“air duct cleaning facts _air duct cleaning is it worth it”

Good question. Common sense dictates that even an extra-long hose cannot physically reach the entire length of a 20-ft. air duct. And a small, low-powered hose will not suck up large debris. No wonder they only charge $39. You get what you pay for.
Despite such anecdotal experiences, there’s no scientific evidence that regular residential air duct cleaning improves air quality, according to a 1997 brochure published by the Environmental Protection Agency. Laureen Burton, senior scientist in the EPA Indoor Environments Division, says that while the document is nearly two decades old, the science hasn’t changed and the agency stands by its recommendations.
There is no standard measurement for the effectiveness of PCO cleaners. The use of PCO cleaners in homes is limited because currently available catalysts are ineffective in destroying gaseous pollutants from indoor air. Some PCO cleaners fail to destroy pollutants completely and instead produce new indoor pollutants that may cause irritation of the eyes, throat and nose.
Our mission is to help our customers develop a successful and profitable service business supporting their needs with quality equipment at a fair price, supply them with knowledge about the indoor air quality industry and offer them continuous support in a long-term relationship.

Development of mold and mildew. Air ducts that are exposed to moisture, such as most in the Dallas area, can grow dangerous mold and mildew; that build-up can subject you and your family to airborne toxins if it’s not treated properly.
Sounds like your first hvac company was ripping you off. Ask your new company to go to your coil and see if there is a leak. If there isn’t the last company was just lining their pockets. If you have had ducts unhooked for a long time I would recommend duct cleaning, trust me I’m not a fan of duct cleaning myself. I have done hvac for 20 yrs. in GA. When I just bought a home built in 1996, we had all the ducts replaced immediately.
Forest Hills- Forest Hills boasts safe streets, large lots, and easy access to nearby amenities such as shops, restaurants, parks, and White Rock Lake. This neighborhood’s location – locals refer to it as being “10 minutes from anywhere” – is another appealing factor, with vibrant areas such as the Arts District just minutes away. This neighborhood is a growing area with lots of different architectural styles and pricier-than-average homes.
Hi guys if your not convinced yet that duct cleaning is a waste of time. I’m a HVAC business owner install heaters and air conditioners. Simple facts if you have an old system get a new return air fitted with a filter it will catch all the dirt and dust. If you still have as many do black flecks and stuff coming through it is the lining inside your ducting that has perished. So somewhere you have a hole or very old ducting. If you had rats etc its a hole somewhere. To clean, stick your vacuum in the and push the hose as far as it will go this gets 99% of toys and coins fur and alike. Think about it if the object is not heavy it will come out the duct when unit is on. Service the heaters or air con units but not the ducting. I would go further to say that duct cleaning actually damages the ducting in my opinion.
When you hire someone to put up wallpaper or build a fence, it’s easy to see whether it’s a good job. But with services like air duct cleaning, there’s much more risk of fraud because the homeowner can’t easily check the work. A disreputable company may not have the proper equipment to do a quality air duct cleaning job, may overcharge you, may leave the ducts dirty or filled with debris and may even do costly damage to your home’s HVAC system. Some companies entice you with very low offers, such as $59 for a whole-house cleaning, then pile on extra charges.
Each day the air in your home is re-circulated through your home’s air duct system. Over time dust, dander, and debris builds up in your HVAC/Air Duct System making your furnace and air conditioner less efficient which can cost you more money to operate.
In 1974 we began our relationship with Honeywell, a major manufacturer, when we agreed to produce commercial electronic air cleaners for them – an agreement that would last 10 years. Shortly thereafter, we also began designing and producing Honeywell’s industrial electrostatic precipitators. This line later grew to include disposable mechanical filter systems.
Our technician was extremely kind and courteous. He explained the procedure very well and cleaned up well after he was done with his work. The furnace and air ducts looked significantly better than before and there was a noticeable difference in the performance of our HVAC system.
I have worked with dozens of HVAC companies over the years as an operations and sales consultant. Duct cleaning is one of the lowest-risk highest-profit services an HVAC company can offer, and it is almost always a completely unnecessary waste of a homeowner’s money. Period, end of story.
Vinick calls air duct cleaning an essential part of home maintenance, akin to mopping and vacuuming. “It’s like changing the oil in your car,” he says. “If you don’t change the oil, you’re going to have a problem. When your components are loaded up with debris, the system has to work harder. When you remove that debris, you get energy consumption savings.”
Deb – I’ve never been asked about tear gassing nor do I have any experience with it. I would think not. I don’t know that a standard professional duct cleaning would do it either. Maybe call a disaster restoration company and see what they recommend. They handle drug lab clean ups and things of that nature so they could probably offer better advice. Thanks for reading.
I have a gravity furnace. My question is, does it make sense to have the ducts cleaned, since the dust (decades worth) isn’t being blown around as the furnace has no blower? I’m thinking it makes more sense to “let sleeping dogs lie.” I don’t notice excessive dust in the house.
The A/C System Cleaning and restoration industry has become a very lucrative bait and switch industry that many Carpet cleaning companies, Maid services, as well as plumbing or handyman service companies are adding on to there services. These add-ons are not fully certified, trained or even have any experience in the HVAC industry. These companies are the reason prices and quality of work are all over the place. If you are looking to make a smart decision for your home a professional Duct Cleaning service will protect you for 5-7 years. This info comes from NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association) which is the closest thing to a license we have for duct cleaning. They have a great site that explains this process and pricing much more in depth and factual than what has been written here. This organization is working very hard to get these bad companies exposed and out of this industry. So in saying that do your research! Green Duct Decontamination is a certified company with certified technicians that take this work very seriously. We can not have these low rated unprofessional companies paste a bad name for an entire industry. Stay away from anything under 250$ for a full duct clean this is not feasible, go look at NADCA.com and you will understand why and what these companies are doing to rob you of your dollar.
I have had the ducts cleaned at my last two homes when I had the furnace and air condtioning systems replaced. I figured the furnace will be new and clean, so have the ducts cleaned too. I do have good filtration systems on the new units as well which I do change filters regularly.
Maintain and protect your beautiful hardwood floors. Sears has hardwood floor cleaning equipment that will extract the dirt left behind or pushed into floor crevices from other do-it-yourself wood floor cleaning methods.

Although there is no standard measurement for the effectiveness of gas-phase air filters, ASHRAE is developing a standard method to be used in choosing gas-phase filters installed in home HVAC systems. Gas-phase filters are much less commonly used in homes than particle air filters. The useful lifetime of gas-phase filters can be short because the filter material can quickly become overloaded and may need to be replaced often. There is also concern that, when full, these filters may release trapped pollutants back into the air. Finally, a properly designed and built gas-phase filtration system would be unlikely to fit in a typical home HVAC system or portable air cleaner.
Inspect the system before cleaning to be sure that there are no asbestos-containing materials (e.g., insulation, register boots, etc.) in the heating and cooling system. Asbestos-containing materials require specialized procedures and should not be disturbed or removed except by specially trained and equipped contractors.
Other organizations have also established guidelines. The EPA’s brochure provides a post-cleaning checklist, and in 2007, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America published criteria for HVAC service providers.
