However, if you do have leaky ducts, with gaps that allow for significant amount of insulation and dust from attic/wall space to enter the ducting, it should be fixed to reduce the dust entering the home. This is not the same as duct cleaning, this is duct sealing and envelope sealing.
You’d be surprised as to how much of the dust collects at the blower and just inside the register itself. The rest of the system is likely quite clean and with our knocking, even cleaner now. One could feel free to take apart as much of their duct as they are comfortable with but for the time this could take, I’m not sure it would be worth it unless you are well versed in how to do it efficiently.
In 1974 we began our relationship with Honeywell, a major manufacturer, when we agreed to produce commercial electronic air cleaners for them – an agreement that would last 10 years. Shortly thereafter, we also began designing and producing Honeywell’s industrial electrostatic precipitators. This line later grew to include disposable mechanical filter systems.
The Rotobrush aiR+ XP is more powerful than the original aiR+. With up to 30% more power it makes it easier to remove even heavy build up seen in many air duct systems. The new aiR+ XP vacuum motor uses 2-4 horsepower motors vs. 2-2 horsepower motors.ng easy.
The best way to ensure indoor air quality and avoid replacing your A/C system is to clean your ducts. Duct cleaning can be as simple as dusting out the vents or something more in-depth like having a professional look through them. While it sounds daunting, what you gain in keeping them clean is much better than the initial cost. Need help finding a duct cleaning service near you? Downtown- Pedestrian-friendly with a variety of hot spots, boutiques, galleries, and museums, downtown Dallas has a lot to offer its residents. Housing options range from affordable high-rise apartments to luxury lofts, providing options for most of the young professionals and hipsters who opt for urban living. With Main Street Garden and Klyde Warren Park nearby, downtown residents also have access to plenty of green space to go out and play.
Now it’s time to move inside. On the inside blower/furnace unit, find the evaporator coil door. You may need to remove some foil duct tape and take out a few screws or bolts. Inside, use a soft brush to dust off the coil, then spray the coil with commercially available no-rinse coil cleaner (available at home improvement stores). The spray will foam up and then drip into the drain pan. Clean out the drain pan with soap, hot water, and a little bleach. Then, pour a cup of 50% bleach/50% water down the drain. To keep the drain clear longer-term, place a commercially available drain pan tablet in the pan. This will inhibit future algae growth.
At $39 will admit (after asking them several times) that they typically use an electric-powered shop vacuum to clean your ducts. You might wonder how a shop vacuum can remove possibly several pounds of grime?
Working together, the brush, rotating at 450 rpm, and vacuum will clean any air duct. This combination ensures professionally cleaned air ducts for your customers. And to sure this system is safe for flex duct and all air ducts, the Rotobrush aiR+ XP encloses the rotating cable inside the hose.
Just bought a house that’s been vacant for a long time. I got little bugs coming out my vents .Want to get it clean but don’t know nothing . what the proper tools companies should be using since this is a expensive job.
John and his crew were very friendly and very informative regarding the hvac system and duct cleaning. We will surely call Sears again for this and other services based on this experience. We are very pleased. Thanks!
You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should be occasionally cleaned. Provided that the cleaning is done properly, no evidence suggests that such cleaning would be detrimental. EPA does not recommend that the air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only as needed. EPA does, however, recommend that if you have a fuel burning furnace, stove or fireplace, they be inspected for proper functioning and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

Extreme Clean is a unique cleaning process designed to reduce levels of household dust and allergens within the home. We combine a traditional maid service with specialized equipment and cleaning strategies from our mold remediation division. The result is a significant reduction in the amount of household dust, even deeply impacted dust from the interior space of your home.
Remove dust and vacuum your home regularly. (Use a high efficiency vacuum (HEPA) cleaner or the highest efficiency filter bags your vacuum cleaner can take. Vacuuming can increase the amount of dust in the air during and after vacuuming as well as in your ducts).

“air duct cleaning system -importance of air duct cleaning”

Knowledge about the potential benefits and possible problems of air duct cleaning is limited. Since conditions in every home are different, it is impossible to generalize about whether or not air duct cleaning in your home would be beneficial.
I have been told I need to replace my duct work. Air conditioner froze up, duckwork was full of water, and they had to pierce it to release it. They want $550 to replace. I live in a modular home with crawl space underneath.
We provide superior quality and prompt service to our customers. When we come to your home to provide our services, we treat your home as if it were our own. We want you to notice that we left your home in better condition than it was before we showed up. We provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you aren’t completely satisfied, our services are free!
Your Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning system (HVAC) will consist of either a furnace and AC or a heat pump, which both heats and cools. Both types will have an interior unit (evaporator and blower) and an exterior unit (condenser coil and compressor). These instructions apply to a whole-home air-conditioning or heat pump unit.
There are a few different methods to cleaning air ducts. The main reason for a good or not good experience with a duct cleaning company is the individual that is performing the task. I have seen a couple ways of doing it and both work if the person at the other knows what to do. You can also ask them if they have a scope so you can see in the ducts and verify a good job.
Cre8tor, this comes at the perfect time for me: the dust in my house has been increasing (and I hate dusting!) and I have been looking to the ads for duct cleaning services with new interest. Thank you for this clear and easy directions on how to do it, I foresee duct cleaning being added to my spring cleaning list! 🙂
Yes, ducts can look terribly dusty. However, that dust will not become aerosolized during the normal operation of your furnace. There is an easy way to test this. Rent a particle counter and test the air flowing out of your registers before and after cleaning. You will not see any improvement in the air quality or any reduction in the airborne dust level. Think of it this way. Duct cleaning companies tell you that you need to clean your ducts when you can see a layer of dust in your ducts. Yet that very layer of dust is proof that duct cleaning is unnecessary, because that dust proves that the air movement in your furnace is not fast enough to re-aerosolize the dust.
I can’t believe I got ripped off by this Air Duct Cleaners. I called them for this $63 coupon per furnace unlimited vents then when they came after he checked it all I hear is I have molds and leak all is worth $499, $799, $899 per furnace but I told him to just clean the duct and the single leak per furnace worth $38 each. Still eanding $899 total. All the work he done is in less than an hour he didnt even go to each vent to clean it. All he did is to path the air leak on that entry pipe to the furnace and open the main venting system, vacuum it, and wash the floor of the vent with a solution. Overall time is about 20 mins talking with me discussing all the option which thinking they made me think I don’t really have an option and 40 mins wash and vacuum he took pictures of before and after of only one furnace. He gave me a receipt without the details on what he has done in the house just the name and price. I think we may need a strict law to punish and control all this companies who do this so other company who do good will despise them.
Certifications: The cleaning company should be certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which sets standards for HVAC system cleaning. The EPA does not certify duct cleaners, so avoid anyone making that claim. Check for relevant licenses and insurance – some states require a license for duct cleaning while others don’t.
Up Front Pricing & Free In-Home Estimates: Some duct cleaning companies will advertise an attractively low price to get their foot in the door, but once they arrive, the price begins to grow with additional fees and services you had not anticipated. Four Seasons offers all-inclusive, flat-rate pricing for single systems, and we never up-sell our services. We value honesty in our pricing, so if you have a unique home or a home with multiple systems, we offer free in-home estimates to give you a clear-cut picture of the service we are providing.
A good air filter, replaced frequently, as well as a sealed system make duct cleaning a waste of time and money. I take the access plate off the furnace plenum and inspect the A-coil frequently. It is squeaky clean, invariably. Why? The air filter grabs 99% of the dust and airborne particles, hair, etc., before it reaches the coil.
Last week I had my carpets cleaned. The guy offered to look at my ducts and HVAC unit to see if it needed cleaning. Of course he said it needed cleaning. I will say the blower unit did look bad. So I took the plunge and paid about 600 USD for carpets and ducts. The guy even “gave” me 2 free ducts.
Cleaning your ductwork can damage it.  Secondly, the air duct cleaning procedure consists of sticking vacuum tubes down your ductwork, which can damage and crack the sensitive plastic interior of your ductwork.  It is also important to know that, despite what they might say, most duct cleaning companies are not HVAC contractors!  They actually know very little about the proper operation of your system.
The EPA is so far behind on useful knowledge because of the lack of funding so don’t be mislead. The Hvac old timers were left at the dock so to speak and missed out on the IAQ movement. The ones that are savvy and up to date on the information do Air Duct Cleaning, even tho that will lead to a few less service calls its the right thing to do for their customer. Please take a look into a return duct that has never been cleaned, I dare anyone to say it does not need to be cleaned.

You have covered all necessary points on your blog. Dirty ducts blow dust, lint and other debris into every room of your home but sometimes you have to call professional for all duct cleaning services.
I have had this done and am skeptical of the benefits. I watched the guy do it and it seemed he did a very thorough job, but my feeling are if your filter stays very clean for long after it is normally due for a change you do not need duct cleaning.
Did you know the quality of the air in your home can be much worse than the air outdoors? The list of potential allergens and pathogens in your ductwork is long: bacteria, kitchen grease, pet dander and more. In fact, the EPA lists indoor air quality as one of the top 5 health threats in America.
Our air duct sealing service is designed to locate and seal all of the holes and gaps in your air ducts that have formed over the years. This helps prevent dirt, dust, debris and ambient air from entering your system and decreasing its energy efficiency.
Nevertheless, it is necessary to recognize what drives the atmosphere toward hiring professional air duct cleaning services cleaning encompasses. The venting cleaning for simple cleaning of air ducts may be limited by smaller organizations. Leading professional franchises typically call for an inspection system provide a preliminary price estimate repair and parts replacement, if required and to see what services are desired. Dallas air duct cleaning professionals focuses on great quality and supplying the finest service encounter in the instance of of professional air duct cleaning service.
The most efficient way to filter household air is through your home’s forced-air heating or central air-conditioning system. The filters are built into the return-air ductwork, trapping particles as air passes through. Such systems are passive; as long as the fan is running, they are constantly filtering all the air in your house. Whole-house filters come in four main types.
lo everyone. I read your Experience. I can say, with good reason since i m an authorized technician of air duck cleaning, that Angie is absolutely right. in order to do a proper cleaning of the ducts serve the means and the proper time. usually for a normal house with a single system the amount payable is between 350 and 550 dollars and the time goes by dirt inside but always not less than 2 hours to clean everything. I regard cupon I can tell you that some are valid and offer the right price for the performance. I also read mold in ducts, before we tell the customer that there is mold perform a test that is analyzed in the laboratory and only after 3 days, with the result of the analysis of paper, inform risk and if the customer is okay proceed with the sanitation of the duct with certified products of the highest quality, just think that the product that we use costs 55 dollars a gallon. but I’m not here to make me adverts, I feel sorry for people who have had bad experiences, I personally love my job and I try to always do it in a proper manner.
The average cost to clean ducts & vents is anywhere between $240 and $440. The total cost will depend on how much work the professionals have to do, along with any labor price additions or added equipment. Consult with a HVAC professional to see what you’ll pay and how much you can do yourself.
If you price air duct cleaning from several companies, you will notice a big price difference from one company to the next. For a typical 2,000-SF home, the price might range from $60 to $600. After learning more, you will find that PRICE has a direct correlation to the DEGREE of cleaning you get.
A house breathes just like you an I.For example every time your clothes dryer comes on it automatically creates a negative pressure inside the home.So if air goes out of the living area it has to be replaced…..now look above the ceiling fan ….you see the cover…underneath that is a hole straight to your attic….Now the stuff on your ceiling fan you call dust…call it insulation, rat fecies or anything else that is in your attic that could be pulled in your due to a negative pressure.
Fig. A shows a typical central air conditioning/furnace setup. Two copper tubes connect the outdoor compressor and its condenser coil (a “coil” is a combination of fins and tubes) to the indoor evaporator coil that’s located in the plenum (Fig. A) above the furnace blower. One tube is covered with foam insulation. If you have a heat pump, both tubes will be insulated.

“what does air duct cleaning do air duct cleaning cost”

Just read your response on cheap air duct cleaning specials and you hit it right on the head. I called a company that advertised its “spring special” in the val-pack coupons we get every so often in the mail. They advertised $89 for up to ten vents and then $9 for each additional vent. The main trunk lines were $25 each. Everything was fine and the tech who came out was very good in explaining what he would be doing. Of course he showed me that he did a mold test (which they do for free) and the results of the test were that we had some serious mold. The cost to clean this would be $20 per vent. We have 30 vents throughout the entire house. In addition he mentioned the blower motor of the furnace needed cleaning which was an additional $250.00 if I wanted to do it (because it was so hard to get in and clean it). I initially said yes to the blower cleaning and “give me a minute to think about it” on the mold clean up. After about five minutes I went down to tell him no to the blower and no to the mold clean up and he already had the blower out and had started cleaning it. He said no problem he would put it back and then came back up later to tell me he texted his boss and that his boss would offer the mold cleaning for half of what they usually do and he cleaned the blower motor for free since he already had it out. I ended up going ahead with the mold cleaning which I probably should not have but with four kids i figured i should get it taken care of. Probably a rip off but who knows. When it was all said and done this is what I paid for a house with 30 vents and 6 main trunk lines: $409 + $89 to clean a dryer vent + $300 to treat mold in vents = $798.00
im buying a house on west coast of Fl close to the water. The inspector said there seemed to be mold at some registers & at some connections in the attic. The pics did show wat appeared to be mold & said its common. What do i do now? im very low on money, looking for an idea. i can replace all the flex tubing in the attic.
Interesting. Giuliano Cuete and Carlo Olcese have the exact same post about pretenders and being NADCA certified, word for word. So how do you become NADCA certified? And does that mean you are not a scam artist or a “blow and do” ripoff? hmmm, interesting. The EPA says that under normal conditions, a properly maintained system should NEVER need it’s ducts cleaned.
My best advice has always been that a proper duct cleaning is a valuable investment when moving into a home (new or old), after major renovations and if the ducts have never been cleaned before. It is unlikely that there will be increased air flow, as finding major blockage is unusual, but this will eliminate this as a possible concern if there are air flow concerns. It is also true that the “dust” that is cleared out will most likely never have been distributed through the house unless there has been some work done on the ducts. What is cleared out will be pet hair, toys, clothes, construction material, and biological material (small carcasses and/or feces). Once a proper cleaning is done a follow-up is rarely necessary, but up to the home owners discression.
The air conditioning unit sits right in front of this house. Shrubs will help soften it, but our plan also calls for a two-sided screen to help hide it even more. The benefit of a two-sided screen: It won’t trap heat.
If they have a website or not means absolutely zero. Check the BBB or search for company reviews on the internet. The internet is great for word of mouth and can save you a lot of time. Just make sure that the sources of information are credible ones and not competitors because the internet also breeds contempt.
If you don’t agree with duct cleaning, fine. If there are some things that HVAC people can do to make the system need cleaning less often fine, but to suggest that I need to GO TO JAIL????? If you need to knock others to make yourself look better……. If duct cleaning is such a scam, why are their governing bodies like NADCA (which I do NOT belong to),several manufacturers of equipment, and national restoration franchises (I’m not a franchise either) who provide this service? I guess the whole world is stupid and only HVAC people are smart. I suppose I am scamming them when I clean puff backs, water damage, fire damage, and clean their carpets too? Or did I wake up one morning and say “ya know, it is great to be a hard working, honest owner operator, but I would love to provide a service that unlike everything else I do is a and rips off the 90% referral business I busted my butt to earn”
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends air duct cleaning every three to five years. You might need air duct cleaning more often, however, if you have not changed your furnace filter regularly (we’re all busy, we understand) or if you had home renovations completed (construction dust). It’s especially important to hire a professional, respected air duct cleaning service company if you know or suspect you have:
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Linda Wetzel of Shaker Heights, Ohio, says she was skeptical about air duct cleaning until a friend told her it had improved her allergies. “I figured common sense said, if there’s dust on the table, there has to be dust in the vents,” Wetzel says.
Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparison due to the fact that there is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. However there will be some albeit a lot less in any event.
I did the $49.00 Groupon they just left. Basiclly all they did was stick a shop vac type hose into the vent supply and one return. I also had the dryer done. the person in charge pointed to the main return inside my humidifier and said it needed cleaning
After they finished cleaning, yes, the blower look like new, but then i asked to look at the vacuum machine deposit. I sincerely expected to see a lot more of stuff after 10 years with not 1 cleaning… But hey, I guess I’m good for another 10 years, right?
John – a properly maintained negative air machine has 3 stages of filters, ending in a 99.998% Hepa filter. The loose dust gets sucked into the duct cleaning machine & through the filters. If any dust is entering the home, the machine is not well-maintained.
The most appealing argument that can be made is that cleaning your central air conditioning ductwork gives you peace of mind.  Think about it, you have no idea what is hidden in the depths of your AC ducts so it can be comforting to know that a professional has inspected them and taken a good look inside.  If you do decide to take this route, take some time to research your local contractors and only choose a reputable duct cleaner.  For more tips on how to choose an HVAC contractor, take a look at: How to Choose a Contractor: 5 HVAC Tips You Must Know.  Here are some possible advantages to having your AC ducts cleaned:
Had my air ducts cleaned yesterday morning, it took about 4-5 hours by the time the tech finished the job. He was very professional did a very neat job, you can tell he knows what he is doing. Really good customer service before and after the scheduled appointment. I am very glad that I run into this company. Thank you
There are many benefits in having a humidifier as part of your HVAC Solution. In Chicago, as Fall becomes Winter, you will begin to notice the air around you beginning to become drier. When the thermostat is turned up, and all your windows are closed, this can cause major problems within your respiratory system. If you rely on forced air heating, the best way to reduce infection is investing in a humidifier.

A thorough cleaning can yield long-term energy savings. Bob Baker and Ross Montgomery, who study air quality and energy efficiency for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, say their research shows dirty coils and blowers in commercial buildings can cut efficiency by as much as 40 percent.
Portables powered by fans are rated by “clean-air delivery rate” (CADR), which measures both air movement and gunk-trapping effectiveness. It’s important to buy a filter that’s big enough. Manufacturers recommend that the CADR be at least two-thirds the room’s area in square feet — so a 15-by-20-foot room (300 square feet) would need a filter with a CADR rating of 200. (The calculation assumes 8-foot ceilings.)
Before you choose any duct cleaning service provider, interview as many service providers as you can. Ensure that the service provider is certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association or NADCA. Make sure that they hold a good standing in the Better Business Bureau and have all the necessary certifications and license. Be clear about their terms of service. Make sure they have the right equipment to do the job. It is best to go for a company that has been tried and tested successfully by any of your acquaintances or opt for a service provider that has been in the business for quite some time.

Air Duct Cleaning is one of the healthiest HVAC maintenance decisions you can make. I am just a homeowner and have absolutely no qualifications, but it seems pretty logical to me that a good cleaning every once in a while is just a good practice. It just seems like too vital of a component in a vital system to never clean.
Duct cleaning is a band aid, like washing you hands is. Under your description, why wash your hands more than once? If it gets cleaned once, it shouldn’t get dirty again. Well that is, unless they touch something dirty. Keeping your hands completely clean is virtually impossible. Same as keeping dust out of your home. You clean your ducts and over a 3-5 year span they get dirty again. Also, duct cleaners are not licensed but should be certified by NADCA(National Air Duct Cleaning Association).

Don’t Get Fooled: Keep in mind that intake ducts (room ducts that return air to the heating/cooling unit) are likely to be dirtier than supply ducts (which deliver conditioned air from the HVAC unit), since they often don’t have filters. Make sure any “before-and-after” photos are of the supply ducts, where it’s most important that the air clean.

“air duct cleaning how to air duct cleaning experts”

Dear Angie: I’m looking to have my air ducts cleaned but I’ve seen prices vary from $99 to $800. I have not been given an explanation, that I believe, that describes the reason for the price difference. What are your thoughts on the reasons for the wide range of costs? — D.C., Landisville, Pennsylvania.
Had duct cleaners here coupon for 40.00 for complete home I was not here but my husband was. I told my husband that they will prolly ask for more money and I was right. 85 extra to do duct cleaning which I pled because my dryer vent was full of animal hair extensions then for 600 to clean a/c coils I said no. Just do what the coupon said. Do your homework be 100 steps ahead of these con men rember they con people all day long and know the ans to your objections
I am very interested by your post. We recently had a lead inspection on our property and one thing the lead inspector suggested was to get the air ducts cleaned out. We had our ducts cleaned last year after we under went a large renovation project (since we have a toddler in the house). This year we decided to go for lead compliance and had all our lead removed (we moved out for the work). Recently, my son had a false positive lead test, which prompted us to get a lead dust inspection around the house (including having the vents dust-wiped on the inside). The levels inside the ducts weren’t crazy high (but more than would be acceptable for a floor). As it turned out my son’s lead levels are very low (but not zero). Is it possible however that lead dust from the inside of a vent can come out? Would this be a scenario where you think air duct cleaning would be beneficial?

However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that there is no scientific evidence that cleaning air ducts regularly improves air quality, and some HVAC professionals say it is a waste of money.
Some research suggests that cleaning heating and cooling system components (e.g., cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers) may improve the efficiency of your system, resulting in a longer operating life, as well as some energy and maintenance cost savings. However, little evidence exists that cleaning only the ducts will improve the efficiency of the system.
I’ve talked to many homeowners who have been victimized by these scams. Even the ones who don’t succumb to the high-pressure techniques are still frequently wronged, as these lowball companies often use inadequate tools and equipment — such as handheld vacuums and drills — to do the work. They quickly go through the house, vacuuming out a few vents, and are gone in less than 30 minutes. A legitimate air duct cleaning should take three to four hours to complete, according to reputable duct cleaning companies that I’ve spoken to.

A year and a half ago (fall of 2015) we replaced the furnace and air conditioner. From what we could determine this was the third forced air furnace and second air conditioner unit for the house. As part of the installation, we changed out the two 6″ ducts feeding the second floor with 8″ ducts. The idea was to get more cold air to the second floor in the summer. It worked and for the first time the second floor and first floor temperatures were the same when the air conditioner was running. Of course, to make the system work I close down upstairs duct damper doors in the winter and open them up in the summer.
My first thought is that you have underground duct work. If so, there are various ways to address that but I’m not real familiar with them. If you don’t then I’m still not sure what that could be. If you’re in heating season, some furnaces will smell bad because the heat exchanger is bad and if so, you need to consider a new system if you’re not under warranty. Note: Many heat exchangers have rather long warranties. 20 years…maybe lifetime.
Specifically, do dryer vents (4″ round) need cleaning after 18 years? If a 4″ elbow equals 5′ of vent length, I have the equivalent length of 32′ from dryer to exterior outlet. I know lint can be a fire hazard.
Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. The best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate the sources of pollutants, and to ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. The ventilation method may, however, be limited by weather conditions or undesirable levels of contaminants in outdoor air. If these measures are insufficient, an air cleaning device may be useful.

Bee’s air duct clean Denver realized that his job was not really to clean the duct work, it was to sell additional services.  He quickly moved up and spent more than a decade as an HVAC technician repairing and replacing furnaces and air conditioners. He noticed a big push to replace systems instead of maintain them. This is how Bee’s Air Duct Cleaning was born. Bee and the rest of us at Bee’s air duct cleaning believe in taking care of the furnace and air conditioner you have, so it runs as efficiently as possible and last a long long time.

I just had my blower module replaced because my AC coil was frozen over. The underside of my coils had a thick mat of dust because I had never had it cleaned. I cleaned it myself by using a soft brush attachement on a shop vac. The inside of the blower appears to have a white/green growth, and I am sure the ductwork of my 30 year old house can’t be in good condition.

I have a white gritty dust throughout my whole house. Dust and it comes right back. We have central air. In 2013 had all the air conditioning tubing in the attic replaced. Old ones were completely clean. Why?? Thought dust would be in there. Put everything in plastic containers. Furniture everything is always covered with this. Problem is always there year round. Furnace people said it is not coming from furnace. We built house in 1971. Only started with this @ 19 years ago. Thinking when air conditioning went in. We cough all the time and sneeze. I do not have friends come here because I hate how dirty my house looks.
7. Shut off fan and furnace. Shut the fan off at the thermostat and the power off to the furnace via the service switch or breaker panel. Do not just shut off the thermostat, because that doesn’t turn off the power to the unit.
Well, I had the cleaning done. The handler is definitely much quieter. It was explained to me that with the coils clean, the condensation will be able to sweat off instead of sticking to the dust and dirt, therefore the humidity (lots of humidity in florida) will be removed better. I feel as if it was worth it, but, I will definitely change that filter every 3 weeks or so from now on. I don’t want to pay that cost again.
in response to this reply ” should your ducts be cleaned”, i have to politely correct the person who answered this. you are not using common sense. first, most of the country uses metal duct work, so for you to say what you did, is wrong. second, the duct system in a house is a circulatory system. that means it draws air into the furnace, it gets filtered, and then it is blown out into the house to heat or cool. So, obviously that air is being brought into the house from somewhere right? Yes, its coming from the outside where there are many allergens and dust particles . For you to says that about whether a duct system is sealed or not, makes no difference. The air is coming from somewhere right? It has to originate from somewhere right? Just look on top of your cieling fan. If there is a bunch of dust up there, then there is obviously a bunch in your ducts. And the duct air is being circulated every day, and every hour through your house. Its simple, dust collects everywhere in your house. Imagine if you never dusted your shelves, or tv? There would be a ton of dust after a while. Well, now think about the air in the duct system. Of course theres gonna be a ton of dust in there. For you to say that it is not benififcial to clean the ducts, is plain ignorant. 90% of the air we breathe is in our household. Wouldnt you want that air to be as dust and allergen free? I could go on for hours about the benifits of duct cleaning, but i just wanted to make a quick point that the person whose says it is not benificial to clean them, is not using common sense. Not to mention, giving the people who clean ducts for a living, a bad name. Use your head .

Nothing. Your technician was very polite and helpful. Incidentally, I called Sears rather than one of the many duct cleaners that advertise because I felt I would have someone I could trust to be in my home.
Quality and price should come hand in hand, a too-good-to-be-true price for an efficient air duct cleaning will not give you the quality that you wanted. To make sure you are getting your money’s worth, check reviews of air duct cleaning companies, certifications from industry since this work requires continuous learning due to new techniques and research breakthrough from time to time. My mom is located in Arizona and they trust J&M Restoration air duct cleaning company, they have an A+ BBB rating, they used EPA approved sanitizing agents, their technicians are NADCA certified, and the company is certified by the Institute of Inspection, cleaning and Restoration. Make sure to shop around and get written estimates first.

Costs of cleaning ducts and vents in Dallas average $371, which is about $36 more than the national average. Homeowners spend anywhere from $120 to $830, depending on the size and scope of the system. Residents who only need their dryer vents cleaned can expect to pay around $119.
Clarence was very professional, very courteous and very helpful. He discussed with my husband some of the other services your company offered and it is very likely we will be using them at another time. Very pleased
I had my ducts somewhat cleaned December 22, 2014. The hose of the machine the technitian used did not fit in some of my vents, therefore, he did not clean them. But I still paid $428.00 for the service. I will be calling the company on Monday, and kindly ask them to come back and clean the ducts they did not as they did not fullfill their part of the service.
“Honesty is everything with these people. They checked all the vents connected to my dryers and said I didn’t need any cleaning of the ducts since they were all clean. Two other companies gave me price per vent without looking at the job. The gutter maintence earned my future business through honesty”
Unless you have mold or some sudden illness you think might be related to the ducts, better leave well enough alone. I regret using a coupon for a $69 heating service “tune up”. The only substantial thing I noticed is them replacing the furnace filter with one of MY filters next to the furnace, and I had replace it less than a month prior.
Our professionals are IICRC trained and certified by the American Drying Institute. We utilize truck-mounted duct cleaning equipment that dislodges dirt and other debris. Then we use a high powered vacuum with sixteen 10-foot bags that take up the entire back end and allow for maximum airflow at all times.
I had both of our furnaces cleaned and inspected. The 3 gentleman were on time, looked professional and best of all walked me through the entire process. If you are looking for a reliable service that promises what they quote…look no further.
To find companies that provide duct cleaning services, check your Yellow Pages under “duct cleaning” or contact the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) at the address and phone number in the information section located at the end of this guidance. Do not assume that all duct cleaning service providers are equally knowledgeable and responsible. Talk to at least three different service providers and get written estimates before deciding whether to have your ducts cleaned. When the service providers come to your home, ask them to show you the contamination that would justify having your ducts cleaned.
Commercial systems are often customized to fit the building they serve. They are almost guaranteed to feature added components, and will need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The more difficult the construction is to the more you can expect to pay.
I paid $49 for a groupon. When the guy came today, he did an inspection first and said the ductwork first needed to be treated for mold; $348 for a spray that would last 8 months or $680 for an UV light purifier that would last 2 years. Also, the furnace needed to be cleaned for another $260. When I told him to just clean the ductwork, he said I would owe an additional $305 because the groupon was only good for 1 return and I had 2. I sent him packing with no services performed. Thankfully I am only out of $49! I will complain to groupon.
I’m a heating and air conditioning contractor. I’ve been in the trade for over 15 years. I’ve witnessed numerous duct cleaning projects and talked with many duct cleaners. Duct cleaning as it’s usually promoted is a fraud. Most duct cleaners claim to deliver cleaner air. They deliver exactly the opposite. The studies on duct cleaning prove it, including a May 1998 study sponsored by NADCA and the EPA! The stories are compelling, but they can come up with stories that “prove” anything they want. Internet searches are dominated by results from those who are paid to tell you that duct cleaning is worthwhile. Search a little more and you’ll find the truth.
2. Clean inside basement registers. Often duct work will include registers installed throughout the system to distribute air to the basement. If you remove these registers, you’ll gain even further access to the main trunk line.
Michael D. Vinick, President at Duct & Vent Cleaning of America, Inc. is regarded as an industry leader, joining the organization in its early stages in 1990, as one of NADCA’s first members. Since then, he has been instrumental in helping the organization grow to over 1,300 members throughout the United States and into an international organization. In April 2015, Michael became President of NADCA.
If you are replacing your air conditioning system, make sure that the unit is the proper size for your needs and that all ducts are sealed at the joints. A unit that is too big will cycle on and off frequently, resulting in poor moisture removal, particularly in areas with high humidity. Also make sure that your new system is designed to manage condensation effectively.
Bee’s Air Duct Cleaning Denver could also be called an HVAC system cleaning.  Every one of our duct cleanings includes cleaning every part of your system that air passes through; the trunk, all supply and return vents and your furnace. This is a big difference between Bee’s and “the other guys.” The furnace is the central and most expensive element in your HVAC system. When the furnace is clean, it runs more efficiently saving you money on your monthly utility bills and it last longer which saves you from having to prematurely replace the furnace. When you call for a quote, furnace cleaning will be included in the price of your air duct cleaning. We also offer furnace and a/c maintenance services. with your duct cleaning, however, it is worthwhile to note that warranties on your furnace and a/c may be affected if you do not use the HVAC company that installed your system to provide routine maintenance.
Linda Wetzel of Shaker Heights, Ohio, says she was skeptical about air duct cleaning until a friend told her it had improved her allergies. “I figured common sense said, if there’s dust on the table, there has to be dust in the vents,” Wetzel says.
The Carpet and Rug Institute awarded Sears the Platinum Seal of Approval, which is the Highest Level of Performance for a Carpet Cleaning System. This deep-cleaning process removes harmful allergens, dust particles, and other debris that settles in the carpet.
However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.
Clean the grilles in your ceiling. If you can’t reach them with the vacuum or screwdriver, use a broom to attack the dust. Remember that if you haven’t cleaned them for a long time, you will want to protect yourself from all the dust and debris that will fall down by wearing a dust mask.
No one has addressed mfg homes and doesn’t seem any of the comments are from people in So CA which of course does make a difference as my dust comes from the outside not from the vents. My windows are open pretty much 365 days a year. Secondly mfg homes don’t have basements or attics I keep mine clean with my vacuum as they are only about 2 ft deep. I purchased my home 10 yrs ago and it is a high end home but have never had a problem. I clean my furnace filter about twice a month as I have cats and most everything in there is cat fur. I am not saying they don’t ever need to be cleaned but I am questioning mfg homes, I also clean my own filters in my AC unit outside as the HVAC guy told me too he QUATITY they would sell. I use this same company every year now for my tune up and inspection which takes them about 10 minutes. Not a bad return for them and I don’t mind the $79 fee. If anyone has more info than this on mfg homes please let me know!
9.         Once all vents are cleaned, we clean the main trunk ducts. We start at the far end of the trunk duct, away from the vacuum. Typically, all trunk ducts are mechanically brushed, air-whipped, and air-washed. The brushing and cleaning method is dictated by the construction of your duct system. Every home is different, so different tools are used to accommodate this. All the agitated material is caught in the air stream of the vacuum and sent down the line. If your main trunk duct is accessible, we typically install duct access every 15 to 20 feet to make sure we are removing EVERYTHING from the duct system.
Certifications: The cleaning company should be certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which sets standards for HVAC system cleaning. The EPA does not certify duct cleaners, so avoid anyone making that claim. Check for relevant licenses and insurance – some states require a license for duct cleaning while others don’t.

im buying a house on west coast of Fl close to the water. The inspector said there seemed to be mold at some registers & at some connections in the attic. The pics did show wat appeared to be mold & said its common. What do i do now? im very low on money, looking for an idea. i can replace all the flex tubing in the attic.
20 yrs ago I bought the house I am in and a Central H/A was installed at that time. At the beginning of ea season I have the unit serviced. Every yr since I have owned the house I have had to have freon added and been told that I must have a freon leak. Fast forward to this yr when I hired a new company to do the service. They went up into the attic as part of their overall servicing. Nobody else has ever done that. He came down showing me pics on his camera phone of ducts that were not even connected to anything and in my estimation have probably been laying there for 20 yrs. Of course he fixed this. I have not needed freon this year either. I have been complaining to friends about the huge amount of dust and how I can’t keep up with the cleaning away of it for a long time. Now it makes so much sense. To me it is like that duct work was just up there laying around and every time my unit was blowing, all the insulation, debris, dust and whatever else over the years was just randomly filling up those ducts. What now that they are re-connected? Will it be better? Or am I someone that needs to have my ducts cleaned? I am so confused after reading all these comments. Can one of you experts tell me what you would do before I spend a bunch of money that I don’t really have? Thank you for any input you can provide. Also, feel free to respond to email address [email protected]
What about ringworm? If the fungus is as contagious as doctors warn, and the spores can live several months, doesn’t it make sense to spray some sort of fungus killer into the HVAC system to kill the spores that it has sucked in from the air? Duct cleaning would not be helpful at all here; these spores are microscopic and it could actually spread them further. But given how severely contagious ringworm is, body and especially scalp, does anyone make an aerosol product that will clean the system and kill the fungus? One the resident can use, not call an HVAC company; you can’t do that when you are in an apartment. I hear it’s not the same as mold, it is much more difficult. Truth?
Removing dust and debris from ventilation might require you to hire a professional to get down on the floor if you have floor vents, so be sure to speak with them about your furniture and other valuables near the vents to avoid any damages or problems.

You may be familiar with air ducts that are constructed of sheet metal. However, many modern residential air duct systems are constructed of fiber glass duct board or sheet metal ducts that are lined on the inside with fiber glass duct liner. Since the early 1970’s, a significant increase in the use of flexible duct, which generally is internally lined with plastic or some other type of material, has occurred.
3.         Access openings are cut into the main trunk duct work in strategic locations. Don’t worry; this is normal and allows us to properly remove the debris from your system. These access openings are large enough to accommodate our vacuum hoses, which start at 10″ in diameter. This is done as applicable. If ductwork is not accessible, we open up the HVAC system to access the plenums or areas of the main duct work.

Concealed behind your walls and mostly ignored, your air ducts serve as vital pathways that deliver warm and cool air throughout your home during the year. While they may be unseen, your air ducts are working nearly year round, whenever you have your air conditioner or heater running. Attached to your HVAC system, air ducts transfer the air from these systems throughout your home. What many homeowners don’t realize, though, is that your air ducts, in nearly constant use, continually accumulate dust, grime, debris, pet dander and allergens throughout the year. In fact, according to National Air Duct Cleaners Association the average American home produces 40 pounds of dust per year! 1
One of the best ways to know if your ducts or vents need to be cleaned is to just check them. Your eyes will be able to check for indications of mold, dust or pollen buildup. You might also be able to smell the presence of mold, which would be a clear indicator. Ductwork will have some buildup of dust, since the return registrars pull air back in. However, this doesn’t mean your ducts have too much debris, and you can easily clean them with a duster or vacuum.
Quality and price should come hand in hand, a too-good-to-be-true price for an efficient air duct cleaning will not give you the quality that you wanted. Some older air ducts may contain asbestos in the insulation, register boots or other areas. Asbestos removal absolutely requires specialized procedures which will add to the total cost, depending on the complexity and extent of the problem.
BTW I tell my customers up front that we do not clean anything on the furnace itself and recommend they have their HVAC people come in for that portion. In reading your disingenuous comments am hoping that I have never sent one of my valued customers to any of you.

Hi, my home office a/c vent has been blowing out blackish granular particles. It only happens with this particular vent. I’ve read lighting candles tend to do something like this… I do light candles every day. Can someone help me with what I should do? Thanks.
hi tom im in the air duct cleaning for 20 years you where scamed,,it does not cost to treat mold 300 dollars,if thiers mold in ducts it would not be at the regersters only,,sorry,,i just read your post,,,anthony
The cooling coils the air comes into contact with appear to need UV-C lights on them in humid climates. That’s the biggest thing. If the ducts have never been cleaned, then getting that done goes without saying. But those coils need to be cleaned, disinfected, and then UV-C light(s) installed to prevent mold & bacteria build-up in the future on them. That appears to be chiefly responsible for the dirty laundry and/or sour milk smell coming from forced-air AC systems in humid regions.
I have had the ducts cleaned at my last two homes when I had the furnace and air condtioning systems replaced. I figured the furnace will be new and clean, so have the ducts cleaned too. I do have good filtration systems on the new units as well which I do change filters regularly.
At $39 will admit (after asking them several times) that they typically use an electric-powered shop vacuum to clean your ducts. You might wonder how a shop vacuum can remove possibly several pounds of grime?

Your ductwork is a network of connected tubes that distribute cooled or heated air to the rooms throughout your commercial building. Basic cleaning and maintenance of commercial HVAC air ducts and air systems should be completed at least every two years. However, if you are unsure when to have them cleaned, you have come to the right place. Here are some dirty air duct indicators will tell you when it is time to have your air ducts cleaned:
You have covered all necessary points on your blog. Dirty ducts blow dust, lint and other debris into every room of your home but sometimes you have to call professional for all duct cleaning services.
He proceeded to clean each heat register by removing the grille and blasting it with an air pressure hose toward the duct opening thinking that the dust would magically be sucked inside. In one room this caused a ceiling smoke detector to go off because the excess dust fooled it into thinking there was smoke. I put my hand in front of a register he wasn’t working on and could hardly feel a suction. Although we discussed how I open and close damper doors, I realized later that he never checked, opened or adjusted them during the cleaning. He could have closed all but the one he was working on in order to increase suction results. His next step was to blast air into the duct and then attach a “squid-like” device that slapped around inside the duct as far as he could reach. This is important! In a newer house, ducts have long straight runs from the furnace. In older houses like mine they can turn and twist. In fact, the duct we have a problem with runs straight up from the basement inside a wall and turns 90 degrees into a soffit for three feet then into two 90 degree turns to get into the floor joist area for another two feet and finally a 90 degree turn up to the second floor register. When he cleaned this one he could only get three feet into the register with the hose or squid because of the turns. That was the case with most. Hardly what could be described as a decent cleaning.
2. I would bet a considerable amount of money that if I were to inspect 12 year old duct work at Nicolas’s home, it would have a considerable amount of dust, debris and buildup. No furnace has the capability to filter heavy dirt and dust particles, and settles into the return air duct recirculating the same dust over and over.
Preventing against air leakage is great, but the only way to keep dust and debris out of a duct system would be to completely seal off the return-air side of the system, which would render the system useless. Cold-air returns will always pull dust and other particles into the system. A high-MERV rated filter is definitely a good idea, but it does nothing to keep the return side of the system clean. Definitely agree though to use foil tape to seal seams, etc. Duct tape dries out over time and as it does can actually add more particles to the air.
Here’s the problem with those $99 specials (we’ve actually seen them advertised for as low as $49): What typically happens in those scenarios is the company offers this great price, usually in the form of a coupon, to get in the door. Once inside, they almost immediately find other problems — black mold is a common scare tactic used by unscrupulous contractors — or they try to upsell the homeowner on additional services. Those who fall prey to these air duct cleaning scams often pay upward of $600, even into the thousands.

“why is air duct cleaning important |air duct cleaning system”

Our technician was extremely kind and courteous. He explained the procedure very well and cleaned up well after he was done with his work. The furnace and air ducts looked significantly better than before and there was a noticeable difference in the performance of our HVAC system.
There are many things that people can do themselves in regards to HVAC when given the needed information. I am glad you find this useful. I have and will continue to publish hubs that not only show people things about HVAC they can do themselves but will also save very significant amounts of money. HVAC is an expensive service so anything you can learn to do yourself will save a minimum of $125 as this is the common base rate of a licensed service trip.

“Provided services promised.  I noticed immediate improvement in the air flow and quality in the house.  The heat/air unit was working less and the next energy bill went down.  We are breathing easier.”
We moved to a house built in 1965 from a 1915 house with a dirt basement. Against what I anticipated, the 1965 house was much dustier. It was like felt on top of everything. I cleaned and cleaned and it did become less dusty over time. We then found out a cat lady with over 2 dozen cats lived in the house in the past. We then had to get our furnace replaced and I was able to look down some of the duct work, the dirt and debris was 3-5 inches deep. Additionally, the basement ducts were entirely plugged with debris including dirt, seeds, ants, toys, etc. I had already removed what I could from those. We had our ducts cleaned last year, and the dust in the house is greatly reduced. Also have lost the runny nose I got after moving here. There are duct cleaning con artists out there, but ours did a good job.
Dallas, Texas, the ninth-largest city in the country, features a glitzy skyline and cosmopolitan lifestyle along with a friendliness that’s hard to find in many large metropolises. Plenty of cultural amenities, a vibrant arts scene, and a delicious array of restaurants make Dallas an appealing destination for residents and visitors alike. The sprawl and spread of the city’s neighborhoods and suburbs translates to long commutes for most city residents.
Despite such anecdotal experiences, there’s no scientific evidence that regular residential air duct cleaning improves air quality, according to a 1997 brochure published by the Environmental Protection Agency. Laureen Burton, senior scientist in the EPA Indoor Environments Division, says that while the document is nearly two decades old, the science hasn’t changed and the agency stands by its recommendations.
I can’t believe the number of people saying a good properly installed central heating system never needs to be cleaned. Maybe they live in hermetically sealed cells? One look into a cold air return and you can see that it definitely needs periodic cleaning. The air in the house “always” has some dust in it and that’s where it ends up. We just had ours cleaned and I saw what came out of it, disgusting. But always ask if they use the “air whip” to sweep/beat the inside of the metal duct. If not, don’t bother. These folks used a little whip on the end of a pressure hose and swept the entire length of all the ducts. I have lighted bore scope that allowed me to see into the duct after he was done and it was spic and span. But do change your filters often, 2 or 3 times a year.
In addition, the black dust was found in most of the heat registers. He could rub it off on his fingers but did nothing but spray compressed air on it which didn’t make it disappear since it wasn’t loose. Also, in the register in the basement he described the black dust as being oily. The reality of that situation is that I had the AC on until the morning of the service and minutes after he snaked the hoses in my back door it started raining. The basement register had condensation from the humidity all over it. It was not oily but wet. He asked for an old towel and wiped it out. Never saw anything so black – because I never had to clean soot. That is what I have in my ducts. Soot from years of the old coal furnace.
I forgot about a pot of sweet water I had on the stove to boil. When I finally smelled it the kitchen and dining room I=was smoke filled. I mean thick smoke. I opened doors and windows for a few hours to remove the smoke but the smell is still here and terrible. I had to use the AC and that smell started coming out of the vents. Now what do I do? I have COPD emphysema so I have to be very careful about what I inhale. I already have inhaled too much smoke from all of this which has hurt my lungs even more. I can’t afford for them to get worse over this. How can I get the right person to come out and clean the ducts and furnace or is that the only way to remove that burnt smokey smell. The pot never caught on fire but it sure did produce a lot of smoke. I already have replaced the filter on the furnace. It needed it even though it had just been replaced just last week. All of the products discussed above are registered solely for the purpose of sanitizing the smooth surfaces of unlined (bare) sheet metal ducts. No products are currently registered as biocides for use on fiber glass duct board or fiber glass lined ducts, so it is important to determine if sections of your system contain these materials before permitting the application of any biocide.
Air pollutants are 4 to 7 times higher INDOORS than outdoors! We spend 80-90% of our time inside, increasing the risk for allergies, asthma, breathing problems and lung damage, especially in the young and elderly.
I have been told I need to replace my duct work. Air conditioner froze up, duckwork was full of water, and they had to pierce it to release it. They want $550 to replace. I live in a modular home with crawl space underneath.
The team (yes, two people) took most of the day and thoroughly cleaned everything including the blower wheel, AC coils, condenser outside, registers, boots, trunklines, and plenums. The said they follow the national air duct cleaners assn which requires a huge HEPA-filtered collector while cleaning, rotating brushes in the duct work, air sweeping tools, etc… I thought they were very professional and very thorough! And all at a great price.
Ozone generators use UV light or an electrical discharge to intentionally produce ozone. Ozone is a lung irritant that can cause adverse health effects. At concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone has little effect in removing most indoor air contaminants. Thus, ozone generators are not always safe and effective in controlling indoor air pollutants. Consumers should instead use methods proven to be both safe and effective to reduce pollutant concentrations, which include eliminating or controlling pollutant sources and increasing outdoor air ventilation.
We hired Mr.Duct to clean our dryer vent. Ivan, our technician, was prompt, courteous, and performed a thorough cleaning of our dryer system. I will recommend Mr.Duct to anyone and use them again ourselves!
I had a very satifying experience with the technicians doing my air duct cleaning. I knew every little about the process and it was explained very well and understandable. My house was a mess because I was also getting a carpet cleaning the same day, so furniture was moved around for that, some of it was in the way for the tech’s, they moved it and cleaned up after. My air works better and I sure can tell the difference in air quality.THANK YOU very much… Sear’s Your air duct cleaning Technician’s do a wonderful job! I will surely contact SEARS again for cleaning services…
Very good techs, explained all work before starting the job. Pleased with the work. When they left, no sign that they were ever in the house. I would recommend Andy and Adam to everyone- on top of being good workers, really nice guys!
I am just a homeowner and have absolutely no qualifications, but it seems pretty logical to me that a good cleaning every once a while is just a good practice. It just seems like too vital of a component in a vital system to never clean.
**Do they clean the Air Handler Unit or Furnace? The most important part of your HVAC system is the Air Handler Unit. Will the company you call clean the air handler unit? (Blower, coils, insulation, drainpan)?
If you do have children or spouses who suffer from allergies or reactions to the air turning on, it might be an indication there is something in there making them react. They should speak with their doctors and then get a heating and cooling contractor out if it is recommended that airborne pathogens are the cause of their reaction.
My ducts were filthy, and now they are clean. The two gentleman at my home were polite and they wore covers over their shoes even though their shoes were clean and dry. They moved quickly and efficiently!
The first line of defense against airborne contaminants is to keep a house clean and well ventilated. But for some sensitive people that may not be enough. That’s where air filters come in. Household air filters are available in two basic types: media filters, which create a physical barrier that traps minute particles, and electronic filters, which use a high-voltage charge to attract and capture contaminants. A few air filters are hybrids that combine both methods, and some include activated carbon elements to combat odor.
The response to my online request was the same day I posted (actually just an hour later) I had a quote and set up the appointment for duct and furnace cleaning. Service technicians were very thorough and cleaned up afterwards.
An entire industry has developed to address these issues. It’s called the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) industry, and the backbone of the industry is air duct cleaning. The best companies also provide dryer vent cleaning as an added service that keeps homes safe from fire and fumes.

Duct cleaning has become popular in recent years, with commercial cleaning services popping up everywhere. But is the service worth it, or is it a scam? Here’s some information to help you decide whether or not your home might benefit from having the HVAC ducts in your house cleaned.
The majority of good air duct cleaning companies use outdoor vented equipment, so all of the dust and debris they capture is vented and contained outside the home. A duct cleaner who uses inferior equipment can actually cause more harm by agitating and releasing more dust into your home, or worse, damaging your ductwork.
yes get a good company and pay the price, I found so much dust and dirt and wood and paint chips and bugs and even bottle caps in my ductwork. I hired a major plumbing company who cleaned ductwork and i will say they did an excellent job cleaning my vent. they did miss one point in my ductwork because i still started to see dust all over my furniture and i realized that my retunduct work that was connected with a piece of sheet metal beam which was 16″ across , the contractor that built my condo used a 16″ wide sheet of sheet metal to connect the vent system to my return for the air to return back into my condo. The contractor should have built a 8″ x16″ square duct by 6 feet long to connect my intake to my return instead of using a sheet of sheet metal 16″ wide by using two 3’ sections by 16 inches wide. That was a shor cut which caused a major problem fir me.

“air duct cleaning and sanitizing should i have air duct cleaning”

Has the service provider adequately demonstrated that duct work and plenums are clean? (Plenum is a space in which supply or return air is mixed or moves; can be duct, joist space, attic and crawl spaces, or wall cavity.)
Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., dust) levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space. It is important to keep in mind that dirty air ducts are only one of many possible sources of particles that are present in homes. Pollutants that enter the home both from outdoors and indoor activities such as cooking, cleaning, smoking, or just moving around can cause greater exposure to contaminants than dirty air ducts. Moreover, there is no evidence that a light amount of household dust or other particulate matter in air ducts poses any risk to your health.
Let’s face it: all air duct would be most efficiently cleaned by simply crawling inside the ducts and hand hand vacuuming with a brush. But since that is not practical in most applications, the Rotobrush cleaning process was developed. It is the onlyself-contained method that brushes and vacuums the debris at the same time, similar to contact cleaning by hand. Dirt is brushed loose inside the air duct and inmediately swept up by the powerful dual vacuums. This system eliminates the need for a central collection unit, dirt and debris do not have to travel throught the entire HVAC system to be collected.
In a study by Hong Kong Baptist University, research showed a positive correlation between the accumulation of skin squames in air-cooling units and complaints of a urine-like smell in the air-conditioned areas. Skin squa …
• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Ok what you said is true but in most cases ducts are in a duct flex format, and knowing that the dust in people’s flex duct is just surface dust, any real debris that are in the duct itself will result in very little to no air flow which will keep your unit from performing properly, but if it is true allergy reasons then replacing your duct system is better for overall better air quality, plus if you do pay attention to the warranty on flexible duct is that it only has a 10 year warranty and typically only lasts for 20 years so do your research before having a duct cleaning, and to add one more thing if your duct work is completely metal and you can’t see visible insulation then your duct on the inside has insulation inside of it, if you replace that with duct work that is clean metal on the inside and wrapped with insulation on the outside then it will further reduce the air bourne fiberglass and dust.
I purchased one of those Amazon air duct cleaning coupons for 49.99. When the company showed up, they removed the vent closest to the air intake and immediately told me I needed $1800.00 for all new duct work. They said they could not clean the system until new duct work was installed. I thanked them and said I would give them a call. The only call I made was to Amazon to get a refund. I know I didn’t need new duct work. Be careful to not fall for unscrupulous salesmen and their pitches and scare tactics.
You’ll never see Armstrong use a Shop Vac vacuum or Rotobrush© in your home.  We use an assortment of specialized vacuum equipment designed specifically for air duct cleaning.  This includes high powered vacuum equipment, air compressors, mechanical brushing tools, air whips and blades.
Over time, harmful contaminants such as dust, dirt, pet dander and bacteria become trapped in your home’s air duct system. Without regular air duct cleaning, your air ducts can become hazardous to your health, diminishing the quality of the air in your home and contributing to illness and allergies. No matter how hard you try to give your home a fresh and clean atmosphere, it requires a professional team with powerful equipment to properly clean your air duct system.
I had a company come and clean my air ducts (10 registers- 4 intakes with 2 trunk lines). I was okay with the price of $400. Then, they said I needed to have the ducts sanitized and disinfected and was charged another $360. I was told this process was $18 per duct. That’s 14 ducts multiplied by the $18 which was another $252. When I went to pay however – they said there were more ducts and when I protested he cut me off and was very adamant about the payment. I know I should have tried harder but felt intimidated. I’m confused – was $260 a fair amount?

Contaminants: If noticeable debris, pet hair, odors, or other contaminants are being released into the room through the ducts after the registers have been cleaned and vacuumed; then the ducts may need to be cleaned.
This is my first time taking care of house ,It belong to my sister she is sick.I want to do a good Job.my daughter is  staying with us and the room she’s in is very hot.I need someone who is very good and not so costly. And have great reviews.
I’m researching several different blogs on the controversy conversation regards to duct cleaning. First my experiance in the hvac industry , so it will maybe shed a understanding . I’m age 45 I have worked full time since the age of 15 Now with that been said, I’ve worked every part of hvac their is. Bottom line, i don’t care how many licence or certifications a person has. Or how popular the company is. They send one person who is the bosses right hand man and a helper who doesn’t care about what he’s doing just looking for a paycheck. Leaving the right hand man with the task at hand. So think about it , the company that is telling you go with the certified companies and brag they are real duct cleaning companies are realy selling you on the fancy equipment they use. Simple watch the guys in action. most can record every second of before and after video. That tells it all. And just because someone as I read other companies say including Angie’s list , run from low bids is total bull. Use common sence. If they say 49 bucks your not using common sence. If they say 1000 bucks for a standard house under 2000 sq foot. Again common sence. Indoor coil cleaning, drain cleaning, return air cleaning, blower removal cleaning, grills removed and washed Not wiped off. Furnace or airhandler cleaning. Return air grills removed washed, outside condencer or heat pump non acid washed. 800.00 bucks. I do it everyday. When we finish the customer knows what they have paid for, because we want our customers to be involved as they want to be. Far as mold inspectors on staff doesn’t mean a whole lot, when only a lab can truly confirm that. Then it’s a total different ball game. Good luck pic a company that allows you to be involved and video proof. That gives you the customer peice of mind.
Portable air cleaners generally contain a fan to circulate the air and use one or more of the air cleaning devices discussed above. Portable air cleaners may be moved from room to room and used when continuous and localized air cleaning is needed. They may be an option if a home is not equipped with a central HVAC system or forced air heating system.
I recently did some remodeling and figured I’d get the air ducts cleaned in our 12 year old home. After obtaining 4 estimates between $572 and a whopping $3,075 for 25 vents and 2 air handlers, I knew I was in for a ride. I read through this blog and decided to use a $79 inspection camera I just found online (Home Depot) to take a look at all my ducts by removing the ceiling grilles first and then try to get into the ducts from the other end. From what I have just learned here, I believe that will take care of my “concerns”.

Had my air ducts cleaned with company named WellDuct in Edison New Jersey, total cost was $450. Have a two floor condo, technicians said the system was never cleaned, it took them about three hours. Since I am just moving in, I can not tell the difference. They collected about 3-4 pounds of dust, is that normal amount or should be more?
Maintain and protect your beautiful hardwood floors. Sears has hardwood floor cleaning equipment that will extract the dirt left behind or pushed into floor crevices from other do-it-yourself wood floor cleaning methods.
Air duct intakes are cleaned by utilizing a HEPA filtered commercial grade backpack vacuum. The air duct intake grills are usually covered with dust, and don’t contain as much microbiological growth as the outlet vents.
“Got a phone estimate with the details of work that would be performed. They were punctual, cordial, and professional. Very careful around the house and cleaned up afterwards. Couldn’t ask for better service.”
I have filed a claim with the BBB because this company is a scam. They charged me $1,590 and their initial coupon stated whole house for $89.00. I live in a small townhouse. They claimed I had mold, but another company came out the next day, and felt that there was no mold. I never had musty smell in my house nor alot of dust; ever any type of water damage; I should have researched this more before answering in ad in the Penny Saver. Big mistake on my part, and now I’m trying to get reimbursed for at least half of what I spent.
Pastor B – First, thank you for the kind words! The answer to the first 2 questions in a nutshell is yes. Running the fan however by itself is probably the better idea to dry the system a bit. That said, it isn’t a solution, just helps a bit. I would attempt to find the root of the problem and take care of that to end the issue. Adding things like air cleaner and UV light to the system can help long term with some of this but having the a/c coil cleaned and checked (the indoor evaporator coil) is a good start if you’ve not had that done before. If the smell is coming from the crawlspace and getting pulled into the air stream is the issue then sealing the ductwork with a mastic may also be a good measure and is something you can do yourself with a bucket of mastic, a paint brush, pair of rubber gloves and long sleeves….you don’t want to get it tangled up in your arm hair and such. It can be a difficult task to get out. 🙂 I hope this helps and thank you for reading!
We had Mr. Duct out to perform an air duct cleaning for our residential home and they were great. The price was the same as the one given over the phone and we were very pleased with the results, which they proved through a video camera sweep at the end of the service.
This is where i found where the major problem was for the dust problem in my home. I took down the sheet metal that was 16″ wide down by taking the screws out that keep it attached and when i took it down i, could not beleive the amountbof dust that was up there, inhad to put on breathing nasks to actually scoop out all the cust with my hads and then i used my shop vac then bleached everything, i would say that i filled up a 5 gallon maybe more not counting all the dust that was attached to the side of the beams that was all wood , because the contractor did not actually build a 16″ wide return all out of metal , butvinstead used the sheet metal plate as a short cut to make a suare box using my beams in my basement to a suare box. I was told contractors do that often and i feel that should be outlawed because it caused my sinus and allery problems, nwhich almost caused me to die. so everyone should make sure their ductwork was made properly. Yes seal it . Cover all openings. So it was not the contractors fault that my vents still had dust, in them, he was afraid tomgetvon top of my pool table to try to get iside the short cut ductwork with the 16″ wide sheet metal. To everyone, make sure you clean your vent system. And make sure you could see it visually like i did , neither i or the contractor had no clue the problem was right above my pool table because of the make shift ductwork. The contactor shoul have made a squrae duct like the rest instead of using my beams as a short cut. That could be whyba lot of people start to have major allergy problems and maybe even ashma.so coverall holes to prevent dust to be taken in and all bugs etc. then make sure you clean your ductwork as you see reasonable, they say every 5 years , but i say evry 2 to 3 years, but you can do it yoursely.. You need a good air hose and suction vacum like a shop vac, do a little research. I invented something a while back like 18 to 20 years ago , and now it is on the market to help homeowners such as ourselves with this dust problem. I cannont say anymore because i have to make sure that it was not my research and idea that solved my problem and for all the others that are using what i invented ..there was nothing on the patent search that i hired an invention company to do, back then. Once yor vents are cleaned properly younwill be very happybif you are an allery sufferer. Stop the children for throwing things into the ductwork and sweeping things into the ductwork, keeping your vent system is clean once youbclean it right the first time, just maintain it , you dhould keepmthe hvac system clean such as coils etc it truly helps, people vome into my condo and they cannont beleive how cold it igets and how my system works so well. it is because i have my whole duct system sealed outsid with the duct sealant and my coils i vleaned my self and take the time that the furnase fan is cleaned because that could have a lot of major dust attached to it, mine had a lot of caked on dust it was like hard dirt. Yxounwill save on allergy bills nasal sprays, i wish I could say more because incould say something to really keep your whole duct system clean for years once you do a first good cleaning of intake and return vents. until i email one of the major companies to see where they got my idea from. Intrulybhope it was not from the invention company i hired years ago who did the patent search for my idea. I becam
I was told that 15 out vents would be cleaned and one main vent. the guy came over and gave me an estimate of $500. I had acquired a groupon for $49. the guy said just doing the out vents and one main vent would accomplish nothing. Now I am in dispute with the groupon people for a refund which they won’t give and have to go ahead and waste the money and let them do it. Is their doing the 15 outvents and one main one going to accomplish anything?
There are many reasons to clean the air ducts in your home. When ducts are clean, the heating system lasts longer (because there is less dirt wearing out its components), we dust less often, and the air we breathe at home is cleaner. For those of us with allergies, this should be a welcome improvement.

I agree about the coupons. While they are often useful, in our case, we (who usually are more intelligent than this) were talked into a more expensive cleaning that ultimately added up to about 900.00. After reading Angie’s articles, we realized what a silly mistake we made. Next time, we will do our research.
AIRDUCT CLEAN has been specializing in residential & business air duct cleaning for many years. We are a company that is focused on safeguarding your home & business against pollutants that are often overlooked and we do so by air duct cleaning, vent disinfecting, dryer vent cleaning, and more.
Although i love to burn candles, depending on the type your asking for problems big ones! At work one day i had been talking with co workers about these black shadows that were appearing on my ceilings and higher wall areas. They seemed to in the corners and along the stud supports , i could even see what i thought to be where all had been nailed. There would be dark shadows perfectly straight across my ceiling and then real dark circels every few inches within the lines. I thought it was the propane heat but learned quickly that oil heat will do that but not normally propane. A co worker brought me a magazine with a huge article about candles and what actually burns off them when lit, an ashy soot that is attracted to the areas on walls and ceilings that omit the most heat or warmth, of course where the drywall and studs meet and corners of the room. Its been about 8 years since i painted the entire house. I started bending to my love for candles again in the last 3 years, surprise i will be spending part of my summer re painting again!! No more candles ,well maybe at the holidays LOL
Indoor air quality didn’t become an issue until we decided we needed airtight, energy-efficient homes. We’ve lowered our energy bills, but we’ve trapped pollutants inside our homes and offices. What’s in your air ducts? Dust, pollen, animal dander, mouse droppings, dust mites, drywall dust, insulation, fungus and bacteria. Each time the fan turns on, it forces them into your living environment for you to breathe… morning, noon and night. And, if your vent covers are located on the floor, you would be surprised what finds its way into your duct system.
Violet Shrop – Thank you and no. You don’t want the power off while cleaning registers…you want the fan running. Now once you get to the furnace itself, at the end and you’re ready to change the filter and wrap up…yes. Turn off the power.

The EPA says that indoor air is often many times more polluted than outdoor air. Many of these contaminants get stuck or even grow in the ductwork, possibly getting re-circulated into the air you breathe. According to the EPA, “Contaminated central air handling systems can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew and other sources of biological contaminants and can then distribute these contaminants through the home.”
I need help or really my lungs need help. Who do I call here in Indpls IN.
Well, if it’s just a piece, I’d throw it away. It’s likely a scrap piece that’s been in there longer than you may have realized and in your cleaning, worked it’s way to visibility. Unfortunately, much debris found in duct is from construction and people using the duct as a dustpan. If you don’t see any parts missing or holes in the ducting, then just toss it and know that they’re that much cleaner.
Knowledge about air duct cleaning is in its early stages, so a blanket recommendation cannot be offered as to whether you should have your air ducts in your home cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urges you to read this document in it entirety as it provides important information on the subject.
I guess I should present my credentials first, I am a 30 year veteran of the heating and cooling industry. I started at the bottom and have participated in every area of the trade. Installer, service, maint. Ownership, rep, territory manager and so on. A forced air duct system is a large vacume. Like your vacume it has an air intake (return air) and an exhaust (supply registers). A filter just like a vacume (located next to furnace or air handler). Now I want you to visualize something. Put your head inside your vacume cleaner and breath. Get the This is what your duct work looks like. Do you clean your vacume when it’s dirty? If it’s full and the filter is dirty you lose performance and it starts poluting the air you breathe. It’s common sense. I recommend hiring a duct cleaning outfit that you have researched to be honest, background checked, drug tested, insured, and highly recommended by your piers in the area. The service is a necessity, but like everything, it should be done by a qualified company.
The “interior Fogger” works well for a short period of time, but because of the amount of DEEP Mildew smell in my particular car, it seemed to only “mask” the odor and failed to remove the lingering musty smell which returned after a day or so. I used the second can in my daily driver and it worked great in there and has lasted to this day since I employed it over a month ago I ended up finding a much affordable solution that solved the problem: Distilled White Vinegar applied with a 2-gallon pump sprayer. Yes, your car will smell like a salad for a few days, but the Vinigar smell does ventually dissipate taking away ALL the bad odors with it. Spray the Distilled White Vinegar on all surfaces (except electrical), and use a very soft bristle brush to scrub surface areas clean. Don’t be afraid to soak your headliner, carpets (I replaced my very old floor carpet for new as noted) and seats (Vinyl) – I haven’t tried cloth or leather seats yet so experiment in a small non-conspicuous area first. I actually removed all my seats and soaked the cushions from underneath with ALOT of Distilled White Vinegar from the pump sprayer. Odor Problem solved.
A do-it-yourself approach will only scratch the surface because it is hard to reach some of the ventilation running underneath the floor or into the wall. Although it may help in clearing some of the dust and debris, you really need a professional to guarantee your system is truly spotless. The proper procedure involves the use of a powerful vacuum system with multi-brush attachments designed to loosen debris and feed into the suction. Particles are then blown outside of the house or passed through a HEPA filter inside.
#4 If you see an ad for a service that seems to good to be true, It 100% is. They use these ads to get in the door to sell you $100’s of services that truthfully you will not get even if you pay for them. It is a scam trust me I deal with these guys all year long here in Florida.
9. Replace furnace filter. Buying a better filter will definitely cut down on the dust in your home. But the better the filter, the more often you should change it; a dirty filter restricts the airflow to the fan, which results in the blower motor running hotter and reducing its lifespan. How often you should change your filter depends on your home, your pets, and your location.
It’s 11 years plus in the industry I have only had to sanitize two systems both were slab systems that were in concrete and could be cleaned with a different method than normal duct cleaning. We were able to use water to rinse out the disinfectant. Would you use a chemical on anything else you use to eat or drink with and not rinse it off? The ducts in your home should be thought of as your homes heart and lungs and breathe the same air that you do. And just like us we wouldn’t use bad chemicals in our lungs and heart.
I recently replaced my 44 year old furnace. Over the years we have had several construction projects inside the home. For many years breathing the heated air from the duct work caused excessive sneezing, sinus issues, and lung irritation. . The heat smelled like dust. To maximize air quality I added a humidifier, MERV-11 filter, and UV light onto the new furnace. To further improve air quality, I had the ducts cleaned and sanitized. I took before and after pictures of the inside of each return and output duct. They were filthy before, and sparkling clean and fresh after the procedure. Now when running the system, clean sanitized air flows through my whole house. A huge difference. It will make sleeping and being indoors during the winter months far more tolerable. I use window air conditioners, and run the system in the summer to keep the house air clean and fresh on hot summer days too. It works! Great decision!
Cover your outdoor unit in winter with plywood (Photo 1) to prevent damage from falling ice. Don’t wrap it with plastic or any other material that completely blocks airflow. Moisture that’s trapped inside will promote corrosion.
Hi I clean air ducts cleaning in Wichita,KS and it’s true you get what you paid for… and I’m sorry I have to pay for my own gas, if my vehicle breaks down, I have to pay for it… I’m sorry I only get paid comission, I do have to eat, sleep, wash my clothes, but if you buy a coupon and you just wanna do the basic, that’s fine. Like the old saying goes “time is money!!” It’s the sad truth. But of you do spend some extra money believe me I will do my very best to make sure your happy. Every single thing I have read are negative what about the positive, I am a person that takes GREAT PRIDE in what I do.
The most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is to employ Source Removal methods of cleaning. This requires a contractor to place the system under negative pressure, through the use of a specialized, powerful vacuum. While the vacuum draws air through the system, devices are inserted into the ducts to dislodge any debris that might be stuck to interior surfaces. The debris can then travel down the ducts to the vacuum, which removes it from the system and the home.
My father started in the business of home comfort back in 1968, an I around 1986. We still don’t have a duct cleaning machine. I am sure there are always applications for all tools in this industry. However I missed where anyone talked about where dust even comes from……….We do not have these little dust machines sitting in a corner puffing out little clouds of dust….soooo where does it come from?
Pollen, dust, dander, dust, mould spores and other floating light particles in the atmosphere at home may flow through your heating system and cooling system. Collected filth is accessible setback within their rooms and to return in the air flow. Floorings and furniture dusty but the air quality in your house can deteriorate. If you’ve got respiratory difficulties, may have trouble breathing. You might be exposed to pollen through the entire year, if you have problems with seasonal allergies. Filthy ducts are also efficient in cooling system and heat. The filter may get a high energy bill and clogs quicker, so the system has to work harder to move air.
