“reliable air duct cleaning -how does air duct cleaning work”

While air cleaning devices may help to control the levels of airborne allergens, particles, or, in some cases, gaseous pollutants in a home, they may not decrease adverse health effects from indoor air pollutants.
Air Quality Engineering manufactures a wide variety of air cleaners and air filtration systems for industrial and commercial applications. Our product line includes mist collectors, welding fume extraction systems, soldering fume extraction systems, electronic air cleaners (electrostatic precipitators), HEPA air cleaners, cartridge dust collectors and disposable media filtered air cleaning systems. We also provide portable and overhead systems, as well as ducted (in-duct) systems for a multitude of environments, including oil and mist collection in industrial applications, welding fume, tobacco smoke removal in the hospitality industry, and air purification in healthcare fields. In addition, we produce HEPA and electrostatic home air purifiers that have been repeatedly ranked #1 in consumer magazines.
Your system can be treated with a sealant. These sealants prevent dirt and dust from getting sent back into the air. Sanitizer chemicals can also be added to prevent the growth of mold and other allergens. This is a possible solution for saving on fewer A/C cleanings in the future.
With lots of sunshine and higher-than-average temperatures, Dallas and its residents rely on having efficient air conditioning systems. To keep the air clean and the systems working efficiently, residents should have their systems inspected once a year. Full professional cleaning only needs to be done in certain circumstances, but it’s best to know what to look for and how to budget for the project before the need arises.
With concern growing about molds, allergens and indoor air quality, residential duct cleaning is an emerging industry. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association asserts that removing contaminants from a home’s ventilation system is an important step toward improving indoor air quality. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)[1] says knowledge about air duct cleaning is in the early stages, and there is currently no evidence that a small amount of household dust or other particles in air ducts poses any health risks. The EPA indicates it might be warranted in some cases but not in all situations.
With 2 dogs and lots of dirt outside, you can only imagine the build up in those air ducts over the years. We actually are putting in a new furnace so we are hiring a pro to do it…but now I know what to watch for. Great tutorial and congrats on being Hub of the Day! Wow! Voted very UP and useful.
Thanks bleedercleaners. Yes and the good news is, in a new home, if you clean the ducts really well right after the home is built, you will cut down on much of the dust forever. Unfortunately, in a new home, the drywall and sawdust often gets into and is swept into the heat vents. Get it now and it can help a lot.
When you hire someone to put up wallpaper or build a fence, it’s easy to see whether it’s a good job. But with services like air duct cleaning, there’s much more risk of fraud because the homeowner can’t easily check the work. A disreputable company may not have the proper equipment to do a quality air duct cleaning job, may overcharge you, may leave the ducts dirty or filled with debris and may even do costly damage to your home’s HVAC system. Some companies entice you with very low offers, such as $59 for a whole-house cleaning, then pile on extra charges.

Some research suggests that cleaning heating and cooling system components (e.g., cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers) may improve the efficiency of your system, resulting in a longer operating life, as well as some energy and maintenance cost savings. However, little evidence exists that cleaning only the ducts will improve the efficiency of the system.
You should be aware that although a substance may look like mold, a positive determination of whether it is mold or not can be made only by an expert and may require laboratory analysis for final confirmation. For about $50, some microbiology laboratories can tell you whether a sample sent to them on a clear strip of sticky household tape is mold or simply a substance that resembles it.

As a by-product of the ionization process, these types of units may produce trace amounts of ozone, a lung irritant. (Ion air filters should not be confused with ozone generators, a different type of air filter that relies on ozone to clean the air and is not recommended by the EPA or the American Lung Association.) Ion filters are considered safe if they release less than 50 parts per billion of ozone, the government’s threshold. But even smaller amounts could bother people with asthma or other breathing disorders. If you’re considering a whole-house or portable electronic filter, check the product specifications to make sure it does not exceed safe levels for ozone emission.

The fact is if they are dirty why not clean them. As for the Dr’s comment about if it is not disrupted it is fine. As a pet owner sometimes un disrupted pet hair will sit in the corner of a room or under a counter un disrupted but I still clean it when I notice it. Just because you cant see it doesn’t mean you should leave it there to collect more and more. The people that don’t want there air ducts clean either simply cant afford it but would like it done. OR! the crowd that are to cheap.. You should Clean all portions of your house.

After the air duct cleaning service was complete, one of the men gave me a video inspection through one of the vents, and it was amazingly clean. The duct cleaning service took approximately 2 hours and they left no mess. Since the service, I have noticed very little dust inside my house.
That cold air return you describe is the standard. They have been doing it that way since the 1940’s at least, and they still do. Any reputable air duct cleaning company still gets them nice and clean.
Duct cleaning has become popular in recent years, with commercial cleaning services popping up everywhere. But is the service worth it, or is it a scam? Here’s some information to help you decide whether or not your home might benefit from having the HVAC ducts in your house cleaned.
I agree that good filtration and a sealed system will prevent the need for duct cleaning. However, when we do get called it is because the duct work has reached a noticeable state of restriction or dust or the homeowner is hyper-sensitive to these pollutants in their home. Most of the time we find that no filter or a cheap (99 cent) filter is being used or they have serious duct leaks in the system. If you are hiring a cleaner make sure they are using professional cleaning equipment which will consist of a rotating brush system and a vacuum source. Be highly skeptical of the contractor with no branded system or the guy who shows up with just chimney brushes and a shop vac. He will not be able to reach around all the corners or all the runs in your system and he will be taking your money for a superficial cleaning at best. Only trust a company that offers VIDEO inspection and more importantly…. a contractor who repairs, installs and seals ducts if a problem is discovered or heaven forbid, created. Good luck and get your ducts sealed if you do have a leak! It is one of the greatest energy losses to a home other than being poorly insulated.
I have a white gritty dust throughout my whole house. Dust and it comes right back. We have central air. In 2013 had all the air conditioning tubing in the attic replaced. Old ones were completely clean. Why?? Thought dust would be in there. Put everything in plastic containers. Furniture everything is always covered with this. Problem is always there year round. Furnace people said it is not coming from furnace. We built house in 1971. Only started with this @ 19 years ago. Thinking when air conditioning went in. We cough all the time and sneeze. I do not have friends come here because I hate how dirty my house looks.

Duct cleaning, when done properly, can reduce your family and pet’s exposure to indoor air pollutants, allergens, and airborne illness, as well as lower your energy bill through increased HVAC efficiency.

12.       All access openings created are sealed up with custom sheet metal access panels. An air-tight seal is made with either an acrylic-based metal tape or mastic sealant. If your duct has insulation, this insulation is re-sealed correctly, not with duct tape.  There is no air loss or structural integrity lost in the ducts after this method.
On average, we (Indians in Ontario) receive 3-5 calls per day for duct cleaning services from India. I did get ducts cleaned twice in 25 years. For a newly built house, it should be done as material goes into the ducts. Every year, before turning the heat on, I clean the ducts, using the vacuum pipe or with wet towel. Most of the dust, pet hair, small items get to the ducts from the top floors, not where system is installed. Even in winter months, I open 2-3 windows for air circulation for 15 minutes, specially right after cooking, almost daily. We breath in the same stale air, develop health issues. Also, I have an added air cleaning and fileration system installed. At a low rate, this system constantly cleans the inside air and also that it pulls from the outside. Duct cleaning is a there are other efficient and cost effective methods we can use to purify the inside air.
At Mr. Duct, we understand that the decision to service the HVAC system may be a new and confusing process for many home and business owners. It may even seem that every air duct cleaning company has their own special money-making gimmick, further complicating the research and comparison process for you.
