14 ducts multiplied by the $18 which was another $252. When I went to pay however – they said there were more ducts and when I protested he cut me off and was very adamant about the payment. I know I should have tried harder but felt intimidated. I’m confused – was $260 a fair amount?
I had a very satifying experience with the technicians doing my air duct cleaning. I knew every little about the process and it was explained very well and understandable. My house was a mess because I was also getting a carpet cleaning the same day, so furniture was moved around for that, some of it was in the way for the tech’s, they moved it and cleaned up after. My air works better and I sure can tell the difference in air quality.THANK YOU very much… Sear’s Your air duct cleaning Technician’s do a wonderful job! I will surely contact SEARS again for cleaning services…
I have severe allergies and a son with asthma, we both were suffering with breathing issues after we moved into an older home in CNY. I called around and got a couple estimates for Air Duct Cleaning and went with Home Enhancement Solutions. Very courteous and professional, they cleaned every nook and corner of the duct work, all the vents and covers, the furnace and blower. They even showed me some of the stuff they pulled out, gross… but we are both breathing better. I will be having this done every year even though they said it may not be necessary to clean, but they will come back in a year and check for free. Highly recommend these guys to anyone that needs this done.
You wouldn’t drink dirty water so why breathe dirty air? The air inside your home can actually be more polluted than the air outside. Sears has several affordable air cleaning systems available so you can breathe easier knowing your family is breathing clean air.

Accumulation of animal matter and debris caused by animal destruction. When animals get into your air ducts, they can store food, defecate and even die inside. Vermin are also known for tearing holes in ducts, which can let in outside contaminants that filter down into your home.
Bought Amazon Groupon deal for $29. Guy walks in and estimated $900 for all air duct and dryer vent. Then comes down to $600 with free dryer vent. I refuse, he calls office and deal is now $250. I still dont want and his final deal is Ducts and all returns for $100. However, no Brush cleaning, no tapes on vents, no HVAC blower clean up.
Some of the research I have done suggests to have your ducts cleaned when you first purchase a new home to remove drywall dust. Maintain your system well and you shouldn’t have to do it again until you want to sell. Those are the two times cleaning was suggested. So for peace of mind maybe it is a good idea to do it even if you buy a used home and then maybe every 5-10 years.
Air duct cleaning can improve your home’s air quality by removing dust, dirt, hair, and pet dander. This process removes contaminants that contribute to allergies and can reduce the need to dust. Cleaning the ducts of your home’s heating and cooling system can increase its efficiency by up to 30%. To check the dirt and dust levels in your home’s air ducts, remove a vent and use a camera to peek down your ducts to see if they need cleaning.
I know it has to have a new concentric venting system installed, I believe it needs new plenums ( mine are rusty but both of these require extra work , so someHVAC persons are saying I do not need either!! RED FLAG THERE. Also, it will need a new drain using PVCP ?? Piping run maybe two, depending on where my evep coil drain is conected (here in TN they use to run them in with the septic lines, now they cannot be run through that way), Lastly I am not where or what these things do beides hold water but I was told It needs a filter rack and new filter base safety pan. THATSSS it that is all I know about this stuff aside from the fact that nothing up there is to code thus far LOL. !!
If your house has no central air-conditioning or heating, portable room air filters are the most practical choice. (Freestanding whole-house units exist, but they typically require attic installation and ducting to individual rooms.) Most portables employ highly effective HEPA filters, which are not generally used in whole-house systems because they need more-powerful fans than furnaces can provide . Some portable units, called ion air cleaners, use electrostatic precipitator technology. Ion units, which don’t require fans, are typically quieter than HEPA models and cost less to operate because there are no filters to replace. But these units may produce trace amounts of the lung irritant ozone as a by-product of the ionization process
I’ve been in business in Florida for 25 years and purchased a $12,000 duct cleaning system 4 years ago. In the last four years I’ve cleaned 5 duct systems charging around $400 each. Not a very good return on investment. What I have been doing most the time is I get a call by someone panicked because they called some low priced company to inspect their system and were told they have dangerous black mold. Then they call me to have a look. Most the time they don’t have mold, ducts look very clean. However the coils are dirty and the inside of the air handler cabinet needs cleaning. Keep in mind not every system can handle supper high efficiency filters! These filters can block air flow quite a bit right out of the package. Many older systems can’t handle pleated filters due to increased static pressure. “Back rooms with low air flow”. I have taken many hours of classroom study on indoor air quality. Never got any certification because I don’t want to pay another organization dues yearly. I think the problem with duct / system cleaning is most people are suckers for low priced scams that are rip- offs . People call me all the time and ask how much? When I tell them average $400 they hang up. I know I do the job correctly and honestly, and they are going to get racked over the coals by the scam artists by calling $79 whole house duct cleaning guys. People need to check internet, angies list and BBB reviews. But keep in mind even reviews need to be sifted through your rational person filter.
The first line of defense against airborne contaminants is to keep a house clean and well ventilated. But for some sensitive people that may not be enough. That’s where air filters come in. Household air filters are available in two basic types: media filters, which create a physical barrier that traps minute particles, and electronic filters, which use a high-voltage charge to attract and capture contaminants. A few air filters are hybrids that combine both methods, and some include activated carbon elements to combat odor.

Everything went smoothly. One thing that would help would be for the payment to be clear before the visit. I did elect to have a deodorant application and I would have preferred to have the charge explained prior to the visit.
No products are currently registered by EPA as biocides for use on fiberglass duct board or fiberglass lined ducts so it is important to determine if sections of your system contain these materials before permitting the application of any biocide.
Rainbow International’s professionals use the most advanced tools and equipment in the industry and apply systematic best practices honed over 30 years in the business. We put the highest value on open communication and customer service, and fully inspect your ductwork before going ahead with a full cleaning.
Because of the multitude of HVAC configurations and various scenarios that present themselves during an air duct cleaning service, technician experience can play a key role in the quality of service delivered. An experienced tech can gauge the quality of the previous duct cleaning work, appropriately assess the level of cleaning needed, and successfully troubleshoot difficult jobs.
With 2 dogs and lots of dirt outside, you can only imagine the build up in those air ducts over the years. We actually are putting in a new furnace so we are hiring a pro to do it…but now I know what to watch for. Great tutorial and congrats on being Hub of the Day! Wow! Voted very UP and useful.
A family owned and operated company, Armstrong Hearth and Home has been a leading provider of air duct cleaning services since 1965. We are a National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) member company and follow NADCA’s stringent cleaning standards. We use NADCA’s recommended source removal technique that utilizes large negative air machines, mechanical brushes, and compressed air tools to clean air duct systems. Our process does not include chemicals, disinfectants, and masking of fragrances because there is no need with this thorough cleaning method.
Removing dust and debris from ventilation might require you to hire a professional to get down on the floor if you have floor vents, so be sure to speak with them about your furniture and other valuables near the vents to avoid any damages or problems.
Find out whether your ducts are made of sheet metal, flex duct, or constructed of fiber glass duct board or lined with fiber glass since the methods of cleaning vary depending on duct type. Remember, a combination of these elements may be present.
6. Clean return air registers. Sweep out your return air registers. These will likely be fastened with a screw and require your tool to remove them. Again, brush and sweep as far back into the register piping or cavity as you can.
Some research suggests that cleaning heating and cooling system components (e.g., cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers) may improve the efficiency of your system, resulting in a longer operating life, as well as some energy and maintenance cost savings. However, little evidence exists that cleaning only the ducts will improve the efficiency of the system.
This is where i found where the major problem was for the dust problem in my home. I took down the sheet metal that was 16″ wide down by taking the screws out that keep it attached and when i took it down i, could not beleive the amountbof dust that was up there, inhad to put on breathing nasks to actually scoop out all the cust with my hads and then i used my shop vac then bleached everything, i would say that i filled up a 5 gallon maybe more not counting all the dust that was attached to the side of the beams that was all wood , because the contractor did not actually build a 16″ wide return all out of metal , butvinstead used the sheet metal plate as a short cut to make a suare box using my beams in my basement to make a suare box. I was told contractors do that often and i feel that should be outlawed because it caused my sinus and allery problems, nwhich almost caused me to die. so everyone should make sure their ductwork was made properly. Yes seal it . Cover all openings. So it was not the contractors fault that my vents still had dust, in them, he was afraid tomgetvon top of my pool table to try to get iside the short cut ductwork with the 16″ wide sheet metal. To everyone, make sure you clean your vent system. And make sure you could see it visually like i did , neither i or the contractor had no clue the problem was right above my pool table because of the make shift ductwork. The contactor shoul have made a squrae duct like the rest instead of using my beams as a short cut. That could be whyba lot of people start to have major allergy problems and maybe even ashma.so coverall holes to prevent dust to be taken in and all bugs etc. then make sure you clean your ductwork as you see reasonable, they say every 5 years , but i say evry 2 to 3 years, but you can do it yoursely.. You need a good air hose and suction vacum like a shop vac, do a little research. I invented something a while back like 18 to 20 years ago , and now it is on the market to help homeowners such as ourselves with this dust problem. I cannont say anymore because i have to make sure that it was not my research and idea that solved my problem and for all the others that are using what i invented ..there was nothing on the patent search that i hired an invention company to do, back then. Once yor vents are cleaned properly younwill be very happybif you are an allery sufferer. Stop the children for throwing things into the ductwork and sweeping things into the ductwork, keeping your vent system is clean once youbclean it right the first time, just maintain it , you dhould keepmthe hvac system clean such as coils etc it truly helps, people vome into my condo and they cannont beleive how cold it igets and how my system works so well. it is because i have my whole duct system sealed outsid with the duct sealant and my coils i vleaned my self and take the time that the furnase fan is cleaned because that could have a lot of major dust attached to it, mine had a lot of caked on dust it was like hard dirt. Yxounwill save on allergy bills nasal sprays, i wish I could say more because incould say something to really keep your whole duct system clean for years once you do a first good cleaning of intake and return vents. until i email one of the major companies to see where they got my idea from. Intrulybhope it was not from the invention company i hired years ago who did the patent search for my idea. I becam
The short answer is yes, duct cleaning, done right by a reputable company will help with the smell. It is likely though the smell is coming from another source, ie the crawl space. It could also be that another rodent is dead in the duct work. A visual inspection would be in order to check for any breach in the duct system. A duct pressure test would be able to tell you how much air is leaking from the system over all. A hole large enough for an animal to enter would loses a great deal of air, over 300 CFM. It would be worth looking into having this test done and it should cost around $200. Cleaning the air handler and evaporator coil will greatly improve the performance of the air conditioner. Dirt and dust on the evaporator acts as insulation and reduces the amount of cooling done be the coil. Any quality duct cleaning should include cleaning the air handler and coil, and the tech should allow you to watch him perform the work as it is done.
The technicians were not able to clean our air duct system due to lack of access and size contraints. However,Chris, the technician was very helpful in informing us and making recommendations. The technicians did clean our heating unit. They were thorough, professional and friendly.
You’ll breathe easier and enjoy a cleaner indoor environment after having your ventilation system professionally cleaned by Dalworth Clean. Regular replacement of your systems air filters will help to maintain an optimum level of indoor air quality.
We are certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). The NADCA protocol is set to protect consumers against “blow-and-go” companies who use inadequate equipment and methods. Periodic cleaning of your home’s HVAC system can help to prevent the accumulation of pet dander, allergens, construction debris, and other dirt particulates within your heating and cooling system.
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years. Ed Mack, owner of Air Duct Professionals in Lake Elsinore, says homeowners should consider doing it every two to five years, depending on their circumstances.
You may be familiar with air ducts that are constructed of sheet metal. However, many modern residential air duct systems are constructed of fiber glass duct board or sheet metal ducts that are lined on the inside with fiber glass duct liner. Since the early 1970’s, a significant increase in the use of flexible duct, which generally is internally lined with plastic or some other type of material, has occurred.
I had my a/c and furnace serviced and cleaned as well as my ducts cleaned and everything went smoothly and for a reasonable price. Evelyn was excellent at keeping me updated on the progress of the work since I wasn’t able to be there in person. Great customer service and speed of scheduling.
There is a lot of good, general information in the article. As with anything, the homeowner should do their due diligence in getting enough information to make an educated decision. Should duct-work be cleaned? YES! Does it need to be cleaned annually or even every second or third year? Not necessarily. It all depends on a bunch of variables. You’re right that a well designed and balanced system deliver the right amount of air flow, but sometimes conditions outside the home/business, make it a necessity to get the ducts cleaned. As for mold? NO filter is going to address a mold issue. If you have mold, you have a moisture issue that needs to be addressed. Also, in my 38 years of experience in the HVAC and sheet metal industries, washable filters are one of the reasons ducts need to be cleaned. They are no where near efficient in cleaning/filtering the air to the level that they should.
Experts say research on the health benefits of residential duct cleaning is still in its infancy. Glenn Fellman, the Indoor Air Quality Association’s executive director, says that despite the lack of scientific data, he’s seen and heard much common-sense evidence of improved air quality.
My floor register in my room doesn’t allow much air flow. I’ve tried reaching down as far as I could with my long arms but can only get so much. My understanding is all ducks/floor registers are connected for even air flow in our basement. Everyone else’s gets a lot of cold air blowing in theres. How can I get my registers air flow to work better
I wished I had seen this before I had my duct work cleaned. Everything in the article makes sense and is enlightening to the first time user as I was. Unfortunate for me, the only thing cleaned was my wallet!
“They did duct cleaning for me. I liked the customer service and the people that came out. I have noticed a difference in the air quality since the work’s been done. They’re good. They get an A from me.”
Make sure ducts are properly sealed and insulated in all non-air-conditioned spaces (e.g., attics and crawl spaces). This will help to prevent moisture due to condensation from entering the system and is important to make the system work as intended. To prevent water condensation, the heating and cooling system must be properly insulated.

I called a company name “GREEN RHVAC” with their $29.00 one system air duck cleaning. When the guy came with a truck I asked him to tell me how much he will charge and he said that if he gave me price and I didn’t want the service then he would charge me $89 or he would tell me how much he charge me after he finished the work. I immoderately sense that I made mistake to call him to my house. To cut my lost I asked him to give me the price and it was $1600 for two systems house. I paid $100 to him for my lesson to learn and search online to find this site is very helpfully and I should do it before to call anyone for air duck cleaning.

The majority of good air duct cleaning companies use outdoor vented equipment, so all of the dust and debris they capture is vented and contained outside the home. A duct cleaner who uses inferior equipment can actually cause more harm by agitating and releasing more dust into your home, or worse, damaging your ductwork.
The workers showed me the vacuum prior to and after the completed work. Once the cleaning process was complete, the vacuum had a huge pile of dust inside. The cleaning gave me peace of mind just knowing the air I was breathing was rid of the dust the home had been accumulating over the years. I highly recommend duct cleaning as well as this company.
At Mr. Duct, we understand that the decision to service the HVAC system may be a new and confusing process for many home and business owners. It may even seem that every air duct cleaning company has their own special money-making gimmick, further complicating the research and comparison process for you.

How exactly do you expect to kill or remove mold without it ? You can’t even clean your hvac systems coils without moisture of some type ,if you use a steam cleaner you can literally clean the whole system minus the electronics . You should do more research and possibly talk to people who do the work before posting , but don’t listen to me i only have a class A contractor license ,epa license , install /repair hvacs , rent and flip houses for a living .
Hi guys if your not convinced yet that duct cleaning is a waste of time. I’m a HVAC business owner install heaters and air conditioners. Simple facts if you have an old system get a new return air fitted with a filter it will catch all the dirt and dust. If you still have as many do black flecks and stuff coming through it is the lining inside your ducting that has perished. So somewhere you have a hole or very old ducting. If you had rats etc its a hole somewhere. To clean, stick your vacuum in the outlet and push the hose as far as it will go this gets 99% of toys and coins fur and alike. Think about it if the object is not heavy it will come out the duct when unit is on. Service the heaters or air con units but not the ducting. I would go further to say that duct cleaning actually damages the ducting in my opinion.
Indoor air pollutants are unwanted, sometimes harmful materials in the air. Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. Usually the best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate the sources of pollutants, and to ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. The ventilation method may, however, be limited by weather conditions or undesirable levels of contaminants contained in outdoor air. If these measures are insufficient, an air cleaning device may be useful. Air cleaning devices are intended to remove pollutants from indoor air.
It’s a simple matter to notice when your carpet needs cleaned, but dirt and grime in a duct system is hidden from view. Even with regular filter replacement, ducts still require professional cleaning. This requires specially-designed equipment, which is why many HVAC contractors use our services.
Helpful information. Thanks. I wanted to add, I cut a good length from an old garden hose, inserted inside my vacuum hose and duct taped it. It extended the reach further in a tight space. Pulled out a gruesome amount of dog hair. Thanks again.
Dirt, particles, dust and dander build up over time in the metal airways that deliver cool and warm air from your furnace and air conditioner. While the EPA has been unable to prove or disprove the notion, many understandably believe that particles circulate into your indoor air when air blows though dirty vents.
Specifically, do dryer vents (4″ round) need cleaning after 18 years? If a 4″ elbow equals 5′ of vent length, I have the equivalent length of 32′ from dryer to exterior outlet. I know lint can be a fire hazard.
The technician that replaced my blower module said I could definitely benefit from a professional cleaning of the handler and the ductwork, which makes sense. They are going to charge about 500 dollars and bring a crew of people out.
Chemical biocides are regulated by EPA under Federal pesticide law. A product must be registered by EPA for a specific use before it can be legally used for that purpose. The specific use(s) must appear on the pesticide (e.g., biocide) label, along with other important information. It is a violation of federal law to use a pesticide product in any manner inconsistent with the label directions.
The air ducts in your home are a vital component of your HVAC system. They provide the route for circulating air to reach all areas of the home, and as air passes through this system, it deposits large amounts of dust, dirt, pollen, mold, bacteria, viruses, and many other irritants within the ducts. Over the years, this debris can buildup and begin to negatively impact the home’s indoor air quality with every cycle of the furnace and air conditioner. This is the point where your ducts could use a professional air duct cleaning from Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning, and Plumbing.
I am in need of HVAC ADVICE!! I need a new furnace badly, mine is cracked. I have bought both a 95 % AFUE furnace and a 5 Ton evap coil, I figured it should all be replaced at once for both cost and efficency. My question is with all the negaitive things I have heard about companies ripping you off, what type of price should I pay someone for putting in those two items and bringing everything in my attic up to code? I have been quoted $550 – $ 3300. Wide margin here!! Then of course comes the licencing part!! I know in my heart that I should use a licenced contractor but I have had such bad luck and prices from them that honestly one that was licened in Ga. and just not here in TN and is a tech. which charges 1100 – 2200 less sounds good as so long as I pay some type of Profenial HVAC person say $100 to inspect the work after its done and before I pay them.

4.         The vacuum hose is connected to the supply trunk line (trunk ducts are the larger ducts in your home) in a centralized location to create a vacuum at every vent attached. We work on one side of the system at a time to prevent any blowback into the home. If the system was opened, we will attach the vacuum to the plenum in the same fashion.
Your HVAC unit and air ducts deliver heated or cooled air throughout your home year-in and year-out. The air your HVAC unit produces travels through your air ducts and heats or cools your home through the air vents in each room. The EPA defines the dust and other particles in your home’s air as particulate matter, “a complex mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets.” The EPA also notes that, “Particle pollution is made up of a number of components, including acids (such as nitrates and sulfates), organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particle.” 2 If you remove your furnace filter and hold it up to the light, you can probably see several hundred of these minuscule particles floating in the air.
PCO cleaners use a UV lamp along with a substance, called a catalyst, that reacts with the light. They are intended to destroy gaseous pollutants by converting them into harmless products, but are not designed to remove particulate pollutants.
So having said that just bc you find a coupon for an air duct cleaning not mean it’s a scam.

First, find the drain line where it leaves the evaporator coil enclosure. The drain is usually a one-inch PVC pipe (white, grey, or black). Follow it to the end where it drains. Often the line drains outside near the condenser unit, but it can also drain into a utility sink or basement floor drain or, in the case of attic units, down an outside wall.

We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)
The Rotobrush cleaning process is effective in all types of ductwork including sheet metal, flex duct, and fiberboard ductwork. You can even connect the Roto-Vision video inspection system to the Roto- brush so both the technician and you can see-live-what you are cleaning inside the ductwork!
Despite Bergendahl’s experience, Vinick says NADCA’s certification standards have improved the situation. “A lot of [service companies] weren’t going about it the correct way,” he says. “We have an anti-fraud task force, and we’ve gone after some fraudulent duct cleaners with the help of state attorneys general.” He suggests that in addition to NADCA membership, homeowners make sure their cleaners are an established business, have appropriate insurance and are registered to do business in their state and locality.
Remove dust and vacuum your home regularly. (Use a high efficiency vacuum (HEPA) cleaner or the highest efficiency filter bags your vacuum cleaner can take. Vacuuming can increase the amount of dust in the air during and after vacuuming as well as in your ducts).
I just had my air ducts cleaned professionally a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t believe the gunk that was on the old filter after the job was done. Since then the amount of dust circulating around my home is drastically reduced. It never occurred to me to attempt this job on my own. Great hub.
A good air filter, replaced frequently, as well as a sealed system make duct cleaning a waste of time and money. I take the access plate off the furnace plenum and inspect the A-coil frequently. It is squeaky clean, invariably. Why? The air filter grabs 99% of the dust and airborne particles, hair, etc., before it reaches the coil.
Once the Oxine has been applied, the effects against harmful microorganisms last for up to two years.
Even with fixed metal, the vast vast majority of the dust, construction material, and biological material that would be removed with a duct cleaning was stationary and would never have contributed to airborn dust entering the house (Unless you violently shake your ducting or attempt cleaning the interior with air compressors or brooms).
Preventing against air leakage is great, but the only way to keep dust and debris out of a duct system would be to completely seal off the return-air side of the system, which would render the system useless. Cold-air returns will always pull dust and other particles into the system. A high-MERV rated filter is definitely a good idea, but it does nothing to keep the return side of the system clean. Definitely agree though to use foil tape to seal seams, etc. Duct tape dries out over time and as it does can actually add more particles to the air.
Such signs indicate the need for an expert air duct cleaning, which Mr. Duct can provide. We thoroughly clean heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to eliminate dust, pet dander, and other allergens from both residential and commercial heating and cooling systems. For more information on why ductwork cleaning is important, explore some of our resources.
We are a hvac company that provide air duct cleaning service are minimum charge $400 to do a proper air duct cleaning with 2 techs avg 3-6 hours that includes sanitizing. I get phone calls all day about the $99 your not going to get much of a cleaning for that price it for them to get there foot in the door and up sell that the only way for them to stay in business. Just from my 15 years of duct cleaning experience.
Ladies and gentlemen, I hope that this is one of the most enlightening posts on this topic. Around 25 years ago, I started in the HVAC industry. You don’t have to have a journeyman’s license to do duct cleanings and its a great place to start your career because you learn customer service and learn the components of many different systems.
Duct cleaning is a complete scam, I was a “duct cleaning technician” for a whole week before I was fired for not upselling elderly widowed women $2000 extra for “toxic mold remediation” when their ducts were spotless to begin with. The last two days I was employed there I worked as a “helper” alongside a technician thats been with the company 7 years. He scammed every customer on mold and would at times get as much as $2500 extra for treating “toxic mold” in a typical 3 bedroom house in the suburbs. Wait…it gets even better, the “Biocide” the company used was simply a cheap $4.99 per gallon bought at Home Depot air freshener with no anti-microbial properties that was fogged into the HVAC system for 5 minutes, maybe using 1/2 cup of the stuff. In order to provide the customer with evidence of “mold infestation” the technician would be given bogus mold tests that always resulted in “toxic spores present” regardless if you swabbed the actual duct or nothing at all. Not to mention the actual duct cleaning job (typically $400) did basically nothing and the homeowner could’ve done a better job with a shopvac
I have to to admit that I was little skeptical of the air duct cleaning ads you see in coupon mailers, but Mr. Duct really changed the way I perceived the industry. Their representatives were knowledgable and, more importantly, honest. I really appreacited their attention to detail and I was happy with the quality of the work.
You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should occasionally be cleaned. While the debate about the value of periodic duct cleaning continues, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental, provided that it is done properly.
After a scheduled inspection, the technician recommended a deep duct clean, including disassembly of the motor/blower and heat exchanger. The next day, two guys called me to let me know they were on their way (early!). They wore shoe-booties while in the house and used a pump the size of a large fridge. They told me exactly what they were doing and in what order. They removed the registers and cleaned them. Afterward, they even vacuumed the areas around the registers to get fallen paint/dust. I have a new baby coming and while I initially thought $700 was high, I found that for a 3000+sq ft house and two 5-ton units it was a great deal.
When servicing air conditioners, we are sometimes asked, how often should you clean your air ducts?  Those of you who have read our articles, know that we are a small, U.S. Veteran-Owned HVAC company and pride ourselves on giving people honest, straight answers.  Cleaning air ducts is a hot topic in recent times because people are concerned for their health, and indoor air quality is an important part of that.  To be perfectly honest though, the real question you need to be asking is, should I have my air ducts cleaned at all?  The answer to this depends on who you ask and there is an entire industry that has popped-up (almost overnight) that is based on air duct cleaning and indoor air quality.  I will tell you that All Systems Mechanical HVAC does not offer residential air duct cleaning for a couple of very important reasons: the most noteworthy of which is that, in our experience, if your air ducts actually need a cleaning, then something bigger has already gone wrong with your system; secondly, cleaning your air ducts isn’t all that effective and can damage them.  So, is AC duct cleaning necessary?  The short answer is no, but to answer this question more in-depth, this article will discuss what air duct cleaning is, the pros and cons of having your air ducts cleaned, whether or not you should spend the money, and if not, what you should be doing instead.
My father started in the business of home comfort back in 1968, an I around 1986. We still don’t have a duct cleaning machine. I am sure there are always applications for all tools in this industry. However I missed where anyone talked about where dust even comes from……….We do not have these little dust machines sitting in a corner puffing out little clouds of dust….soooo where does it come from?
In my opinion, you should never get to the point where a duct cleaning is necessary, and it is completely preventable.  Instead, you should rely on preventative maintenance to ensure the health and welfare of you and your family.  In other words, treat the causes, not the symptoms!  Here are some tips to keep your air conditioning system running cleanly and efficiently:
It’s 11 years plus in the industry I have only had to sanitize two systems both were slab systems that were in concrete and could be cleaned with a different method than normal duct cleaning. We were able to use water to rinse out the disinfectant. Would you use a chemical on anything else you use to eat or drink with and not rinse it off? The ducts in your home should be thought of as your homes heart and lungs and breathe the same air that you do. And just like us we wouldn’t use bad chemicals in our lungs and heart.
Tom Bergendahl of Wakefield, Massachusetts, wishes he’d hired a reputable service to clean his air ducts instead of a local company that has since gone out of business. “Duct cleaning is a fragile operation, and if you don’t do it right, you can damage the system,” he says. “They completely wrecked the motor.”

“air duct cleaning services near me top quality air duct cleaning”

As I type this, I am having my ducts cleaned. About 30 including returns and the furnace. $543.00. I am watching the team do it and can see the clear vacuuming tubing and how dirty it has become. I like the gentleman’s comment on “stick your head in your vacuum and breath”….I get it. The team showed me the machine and it’s filtration system…and they will show me it again after the cleaning. However, like I said before, I am actively seeing the tubing that is clear before they start and how dirty it is once they begin and continue cleaning. Reputable company and not a “fly by night” coupon service. People don’t be so cheap, that is your problem.
The difference between Four Seasons and the other guys is that Four Seasons has a proven track record, is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau, and has a reputation for quality work. In fact, we stand by our work with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee on our duct cleaning service. Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning, and Plumbing has been family owned for over 40 years, you can have peace of mind that your vent and duct cleaning services will be performed by the leading HVAC company in Chicago land and not by some fly-by-night company.
We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)
Trane® prides themselves on their product reliability. Most manufacturers use the same parts available to everyone. However, Trane® uses their innovations to design, build & rebuild some of their own parts.
UVGI cleaners use ultraviolet radiation from UV lamps that may destroy biological pollutants such as viruses, bacteria, allergens and molds that are airborne or growing on HVAC surfaces (e.g., found on cooling coils, drain pans, or ductwork). If used, they should be applied with, but not as a replacement for, filtration systems.
Unfortunately, the air duct cleaning industry doesn’t have many regulations. Most states don’t have licensing requirements for air duct cleaners — Pennsylvania doesn’t — so it’s important to do your research and hire a company with a good reputation. Check online reviews and ask for referrals.
I had someone out to clean my ducts last weekend. He took a blue bag up in my attic. He came back down in just a few minutes and said I had mold and he even showed me a picture of something saying it was mold but I couldn’t really tell. I refused his service to take care of the mold. He went back up in the attic for a little while and then came down. I never heard any sounds that he was actually up there doing anything. How do I know if he actually cleaned the air ducts?
Once the 10″ hose is connected to the system the huge vacuum fan on the truck begins pulling air from living spaces down through the duct work. By covering the registers a negative pressure is created within the system so dirt and dust can’t return back into the living spaces.
My house gets extremely dusty. I can dust in the morning and by evening it looks like I have not dusted at all by the end of the week if I have not dusted you can write your name in the dust. Would cleaning my air ducts make a difference?
7.         All supply vents are air-washed (at 180 psi) and mechanically brushed, depending on the duct construction type and contamination. These tools are all remote-reaching, much like a plumber’s snake, and are ½” in diameter. Their use results in all contamination inside the vent and its duct work being moved into the main trunk duct line (the larger ductwork) where the vacuum is connected. Although the vacuum power is substantial, no harm is done to your duct system. Once this individual vent is finished, we apply duct mask and move to the next vent opening. Unless your system provides limited access, we do not vacuum up from each vent, as it is impossible to put a smaller diameter vacuum hose down a branch line and correctly clean through any vent opening. This is, however, something you can do with your store-bought HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner.
On the interior, warm, humid air from your home’s interior is blown through the evaporator coil. The cold coil absorbs heat from the air, cooling it, before the air is circulated back into your home. The humidity in the air condenses on the cool surface of the evaporator coil as liquid water, dripping into a pan below. From the pan, the water flows into a drain tube which is typically routed into a basement floor drain, utility sink, or outdoors.
NADCA and EPA both have good points. Although, organizations are made to make money. Common sense and looking at NADCA and EPA pre-checklist. If you don’t see it in the check list, you don’t have to do it! But, if you do, look up Diamond certified co.s and the BBB. Beware of bait and switch scams, $60 vents and the like coupons which claim to help all for the measley sum of $79.00 bucks.
Most mechanical air filters are good at capturing larger airborne particles, such as dust, pollen, dust mite and cockroach allergens, some molds and animal dander. However, because these particles settle rather quickly, air filters are not very good at removing them completely from indoor areas. Although human activities such as walking and vacuuming can stir up particles, most of the larger particles will resettle before an air filter can remove them.
Extreme Clean is a unique cleaning process designed to reduce levels of household dust and allergens within the home. We combine a traditional maid service with specialized equipment and cleaning strategies from our mold remediation division. The result is a significant reduction in the amount of household dust, even deeply impacted dust from the interior space of your home.
Ask them for their contractor’s license – do not hire an unlicensed duct cleaning company because there will be no insurance that the job will be done correctly, and it will be impossible to take recourse against them if it isn’t.  We are talking about a $1000 investment here, so do some research.

The diversity of Dallas’s neighborhoods and suburbs makes it easy for residents to find a perfect spot to call home. From the quaint, historic vibe of the West End Historic District to the stellar schools located in the suburbs, the area offers something for everyone. Some of the city’s most popular locales cater to specific populations. Home prices vary across the different areas, with some of the most affordable options located in the suburbs.
Portable air cleaners generally contain a fan to circulate the air and use one or more of the air cleaning devices discussed above. Portable air cleaners may be moved from room to room and used when continuous and localized air cleaning is needed. They may be an option if a home is not equipped with a central HVAC system or forced air heating system.
Some air cleaners use ultraviolet (UV) light technology intended to destroy pollutants in indoor air. These air cleaners are called ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) cleaners and photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) cleaners. Ozone generators that are sold as air cleaners intentionally produce ozone gas, a lung irritant, to destroy pollutants.
Over time, the pad upon which the condenser unit sits can begin to tip as the soil settles beneath it. An out-of-level condenser unit can cause the compressor within to fail early. Check the condenser for level and use rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level. Service Experts’ Moody adds this exception: “If you have a heat pump system, it’s okay for the pad to be slightly sloped away from the home’s foundation to allow for defrost run-off during the winter.”
However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that there is no scientific evidence that cleaning air ducts regularly improves air quality, and some HVAC professionals say it is a waste of money.
Our professionals are IICRC trained and certified by the American Drying Institute. We utilize truck-mounted duct cleaning equipment that dislodges dirt and other debris. Then we use a high powered vacuum with sixteen 10-foot bags that take up the entire back end and allow for maximum airflow at all times.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the service from this company. The crew arrived on time and were very polite and professional. Pricing was competitive compared to the other vent cleaning companies I researched. I will certainly use them again in the future and will recommend them to my family and friends.
When we think of pollution, we often think of smoking factories and hazy outdoor air. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that levels of some hazardous pollutants in indoor air are as high as 70 times greater than in outdoor air. We are discovering that indoor air pollution causes allergies, asthma and even more serious illnesses.

Up Front Pricing & Free In-Home Estimates: Some duct cleaning companies will advertise an attractively low price to get their foot in the door, but once they arrive, the price begins to grow with additional fees and services you had not anticipated. Four Seasons offers all-inclusive, flat-rate pricing for single systems, and we never up-sell our services. We value honesty in our pricing, so if you have a unique home or a home with multiple systems, we offer free in-home estimates to give you a clear-cut picture of the service we are providing.
We bought an older mobile home over a year ago. I bought a wet dry vac and it didn’t have enough suction power to vacuum the floor duct. The return air is disconnected. I run window a.c. units and have just floor heat. There are blockages in the duct. So, is a shop vac better than wet/dry vac? I need heat desperately before winter arrives.
As an example…. let’s say you have a car that goes through oil. The oil light comes on to tell you the car is low on oil. Your first thought is to add oil. You add the oil the oil light on the car goes off.
8. Clean out blower compartment and return air boot. With the power off, you can remove the panels on the front of the furnace and access the blower compartment and the return air boot. Use your vacuum to sweep up the dust built up in the blower compartment and return air boot. This is where the great bulk of your dust will be. Since you’re in here, you should clean the furnace fan as well.
Hi Chris, I just wanted you to know how pleased I was with the duct cleaning that took place this morning. Both Frank and Michael were professional, courteous, neat, and very nice. I apologize, but I don’t remember the individual’s name who started up the j …
Tyler – Yes. If the breaker to the furnace is off, you should be safe under normal circumstances. A simple voltage detector is always nice to have though to be sure. You just touch it to anything and if there is voltage, it will blink and/or beep. Only costs like $20 and is useful for many things. Thanks for reading.
I have worked cleaning HVAC in my area for almost 5 years. I always do a thorough inspection and cleaning, providing before and after photos. I have completed some jobs where I felt that it was not entirely necessary, but ultimately what the customer wanted. With that being said, I have endless photos of unspeakable horrors. Hotels are usually nasty, post construction mess is certain, pets and kids create lots off debris, bugs congregate and die, then spiders set up and die, I have even had one supply that was nearly plugged with sand!

Jill – Not all HVAC companies clean duct. There are actually businesses who specifically do just that. I’m not sure who you spoke to but that is something to consider. There are also certain duct systems that perhaps only a few companies would be equipped to handle.
What about ringworm? If the fungus is as contagious as doctors warn, and the spores can live several months, doesn’t it make sense to spray some sort of fungus killer into the HVAC system to kill the spores that it has sucked in from the air? Duct cleaning would not be helpful at all here; these spores are microscopic and it could actually spread them further. But given how severely contagious ringworm is, body and especially scalp, does anyone make an aerosol product that will clean the system and kill the fungus? One the resident can use, not call an HVAC company; you can’t do that when you are in an apartment. I hear it’s not the same as mold, it is much more difficult. Truth?
This constant cycle of dust accumulation and redistribution can have serious effects on your home’s cleanliness and your family’s health. Constantly re-circulated allergens will irritate allergy sufferers throughout the year, even when their allergies are not in season (like pollen and weed allergies). Additionally, people with compromised respiratory systems may experience difficulty breathing in homes with high dust quantities. With Sears Air Duct Cleaning, you can significantly reduce the amount of dust in your air ducts, which can lead to a better indoor air quality throughout your home.
