“why do i need air duct cleaning _what is air duct cleaning video”

Dear D.C.: My advice is simple: avoid those lowball offers. Companies offering a super low price on air duct cleaning might do more harm and no good. The fact of the matter is this: the average air duct cleaning for most homes costs between $300 and $500, with the price affected by factors like the size of the home, the number of ducts and their configuration. The average price for air duct cleaning is $35 per vent. So if your home has a total of 10 vents, the total would be $350.
The blower fan and evaporation coil are cleaned in place. Even a thin layer of dust here can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. Also, the continual presence of moisture during the cooling season can lead to mold growth on the evaporation coils.
Forest Hills- Forest Hills boasts safe streets, large lots, and easy access to nearby amenities such as shops, restaurants, parks, and White Rock Lake. This neighborhood’s location – locals refer to it as being “10 minutes from anywhere” – is another appealing factor, with vibrant areas such as the Arts District just minutes away. This neighborhood is a growing area with lots of different architectural styles and pricier-than-average homes.
The air duct cleaning system Sears technicians employ is among the most powerful air duct cleaning systems on the market today. Our cleaning system applies to nearly any air duct system found in homes today. The techniques and methods our staff utilize are the result of careful training to operate their equipment safely and consistently with the guidelines set by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA).
Once finished with the cleaning, replace the fan cage. Rake back leaves and debris outside the condenser and cut back branches and vegetation at least 2 feet in all directions to ensure proper airflow around the unit. During winter months when the condenser is not in use, it’s good to cover the top of the unit with a piece of plywood or plastic to keep debris from falling in. However, don’t completely cover the unit’s sides, since moisture can build up inside and cause corrosion. Also, a completely covered unit encourages vermin to build nests inside. Remove any cover when the unit is operating.
**Do they clean the Air Handler Unit or Furnace? The most important part of your HVAC system is the Air Handler Unit. Will the company you call clean the air handler unit? (Blower, coils, insulation, drainpan)?
If you price air duct cleaning from several companies, you will notice a big price difference from one company to the next. For a typical 2,000-SF home, the price might range from $60 to $600. After learning more, you will find that PRICE has a direct correlation to the DEGREE of cleaning you get.

And if you have flex duct and/or fiberglass ductboard in your home- the last thing you want is a big brush or anything abrasive running through it. Even high-pressure air can erode ductboard so I wouldn’t clean it with anything. If it becomes contaminated, get rid of it and install real ductwork. If your ductwork is accessible in the basement – the best thing to do is take it down and manually clean it if it’s full of junk. It’s not going to cost a nickel more to do that than to pay $500-1000 for a ‘duct cleaning machine” AKA big blower and vacuum – to do the job.
I am very satisfied with the service I received the other day. Th tech was great, polite and it seems like he knew what he is doing. I came across Dallas Air Duct Cleaning online and I a, glad I did. They cleaned my air ducts and did a very good job. I really recommend them and will use them in the future. Thank you
What if you move into a 20 year old house and find that the people who owned it previously NEVER replaced the filter? It was so dirty that the HVAC system did not work at all. For most people – duct cleaning is NOT a waste of time or money. You must not have allergies. I have very bad ones plus asthma. It makes it very hard for me if I don’t get it done every few years. By the way – the ducts get dusty just sitting there – especially without air going through them. Dust settles on them just like it does the furniture.
Very useful. You’re right about the cost. we paid close to a thousand for a professional cleaning last time. I forwarded your hub to my husband who is responsible for those type of work. Hopefully, this will save us some money. 😉 Thanks for sharing!
The best way to ensure indoor air quality and avoid replacing your A/C system is to clean your ducts. Duct cleaning can be as simple as dusting out the vents or something more in-depth like having a professional look through them. While it sounds daunting, what you gain in keeping them clean is much better than the initial cost. Need help finding a duct cleaning service near you? “The free estimate not only have me an exact price for my service, but also some education on my a/c system. When they did the service they were very friendly and efficient. And along the way, showed me what was being done, and the before-and-after condition of my vents and ducts. Since we just bought our house, I wanted to give the vents and ducts a thorough cleaning and scrubbing. After seeing what came out, I am so glad I did! I will definitely have them back for my yearly servicing.”
A house breathes just like you an I.For example every time your clothes dryer comes on it automatically creates a negative pressure inside the home.So if air goes out of the living area it has to be replaced…..now look above the ceiling fan ….you see the cover…underneath that is a hole straight to your attic….Now the stuff on your ceiling fan you call dust…call it insulation, rat fecies or anything else that is in your attic that could be pulled in your due to a negative pressure.
“Jeff and a partner (forgive me, I forgot his name) were very helpful, friendly, clean, and fast. They explained everything to me, how its done, showed me the equipment they use, used nontoxic chemicals, and gave our AC vents and ducts a thorough cleaning. The air smells great! They also gave me an estimate for tile cleaning service which I really appreciated. ”
Most homeowners don’t know that they need routine air duct cleanings. When was the last time you had maintenance done on the air ducts in your Dallas home? If you can’t remember, chances are good that they’re filled with dust, lint, mildew or even mold. Kiwi has been in business for 30 years, and air ducts are one of our specialties.

Our trained technicians provide speedy, efficient services that go above and beyond what you expect from HVAC cleaning and duct sealing services. Your Mr. Duct Cleaner team will arrive on time, adhere to the estimate we provide, and leave behind a clean work area.
My floor register in my room doesn’t allow much air flow. I’ve tried reaching down as far as I could with my long arms but can only get so much. My understanding is all ducks/floor registers are connected for even air flow in our basement. Everyone else’s gets a lot of cold air blowing in theres. How can I get my registers air flow to work better
I think that the coding and permit industry is a joke!! They will not allow the homeowner to apply for the permit it has to be the licenced contractor. It would make since to allow the homeowner to apply for this. But it is all about money!! They really don’t care if its up to code because if they did then they wouldnt care who applied and payeed for it, but they want the contractor to do it so if they do something wrong they can fine them instead of just pointing it out and allowing them to do it right.

John – a properly maintained negative air machine has 3 stages of filters, ending in a 99.998% Hepa filter. The loose dust gets sucked into the duct cleaning machine & through the filters. If any dust is entering the home, the machine is not well-maintained.

The amount of time it takes to clean a residential HVAC system depends on many variables such as the size of the home, the number of systems, the extent of the contamination and the number of HVAC cleaners performing the job. Ask at least two contractors to inspect your system and give you a time estimate for your particular system. This will give you a general idea of how long the job should take as well as an idea of how thoroughly the contractor plans to do the job.
Christine – I think you’re misunderstanding. I’m recommending you cover the supply registers, not the return and only temporarily, not forever. It would take a lot more than a paper towel over the supply registers for a few minutes to burn up a motor. Especially on the supply side. If it were return air, I’d say you’re right but even then, it would take a lot more than a paper towel and few minutes to cause any sort of damage to the motor.
Such signs indicate the need for an expert air duct cleaning, which Mr. Duct can provide. We thoroughly clean heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to eliminate dust, pet dander, and other allergens from both residential and commercial heating and cooling systems. Did you know the quality of the air in your home can be much worse than the air outdoors? The list of potential allergens and pathogens in your ductwork is long: bacteria, kitchen grease, pet dander and more. In fact, the EPA lists indoor air quality as one of the top 5 health threats in America.
The EPA is so far behind on useful knowledge because of the lack of funding so don’t be mislead. The Hvac old timers were left at the dock so to speak and missed out on the IAQ movement. The ones that are savvy and up to date on the information do Air Duct Cleaning, even tho that will lead to a few less service calls its the right thing to do for their customer. Please take a look into a return duct that has never been cleaned, I dare anyone to say it does not need to be cleaned.
Vacuum frequently (weekly).  A lot of people think that their HVAC system is the only key to indoor air quality, but your air conditioner is just a part of an overall lifestyle that is required to be healthy.  Take a look at: How to Use a Vacuum Cleaner and Why.
Duct cleaning, when done properly, can reduce your family and pet’s exposure to indoor air pollutants, allergens, and airborne illness, as well as lower your energy bill through increased HVAC efficiency.
The vertical piece of metal on the right is called a drive. It is folded over on the top and bottom of the duct to hold it in place. With a pair of pliers, you can unfold it and pull the drive down off the duct on both sides to detach the two pieces.
The air conditioning unit sits right in front of this house. Shrubs will help soften it, but our plan also calls for a two-sided screen to help hide it even more. The benefit of a two-sided screen: It won’t trap heat.
Remove dust and vacuum your home regularly. (Use a high efficiency vacuum (HEPA) cleaner or the highest efficiency filter bags your vacuum cleaner can take. Vacuuming can increase the amount of dust in the air during and after vacuuming as well as in your ducts).

And its better to replace than to do “abrasive” duct cleaning. If the duct cleaning has a rotating brush it will remove part of the glue that is holding the Fiberglass in the ducts together, PERIOD no matter how much the say it don’t because the brush is your outdoor unit in winter with plywood (Photo 1) to prevent damage from falling ice. Don’t wrap it with plastic or any other material that completely blocks airflow. Moisture that’s trapped inside will promote corrosion.
i got angies list deal for 109 air duct clenaing, dryer vent cleaning, and furnace inspection, {healthy duct cleaning} i call the company, they arrive on time. did excellent service what ever i purches i got. they give me furnace inspection and the told me that my furnace is very dirty and they offer me to clean that for 250 extra. i paid and i am very happy from this service. i try before 2 diffrent company that i got deal from them as well the just give me estimate and don’t even do the job. so guys don’t spend time if you need deep cleaning just cal this guy the offer free estimate as well.
I strongly agree with the above warning. Duct work that has been fogged with disinfectant can actually cause people to develop asthma or other breathing problems. My house has been contaminated by the use of one of the products commonly used to fog. It now needs to be torn down to the studs.
After months of respiratory infections and then having my lung partially collapse my landlord finally agreed to clean my air ducts but had the apartment complex carpet cleaning guy come do it. He was shocked and horrified. I was breathing in squirrel feces and tons of it for months alongside a ton of mold and meldew. The air intake is located in a closet outside my apartment on the balcony and the door to the closet had a big enough space underneath for squirrels to crawl in. He had to sweep all the poop and straw nest they made in there. It filled a quarter of a garbage bag. I have Lupus and it was not until I threatened to sue after getting out of the hospital my landlord finally did something. The amount of stuff that was coming out of my vents was crazy. For months, everything I cooked kept getting gritty stuff in it and I finally put two and two together and figured out it was the the ducts. Wish I would have found this info sooner. Thank you for taking the time to write this and share.

Unscrew the top grille and hold it open. The fan will usually come with it, so support it carefully to avoid stretching the electrical wires and stressing the connections. If the fan doesn’t lift out, avoid hitting it with a direct spray of water when you clean the fins.

It’s 11 years plus in the industry I have only had to sanitize two systems both were slab systems that were in concrete and could be cleaned with a different method than normal duct cleaning. We were able to use water to rinse out the disinfectant. Would you use a chemical on anything else you use to eat or drink with and not rinse it off? The ducts in your home should be thought of as your homes heart and lungs and breathe the same air that you do. And just like us we wouldn’t use bad chemicals in our lungs and heart.

“should i have air duct cleaning why do air duct cleaning”

This dust problem is not addressed in simply cleaning a duct system. You are treating a symptom and not solving anything in most cases. Duct sealing doesn’t always correct issues to a worn out duct system. Nothing is cleaner, better sealed, properly insulated than a new duct system.
Once cleaning is complete and all components have been replaced, Cyclone Air Systems will not leave your home or office until it is absolutely certain that both the cooling and heating processes are operating properly.
Kristal – I’m sorry but there are so many duct systems it would be hard for me to help without more info. If your ducts are cased in drywall it would be very difficult to access without special equipment.

When we think of pollution, we often think of smoking factories and hazy outdoor air. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that levels of some hazardous pollutants in indoor air are as high as 70 times greater than in outdoor air. We are discovering that indoor air pollution causes allergies, asthma and even more serious illnesses.
2. Dirt and dust restrict air flow. Let’s say your system is doing a fine job of heating and cooling the air. But if the blower fan or motor can’t turn because of dirt or the air filter is clogged with dust, then the system can’t effectively circulate that properly warmed or cooled air through out your home. It’s still going to run longer and use more energy.
Do not allow them to use steam because this introduces unneeded moisture into your air conditioning system, and although the moisture on the airflow side of your ducts will soon evaporate, steamers will also blow moisture into areas that do not receive air circulation (joints, etc.) which is a recipe for mold growth.  Don’t allow unnatural moisture into your HVAC system.  Take a look at: How Do You Prevent Mold?
As a by-product of the ionization process, these types of units may produce trace amounts of ozone, a lung irritant. (Ion air filters should not be confused with ozone generators, a different type of air filter that relies on ozone to clean the air and is not recommended by the EPA or the American Lung Association.) Ion filters are considered safe if they release less than 50 parts per billion of ozone, the government’s threshold. But even smaller amounts could bother people with asthma or other breathing disorders. If you’re considering a whole-house or portable electronic filter, check the product specifications to make sure it does not exceed safe levels for ozone emission.
I’m new to this taking care of my sister home until she get better,So I want to do good job and take of her home.My is helping out and the room she’s in is very hot while the rest of the house cool it’s not fair to her.
I’m really not convinced that duct cleaning is of any value. My roommate wanted the ducts cleaned so he called some company. My scam senses is already tingling. They came in with a big negative pressure fan. Did some blowing and sucking in different vents. Then they tried to upsell a full system cleaning. They wanted to pull the blower and clean the heat transfer box at $700 per heater unit. I have a big house so we have two units. They also tried to sell us some “custom” $250.00 Air Lifetime air filters. At that point I pulled the BS get the hell out bell. After paying $520.00 for just the cleaning, I paid the bill and sent them on their way. I replaced the existing filter with the good old and cheap paper filters at $10.00 each. Duct cleaning… I’m not Impressed.
We access the inside of the trunk lines (supply) and plenums (return air) and clean each one with specialized scrubbing air tools. Small 1″ holes allow access to every area as the dirt is pulled toward the attached vacuum hose. (all if reachable)
Having your air ducts cleaned by a professional does many more things than save you money by having your HVAC system run efficiently and cleaning up the dust bunnies…Read on about Improving Air Quality.
Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. The best way to address this risk is to control or eliminate the sources of pollutants, and to ventilate a home with clean outdoor air. The ventilation method may, however, be limited by weather conditions or undesirable levels of contaminants in outdoor air. If these measures are insufficient, an air cleaning device may be useful.
Cleaning your ductwork can damage it.  Secondly, the air duct cleaning procedure consists of sticking vacuum tubes down your ductwork, which can damage and crack the sensitive plastic interior of your ductwork.  It is also important to know that, despite what they might say, most duct cleaning companies are not HVAC contractors!  They actually know very little about the proper operation of your system.
Once located, use a wet/dry vacuum to clear the drain. It’s best to remove the paper filter from the wet/dry vacuum so as not to ruin the filter. Hold the hose of the wet/dry vacuum to the end of the drain line. You can use duct tape or simply hold a rag around the gap. Turn on the vacuum for 2-3 minutes then turn off. This will clear the drain of any growing biological matter.
I own and live in a mobile home and was told to install a mobile home air condition well I did not want one because the ones for moblie homes are to small,so I install a home air-condidtion and its good for heating and cooling the only thing I do is change is the filter every month or two,What I want to know is how does dirt and dust comes from????

Homeowners should be sure to choose a fully insured duct and vent cleaning service. Choosing an uninsured cleaning service leaves homeowners on the hook for the costs associated with any employee injuries or accidental damage that occurs during the cleaning process.
Ductworks cleaned my ducts, tech had to borrow a screwdriver to remove registers, they used a shop vacuum in the house that we had to listen to for 4+ hours. While brushing with the electric brush an vacuum running blew the breaker at least 6 times. He did not adequately vacuum ducts after brushing, house smelled like dust and mold every time the furnace came on for over a month. I would never use this company again!
If you follow the above four steps, then you will never need to clean your AC ducting.  But what about the conditions recommended by the NADCA for the use of a duct cleaning company?  I’ll spare you my typical, cynical rant about the role that lobbyists play in swaying such organizations, and get to the list.  Let’s take a look at each:

I am a service technician [since ’92]…..and as to double filtering…..I have never recommended it. Granted…..it would be noticeably helpful if the fiberglass filters are the main ones used [which I also never recommend…..as long as system can deliver appropriate air flow with a pleated cotton filter…and any decent service tech can check the air flow for proper cfm]. Any particles small enough to pass through a pleated cotton filter are going to pass through a second filter as well….unless the second filters are so tight that the system is starving for air flow. Has anybody ever accidentally put two filters in their automatic drip coffee maker? What if cars used two fuel filters or air filters? I have told some homeowners to try using second filters at each register [the black thin filter material cut-to-fit….same type used in many window air conditioners]…..but I only suggest this when I know they will still get at least 400 cfm per ton of air flow [350 absolute minimum]……as some homeowners know others who say it has helped and it gives them a peace of mind knowing they are doing something to help contribute to a solution, so it HAS to help [even though I think it falls in the “one-born-every-minute” category…..similar to duct cleaning].

1. Remove end caps from rectangular duct work. If you have rectangular duct work, like in the picture below, you can remove the end caps to access the inside of the ducts. You can slide the “drives” down off the duct and pull the cap out of the “slips.” So long as the duct is not butting up against the wall, you should be able to reach your vacuum hose in through the space uncovered by removing the cap, and sweep out any dust you find. You could even use a flashlight to look inside the duct for dirty areas.

A $99 special turned up hidden costs . $25 for service call, every duct after 10 was $20 per duct. Told them to get out of my house. The man became very vocal and yelled at me all the way back to his truck. I said “don’t you shout at me”. Called Sears and got nowhere not even an apology for the conduct of its technician. After reading all of these articles I’ll stick my vacuum hose as a DIY project.
With 2 dogs and lots of dirt outside, you can only imagine the build up in those air ducts over the years. We actually are putting in a new furnace so we are hiring a pro to do it…but now I know what to watch for. Great tutorial and congrats on being Hub of the Day! Wow! Voted very UP and useful.
We are all getting migraines several times a month. I have asthma but not ever as bad as it has been and my 2 year olds dr just informed me she potentially has asthma too. We all get sinus infections regularly and eczema and contact dermatitis. None of us have been this way until recently in our apartment. A roof leak with mold was repaired recently mold was sealed off not removed. We also had lead paint removed from a few window trims this year. I wasn’t here to see if they covered the vents. We had mice too. I vacuum everyday we have hardwood floors no one wears shoes past the font door and I’m getting over a cup full of dirt every time I vacuum. Dust on everything daily. White dust. It’s a 4 room apartment with 1 intake. They are filthy from what I can see when I change the filters. The filters are black after a few months. I feel bad to ask the homeowner to get the system cleaned, can’t afford to move (we live in the city & it’s expensive). I am going to try the shop vac to remove what I can. Any experienced hvac people please give your opinion. Should I just get it done and pay for it myself? We have lived here for 13 years. It’s never been cleaned since ive been here. Is it something I can do with a shop vac? Can i use a wet rag to get the powder dust on the inside of the vents off. One vent has what looks like chunks of dry wall or thick paint sitting in the vent and none of the vents screw into the wall, the screws just fall out. No one ever reinforced the area so the wall just basically crumbles. Kind of useless to spend the money on filters since the air and dust just blows out around the sides the vents and one of the vents just falls right out of the wall when the heat is turned on. I don’t know why the owner doesn’t fix it. He’s been here to replace filters and saw the condition.
My intention was to use the $59.99 coupon for unlimited vents and 1 return. I have allergies so I wanted to make sure I cleaned out everything that is needed. The technician say that the coupon doesn’t include the furnace and the main trunks which turned out to be an extra $270 (and that I needed to have this done). On top of that I was charged $130 for a blower housing cleaning in that they used the shopvac to blow air in the ducts push debris and dust. On top of that i was charged $200 for Sanitizer and Mildicide, of which I saw the technician use a white spray bottle to spray the vents and return. He also used a drill attached with a cord. At the end of the cord it was a brush to I guess loosen the dirt in the ducts. After a vac was used to suck the dirt. He asked for my phone so he can take before and after pictures of only the return vent. His partner cleaned the furnace of which didn’t let me see how it looked after. I was charged an additional $40 for the Lifetime Electrostatic Filter (he said it was originally $120, whatever). Lastly he wanted to install a UV light to take out the mold for $600, but I declined. When they left there was dust on my TV stand the upstairs hallway (under the return vent), and mostly in the furnace. I had to replace my filter immediately since they use the shop vac to blow in the air duct technique. I plan on requesting a refund.

If your duct has insulation, this insulation is re-sealed correctly, not with duct tape.  There is no air loss or structural integrity lost in the ducts after this method.

I’ve talked to many homeowners who have been victimized by these scams. Even the ones who don’t succumb to the high-pressure techniques are still frequently wronged, as these lowball companies often use inadequate tools and equipment — such as handheld vacuums and drills — to do the work. They quickly go through the house, vacuuming out a few vents, and are gone in less than 30 minutes. A legitimate air duct cleaning should take three to four hours to complete, according to reputable duct cleaning companies that I’ve spoken to.
Check Standards: The NADCA provides guidelines for professionals and customers on safe duct cleaning. If your ducts are insulated, the professional should also follow the guidelines of the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA).
It doesn’t clean all of your ductwork.  It isn’t rocket science – they are literally vacuuming the inside of your accessible ductwork.  Would you pay your neighbor $1,000 to come over with his vacuum cleaner and stick it into your AC vents?

Over time, algae and mold can build up and potentially plug the drain, so if the drain is either not flowing or flowing very slowly, it will need to be unplugged. A plugged drain can either cause damage by flooding onto the floor or, if the system is equipped with a drain float, cause the system to stop cooling in order to avoid flooding.

Had my air ducts cleaned with company named WellDuct in Edison New Jersey, total cost was $450. Have a two floor condo, technicians said the system was never cleaned, it took them about three hours. Since I am just moving in, I can not tell the difference. They collected about 3-4 pounds of dust, is that normal amount or should be more?

I guess I should present my credentials first, I am a 30 year veteran of the heating and cooling industry. I started at the bottom and have participated in every area of the trade. Installer, service, maint. Ownership, rep, territory manager and so on. A forced air duct system is a large vacume. Like your vacume it has an air intake (return air) and an exhaust (supply registers). A filter just like a vacume (located next to furnace or air handler). Now I want you to visualize something. Put your head inside your vacume cleaner and breath. Get the picture? This is what your duct work looks like. Do you clean your vacume when it’s dirty? If it’s full and the filter is dirty you lose performance and it starts poluting the air you breathe. It’s common sense. I recommend hiring a duct cleaning outfit that you have researched to be honest, background checked, drug tested, insured, and highly recommended by your piers in the area. The service is a necessity, but like everything, it should be done by a qualified company.
Bill – The metal shouldn’t hold the smell and you probably won’t be able to clean it all unless you disconnect it so for the time and effort, I’d replace the damaged duct and registers rather than try and clean them.
There are many different designs of duct systems, such as attic systems and underground systems, but the theory of cleaning these systems is the same. You may not be able to access all parts of these systems (for example, underground ducts), but you can make a difference in your air quality by cleaning the parts of the system that you can reach.

“what does air duct cleaning do +what is air duct cleaning services”

I just lost a big job to a company that convinced the homeowner they could clean 3 Air Handler Units, 30 Supply Vents, 6 Return Lines and “Sanitize” the system for a total of $350.00. Not per unit – total cost!
I have been disapointed that Angies List magazine, in a previous article, didn’t mention the EPA recommendations. The same magazine issue had discount coupons from duct cleaners. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
Furnace, Duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning. The crew was excellent, arrived on time, took their time. Explained everything they were doing. I will definitely use them again. And Recommend them to Friends.
No products are currently registered by EPA as biocides for use on fiberglass duct board or fiberglass lined ducts so it is important to determine if sections of your system contain these materials before permitting the application of any biocide.
An entire industry has developed to address these issues. It’s called the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) industry, and the backbone of the industry is air duct cleaning. The best companies also provide dryer vent cleaning as an added service that keeps homes safe from fire and fumes.
Pay particular attention to cooling coils, which are designed to remove water from the air and can be a major source of moisture contamination of the system that can lead to mold growth. Make sure the condensate pan drains properly. The presence of substantial standing water and/or debris indicates a problem requiring immediate attention. Check any insulation near cooling coils for wet spots.

This step is completed with the removal of the furnace panels and cleaning of the blower fan, combustion chamber, electric motor and cabinet. We use vacuum and compressed air. The furnace is inspected to make sure everything is running efficient and safely.
One of the best ways to ensure that the air in your home is clean is to clean your air vents. The air ducts in your house contain millions of particles of dust, hair, dirt, pollen, spider webs and other allergens [source: Alpine Air Duct]. Cleaning your air vents will also save you money on heating and air conditioning. So read the tips listed below and learn about how you can clean the air vents in your house.
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years. Ed Mack, owner of Air Duct Professionals in Lake Elsinore, says homeowners should consider doing it every two to five years, depending on their circumstances.
Air duct cleaning services have sparked a bit of controversy in the world of heating, cooling, and ventilation. Thanks to some illegitimate duct cleaners, this industry has been given a bad reputation for dishonesty and deception. Four Seasons has sought to change all that by offering air duct cleaning services that are not only honest and up-front in every respect but that are also helpful in improving the home’s indoor air quality. EPA does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned except on an as-needed basis because of the continuing uncertainty about the benefits of duct cleaning under most circumstances. EPA does, however, recommend that if you have a fuel burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, they be inspected for proper functioning and serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning. Some research also suggests that cleaning dirty cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers can improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems. However, little evidence exists to indicate that simply cleaning the duct system will increase your system’s efficiency.
If there is stuff in the ducts, the fact that it’s laying there and not being blown into the rooms is proof positive that it is hurting no-one. The 5-6 exceptions you cite in this article I’ll buy, but only with the caveat that at least some of those could have been avoided by proper protection (during remodeling for example) – and if asbestos/lead/whatever winds up in your ducts- the remodeling contractor should be the one paying to remove it.
Certifications: The cleaning company should be certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), which sets standards for HVAC system cleaning. The EPA does not certify duct cleaners, so avoid anyone making that claim. Check for relevant licenses and insurance – some states require a license for duct cleaning while others don’t.

There is a lot of good, general information in the article. As with anything, the homeowner should do their due diligence in getting enough information to make an educated decision. Should duct-work be cleaned? YES! Does it need to be cleaned annually or even every second or third year? Not necessarily. It all depends on a bunch of variables. You’re right that a well designed and balanced system will deliver the right amount of air flow, but sometimes conditions outside the home/business, make it a necessity to get the ducts cleaned. As for mold? NO filter is going to address a mold If you have mold, you have a moisture issue that needs to be addressed. Also, in my 38 years of experience in the HVAC and sheet metal industries, washable filters are one of the reasons ducts need to be cleaned. They are no where near efficient in cleaning/filtering the air to the level that they should.
Development of mold and mildew. Air ducts that are exposed to moisture, such as most in the Dallas area, can grow dangerous mold and mildew; that build-up can subject you and your family to airborne toxins if it’s not treated properly.

Get several estimates, and be sure you understand the specific work covered by each company’s quote. Ask about the service providers’ training and experience. “why is air duct cleaning important _air duct cleaning methods”

I am reading theses emails from home owners and HVAC Duct Cleaning Companies. My Advice is Simple. In NC where I live and work, the air duct cleaning Industry is unregulated. There are less then honest companies selling their services every day – even on Angie’s List! I know – I own and operate a HVAC restoration company and see the scams every day!

I know it has to have a new concentric venting system installed, I believe it needs new plenums ( mine are rusty but both of these require extra work , so someHVAC persons are saying I do not need either!! RED FLAG THERE. Also, it will need a new drain using PVCP ?? Piping run maybe two, depending on where my evep coil drain is conected (here in TN they use to run them in with the septic lines, now they cannot be run through that way), Lastly I am not where or what these things do beides hold water but I was told It needs a filter rack and new filter base safety pan. THATSSS it that is all I know about this stuff aside from the fact that nothing up there is to code thus far LOL. !!

The average cost of keeping your residential ductwork orderly is going to vary greatly from that of a commercial building. This is because commercial air ducts are often larger and more extensive. Residential cleanings can cost an average of about $20-$30 per vent. For commercial buildings, service providers must do an estimate of your space before they can provide an accurate quote. Before factoring in the materials and the number A/C and furnace units, you can expect a commercial project to cost at least $35-$50 per hour.
I believe a $3 [sic] pleated cotton filter is all that is ever needed to keep a system running top notch. A cleaning of the blower squirrel cage and of the evaporator [indoor] coil may be needed one time if fiberglass or no filters have been previously used. The return air grille [or grilles] need vacuumed off occasionally, as they are upstream from the filter. The $3 filter should be changed every 3 months [rule of thumb]….and most of them have a little white square on the cardboard frame to write install date…..and the should point into the duct [if at filter grille]….or towards the furnace [if in ductwork slot]…or towards the blower [if in blower compartment]. My two cents…..
Like I’d mentioned in the hub, this isn’t a professional duct cleaning. One might pay $300 – $700 for a professional cleaning. For someone who doesn’t have that kind of money for this type of service, they can do it themselves and achieve nearly 85% of the success. Knowing that people don’t have the equipment or ability to disconnect the entire duct system as a service might do, this is a great alternative. As for the fan, since we don’t have a truck mount unit that pulls the CFM as they clean, you need something to move the loose dust down to the filter. Since you banged on the duct, the dust would just sit there and you wouldn’t be able to get to it. This is why you wrap the registers with the paper towel though most of the dust is being pulled back to the blower as opposed to push out of the vent.
My first thought is that you have underground duct work. If so, there are various ways to address that but I’m not real familiar with them. If you don’t then I’m still not sure what that could be. If you’re in heating season, some furnaces will smell bad because the heat exchanger is bad and if so, you need to consider a new system if you’re not under warranty. Note: Many heat exchangers have rather long warranties. 20 years…maybe lifetime.
We clean THE ENTIRE AIR DUCT SYSTEM the RIGHT way. We only use the BEST and latest in technology truck mounted equipment with NADCA trained technicians and adhere to NADCA’s strict guidelines for duct cleaning. Demonstrate visible evidence of microbial growth in your duct work. Some service providers may attempt to convince you that your air ducts are contaminated by demonstrating that the microorganisms found in your home grow on a settling plate (i.e., petri dish). This is inappropriate. Some microorganisms are always present in the air, and some growth on a settling plate is normal. As noted earlier, only an expert can positively identify a substance as biological growth and lab analysis may be required for final confirmation. Other testing methods are not reliable.
Your cleaning service should involve all aspects of your duct work to maximize energy efficiency and air quality. This includes attending to the heat exchanger, blower, drain pan, plenum and coils as well. In the process, your service provider may find that you’re facing larger issues than debris and build-up. The professional may recommend having your furnace repaired if they notice, for example, damage to your heat exchanger or blower motor. Generally, a furnace repair costs between $130 and $500. They may also find that an A/C coil needs to be replaced rather than cleaned and would then recommend A/C repair.

Here in Atlanta we get 6 to 10 $49 coupons in the mail weekly…I have always consider them a complete scam….just had my master bathroom& bedroom and guest bath completely remodeled down to the studs…Had my 3 returns nearest the area sealed to prevent sheet rock dust to spread…it worked and I personally cleaned all 7 returns when a 5 HP , new Rigid shop Vac($99 from HD)…took one hour and I found little evidence that “I need my ducts cleaned” Had quotes from $400 to $600…I use the best air filters for my air handler and change it every 2 to 3 months…..any dust is trapped in it and I believe the Air Duct folks are all cons….
We were surprised that our $99.00 air duct cleaning turned into a $350 ADDITIONAL cleaning of our system. While we understood the reasoning behind the cleaning, we do not understand why it cost so much since we watched them spray an aerosol chemical that was supposed to “melt” the dirt. We would likely look for a cheaper alternative next time, however the guys that came seemed to have done a good job.
Studies by the EPA have shown that indoor air pollutants can be up to 10 times higher than outdoor levels. Homes and offices have proven home to more than 105 known carcinogens, increasing the risk to occupants.

Soiling of Walls and Other Surfaces: Ion generators generally are not designed to remove the charged particles that they generate from the air. These charged particles may deposit on room surfaces, soiling walls and other surfaces.
You may be familiar with air ducts that are constructed of sheet metal. However, many modern residential air duct systems are constructed of fiber glass duct board or sheet metal ducts that are lined on the inside with fiber glass duct liner. Since the early 1970’s, a significant increase in the use of flexible duct, which generally is internally lined with plastic or some other type of material, has occurred.
The fogger is placed in the air conditioner’s intake with the system’s fan running to sanitize the entire system and to inhibit the future microbiological growth by utilizing a natural disinfectant that is harmless to occupants.

A complete and in-depth cleaning requires us to go into every room that contains an air duct or cold-air return. At Alpine, the work will not begin until the floors, doorways and outside wall corners are protected. Slip-on shoe covers, floor tarps and plastic corner guards create a barrier between our equipment and your home.
Other organizations have also established guidelines. The EPA’s brochure provides a post-cleaning checklist, and in 2007, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America published criteria for HVAC service providers.
I always recommend Matt at Rainbow. I’ve received multiple compliments from my insured’s letting me know what a great job they have done, and how quickly they were able to get the job done. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a fast, honest, & reliable restoration contractor.
All these pro duct cleaners answer with “it’s common sense, everything operates better when cleaner” etc. But your explanation is correct. Especially so with flex tube ducting where dust gets “stuck” between the lowest valleys (between wire coil supports) where air flow is drastically reduced — which is more than 50 pct of the entire interior surface area of the flex ducting. That sounds like a bad thing but also has a good effect of trapping dust from escaping.
Great service they use truck mount take them 3 hours. Found them after they clean my friend house she was very happy so called them. They explain what will be done and did a walk throw. Highly recommended

“what is air duct cleaning reliable air duct cleaning”

Ask the service provider whether he/she holds any relevant state licenses. As of 1996, the following states require air duct cleaners to hold special licenses: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Texas. Other states may also require licenses.
There are a few different methods to cleaning air ducts. The main reason for a good or not good experience with a duct cleaning company is the individual that is performing the task. I have seen a couple ways of doing it and both work if the person at the other knows what to do. You can also ask them if they have a scope so you can see in the ducts and verify a good job.
Moisture plays an important role in promoting the growth and spread of mold in your air ducts. Spores from mold growth may be released into your home’s living space. Build-up of spores and other air pollutants in the air you’re breathing is enough to make you sick! In addition to our air duct cleaning services, Atlanta Air duct Cleaning offers allergy relief services for you home.
The comment that the EPA say’s there is no scientific evidence that regular air duct cleaning does not improve air quality is totally absurd. The EPA is WRONG and whoever wrote that article should be FIRED!
John – a properly maintained negative air machine has 3 stages of filters, ending in a 99.998% Hepa filter. The loose dust gets sucked into the duct cleaning machine & through the filters. If any dust is entering the home, the machine is not well-maintained.
Ok what you said is true but in most cases ducts are in a duct flex format, and knowing that the dust in people’s flex duct is just surface dust, any real debris that are in the duct itself will result in very little to no air flow which will keep your unit from performing properly, but if it is true allergy reasons then replacing your duct system is better for overall better air quality, plus if you do pay attention to the warranty on flexible duct is that it only has a 10 year warranty and typically only lasts for 20 years so do your research before having a duct cleaning, and to add one more thing if your duct work is completely metal and you can’t see visible insulation then your duct on the inside has insulation inside of it, if you replace that with duct work that is clean metal on the inside and wrapped with insulation on the outside then it will further reduce the air bourne fiberglass and dust.
Unfortunately, I’m in the same boat and all you can really do is keep cleaning. A duct cleaning can’t hurt and I also run the fan on my furnace around 340 days a year which keeps air moving through my filter thus catching more of the dust and hair (and of course meaning I change my filter a bit more often than most) but that is about all you can do. A duct cleaning won’t really do much for the ongoing shedding and dust our kids create.
Some portable air cleaners sold in the consumer market are ENERGY STAR® qualified. Please note the following disclaimer on their packaging: “This product earned the ENERGY STAR® by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by EPA. EPA does not endorse any manufacturer claims of healthier indoor air from the use of this product.”
The dust, pollen, dander, sawdust, mold spores and other lightweight particles that float in your home’s air eventually circulate through your heating and cooling system. Your furnace filter traps some of this airborne debris—if you replace your filter when it’s dirty—but some settles in the ductwork. That accumulated dirt is available to move back into the airflow and blow into your rooms. Your furniture and floors get dusty sooner, but worse, your home’s air quality can deteriorate. If you have respiratory problems, you might find it more difficult to breath. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you can be exposed to pollen all year long. Dirty ducts also make your heating and cooling system less efficient. The filter clogs faster, so the system has to work harder to move air—and you can end up with a higher energy bills. Also, particles of dirt wear on the components in your HVAC system, which can shorten its life.
I have had the ducts cleaned at my last two homes when I had the furnace and air condtioning systems replaced. I figured the furnace will be new and clean, so have the ducts cleaned too. I do have good filtration systems on the new units as well which I do change filters regularly.
I agree about the coupons. While they are often useful, in our case, we (who usually are more intelligent than this) were talked into a more expensive cleaning that ultimately added up to about 900.00. After reading Angie’s articles, we realized what a silly mistake we made. Next time, we will do our research.
I bought a Supply Vent Cleaning + Furnace Inspection service with GreenHeat service back through Amazon deal in Nov and used it before it expires. Cost 50$ for that deal. 2 guys came did the vent cleaning very quick and after inspecting the furnace, talked me into doing a deep cleaning for the blower. After 20% discount, price was 375, so I bargained down to 320$. They took the blower out, cleaned throughly (it was very dirty). Also sanitized and vacuum the rest of the furnace. I am satisfied with their service.
WELL, this summer when I opened them up we had black dust spewing from one of the upstairs vents. It resembled the fuzz that comes off new towels. This prompted us to look into duct cleaning. We heard from someone who had it done several times, said it was worthwhile, and knew of a firm that did a good job. Clean Air America sent a single technician for the appointment and after counting registers and ducts gave me a price of $360.00 which included “sanitizing” the system (a $99 additional fee per can used). The small size of the plenum forced him to connect the 8” round vacuum hose from the truck to the 10” square opening from our humidifier unit. In hindsight, a mistake since it reduced the “negative” pressure in the system.
Our house had an electrical fire. The room that it happened in had no air ducts in it. Landlord already tore down the room that it in. Smoke did get into my daughters room which has air ducts. Does a whole house need to have all the air ducts cleaned. My Landlord is saying it doesn’t

These guys know what they are doing and do it right. The team Kent sent out did a very thorough job and were very polite and professional. We can already tell the difference. Kent came by to inspect the work and even threw in cleaning our short dryer vent. Let me say that the guys took down and scrubbed every vent, some with mold (not black mold). Kent gave us some great tips to extend the time between cleanings and was not pushing for unnecessary services or too frequent follow on cleaning. I will gladly call them in 5 years to re-clean our ducting, vents, fan, motor, and coil.
Vacuum frequently (weekly).  A lot of people think that their HVAC system is the only key to indoor air quality, but your air conditioner is just a part of an overall lifestyle that is required to be healthy.  Take a look at: How to Use a Vacuum Cleaner and Why.
Air Duct Cleaning—also known variously as vent cleaning, furnace duct cleaning, HVAC system cleaning, ductwork cleaning, and heating duct or heating vent cleaning—is the process by which contaminants and debris that build up over time are removed from the inside of your home’s ventilation system.
I had my ducts cleaned by Pure Air. They came out and gave me a free camera inspection, showed me all the debris in my ducts then showed me the equipment they used. They also did a free crawlspace inspection for mold and cleaned my dryer vent. I shopped around and they were by far the least expensive in our area. Afterwards they put the camera back in my ducts and showed me how clean they were. Took about 2 hours, they were very professional and friendly. My house smells great and I feel that I’m breathing much easier now. I recommend them highly!
Good article, but it fails to point out that leaky return-side ducts could be drawing dust and allergens into the duct system from the enclosed spaces in which they run, e.g. between walls, below floors, attic. So duct cleaning may only be a temporary solution. The homeowner can get a home energy audit — free in many states — to determine if they have significant duct leakage. An Aeroseal dealer may be able to effectively seal up the duct system without needing to tear into walls etc to get to the ducts.
Some air cleaning devices are designed to be installed in the ductwork of a home’s central heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system to clean the air in the whole house. Portable room air cleaners can be used to clean the air in a single room or specific areas, but they are not intended for whole-house filtration. The following pages will provide information on different types of air cleaning devices and how they work.
At Mr. Duct, we understand that the decision to service the HVAC system may be a new and confusing process for many home and business owners. It may even seem that every air duct cleaning company has their own special money-making gimmick, further complicating the research and comparison process for you.
Two types of air cleaning devices can remove particles from the air — mechanical air filters and electronic air cleaners. Mechanical air filters remove particles by capturing them on filter materials.
Accumulation of animal matter and debris caused by animal destruction. When animals get into your air ducts, they can store food, defecate and even die inside. Vermin are also known for tearing holes in ducts, which can let in outside contaminants that filter down into your home.

I am just a homeowner and have absolutely no qualifications, but it seems pretty logical to me that a good cleaning every once in a while is just a good practice. It just seems like too vital of a component in a vital system to never clean.
2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them (34 percent)
I have lived in Calgary for quite some time now. When I first moved here I couldn’t stand the humidity levels. Its like a desert come winter. When I moved into my new home, the house inspector insisted I have my furnace and ducts cleaned. I was very sceptical about duct cleaning to begin with. The company I hired came on time and were very respectable from the start. Before mentioning anything they asked me what my concerns were and what issues I was having. They were more concerned about addressing my issues then bringing anything non related up. I ended up going with this company and getting a humidifier installed a couple days later after the cleaning. Its been almost 4 years now that I have been here. The humidifier is working great and the difference is incredible. They took me around explained step by step what they were doing and the reasons they were doing it. With all those other companies out there, I am glad I found them at this site.
Cleaning a complex air duct system isn’t a job for a carpet cleaning machine or shop vacuum. Our “Van Mounted”  BIG trucks create the negative air flow needed to remove even the worst contaminants and pull them outside where they belong.
We moved to a house built in 1965 from a 1915 house with a dirt basement. Against what I anticipated, the 1965 house was much dustier. It was like felt on top of everything. I cleaned and cleaned and it did become less dusty over time. We then found out a cat lady with over 2 dozen cats lived in the house in the past. We then had to get our furnace replaced and I was able to look down some of the duct work, the dirt and debris was 3-5 inches deep. Additionally, the basement ducts were entirely plugged with debris including dirt, seeds, ants, toys, etc. I had already removed what I could from those. We had our ducts cleaned last year, and the dust in the house is greatly reduced. Also have lost the runny nose I got after moving here. There are duct cleaning con artists out there, but ours did a good job.
Homeowners who are having their ducts and vents cleaned can also opt to take advantage of other services offered by local cleaning companies. For example, Airclips Services on Ableta Boulevard also offers house cleaning services, bathroom and kitchen designing, and thermostat installation. D’s Enterprise, based out of nearby Wylie, also offers central air conditioning, gas furnace, electric furnace, and heat pump repair. These additional services can add several hundred dollars to the final bill. Dallas cleaning services average $149, while other repairs vary depending on the scope of the job.
I’ve read a lot of replies on here and I’m sorry for people’s bad experiences with companies who shouldn’t be cleaning ducts. The only problem I have with the post on Angie’s list is the pricing is a bit low for companies like mine to make a profit. I have owned a NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) Certified duct cleaning company since 1999. We do residential, hospitals, factories, and commercial buildings. We send a NADCA certified ASCS (Air Systems Cleaning Specialist) and VSMR (Ventilation System Mold Remediators) specialist to every job we do, including residential jobs. It cost us a lot to keep our certifications up, we have to go to classes each year for this. Our prices are higher than the prices Angie’s List stated, but its like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. A home that is 1500 sq ft would take 2 technicians about 4 hours to do the work because most the homes in the area I cover have crawl spaces, and they have to crawl under the house to clean the ductwork. This is 8 total work hours for this job, plus the cost of travel time and gas to get to the jobsite. The cost of the job would be $750. A larger home would be more depending on the size of the house. That is a bit higher than Angie’s list stated, but this covers everything with no hidden cost. And to send 2 qualified people to a job site its going to cost more than 1 guy going in with a shop vac type system and telling the home owner that he doesn’t need to go under the house or in the attic to clean the duct work. We get a lot of jobs going behind these type duct cleaners to fix what they messed up then the home owner is stuck paying 2 companies. One last thing, make sure the person is NADCA certified, and not just say certified. Some of the companies who make shop vac type systems will teach a day and a half class and then give the person a certification saying they can operate that duct machine. This is NOT the same as NADCA certification. NADCA is the only certification recognized by the EPA for cleaning HVAC Duct. Good luck and have a great day.
A family owned and operated company, Armstrong Hearth and Home has been a leading provider of air duct cleaning services since 1965. We are a National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) member company and follow NADCA’s stringent cleaning standards. We use NADCA’s recommended source removal technique that utilizes large negative air machines, mechanical brushes, and compressed air tools to clean air duct systems. Our process does not include chemicals, disinfectants, and masking of fragrances because there is no need with this thorough cleaning method.
Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing (See diagram).
Is it taking your clothes dryer longer and longer to dry? You may not need a new clothes dryer or costly repair. A clogged clothes dryer vent can restrict air flow causing your clothes dryer to be less efficient and could even cause a fire. A clean clothes dryer vent will help your clothes dryer vent run more efficiently and reduce energy cost.
I just wanted to say that people run coupons everyday offering good deals. Why do they do this? To get people in their store, resteraunt or other place of business so they will hopefully buy other things as well. In case anyone did not know this is a marketing technique to generate more business which in return generates more revenue. More revenue equals successful business generally. So having said that just bc you find a coupon for an air duct cleaning does not mean it’s a scam. It could mean this company is trying to use every facet available to MAKE MORE MONEY! Aren’t we all trying to do that? Yes do your homework and make sure Joe Shmoe knows what he’s doing but do not speculate all companies running a coupon are out to scam you. After all you have the final say. No one is holding a gun to your head making you pay for extra services. Your not scammed because someone was a great salesman. Your scammed when someone says you have mold and does not show you or test it. Or when a two hour job takes thirty minutes. Or when their using a leaf blower and a shop vac. Use common sense people. I’m sure 90% of people know what mold looks like so ask to see it if they do not offer, or you may think somethings up if someone brings in a leaf blower and a Orek XL to clean your ducts. Or pulls up in a compact car talking about fee fie foe fum I’m gonna clean you air thingys. Common sense folks. Use your better judgement.
Once cleaning is complete and all components have been replaced, Cyclone Air Systems will not leave your home or office until it is absolutely certain that both the cooling and heating processes are operating properly.
fact is most homes have bad filter racks. when you insert the filter it doesn’t seal well to the sides so some of the air and dust bypass it and end up in the supply ductwork and into the house. Most of the dust in the supply ductwork settles down and doesn’t get blown in the house but some of it does when the blower starts up or when you put a new filter. If you have allergies or other health problems put in an electronic air cleaner, get your ducts cleaned and run the fan as much as you can afford. you can also get an ECM motor installed which is going to be worth it if you want to run the fan 24/7. If you have uninsulated metal ducts take down the ones you can and wash them. Then put them back and seal the joints. Cleaning the ductwork also improves airflow which is important to AC and Heat pump systems for efficiency. An electronic air cleaner will also improve airflow and static pressure because they usually have a much larger filter surface area. An electronic air cleaner also keeps the ac coil clean like new which means better efficiency and no cleaning needed. AC furnaces sometimes grow mold around the coil because of the condensation. Electronic air cleaners should be able to filter mold spores but the best remedy is installing a UV light next to the coil which will kill the mold.
I am 79 years old, bought a condo & spent a lot of money on it. this winter my first bill was 450.00. had my furnace checked out, which is on the roof. it was old rusted out & leeking oil. i talked to owner & had new unit installed. they came out to clean ducks & they were split & worn out. there is no crawl space because theres a unit above me. my real estate lady or this company will not help me fix this problem.
NADCA and EPA both have good points. Although, organizations are made to make money. Common sense and looking at NADCA and EPA pre-checklist. If you don’t see it in the check list, you don’t have to do it! But, if you do, look up Diamond certified co.s and the BBB. Beware of bait and switch scams, $60 vents and the like coupons which claim to help all for the measley sum of $79.00 bucks.
I was an HVAC tech and a duct design specialist for 10 years before I stated duct cleaning 20 years ago, I have 8 certifications in mold and mold testing, and I’m here to tell you some of the best and worst duct cleaners I have seen have many certifications, It comes down to work pride and proper cleaning equipment. So get references from friends and family make sure the company has little or no complaints.

A: There are 3 major parts to an air system: 1. The supply and return grills; 2. The interior surfaces of the supply and return vents; and 3. The furnace/air conditioner air handler. All 3 components must be cleaned. If only one or two of the components are cleaned, the contaminates from the 3rd component will rapidly contaminate the ones that were cleaned.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the service from this company. The crew arrived on time and were very polite and professional. Pricing was competitive compared to the other vent cleaning companies I researched. I will certainly use them again in the future and will recommend them to my family and friends.
Thanks. I have a gas furnace. If I do it myself, do I need to extinguish the pilot light? Will it go off by itself when I turn the power off to the furnace? Will I need to have it re-lit once I turn the power back on?

“local air duct cleaning -what is involved in air duct cleaning”

What about ringworm? If the fungus is as contagious as doctors warn, and the spores can live several months, doesn’t it make sense to spray some sort of fungus killer into the HVAC system to kill the spores that it has sucked in from the air? Duct cleaning would not be helpful at all here; these spores are microscopic and it could actually spread them further. But given how severely contagious ringworm is, body and especially scalp, does anyone make an aerosol product that will clean the system and kill the fungus? One the resident can use, not call an HVAC company; you can’t do that when you are in an apartment. I hear it’s not the same as mold, it is much more difficult. Truth?
If there is stuff in the ducts, the fact that it’s laying there and not being blown into the rooms is proof positive that it is hurting no-one. The 5-6 exceptions you cite in this article I’ll buy, but only with the caveat that at least some of those could have been avoided by proper protection (during remodeling for example) – and if asbestos/lead/whatever winds up in your ducts- the remodeling contractor should be the one paying to remove it.
Downtown- Pedestrian-friendly with a variety of hot spots, boutiques, galleries, and museums, downtown Dallas has a lot to offer its residents. Housing options range from affordable high-rise apartments to luxury lofts, providing options for most of the young professionals and hipsters who opt for urban living. With Main Street Garden and Klyde Warren Park nearby, downtown residents also have access to plenty of green space to go out and play.
Thanks to everybody who left comments here, especially Krunk and Shania. I have been offered a position in an HVAC company and after reading the above comments, my decision is to apologize. I’m not going to be a “professional con”!

Odors: Air cleaning devices designed for particle removal are incapable of controlling gases and some odors. The odor and many of the carcinogenic gas-phase pollutants from tobacco smoke will still remain.
You’ll never see Armstrong use a Shop Vac vacuum or Rotobrush© in your home.  We use an assortment of specialized vacuum equipment designed specifically for air duct cleaning.  This includes high powered vacuum equipment, air compressors, mechanical brushing tools, air whips and blades.
If no one in your household suffers from allergies or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and if, after a visual inspection of the inside of the ducts, you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary. It is normal for the return registers to get dusty as dust-laden air is pulled through the grate. This does not indicate that your air ducts are contaminated with heavy deposits of dust or debris; the registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.
Hi all, please clean you ducts there is to much dust everywhere, and people with allergies will suffer the most, We live in homes that are full of dust everything produces dust, well not everything but paper carpet furniture etc.. the data speaks for itself. Terry AZ
Great service they use truck mount take them 3 hours. Found them after they clean my friend house she was very happy so called them. They explain what will be done and did a walk throw. Highly recommended
Air duct cleaning is not a scam, It is a matter of hiring the right company to do the job. It has been proven by many reputable sources that air duct cleaning is necessary to improve indoor air quality. Before you hire an air duct cleaning company make sure to ask them if you can obtain some before/after footage of their previous projects.
Do you want a cheap quote that will leave you with unfilled expectations, or a fair price from Amistee promised to you right up front? There is a reason Amistee has an A+ rating on the BBB and is a Super Service Provider with Angie’s List.
The team (yes, two people) took most of the day and thoroughly cleaned everything including the blower wheel, AC coils, condenser outside, registers, boots, trunklines, and plenums. The said they follow the national air duct cleaners assn which requires a huge HEPA-filtered collector while cleaning, rotating brushes in the duct work, air sweeping tools, etc… I thought they were very professional and very thorough! And all at a great price.
Make sure you do your research on the NADCA.org website, the Better Business Bureau and the attorney general. At Alpine we have an A+ rating with the BBB and zero consumer complaints. We are licensed and certified through NADCA. There are a lot of shady air duct cleaning companies out there with too low to be true pricing. They are in trouble with the BBB, are NOT certified with NADCA and use bait and switch tactics. Go with a company that has long standing credibility.
Yes, ducts can look terribly dusty. However, that dust will not become aerosolized during the normal operation of your furnace. There is an easy way to test this. Rent a particle counter and test the air flowing out of your registers before and after cleaning. You will not see any improvement in the air quality or any reduction in the airborne dust level. Think of it this way. Duct cleaning companies tell you that you need to clean your ducts when you can see a layer of dust in your ducts. Yet that very layer of dust is proof that duct cleaning is unnecessary, because that dust proves that the air movement in your furnace is not fast enough to re-aerosolize the dust.
The duct cleaning was great. I also ordered hookups of my washer and dryer with A1 in Beaverton, OR which was to include bringing new supply lines and a drain hose for the washer. After verifying twice this would be done with A1 on their direct office line, they called the day of the install to say they didn’t do hoses and didn’t have them. So, I don’t have a working laundry in my house until I get the hoses myself. Why did they say they could do it? What a let down.
When you hire someone to put up wallpaper or build a fence, it’s easy to see whether it’s a good job. But with services like air duct cleaning, there’s much more risk of fraud because the homeowner can’t easily check the work. A disreputable company may not have the proper equipment to do a quality air duct cleaning job, may overcharge you, may leave the ducts dirty or filled with debris and may even do costly damage to your home’s HVAC system. Some companies entice you with very low offers, such as $59 for a whole-house cleaning, then pile on extra charges.
You have covered all necessary points on your blog. Dirty ducts blow dust, lint and other debris into every room of your home but sometimes you have to call professional for all duct cleaning services.
hi tom im in the air duct cleaning for 20 years you where scamed,,it does not cost to treat mold 300 dollars,if thiers mold in ducts it would not be at the regersters only,,sorry,,i just read your post,,,anthony
I hope this further explains the situation. HVAC is very technical, requires a wide variety of uncommon tools and I try to keep it easy to understand to the average homeowner. Beyond that, there could be licensing required by law in certain cases.
The presence of mold inside an HVAC system can be an allergy trigger for some. Our Standard and Premium Service Packages include the application of an EPA registered disinfectant to the coils and the ducts.
Venice warns homeowners to beware of air duct cleaning scams, especially the sort where unscrupulous cleaners offer a $49 special deal but start piling on extra fees. “It’s a bait and switch scam where they say they’ll offer unlimited cleaning, but then they throw around terms you might not understand, such as extra fees for a ‘main duct line,’” he says. “And many times, these cleaners end up walking out the door with twice the amount of money a reputable duct cleaner would charge. They’ve gotten very sophisticated at upselling.”
Not all lint is caught by your lint screen. Some of it is pushed through your dryer vent where the highly-flammable material catches and sticks in the crevices. Regular dryer vent cleaning removes all of the lint and clothing fibers from your dryer vent.
While vacuuming and dusting may be a part of your weekly cleaning routine, these basic methods invariably leave dust and dirt behind, and no amount of regular cleaning can capture every dust mite your home produces. As such, much of that dust and dirt ends up in your air ducts. What’s worse is that this same dust continues to recirculate over and over again, with the dust continuing to accumulate inside your ducts even while it’s redistributed throughout your home.

• A good duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000 and addresses every aspect of the system that air passes over, including the furnace, air coils and central system. Good cleaners will use negative air machines with HEPA filters.
Your supply vents ought to be relatively clean in comparison due to the fact that there is an air filter upstream from the supply vents preventing any dust , usually, from going any further than the filter. However there will be some albeit a lot less in any event.
Our trained technicians provide speedy, efficient services that go above and beyond what you expect from HVAC cleaning and duct sealing services. Your Mr. Duct Cleaner team will arrive on time, adhere to the estimate we provide, and leave behind a clean work area.
I called a company name “GREEN RHVAC” with their $29.00 one system air duck cleaning. When the guy came with a truck I asked him to tell me how much he will charge and he said that if he gave me price and I didn’t want the service then he would charge me $89 or he would tell me how much he charge me after he finished the work. I immoderately sense that I made mistake to call him to my house. To cut my lost I asked him to give me the price and it was $1600 for two systems house. I paid $100 to him for my lesson to learn and search online to find this site is very helpfully and I should do it before to call anyone for air duck cleaning.
On the other hand, if a service provider fails to follow proper duct cleaning procedures, duct cleaning can cause indoor air problems. For example, an inadequate vacuum collection system can more dust, dirt and other contaminants than if you had left the ducts alone. A careless or inadequately trained service provider can damage your ducts or heating and cooling system, possibly increasing your heating and air conditioning costs or forcing you to undertake difficult and costly repairs or replacements.
