Contaminants: If noticeable debris, pet hair, odors, or other contaminants are being released into the room through the ducts after the registers have been cleaned and vacuumed; then the ducts may need to be cleaned.
Very useful. You’re right about the cost. we paid close to a thousand for a professional cleaning last time. I forwarded your hub to my husband who is responsible for those type of work. Hopefully, this will save us some money. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
This is very helpful…I appreciate the step by step information as well as the pictures. I will pass this along to my son-in-law as I think this is something he will use soon. As a matter of fact, he will probably use it at my house!!! Great job…congrats on the hub of the day too….
Some research suggests that cleaning heating and cooling system components (e.g., cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers) may improve the efficiency of your system, resulting in a longer operating life, as well as some energy and maintenance cost savings. However, little evidence exists that cleaning only the ducts will improve the efficiency of the system.
Our secret weapon is 35+ years of vast experience in practically every industry and deep product knowledge that provides you with the kind of technically proficient expertise that saves both time and money.
I guess I should present my credentials first, I am a 30 year veteran of the heating and cooling industry. I started at the bottom and have participated in every area of the trade. Installer, service, maint. Ownership, rep, territory manager and so on. A forced air duct system is a large vacume. Like your vacume it has an air intake (return air) and an exhaust (supply registers). A filter just like a vacume (located next to furnace or air handler). Now I want you to visualize something. Put your head inside your vacume cleaner and breath. Get the picture? This is what your duct work looks like. Do you clean your vacume when it’s dirty? If it’s full and the filter is dirty you lose performance and it starts poluting the air you breathe. It’s common sense. I recommend hiring a duct cleaning outfit that you have researched to be honest, background checked, drug tested, insured, and highly recommended by your piers in the area. The is a necessity, but like everything, it should be done by a qualified company.
Vacuum the ducts as much as possible. Consider renting a heavy duty vacuum for this purpose. The standard household vacuum isn’t powerful enough to clean deep into the crevices of the ducts. Make sure that the vacuum you rent has a long hose to reach deep into the ducts. This is important, as there may be mold and mildew growing inside the air ducts [source: Repair Home]. If you want the ducts to be cleaned more thoroughly, consider hiring a professional to do the job.

The air duct cleaning system Sears technicians employ is among the most powerful air duct cleaning systems on the market today. Our cleaning system applies to nearly any air duct system found in homes today. The techniques and methods our staff utilize are the result of careful training to operate their equipment safely and consistently with the guidelines set by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA).
EPA and NADCA agree that if you do hire someone to clean your air ducts, make sure they know what they’re doing — a poor job is worse than no cleaning at all, as it can kick up particles or even break portions of the HVAC system.
Did you know the quality of the air in your home can be much worse than the air outdoors? The list of potential allergens and pathogens in your ductwork is long: bacteria, kitchen grease, pet dander and more. In fact, the EPA lists indoor air quality as one of the top 5 health threats in America.
Certified by NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association) which holds their members to a higher industry standard with stringent requirements to provide quality service to consumers. To learn more about NADCA click here
Venice warns homeowners to beware of air duct cleaning scams, especially the sort where unscrupulous cleaners offer a $49 special deal but start piling on extra fees. “It’s a bait and switch scam where they say they’ll offer unlimited cleaning, but then they throw around terms you might not understand, such as extra fees for a ‘main duct line,’” he says. “And many times, these cleaners end up walking out the door with twice the amount of money a reputable duct cleaner would charge. They’ve gotten very sophisticated at upselling.”
Unless you have mold or some sudden illness you think might be related to the ducts, better leave well enough alone. I regret using a coupon for a $69 heating service “tune up”. The only substantial thing I noticed is them replacing the furnace filter with one of MY filters next to the furnace, and I had replace it less than a month prior.
Excessive Dust: Excess dust and debris built up in the ductwork could cause your home to become dustier. Ask your contractor to use a camera to check inside the ductwork for this problem and show you the evidence before they begin to clean.
Even though there is no evidence to support the claim that duct cleaning benefits your health, there is also no evidence that it harms your health if done properly.  So if you have just had your ducts cleaned, don’t fret about it.  It wasn’t a bad investment in your health and overall it definitely helped more than it hurt.
Once finished with the cleaning, replace the fan cage. Rake back leaves and debris outside the condenser and cut back branches and vegetation at least 2 feet in all directions to ensure proper airflow around the unit. During winter months when the condenser is not in use, it’s good to cover the top of the unit with a piece of plywood or plastic to keep debris from falling in. However, don’t completely cover the unit’s sides, since moisture can build up inside and cause corrosion. Also, a completely covered unit encourages vermin to build nests inside. Remove any cover when the unit is operating.
Our trained Atlanta Air Duct Cleaning professionals can ensure that your air ducts and vents are properly cleaned. We use our HVAC system to individually clean each one of your air ducts from the grill back to the main component.
Don’t Get Fooled: Keep in mind that intake ducts (room ducts that return air to the heating/cooling unit) are likely to be dirtier than supply ducts (which deliver conditioned air from the HVAC unit), since they often don’t have filters. Make sure any “before-and-after” photos are of the supply ducts, where it’s most important that the air is clean.
Jeff and Santiago took extra effort and time to check the duct system in the attic and on the roof to determine how to handle the elbows in the duct system. If needed in the future, I would like these two to provide the service. Very courteous.
Due to the dangers of working around electricity and the air-conditioner’s moving parts, it’s essential to completely turn off power to the unit. On the exterior condenser/compressor, look for an exterior shut-off box near the unit. Indoors, also turn the power off at the breaker box.
Moisture plays an important role in promoting the growth and spread of mold in your air ducts. Spores from mold growth may be released into your home’s living space. Build-up of spores and other air pollutants in the air you’re breathing is enough to make you sick! In addition to our air duct cleaning services, Atlanta Air duct Cleaning offers allergy relief services for you home.
If you answer “No” to any of the questions on the checklist, this may indicate a problem with the job. Ask your service provider to correct any deficiencies until you can answer “yes” to all the questions on the checklist.
lo everyone. I read your Experience. I can say, with good reason since i m an authorized technician of air duck cleaning, that Angie is absolutely right. in order to do a proper cleaning of the ducts serve the means and the proper time. usually for a normal house with a single system the amount payable is between 350 and 550 dollars and the time goes by dirt inside but always not less than 2 hours to clean everything. I regard cupon I can tell you that some are valid and offer the right price for the performance. I also read mold in ducts, before we tell the customer that there is mold perform a test that is analyzed in the laboratory and only after 3 days, with the result of the analysis of paper, inform risk and if the customer is okay proceed with the sanitation of the duct with certified products of the highest quality, just think that the product that we use costs 55 dollars a gallon. but I’m not here to make me adverts, I feel sorry for people who have had bad experiences, I personally love my job and I try to always do it in a proper manner.
Ultimately, the decision to clean air ducts comes down to a homeowner’s own judgment. “Look at your filter and see if it’s dirty,” Vinick says. “Take a look inside the return grills and supply ductwork and you’ll be able to tell if you have debris buildup.”

  1. The Indoor Air Quality market has been in a boom in the last few years, as more people are aware of the germs and allergens that persist in their homes. What most contractors do not know is the massive potential to tap into an open market and opportunity to generate more revenue or start a new division of their existing hvac or carpet cleaning enterprise.
The Kiwi air duct cleaning process is intensive. It includes a complete cleaning, an application of antimicrobial treatment, and filter installation. However, not every home needs a full-system cleaning. Some homes simply need individual ducts vacuumed and cleaned out, an application of antimicrobial treatment and an overall brushing-up. We also offer dryer vent cleaning that can mitigate the risk of fire and help your machine perform more efficiently.
Ask the service provider whether they hold any relevant state licenses. As of 1996, the following states require air duct cleaners to hold special licenses: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Texas. Other states may require them as well.
